5 Mens Championships submitted by Seth Onan The landscapes defiantly drew us into this years world tournament with the most beautiful red rock and mountains, which led us to the most dominate men pitchers in the world. After the first three days of preliminaries the top 16 legendary men made their appearance on the 27th of July to crown the Men s World Title in St. George, Utah. These legendary pitchers included Alan Francis - OH, Matt Fuller - WA, Gary Bearpaw - OK, Ken Jones - NM, Gary Opper - ID, Gary Currier - ME, Dan Watson - AL, Tom Williams - MI, David M Rioux - CT, Dalton Rakestraw - IL, Gale Green - VT, Austin Bailey - IL, Rick Bermingham - CA, Don Davis - WA, Marcus Santillana - CA, Rick Howe - MA. From the flip of a shoe and a handshake to the crowd applauses for each winner of each game, it was a nail biting crowd to witness this year s world tournament championship play. As the top 16 men went nail to nail for three days, Alan Francis and Gary Bearpaw grew more and more into the lead each game. This was not surprising for the two top men in the world to be one of the winners, but they still were challenged to their best from players, including Dan Watson and Tom Williams. From the start most people would rumor that there was not doubt who was going to win it, but anything can happen in horseshoes. Take this for example: one of the top men pitchers in the world, Dan Watson, was defeated by Dalton Rakestraw, an A class men pitcher, whose percentages were well far apart but led to a victory upsetting Dan, with pitching a knocking 74.1%. On the 2nd day of championship play, Gary Bearpaw was well-tested to have a chance for the mens title. Rick Bermingham gave his best effort to defeat

6 Bearpaw but came a little short and gave him the win, pitching an average of 66.6%. Also, a few other pitchers including Rick Howe, Dalton Rakestraw, and Dan Watson gave him a challenge to face. While having these tough games he pulled through to capture the win over some close encounters. High Games that got the ball rolling was pitched by Alan Francis %, Tom Williams %, Gary Bearpaw %, and Dan Watson 85.7%. These games were the best of the tournament and also thrown by the best. As the final day arrived there was a close race, but we all knew that would change. The top 5 best pitchers in the world went head to head - which means anything could have happened. As the day unfolded Gary Bearpaw and Alan Francis swept through the top 4 until the final game where Gary and Alan would have to compete. As there record stands at 14-0, it would all come down to this to determine the 2017 Mens World Championship. As Alan started on a fast lead Gary never gave up and tried his best to make a come back but couldn t manage to do so as Alan threw a whopping 88.24% to win his 22nd World Title. While Gary threw 77.94% he couldn t handle Alan as he laid his years on another world title. We might not have the landscapes at the 2018 world tournament, but we will still have our legendary pitchers go at another world title. And will Alan seek another world tournament next year...we will see.

10 Elders Championships submitted by Dalton Rakestraw With The Champ out, the new and improved Elder Mens World Championship Class would be a fight to the stake. The posed question, who will win the title this year? Would this be the year Dan Dunn from Kokomo, Indiana, take his long-journeyed career to the winner s lounge? Would professional trained NHPA Judge Richard Altis from Ballwin, Missouri, finally have his left handed 3 quarter reverse perfected for the win? Would it be time for Roger Vogel from El Dorado, Kansas, to finally get what he has pitched to win for 30 plus years? Could Rich Pintor of Idledale, Colorado, win a second time in Saint George? Would the help of Brian Simmons be all that is needed for Jim Cooper from Seiverville, Tennessee, to win his first Elder Mens title? How about Orange Beach, Alabama native Jim Ellison, with his single left-handed flip? All questions would be posed for the perfect line-up of 30 footers for the year. In round 1, we would already begin to see who is hungry for the world title this year. Game percentages of 90%, 85.7%, 88.4%, and 78.8% would be the talk of the tournament to that point. Round 2, Dan Dunn, IN, would lead on from his first game of 85.7% and pitch an 82.2% game. The first day of competition would end with Ellison, J. Cooper, Vogel, Dunn, Altis, and Pintor at 5-0. The second day of competition we would see the best game of the Elder Mens class pitched by Roger Vogel. His one missed ringer game. He had a perfect 100% game until, the possible happened. The dreaded bounce off. Roger hit 35 out of 36 for a 97.2% game against the South Carolina guy, Tom Westbrook. Not to be out-dunn, Dan Dunn would have 4 of 5 games over 80%, he had one game day two at 79.0%. Jim Ellison would start to settle in and pitch high 60s and had several high 70s, but always finding the W, but also found one L. Cooper would pitch consistent

11 mid to high 70s and find all wins. Altis would slip up and only win 2 games of the second day of competition. Pintor would find a single loss in the second day to the odds-on fav: Dan Dunn. Those at 10-0 would be Dunn, Vogel, and J. Cooper. Pintor and Ellison would follow close behind at 9 wins and 1 loss. In the final day of competition, in the first round of the day, round number 11 for the bracket, Daniel F. Dunn would hit a mental block against the Floridian. Not David Jagers, nor Ron Deckard, but the other FL guy, Robert Moulin. He would finish off Dunn in a not so quick 74 shoe match. Ellison would hit the 39 point mark and lose to Roger Vogel with that in a 68 shoe game. Ellison would now have two losses. Pintor would also beat Cooper in that same round. Leaving Vogel the lone man on top undefeated. As rounds would come and go, the class still did not have a clear cut winner. James Cooper beat Dunn. Richard Altis beat Roger Vogel. James Cooper would lose two more to Ellison and Vogel. Still shaking standings up. force a three-way playoff game. Dunn as on the mark to do jus that, but Vogel hit his hot streak on Dunn s cold streak. The long journeyed career guy would end up taking home the gold for the first time ever in his 40 foot or 30 foot pitching days. Dunn would fall short and place 3rd, and then the single left handed flipper from Orange Beach would be this year s runner-up. Everyone come on out next year to South Carolina. Would this be the year SC native Tom Westbrook wins as the hometown hero? Or will David Holmes come back from a break year and continue another winning streak? Stay tuned for the Florence train in South Carolina to pull in with the new legends and landscapes of the game. F-L-O.. Florence, Florence, Florence! Going into the last game it was a finely threaded needle match up. Dunn would have to beat Vogel to

19 Senior Mens Championship submitted by Dalton Rakestraw This year the Senior Men from all over the world travelled to Saint George, Utah, to see whom is the best of the best for another year. Ray Bedard, would be coming from Massachusetts with fresh off his re-gained title in Montgomery. Ray would be looking for his third world championship. However, during the preliminary round Ray would seem to be struggling. Gary Roberts, newly elected 1st Vice President of NHPA, would be odds on favorite to win. Gary would go 15-0 in the preliminary action to take a class title to Ohio. Would this be Gary s year to win a world title? Or would it be a repeat from last with James Dunlap from Michigan winning all 15 in prelims and placing third? Other pitchers making the cut would be: Paul Hopkins, CA; Bob Sawin, NM; Ott Dameron, UT; Gary Kollmann, ID; Gary Boots, MN; Bill Navratil, CT; Mark Seibold, IN; John Alley, ME; Howard Reed, KS; and Roy Buhler, UT. Day 1 of championships would begin and everyone would be pitching lights out! LITERALLY! The lights went out not once, but TWICE! After the council called it quits for the morning shift so that way the afternoon could still be on time for the day, there were only 3 leaders at 5-0. Kollman, Swain, and Roberts. Bill Navratil was close behind at 4-1. The final day of competition would begin to take shape. The winner was becoming more and more clear as the rounds would continue. In round 8, Gary Kollmann would take Bob Swain to town. Kollman would push and press his way to the 39 point mark, and leave it at that. Swain would touch the 40 point limit first and win the game in the 60 shoe match. In that same round Bill Navratil would hit the 60 shoe

20 mark with Roy Buhler. Bill would end up winning. Also in that same round Gary Roberts would continue his winning streak for the overall world tournament to 23 wins in a row. Beating Mark Seibold pretty handedly. In round 9, Bob Swain and Bill Navratil would fight out a tough battled game. Bill would push and push his way into the game, hoping to give Swain his first loss and shake up the bracket. Bill pushed Swain to again 60 shoes, Swain pitching his highest game of the championships of 70% and Bill highest game of 61.6%. Swain would ultimately end up winning the game Mark Seibold would find a groove in round 9 beating out Kollman, and Roberts was shaken by Buhler but prevailed and won the match. Round 10 was here and gone quick. Bill Navratil would continue to make a name for himself, and press up against Ohio s Gary Roberts. Bill would be the force behind all the long games, but his opponents would just edge him out for the wins. Navratil s hard 3 quarter turn and smooth delivery would not be enough for Roberts and his horseshoe bullets. Roberts would beat Navratil in 62 shoes. Bob Swain would bounce up against Indiana s Mark Seibold and win Gary Kollmann gathered himself up and got back to winning against Roy Buhler. Would this be his year to take gold or would new-comer Bob Swain from New Mexico take this title first time in? A little luck would come to Swain going into the last match, as Roberts would have foot problems. As fate would have it for Swain, he would beat Roberts instantly in 26 shoes winning 40-7 and the Senior Mens World Title. Not to be out done, now previous world title winner Ray Bedard went 6-0 the last day of competition but that did not help for he was now 7-4. Look for Roberts to come back next year with even higher hopes and a chance to take down Swain. Also, Bill Navratil cannot be counted out, for he posted great games and tough competition for this years Senior Men. Look for Navratil to possibly take down Roberts and Swain next year with more practice. Ultimately, the Senior Mens World Title would leave Massachusetts once again, and travel somewhere it has never been to New Mexico. Look for the Senior Mens Championship Class to bring back roots and great games as the train travels to Florence, we all ask the question, Will he have it for a repeat? Find out next year in Florence 2k18! That takes us to round 12. Here it was to decide the Senior Mens World Champion. Would the story unfold for Gary Roberts, newley elected NHPA 1st VP, and Hall of Fame Inductee in 2013 in Saint George Utah.

25 Junior & Cadet Championships Future Legends written by Aleena Lepak The community of St. George, Utah had its population drastically increased during the World Tournament. Some of that increase was from 113 junior and cadet competitors, one of the largest we have ever seen at a World Tournament. To get things started, the juniors and cadets had a meet and greet the day before competition. We all met at Snow Park for adventures on the rock wall, catching up with old friends while making new, many gallons of ice cream, and an inflatable water slide. Everyone had so much fun that we stayed until after the sun went down. The next day started the class competition. Games were close as all wanted to be the best in their class. With two shifts for all the juniors and cadets, many came early or stayed later to cheer on their friends or get some extra practice in. No one was going down without a fight. The following morning before class champions were determined, the juniors and cadets went to the Fiesta Fun Center. Many remembered this center from 4 years ago, however, some major upgrades were done during that time. Everyone enjoyed going on go-karts, bowling, playing mini golf, water boats, competing in laser tag, and winning prizes from the arcade. We overtook this center and made sure everyone utilized it as much as we could. Before we left, everyone got to replenish with pizza before heading to competition. Luckily, all pitchers made it back for competition and class winners were given their trophies, but no one left empty handed. Walker Forrester from Oklahoma took the Cadet Class A title averaging an amazing 73.33%. Warren James Highley from Missouri was in the zone for Cadet Class B as he won, pitching almost 20% above his entry average. Cadet Class C had a playoff between Kaleb Jake and Coulson Ohms, both from Utah. With lightening speed, Kaleb became the class champion. Micha Wells from Utah and Ashlyn Luster from Texas also had a playoff game for Cadet Class D. With intensity building, Micah won and took the title. By doubling her entry average, Eli DeLaCruz from Missouri won Cadet Class E. Our Cadet Class F had some of the youngest pitchers we have ever seen with two players aged only five years old and all from Utah. Coralyn Nicholes won the title with only half a loss. The junior classes showed their class with some powerful competition. Juniors Class A was the only junior class with a playoff. Gunnar David from Wisconsin and

26 Dayton Campbell from Virginia battled it out for an extra game resulting in Dayton becoming the class champion. Ivis Lee from South Dakota won Juniors Class B with only one loss. With no losses, Hayden Zobell won Juniors Class C. More than doubling his entry average, Alex Pilger from Missouri won Juniors Class D. In Juniors Class E, Ellyn Ohms from Utah tripled her entry average taking the class title. Allison Goers from Illinois won Juniors Class F by pitching over her entry average. Every competitor did so well and the fans couldn t have been prouder. Many waited anxiously to see if they would make the elusive Championship for the following day. Some even claimed they needed to go practice just in case. There is no denying that horseshoes is already in their blood. After the 32 finalists were announced everyone heading for some well-deserved rest. Championship games were intense as everyone wanted to do well. The Cadet Championship was some of the most inspiring that I have every seen. They pitched with class, respect, and a love for the game that some can only wish for. Averaging an amazing 75.43%, Walker Forrester from Oklahoma became the 2017 Cadet World Champion. The smile from his face was hard to miss. The Junior Girls Title was powerful as it came down to sister vs. sister, which many of us can relate to with siblings. Averaging 60.29%, Cameran Edwards from Pennsylvania won the 2017 title. Her family couldn t have been more proud of her accomplishments. The Junior boys were the last to finish their competition. You could have heard a pin drop in the arena as everyone was holding their breath between each shoe. Averaging almost 10% more than the start of competition, Seth Onan from Kentucky won the 2017 Junior Boys World Title. It was a well fought victory while still maintaining his composure and a tackling hug from his mother when he won. All championship classes were unique in their own way as well. Some highlights were that Sarah Chafee from Wisconsin increased her championship average by 10.44% and had the most shoes pitched at 348. Also from Wisconsin, Gunnar David pitched the most ringers at 222. Cameran Edwards finished with an average almost doubling what her competitors had, and not one World champion from that day had a single loss. All claimed their titles by winning every game. After some well-deserved celebration and rest, the juniors and cadets that stayed were given one more party during the banquet. With their family just down the hall, we received a private tour of the museum at the Dixie Center, an educational video on animals, delicious food with ice cream of course, and a magic show to end the day. They even got to keep souvenirs from the magic show, but try as they might, decided to leave the magic part to the magician. As an association, we should all be proud of what each and every competitor was able to do at the World Tournament. Positive comments were given and everyone had a great time. I sincerely hope to see every single junior and cadet again at another World Tournament. You many not be legends now, but one day you will be!
