The Chippewas are led by 2007 MAC Player of the Year Tyler Stovall. Stovall is hitting.397 on the season, with 15 RBI. As a team, Central Michigan is hitting a solid.283 on the season, but has committed 34 errors, compared to their opponents 15 errors. Head Coach Steve Jaksa is in his fifth season at the helm of the program, where he has compiled a record of over his first four seasons. The Chippewas return 14 of 23 letterwinners from last year s team that went overall and 21-6 in the MAC, second best in the West Division. ALL-TIME SERIES Ohio is in the all-time series with Central Michigan. The last time the two schools met on the diamond was in 2002, when the Bobcats dropped all four games to the Chippewas in Mount Pleasant. Ohio s last win against CMU came during the 2001 season. Ohio Head Coach Joe Carbone is all-time against Central Michigan over the last 19 years with the Bobcats. BACK ON WINNING TRACK Last week Ohio lost the first two games of the Purdue series to increase its losing streak to four games and give the Bobcats seven losses in their last eight contest. Ohio finally got back on the winning track in the last two games of the series, however, winning both games, 3-0, to move to within two games of.500 heading into conference play. STIFFLER HIT STREAK Senior Matt Stiffler is currently on a nine-game hit streak that stretches back to the last game of the Memphis series (March 2). This season, Stiffler has recorded a hit in 12 of Ohio s 14 games and has posted six multi-hit games. MOULTON EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION Ohio freshman Jason Moulton was awarded with the Great Lakes Region pitching performance of the week by InsidePitching.com and was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week, after his stellar showing on the mound against Purdue (March 16). Against the Boilermakers, the right hander had a no-hitter going through the first 6.2 innings and gave up just three hits in the first completegame shutout of his career. The Toledo, Ohio, native finished the game with five strikeouts and no walks, in leading Ohio to a 3-0 victory. GOING THE DISTANCE Entering the final two games of the Purdue series Ohio was yet to have a pitcher throw a complete game. That statistic changed in the doubleheader against Purdue (March 16), as both Jason Moulton and Matt Smith threw back-to-back complete-game shutouts in a pair of 3-0 victories for the Bobcats. Along with Moulton s three-hit complete game in the opener, Smith allowed just six hits, one walk and struck out five in nine innings on the hill in the night cap. Moulton and Smith are two of just four pitchers in the MAC that have thrown a complete game shutout this season. KLIMKO GETS OFFENSIVE Junior Chris Klimko has heated up at the plate as of late. The catcher is batting.524 over the last seven games and has a.583 on base percentage. On the season, Klimko is now leading the team with a.350 batting average. MAC STATS Ohio pitchers Zach Elmer, Matt Smith, Chris Rigo and Jason Moulton all rank in the top-9 in the MAC in opponent batting average. Elmer is holding opposing hitters to a.210 average (3rd), Smith a.227 clip (7th), Rigo a.230 average (8th) and Moulton a.233 mark (9th). As a team, Ohio is currently second in the conference with a 4.39 ERA, trailing only Western Michigan s 3.45 ERA. MADDOX III WINS MAC PLAYER OF WEEK Ohio freshman Robert Maddox III was named Mid- American Conference East Division Player of the Week on March 14. For the week, Maddox III batted.500, blasting two home runs, one triple, one double, six RBI and scoring five runs. The Euclid, Ohio, native played as Ohio s designated hitter in all four games during the week, posting a slugging percentage, a.600 on base percentage and totaling 15 bases. FAIRBANKS SOLID IN FIRST START Junior transfer LHP Zach Fairbanks was solid in his first start on the mound against Ohio Wesleyan (March 5). Fairbanks worked 6.0 innings, giving up just three hits and no earned runs while striking out four. He left the game with a 6-0 lead, but the bullpen could not protect it and the Bobcats fell 8-7 in 10 innings. KRAUSS RETURNS TO FORM Reigning MAC Freshman of the Year Marc Krauss got off to a slow start this season, going 2-for-14 (.143) through the first four games of the season. Over the last six games Krauss has returned to form, however, batting.296 with a home run, two doubles, six RBI and six runs scored. STREAK COMES TO END Senior Zach Hartle recorded a hit in the first six games of the season, stretching his hit-streak to 10 games dating back to last season. The streak finally came to an end when he went hitless against Ohio Wesleyan on March 5. OUT OF THE GATES Ohio s 9-1 opening day victory at Charleston Southern was the Bobcats first opening day victory in four seasons (2004) and its 3-1 record to start the season was the team s best since the 1998 season, when the team started

3 Head Coach Joe Carbone Ohio, at Ohio career 20th season With his 19th season in the Ohio dugout complete, Bobcat Head Baseball Coach Joe Carbone continues to build on his status as the institution s winningest coach. Carbone has compiled a overall record in 20 seasons as head coach of his alma mater, more than any coach in any sport at Ohio, and he has joined a list of only three other coaches in Mid-American Conference history to reach the 500-win plateau. Carbone s 556 total wins at the end of the 2007 campaign placed him second all-time in MAC history behind only Fred Decker (791). His 296 conference wins are third all-time behind former Eastern Michigan coach Roger Coryell s 300 victories and Decker s 401 victories. The 2004, 2005 and 2007 seasons each featured milestone victories for the Bobcat skipper. Carbone passed Stan Sanders for second place on the MAC all-time wins list with his 535th career victory, a defeat of Otterbein on March 3, Carbone gained his 500th career coaching victory on April 15, 2005 with a 12-3 decision over Marshall and a 9-4 victory over Cleveland e on March 29, 2004 saw him overtake Bob Wren to become the all-time leader in wins at the school. In the process of amassing this mark, Carbone has returned the Bobcats to perennial championship contenders. During his tenure, the Bobcats have won two Mid- American Conference titles, the most recent coming in That 1997 season also produced the most wins ever by an Ohio baseball team in one season with 43. During the Carbone era, Bobcat teams have almost completely rewritten Ohio s record books. Working directly with the hitters and defense, he has been instrumental in the breaking of 49 individual regular-season and career records as well as 49 single-season team marks. In 2001, 12 individual and 19 team records were set when the Bobcats led the NCAA in home runs as a team (122). In addition, Carbone has been named MAC Coach of the Year twice (1991, 1997), also earning Mideast Region Coach of the Year in Over the course of his coaching career, 37 players have signed professional baseball contracts and seven of Carbone s players have achieved All-American status Carbone has coached 36 first-team All-MAC and 28 All-Mideast Region performers during his 19 years at Ohio. Carbone s success is not limited to his coaching career as he was a talented player for Ohio as well. In three seasons as a starter ( ), he proved himself versatile and saw time at second base, shortstop, third base and in the outfield. He captained the 1970 Ohio team that advance to the College World Series. His playing days did not end after the completion of his Bobcat career. After signing with Kansas City following the 1970 season, Carbone played for Kingsport and Waterloo in the Royals organization. He then traveled to Italy, acting as a player/coach for Edipen. Carbone is a member of three halls of fame. He is a member of the Tioga County Athletics Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Great Lakes League Hall of Fame. This January, he was inducted into the George Whitfield Baseball Clinic Hall of Fame. RIGO NAMED MAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ohio junior right-hander Chris Rigo was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26). Rigo threw a no-hitter through the first six and 2/3 innings to lead the Bobcats to a win against Charleston Southern in the first game of the season. Rigo worked 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit and one earned run, while striking out five to improve to 1-0 on the season. STOVER LOOKS GOOD IN DEBUT Two-time Junior College First Team All-American Joe Stover had a solid debut for the Bobcats in the season-opening series against Charleston Southern. The junior right-hander retiring the first 11 batters he faced and allowed just one hit, a solo-home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, in four innings of relief. Stover finished the game with three strikeouts. ELDEMIRE PROVIDES INSTANT OFFENSE On opening day freshman Gauntlett Eldemire showed he can provide some instant offense for the Bobcats. The frosh came on as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, and proceeded to double in his first collegiate at-bat, followed by a three-run home run in his second at-bat. Eldemire finished his first college game going 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. KRAUSS WALKS In the first game of the season against Charleston Southern (2/23) sophomore Marc Krauss drew a careerhigh four walks. The four walks were the most by an Ohio player since Matt Stiffler drew five walks two seasons ago against West Virginia e (3/2/2006). THE 2008 BOBCATS Ohio is looking to make its first MAC Tournament appearance since the 2003 season. The Bobcats return 20 letterwinners from a season ago and add 15 newcomers to this year s team. There are 16 pitchers on the roster, including the top three pitchers from a year ago (Chris Rigo, Kevin Mementowski, Matt Schlarb) and nine total from last year s team. Ohio should be strong at the plate in 08 as it returns the majority of last year s firepower, which finished second in the MAC with a.298 team batting average. Headlining the returnees are senior Matt Stiffler and sophomore Marc Krauss. OHIO HAS SEASON TO BUILD ON While the end result of the 2007 Ohio baseball season was a overall record and a fifth place finish in the Mid-American Conference East Division - leaving the team well short of qualifying for the MAC Tournament - there were plenty of bright spots to build on for 2008 and beyond. Ohio also played exceptionally well at home with a record against just 6-20 on the road. All six of Ohio s road victories came in the final 13 games away from home after an 0-13 road start. THE POSITION PLAYERS Sophomore Marc Krauss had arguably one of the best seasons by any player in the conference and led the Bobcats with a.369 average and eight home runs last season as a freshman. Junior third baseman Brandon Besl had a breakout campaign with a.323 average and 41 RBI while junior catcher Chris Klimko improved dramatically at the plate with five home runs and 30 RBI. The speedy sophomore Jeremie Rehak hit.282 and scored 34 runs. Heading the group of returnees this season is outfielder Matt Stiffler, who put his name near the top of several categories in Ohio s record book with a standout 2007 season. STARTING PITCHERS On the mound, Ohio threw a plethora of starting pitchers last year before things finally started to take shape near the end of the season. With many upper classmen not getting the job done or hurt, Ohio gave its young arms a chance. Senior Kevin Mementowski and junior Chris Rigo stepped forward last season as possible weapons in the rotation. Rigo finished with a 4.18 ERA and fired two complete games in MAC play, including a one-hit shutout of Miami. Mementowski was right behind Rigo with a 4.21 ERA as both appeared in the top 20 in the conference in ERA at the end of the regular season. Sophomore Matt Schlarb also saw time as a starting pitcher with mixed results. He recorded seven wins to tie for second in the MAC and had a 5.07 ERA on the year. IN THE BULLPEN The Bobcats relief situation was largely unsettled all last season due to injuries. Senior John Angelicchi and junior Zach Elmer each missed much of the first half of the season but were solid in the bullpen upon returning. Angelicchi became the go to guy late in games at the end of the season and finished with a 4.55 ERA. Elmer posted a 5.19 ERA on the year but consistently got better as his arm got back into shape after an injury. Rigo was projected as late-inning guys at the beginning of the season but by the end of the year was in the starting rotation. Rigo posted two saves on the year. KRAUSS RACKS UP HONORS Sophomore Marc Krauss enjoyed a fantastic debut season for Ohio in 2007 and was rewarded with MAC Freshman of the Year and All-MAC First Team Honors, along with being named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All- American Team. He became the first Bobcat freshman ever to earn first team honors and just the second Ohio player to win Freshman of the Year. Robert Sismondo won the award in Krauss earned the only at-large spot on the first team as decided by the MAC coaches. He is the third Bobcat ever to be named a Freshmen All- American. He drew 45 walks, the second most in a single season by an Ohio player, and finished one walk shy of tying Matt Engleka s record. HARTLE MAKES PLAYING TIME COUNT Last year Zach Hartle was suffering through a poor season with very little playing time heading into an April 18 contest against West Virginia. Filling in for an injured Hayden Johnston, Hartle began a streak of 21 straight starts at shortstop and hit the cover off the ball in his opportunity. Hartle was hitting just.172 entering that contest but hit.325 the rest of the season to finish the year with a respectable.284 average. Hartle hit in 10-straight games from April 28 to May 11. The streak was the fourth-longest by a Bobcat during the season. Hartle came through with the bases packed in 2007 as he went 3-for-7 with the sacks loaded.
