2 -Pttg^-Z,^ Kger Reserved for VOL. XII. It s seldom that any athletc teams show the fne sprt and true sportsmanshp that Clemson and Davdson exhbted here Saturday when Davdson defeated us by the score of 6 to 5. We are always glad to compete wth teams composed of such clean athletes as the members of the Davdson team. The whole meet was n every detal an exhbton of keen, yet straghtforward and open, competton of endurance and skll. Tho Clemson lost by a narrow margn, the corps s proud of the sturdy fght put up by ts representatves. The fne sprt shown by the fellows on the sde lnes s hghly commendable. All acted lke true lovers of the snort, cheerng a brllant feat no matter to whch team the man who performed t belonged. The men on our team seemed to catch the sprt of those on the sde lnes, and knowng that great thngs were expected, exerted every ounce of strength toward wnnng. College sprt lke that shown Saturday wll go a long way toward wnnng, and we need more of t. Dck was the ndvdual star of the meet, wnnng three frsts and two seconds by close margns, for a total of twenty-one ponts. Adams also starred, wnnng two frst places, one second, and a thrd for a total of fourteen ponts. We only need a dstance man of ther calber and endurance to make our team one of the best n the South. Davdson s to be proud of the work of Brand and Worth n ther long dstance runnng, whch s very remarkable. However, no sngle Davdson man stood out very promnently, the honors beng evenly dvded among the whole team. Of the runnng events the yard dash was the frst staged, Adams fnshng frst n seconds, wth Dck close on hs heels. In the 22 yard dash Adams agan won frst place, wth Crouch of Davdson a, good second. Tme 2 seconds. In the Adams lead the race to about twenty feet of the lne, when an old football knee gave away under hm, causng hm to fnsh second. Crouch of Davdson won frst, and Sullvan of Clemson thrd place. Fnley of Davdson took the half-mle from Dck n the most exctng race of the meet. Dck was leadng fve feet from the tape, when Fnley of Davdson fell forward causng hmself to strke the tape about four nches n advance. In the fall he sustaned a badly sknned knee whch greatly handcapped hm n the followngevents. The tme was 2 mnutes, 7. seconds. Worth, Johnson, and Brand, all of Davdson, fnshed n the order named n the mle entry. Worth's tme was 5 mnutes, 5. seconds. When the two mle run was staged, all sat back to watch a slow jog, but were surprsed to see Brand, a lttle fellow of the Davdson team, set a fast pace and keep t thruout the entre race. He fnshed strong, actually sprntng. Tme mnutes, 52 seconds. Worth got second n ths event, wth Gong of Clemson thrd. Dck was ptted aganst a long legged fellow, Fnley, n the hgh hurdles, and they fought fercely for frst honors. However. Dck won frst place by a few feet n 7.2 seconds. In the low hurdles Dck for Clemson won from Crouch. In spte of a bad heel sustaned n hs wnnng broad jump, crossed the tape slghtly n advance of hs fast opponent. More of Davdson won thrd place. Dck's tme was 27 seconds. In practce Glmer of Clemson had been tossng the old shot for about 6 or 7 feet, but Saturday beng hs frst meet, he was so nervous that the best he could do was 5 feet, 9-2 nches. Grey of Davdson won frst wth 6 feet, n. Adams tossed t 5 feet, 2 nches, whch got us thrd place. Dck was agan entered when the broad jump was called, and won t for Clemson n one jump at 8 feet, -2 nches. Fnley and Covngton, both of Clemson, (Contnued on last page) NO. 2. COLLEGE, S. The old baseball score between Clemson and Furman of last year was wped clean off the atheltc map Tuesday when the Greenvlle college boys were outclassed from the begnnng of the game untl the very last nnng. It came near beng a whtewash for them. Furman players took the feld wth plenty of pep but "what t took to knock the pep out of them," Parker, Harrs, Rchbourg and James had t n the very frst stages of the contest. After the prelmnares were over four of the Tgers took turns at knockng out threebaggers. When the last Furman man was put out the score stood 5 to n Clemson's favor. The one bg feature of the game, asde from the httng of the whole Clemson team, was the ptchng of Hough for the Tgers. Although a lttle wld at frst and n the last nnng, he steaded down and succeeded n makng ffteen of the Furmantes tral ther bats back to the bench. Only four of the vstors can clam the honor of gettng a clean ht durng the afternoon. Ther only score was made n the nnth when Hough let up a lttle and by a base on balls, a ht, and a low throw flled the bases. Then a man accdently got n the way of one of Hough's fast ones and forced the only tally across the plate. Ths s the second game that Hough has won ths season and he s gong good. Besdes hs work on the mound he ht one of Bolng's offerngs on the nose for three bags, and made two scores. Capt. Parker put up an excellent game at short and was ably seconded by the playng of the whole team. Bll Harrs s playng the best game of hs lfe behnd the bat and s provng the most consstent htter that s wearng the Tger unform. Mutt Gee s also swattng the old pll at a lvely rat'e and connected wth four sngles out of fve tmes at bat. James, Parker, Harrs, and Rchbourg each got trples. Nne Tgers were pushed across the home plate n the sxth when sx sngles were garnered off the Furman ptcher, along wth a three bagger, a few (Contnued on thrd page) SENIORS EASTER DANGE On Frday evenng, Aprl the th, the Senor Dancng Club gave ther Easter ball. The dance was one of the best that has ever been gven by the class of '7. There were about thrty-fve couples on the floor. General dancng was partcpated n untl about 9 when the grand march was formed and led by Mss Elzabeth Allen and Cadet Freeman, the club presdent. The cards were flled out promptly and the regular program was carred on. Dancng contnued untl about two-thrty when the tuneful but sad tones of "Home Sweet Home" were heard. The hall was beautfully decorated wth festoons and draperes of black and whte streamers, the whole effect resemblng somewhat a huge checker board. The orchestra stand, n the center of the floor, contaned the "bunch" who gave the best musc that has ever been gven here. A great many people remarked upon the qualty of musc rendered, especally of the unformty of tme and the rchness and softness of the tones. The corps s exceedngly fortunate n havng such a fne orchestra ths year. Among those who enjoyed themselves were, Mss Jesse Bowen wth Cadet Bennett. Mss Ellen Grer wth Cadet Bates, (Contnued on thrd page)

THE HARVARD IDEAL GIRL The "Round Table Boys," members of the Graduate School at Harvard, got together recently and agreed on the "grl that's worth whle" as follows She s attractve, graceful, and healthy, but not necessarly pretty. She can dress tastefully and entertan any one and make hm feel at ease. She can make bread as well as fudge, and cake as well as rarebt. She s apprecatve of the dance and of sports. She s broadmnded, sympathetc, tact ful, unselfsh, optmstc, thrfty, of good dsposton, and moderate n all thngs. She can stand reverses wthout worry. She s gentle to chldren and knd to older people, especally her parents. She has a broad educaton, but not necessarly a college one. She s modest and true and home-lovng. She has good socal standng, s of a relgous nature, and s not too proud to pray. Bx "I see there's a report from Holland that concrete bases for German cannon have been found there." Vewed merely as a matter of busness, even f he has to borrow the money at nterest, he wll fnd that hs ncreasod earnng capacty perhaps even the frst year after graduaton wll be suffcent to repay the loan. It s a poor busness polcy to wat to earn the money necessary to pay for an educaton wth an earnng capacty only one-half or one-thrd that of an educated man. Every year of untraned, uneducated labor represents a drect fnancal loss. Every boy of ablty and ambton whose parents are unable to pay for hs educaton, should get some frend to ndorse hs note at the bank and begn preparaton that wll make for greater earnng capacty and a fuller lfe. There s no tme to lose. The world s lookng for men of large ablty and s wllng to pay for them. Already there s a surplus of the one-horsepower varety. SOUTH CAROLINA'S SCHOOL. VALUE OF A TECHNICAL COLLEGE EDUCATION A college educaton s no longer a luxury of the rch, but more a necessty of the poor boy whose parents can gve hm lttle or nothng to start on. In earnng capacty, t represents at the outset a captal of from $5, to $,, dependng upon the energy, character and personalty of the possessor, and the captal ncreases wth every year of ts effcent use. There never was a tme n the hstory of the world when expert knowledge was so much n demand, so ndspensable to ndvdual success, and so hgh! 7 compensated. For the untraned awat the postons of low wages, long hours and poverty. Clemson College brngs wthn the reach of every boy n South Carolna the benefts and possbltes of a techncal educaton. The way s provded whereby, f he have the ambton and capacty for knowledge, he need not contnue n gnorance. Here, at a cost lower than at any smlar nsttuton, can a young man obtan an educaton that wll prepare hm for self-sustanng, self-respectng ctzenshp. W. M. RIQQS, Presdent. (
