Oklahoma baseball is on the road for its second consecutive tournament as it heads to the Kansas City Royals spring training facility for a four-game weekend at the ASU Tournament hosted by Arizona State. Game one of the tournament is Thursday at 5:00 pm against Manhattan. About the Sooners... Oklahoma went 1-2 at the UCF Tournament last weekend and heads to Arizona at 5-3 on the season. As a team, the Sooners average dropped to.292. Junior catcher Mac James continues to lead the way at.444 (12-for- 27) with eight runs scored and seven driven in on five extra-base hits. Sophomore left fielder Hunter Haley is third on the team with a.345 (10-for-29) average, but leads OU with 11 RBI, 10 runs and three home runs. Oklahoma pitchers have combined to own a 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Sooner bullpen, led by senior RHP Drew Krittenbrink and sophomore RHP Ralph Garza Jr. has a cumulative 2.16 earned run average. In five appearances, Krittenbrink has not allowed a run, while Garza owns a 1.69 ERA and picked up a save in five appearances. On the Air... All four games this weekend will be broadcast on KREF Sport Talk Broadcasters for this weekend s games are still to be determined. UCF Tournament... Despite a win last Friday, the weekend got off to a slow start as a pair of rain delays prolonged game one to five hours and 41 minutes. Oklahoma, however, was able to pull off the victory, erasing an early deficit, by a score of 9-7 over The Citadel. James hit his first career home run on the first pitch after a one hour and 20 minute rain delay. He finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs, while senior RHP Kyle Hayes picked up his first win of the season in 2.1 innings of relief. The Sooners had a five-game win streak snapped on Saturday with a 4-1 loss to UCF and ended the weekend with a 6-3 loss to Ohio State. Scouting the Jaspers... Oklahoma s first contest of the ASU Tournament is against Manhattan, Thursday at 5:00 pm. The Jaspers are 1-3 on the season, picking up its lone win over Delaware at the Campbell Invitation on Saturday. Oklahoma pitchers have struck out 69 batters to 23 walks, but have hit 18 batters. Thursday s tournament-opener will be the firstever match-up with Manhattan. The Sooners trail the all-time series with Arizona State, 18-49, but won a pair of games over the Sun Devils at the 1994 College World Series. Releases, statistics and schedule updates can be found at SoonerSports.com HEAD COACH PETE HUGHES Pete Hughes was named the ninth head baseball coach in program history on June 27, Twice named both the New England Coach of the Year and the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, as well as the 2000 American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Hughes owns a well-deserved reputation for setting new standards of excellence at every stop during his 17-year coaching career. Hughes recorded five straight 30-win seasons at Virginia Tech, including a pair of 40-win campaigns that culminated with NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and He inherited a club that hadn t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2000 and went on to compile a (.561) record in seven seasons with the Hokies from In 17 seasons as a head coach, Hughes owns a career record of (.576), including his stints at Boston College ( ) and Trinity University ( ). Hughes graduated from Davidson College in 1990 where he played third base on the baseball team and quarterback for the Wildcats football team. Santa Clara claimed the Irish Baseball Classic over the weekend with an 8-7 win over Notre Dame to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Broncos, winners of their last four, are led by center fielder Greg Harisis with a.375 (15- for-40) average and 10 runs scored. Righthander Steven Wilson is scheduled to make his third start of the season on Friday. He has yet to record a decision in 12 innings of work with a 3.55 ERA and just one strikeout to his credit. Marching On... Oklahoma flips the calendar as it hits the weekend for games against Arizona State on Saturday and Gonzaga on Sunday. Saturday s contest against the host Sun Devils will take place at Surprise Stadium, Spring Training home of the Kansas City Royals. ASU enters the weekend at 3-4. Gonzaga is 2-6 on the season. All-Time vs. The Field... The Sooners match-up agaisnt Manhattan on Thursday will be the first in program history, while Oklahoma meets Santa Clara (0-1) on Friday for the second time and first since The Sooners trail the all-time series with Arizona State (18-49) and Gonzaga (1-2). Sooners in the Desert... Arizona State has won eight of the last nine match-ups against Oklahoma; all of which have been played in Tempe, Ariz. The Sooners lone win in that stretch was a 15-8 win over the No. 11 Sun Devils on March 18, Oklahoma last visited Arizona State for the 2008 NCAA Tempe Regional. The two teams last met in Surprise in 2005; a 7-5 ASU win. OU won in Surprise in 2004, 6-0. Oklahoma twice defeated Arizona State in the 1994 College World Series. Winning Streaks... After an opening day loss to Seton Hall, the Sooners rattled off five consecutive wins for their first fivegame win streak of the season. OU last won five or more in a row when it won eight, beginning with the 2013 regular season finale at Kansas State and finishing with a win in the NCAA Blacksburg Regional Final against Virginia Tech. Opening the Gates... Oklahoma s seasonopening series against Seton Hall was the second highest opening weekend attendance total in program history as 3,754 fans passed through the gates. The previous record was set in 2011 when 4,117 saw the Sooners face William & Mary, the season after reaching the 2010 College World Series. In the first two weeks of action, the Sooners have started three different first basemen. Freshman Niko Buentello made his debut anchoring first on opening day before seeing action at the DH spot in the next two games. He leads the team with four starts at first. Junior utility man Keach Ballard appeared at first in game two and now has two starts at first. Sophomore Anthony Hermelyn, who started 48 games at catcher in 2013, made his first collegiate start at first in game three and has appeared at first in three starts. Freshman Austin O Brien became the fourth Sooner at first base with a lateinning appearance against Arkansas Pine Bluff on February 18. Crooked Numbers... Through the first eight games, Oklahoma has put up two or more runs in an inning 18 times and three or more 11 times. In game one against Arkansas Pine Bluff, the Sooners set a season-high with seven runs in the first inning. Up Next... Oklahoma returns to Norman for five home games next week. In midweek action, the Sooners host Abilene Christian on March 4 and 5. Backup Plan... The Sooner bullpen is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and has recorded 40 strikeouts in 33.1 innings to just 13 walks. Oklahoma s bullpen put up a string of 15 straight scoreless innings that was snapped in the eighth inning against The Citadel on Friday. For the season, OU relievers have tossed 25 shutout innings in the 32 complete innings pitched. Return of the Mac... James, a transfer from Brookhaven College, appeared in just nine games, earning nine atbats and two hits in his first season in Norman. This season, he has started seven games; four at catcher, two at DH and his season-debut in left field. In his four appearances, James is hitting a team-high.444, slugging.704 and has driven in seven runs, which ranks third on the team. Lineups... In the first eight games of the season, Oklahoma has used eight different starting lineups. Senior second baseman Hector Lorenzana, sophomore center fielder Craig Aikin and redshirt-junior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh have started all eight games at their respective positions. TWI(OU)B History... Oklahoma went 3-0 at the 2004 Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif. The Sooners posted a 10-inning win at No. 13 Cal State Fullerton, 5-1, then defeated USC, 9-6, and No. 3 Georgia Tech, 6-2. Left fielder Aaron Ivey went 2-for-4 in the opener against the Titans and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 10th. For the weekend, Russell Raley hit.462, while Ole Sheldon hit.385 with four RBI. Defending Big 12 Champs... The Sooners are fresh off a campaign in 2013 as they claimed the program s first Big 12 Tournament Championship since Overall, Oklahoma returns 17 letterwinners, including five position starters. Oklahoma s core is built around a trifecta of Freshman All-Americans from 2013 in left-hander Jacob Evans, catcher Anthony Hermelyn and center fielder Craig Aikin. Evans took the hill primarily as the Sooner closer as a rookie and notched nine saves along with seven wins with a 2.06 earned run average. Since 1962, Oklahoma is on opening day and 23-2 when playing the first game of the season at home, including 22-1 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Sophomore lefty Jacob Evans made his first career start on opening day, marking the first time a Sooner pitcher made his first career start on opening day since Zach Neal in Evans is also the third straight lefty to start on opening day, following Dillon Overton in 2012 and In the Polls... 4 game one, Oklahoma was eliminated by the Tigers, 11-1 in game two. Right-hander Jonathan Gray tossed 7.1 innings and allowed just two runs, while striking out nine as OU went down in the opener. Big 12 Openers... The Sooners are 7-9 in the first Big 12 match-up of the season after a 3-2, 11-inning win over TCU last season. OU has won three of its last four conference openers. Oklahoma won its first Big 12 game in the league opener against Kansas on March 15, Preseason Poll... Oklahoma landed fifth in the 2014 Big 12 Preseason Poll as voted on by the league s coaches. The Sooners received 37 points in the poll. The top five spots were separated by only six points. Defending regular season champion Kansas State (56) took the top spot, followed by Oklahoma State (51), TCU (51) and Texas (50). MLB Draft Picks... Six Sooners were taken in the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft, led by right-hander Jonathan Gray being selected overall by the Colorado Rockies, matching the program s highest draft pick with Bobby Witt (Texas, 1985). Left-hander Dillon Overton was drafted 63rd overall in the second round by the Oakland Athletics and first baseman Matt Oberste went 206th to the New York Mets in the seventh round. Later Round Lefties... Three left-handed pitchers were taken in the MLB Draft, beginning with Billy Waltrip (12, 349) to the Rockies. Ethan Carnes (21, 644) went to the New York Yankees, while Jake Fisher (22, 664) rounded out the draft class by going to the Los Angeles Dodgers. On the Hill... The OU pitching staff looks to replace nearly 60% of its innings pitched from 2013 after losing five pitchers to the draft. The eight pitchers that remain from over a year ago combined to post a 17-7 record and a 3.31 collective ERA. New Faces in the Dugout... Coach Hughes brings to Norman a completely new coaching staff, which includes two assistants with Division I head coaching experience. Former Nebraska head coach, Mike Anderson brings Omaha-level experience as the hitting coach, while former Bryant and William & Mary skipper Jamie Pinzino takes over as the pitching coach after reaching a NCAA Regional final in Ryan Connolly joins the staff as the volunteer assistant after a one-year stint as an assistant at Radford. Coordinator of baseball operations Ryan Gaines is the lone holdover from last season s staff. Big 12 Tournament... The 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship will be held at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, May Oklahoma Baseball 2014 Game Notes 1951 & 1994 National Champions // 1997 & 2013 Big 12 Champions All-Big 12 Returners... The Sooners lost both First Team honorees to the MLB Draft in Gray and Oberste. Sophomores Craig Aikin and Jacob Evans both earned spots on the Second Team and Freshman Team, while fellow classmates Anthony Hermelyn, who was also named Honorable Mention, and Ralph Garza Jr. were placed on the Freshman Team in Review... Oklahoma finished overall and in the Big 12 a year ago. The Sooners took home the hardware, winning their second Big 12 Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, OU swept through the Blacksburg Regional with wins over Coastal Carolina, Connecticut and Virginia Tech to move on to the Baton Rouge Super Regional. Houston, Rice and Sam Houston State will join the Big 12 trio at the event. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will participate in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz., with Arizona State, Gonzaga, Manhattan and Santa Clara also playing in the tournament. K-State will host its home opener after eight games on the road in California to open the 2013 campaign. KU moved its originally scheduled opening series to Grand Prairie, Texas, due to the forecast for Lawrence this weekend. Oklahoma State enters the week with the league s highest rankings in the national polls. The Cowboys are ranked 11th by Collegiate Baseball. TCU is ranked as high as No. 12, while Texas jumped from 19th to 15th on the Baseball America list. TTU sits at No. 26 on the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA rankings. Kansas 8-0 record is the best start for the Jayhawks since the 2002 season when the squad started KU leads the league with a.315 batting average. After leading the league in hits, runs, RBI and total bases for the second week of the season (Feb ), OSU s Donnie Walton claimed the Big 12 Player of the Week accolade. Walton is the only underclassmen in the Big 12 s top 10 for batting average. The Red Raiders have a seven-game winning streak for the first time since 2007 (7 games). UT s Mark Payton is tied for third on the Big 12 career leaders chart for triples.
