Among the 15 Division I programs to win 22 or more games away from home, Northeastern ranked second in non-conference strength of schedule (No. 51). The Huskies are 3-4 against the SEC, 4-1 against the BIG EAST, 1-0 against the ACC, and 2-0 against the Atlantic 10. NU won nine games against the RPI top-100. Northeastern is the two-time defending CAA regular-season champion (CAA ranked No. 13 during 2018 in conference RPI). HUSKIES START #RoadToOmaha Deserving of its at-large bid to the 2018 NCAA tournament, the Northeastern baseball team will begin its road to Omaha and the College World Series on Friday, June 1, when NU descends on the Raleigh Regional, as hosted by the No. 16 national seed, North Carolina State. The third-seeded Huskies will open the four-team, double-elimination regional against second-seeded Auburn a rematch of the two programs competitive, regular-season series that was contested at the Tigers Plainsman Park on March 9 and March 10. Joining Northeastern in the Raleigh Regional are the top-seeded host, North Carolina State, and fourth-seeded Army West Point. AGAINST THE REGIONAL FIELD [1] No. 11 North Carolina State: Northeastern trails the all-time series, 4-0. The Huskies and the Wolfpack met in the Mideast Regional (hosted by Tennessee) of the 1994 NCAA tournament, while NU lost a three-game true road series at No. 20 North Carolina State during the 2004 season. [2] No. 21 Auburn: The Huskies trail the all-time series, 2-1, having opposed the Tigers exclusively during the 2018 season. On March 9, Auburn s Casey Mize threw the Tigers ninth no-hitter in program history as the Huskies were shut out, 6-0. With weather creating a March 10 doubleheader between the two sides, Northeastern lost the opening game, 14-8, to the Tigers despite NU rallying for seven ninth-inning runs but went on to hand then-undefeated Auburn its first loss of the season during the nightcap as Sean Mellen came within four outs of throwing the Huskies first no-hitter since [4] Army West Point: Northeastern has won the only series meeting against Army, defeating the Black Knights, 9-2, on March 22, 2013, during a neutral-site game in Bradenton, Florida. Of note, the Huskies traveled to West Point during October 2017 to play a fall exhibition game against Army, during which NU shut out the Black Knights, 3-0, across 10 pre-determined innings. Upon the completion of the game, Army s captains escorted the Huskies on a tour of West Point s historic campus. RECORD-BREAKING SEASON Northeastern s 36 wins this season rank as the program s single-season record, having surpassed the team s two 35-win campaigns during 1991 and 1994 the latter of two teams current NU head coach Mike Glavine played on. CAA games (17-6) is the highest mark that Northeastern has attained during its 13 seasons in the league. NU set another CAA-era record when it placed nine student-athletes onto the year-end all-conference teams, split evenly three apiece across the All-CAA First Team (junior outfielder Charlie Mc- Connell, junior third baseman Ryan Solomon, and sophomore starting pitcher Sean Mellen), the All-CAA Second Team (junior first baseman Jake Farrell, redshirt-freshman second baseman Ian Fair, and senior outfielder Mason Koppens), and the All-CAA Third Team (senior shortstop Max Burt, redshirt-junior starting pitcher Tyler Brown, and junior relief pitcher Andrew Misiaszek). Northeastern is the first team to repeat as the outright CAA regular-season champion since UNCW, which won consecutive titles during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The Huskies streak of six consecutive CAA tournament appearances ( ) ranks as the second longest active streak behind UNCW, which is the only CAA member school to be advance to all 33 conference tournaments during league history. During the 2018 CAA tournament, Northeastern made its deepest run, surviving two consecutive elimination games to advance to its first-ever CAA championship round. There, the Huskies defeated UNCW, 3-2, during game one to force the tournament s decisive, winner-take-all finale, during which NU was defeated, 7-4, by the Seahawks. Northeastern placed four student-athletes onto the 2018 CAA All-Tournament Team: redshirt-freshman second baseman Ian Fair, sophomore designated hitter Scott Holzwasser, junior first baseman Jake Farrell, and redshirt-sophomore reliever Kyle Murphy. HUSKIES IN THE NCAA TOURNEY Northeastern enters the 2018 NCAA tournament riding its first at-large berth since 1973 during the pre-automatic bid era. The Huskies 2018 trip to the NCAA tourney marks their eighth appearance during program history and their first since 2003, when NU won the America East postseason championship. Northeastern is 6-14 all-time in the NCAA tournament and has made one College World Series appearance (1966). Since the NCAA tournament field expanded to welcome 48 teams in 1988, Northeastern has gone winless during its six regional games. However, the Huskies did sweep Bethune-Cookman, two games to none, during the 1994 tournament s best-of-three play-in series, winning both games at Friedman Diamond. Northeastern has made one prior NCAA tournament appearance against the 2018 Raleigh Regional field. The Huskies opposed North Carolina State during a 1994 Mideast Regional elimination game that was hosted by Tennessee, but lost to the Wolfpack, 5-2. DIAMOND ACHIEVEMENTS Senior shortstop Max Burt is the only player in program history to make at least 200 career appearances and record 200 or more hits at Northeastern. Burt since nicknamed the Huskies Mr. 200 continues to ride his career-opening streak of 222 consecutive games played and enters the 2018 NCAA tournament ranked in sole possession of sixth place on Northeastern s alltime hits list (213). Lefty closer Andrew Misiaszek is Northeastern s single-season saves leader (12), setting the record upon putting the finishing touches on the Huskies regular-season finale that clinched NU its second consecutive title. This year, Misiaszek has accounted for 12 of the Northeastern bullpen s 20 saves, which collectively are the most that the Huskies have recorded during the program s CAA era (since 2006). Charlie McConnell is undoubtedly Northeastern s stolen base king as the junior speedster is in possession of both the Huskies all-time (76) and single-season (37) records, thieving bases at a rate of 85.4 percent across his three-year career. Considering McConnell s single-season mark during 2018, he ranks second among Division I players, trailing only Army West Point s Jacob Hurtubise (40 steals), who will also be competing in this weekend s Raleigh Regional. Sean Mellen completed the 2018 regular season with a 10-1 record en route to being named to the All-CAA First Team and collecting NEIBA (New England) Pitcher of the Year honors. Mellen is currently tied for the Northeastern program record for the most single-season victories with Peter Schultz, who won 10 games during the 1994 season and was a member of the Huskies fifth NCAA tournament team. Jake Farrell needs one triple to tie his head coach, Mike Glavine, for the Northeastern single-season record. Glavine hit eight triples during his 1992 rookie season. Farrell also enters the 2018 NCAA tournament needed two bases to tie Mike Lyon s single-season program record (138), set during the 2008 season. This year, Farrell leads the Huskies in all extra-base hit categories (15 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs), in addition to RBIs (61) and slugging percentage (.627). Redshirt-freshmen Ian Fair set the program s longest hitting streak at 22 games between March 20 and May 1, in addition to holding a 35- game on-base streak from March 20 to May CAA POLL Rk School (FPV) 2017 CAA Points 1. 3 MARATHON MEN NU won a thrilling, 18-inning affair against Boston College (7-4) during the inaugural game played at the Eagles new Brighton Field (March 20). Northeastern never trailed BC throughout the duration of the five-hour and 24-minute affair, despite the two teams remaining deadlocked at 3-3 from the end of the sixth inning to the top of the 14th, then again at 4-4 until the Huskies plated their three winning runs during the top of the 18th. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Northeastern is the only NCAA Division I program to compete in multiple games lasting 18 innings or longer. On March 25, 2016, the Huskies lost a 19-inning CAA tilt at James Madison (Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park) by a score of 7-6 that had lasted five hours and 46 minutes. 7 HEAD COACH Mike Glavine the two-time CAA Coach of the Year (2017, 2018) and 2018 NEIBA (New England) Coach of the Year is in his fourth season as head coach of the Northeastern baseball team during 2018 and 12th season overall with the program, having previously served as the Huskies fulltime assistant and recruiting coordinator. He was named Neil McPhee s successor as head coach during September 2013 and took the reigns of the program upon McPhee s retirement at the conclusion of the 2014 season, following McPhee s 29th year at Northeastern. Glavine has guided Northeastern to consecutive CAA regular-season titles during 2017 and 2018 the Huskies first within any conference since 2005 (America East). MIKE GLAVINE SEASON Fourth ALMA MATER Northeastern 96 PLAYER ACCOLADES Louisville Slugger All-American Third Team (1): : Aaron Civale. CAA All-Rookie Team (5): : Ian Fair : Scott Holzwasser, Brian Rodriguez : Charlie McConnell, Cam Walsh. During the 2017 preseason, the Huskies had been predicted to finish seventh in the league s final standings and in turn, miss the conference tournament. However, Glavine steered Northeastern to the best fielding percentage in the CAA (.975), one that led the conference in double plays turned (58) and housed the 2017 CAA Defensive Player of the Year, shortstop Max Burt. Coupled with a pitching staff that combined to post a 3.88 ERA during league games, the Huskies went 16-7 during the conference calendar, winning the pennant by a half game ahead of UNCW. Glavine s success merited him CAA Coach of the Year honors, following in the footsteps of Neil McPhee s 1994 America East Coach of the Year mention, awarded to McPhee while Glavine was a student-athlete on his NU roster. Northeastern s postseason would end prematurely as the Huskies finished in third place one game removed from the CAA championship round. A Northeastern Hall of Fame Class of 2006 inductee, Glavine donned the NU red-and-black at first base between 1992 and 1995, hitting.276 and slugging.545 during his career as a student-athlete. Upon graduating from Northeastern in 1996, he enjoyed a 10-year professional baseball career before returning to the Huskies during 2007 as an assistant coach. Since becoming head coach, Glavine has coached four Northeastern players to MLB Draft selections: Michael Foster during 2015 to the Chicago Cubs (16th round), Rob Fonseca during 2015 to the Seattle Mariners (21st round), Aaron Civale during 2016 to the Cleveland Indians (third round), and Dustin Hunt during 2016 to the Houston Astros (10th round). During the 2016 MLB Draft, Glavine became the first head coach in Northeastern history to witness two players (Civale and Hunt) be selected during the draft s opening 10 rounds with Civale s selection at 92nd overall standing as the third highest NU draft pick all-time. At the helm of the Huskies for his second season during 2016, Glavine led Northeastern to its fifth 30-win campaign (31) in program history, improving his first-season win total by six victories. Opening the year on the road against No. 30 Oklahoma, he navigated NU to consecutive upset wins versus the ranked Sooners, delivering the program its first-ever victories against a Big 12 opponent. Returning to the CAA tournament for the fourth straight season and second in a row under Glavine, the fifth-seeded Huskies outperformed two higher-seeded teams (No. 3 Elon, No. 4 James Madison), finishing as one of the conference s final four teams left standing. Under Glavine s guidance, Northeastern observed two student-athletes go on to claim CAA postseason awards during 2016: right-hander Aaron Civale (Pitcher of the Year) and catcher Josh Treff (Defensive Player of the Year). That season, the CAA handed out 11 conference awards to eight of Glavine s players, including six All-CAA selections. Civale also became the first Northeastern player since 2012 to garner status as a Louisville Slugger All-American, having been selected to the Third Team. Glavine made a smooth transition into his first head-coaching role during the 2015 campaign, leading NU to 14 CAA victories, the most the program had witnessed since its inaugural run through the conference during 2006 (19). Under his first-year mentorship, Northeastern achieved its first top-three, regular-season finish in the CAA in nine years and downed No. 15 College of Charleston, earning the program its first victory against an NCBWA ranked opponent since He also coached six student-athletes to CAA postseason awards, most notably placing starting pitcher Dustin Hunt on the All-CAA Second Team. A native of Billerica, Massachusetts, Glavine spent four years at Northeastern and left as one of the most prolific hitters in the Huskies history. He made a big splash during his freshman season, batting.307 and pounding 19 extra-base hits, including a school record, nine triples. Glavine graduated having hit 28 career home runs and accumulated 110 career RBIs, ranking him third and ninth at the time, respectively, in the school s record book. The left-handed slugger also walked 120 times during his four seasons at NU, ranking him second all-time upon completing his final collegiate campaign. After graduating from Northeastern, Glavine spent 10 seasons in professional baseball after being drafted by the Cleveland Indians during 1995, alternating between the Double A and Triple A levels. During September 2003, the New York Mets called Glavine up to the major leagues, where he played with his older brother, Tom. He notched his one and only major league hit during his final game with the Mets on Sept. 28, 2003, recording a single off Florida Marlins closer Braden Looper. Glavine became the third Northeastern alumni to ever play in the major leagues, joining George Yankowski (1942, 1949) and Carlos Pena ( ). Retiring from the pro ranks in 2004, Glavine now resides in Lexington, Massachusetts, with his wife, Carissa, their two daughters, Ava and Sophia, and their son, Luke.
