THE MAN-NY OF THE HOUR: Prior to tonight s game, the Dodgers activated newly acquired All-Star shortstop Manny Machado (#8), who is set to make his Dodger debut against the Brewers. Machado, 26, was the starting shortstop for the American League All-Star team on Tuesday after batting.315 with 21 doubles, 24 home runs and 65 RBI in 96 games this year for the Orioles. The Florida native ranked among the American League leaders in batting average (6 th ), hits (115, T-5 th ), home runs (6 th ), RBI (T- 4 th ), on-base percentage (.387, 9 th ), slugging percentage (.575, 5 th ) and OPS (.963, 5 th ). A two-time Gold Glove winner at third base, including taking home the 2013 AL Platinum Glove Award as the league s top defender, Machado has a.283 career batting average with 162 home runs and 471 RBI in 860 games over his seven big league seasons with the Orioles. He has a.311 career batting average with runners in scoring position and has hit.333 with the bases loaded, including eight grand slams. Since his first full season in 2013, Machado ranks among the AL s best in hits (927, 5 th ), extra-base hits (351, 6 th ), doubles (189, T-2 nd ), home runs (155, T-7 th ) and slugging percentage (.489, 14 th ). Machado was originally selected by the Orioles in the first round (third overall) of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. According to Stats LLC., Machado is only the sixth shortstop, and the first in over 30 years, to lead his team in home runs, RBI and walks at the All-Star break: SS Leading Team in HR, RBI and BB at All-Star Break All-Time (based on player's primary position in season) HR RBI BB 1949 Eddie Joost, Phi (AL) (t) Ernie Banks, ChC Jim Fregosi, LAA 10 (t) Roy Smalley, Min Robin Yount, Mil Manny Machado, Bal He is also only the second player in baseball history to be hitting.300 or better with 20+ home runs at the All-Star break and subsequently be traded that season. The Orioles traded catcher Charles Johnson to the White Sox in 2000, as Johnson finished the first-half with a.308 mark and 20 homers. To create room on the active roster for Machado, the Dodgers optioned outfielder Andrew Toles to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Also, Dodger Bench Coach Bob Geren has switched numbers from 8 to 16 with the addition of Machado. MATCHUP vs. BREWERS Dodgers: 1 st, NL West (0.5 GA) Brewers: 2 nd, NL Central (3.0 GB) All-Time: LA leads series, (30-22 at Miller Park) 2017 vs. MIL: Series tied, 3-3 (2-1 at Miller Park) RICHARD ON THE HILL: Veteran Dodger left-hander Rich Hill will take the mound tonight to start the second-half of the season as he will make his 12 th start of the year in search of his third win. Hill last started on July 10 at San Diego, allowing four runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings as he took the loss in the 4-1 defeat. The southpaw also made a relief appearance prior to the break, tossing a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts on July 14 against the Angels. In his last six games (five starts) since returning from the disabled list on June 19, Hill has gone 1-2 with a 3.23 ERA (11 ER/30.2 IP) and has limited the opposition to a.224 average. He has also punched out 35 batters against seven walks and has posted a 1.08 WHIP during that span. In seven career games (six starts) against the Brewers, Hill has gone 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA (17 ER/39.0 IP) and has held batters to a.200 average, while striking out 43 against 13 walks. Hill has been very successful in his three games (two starts) at Miller Park, going 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA (3 ER/15.1 IP) and limiting Brewers hitters to a.077 average (4-for-52). Hill has been nearly unhittable with runners in scoring position this season, as he is limiting hitters to a.100 (4-for-40) mark, which is tied for the second best among Major League pitchers with 50 or more batters faced. Since the 2017 season, the veteran has held the opposition to a.162 (23-for-142) average with runners in scoring position, which is also second in the big leagues (min. 150 BFP), trailing just Blake Snell (.153). In the month of July, Dodger starting pitchers are 7-1 with a 2.93 ERA (27 ER/83.0 IP) and a.232 opponents average in 14 starts. That ERA ranks second in the National League this month, trailing just the Rockies (2.61). LONGBALL CENTRAL: The Dodgers belted two more home runs on Sunday against the Angels courtesy of Yasmani Grandal and Kiké Hernández, giving the club a total of 129 longballs before the All-Star break. The 129 home runs tied the team s record for most homers hit prior to the break with the 2000 club and, according to Stats LLC., it is also just the third time that the team has hit at least 125 home runs prior to the All- Star break ( and ). The Dodgers currently lead the National League in home runs and extra-base hits (322), while also ranking among the league leaders in slugging percentage (.435, 2nd) and OPS (.753, 3rd). MAX POWER: Dodger infielder Max Muncy looks to continue his breakout season as he is fresh off of his first All-Star Home Run Derby, where he acquitted himself well before losing in the semifinals to the Nationals and eventual champion Bryce Harper. Despite joining the team on April 17 and missing the club s first 16 games, Muncy, according to Stats LLC., became just the sixth Dodger ever to get to 20 home runs and 50 walks before the All-Star break (since ASG began in 1933), joining Joc Pederson (2015), Gary Sheffield (2000), Davey Lopes (1979), Jimmy Wynn (1974) and Duke Snider (1955).
