Baylor is all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a mark in the regional rounds. Baylor has advanced to the Super Regional round a total of six times, and is coming off of the program s fourth Women s College World Series berth. Although Baylor has entered postseason as a Top 16 RPI team each of the last three seasons, in both 2016 and 2018 the Lady Bears have started tournament play on the road. Baylor is the only team in the country with two batters in the Top 15 of the nation s batting averages rankings, with Kyla Walker (.457, 7th) and Jessie Scroggins (.449, 10th) leading the way for BU s offense. Walker and Scroggins continue to stay in lock-step in battle for the program s single-season batting average record, set in 2017 by Lindsey Cargill (.430). Baylor went 1-2 in the Big 12 Softball Championship, making the program s first appearance in the title game before falling, 6-4, to the two-time defending national champions, No. 3/3 Oklahoma. Shelby Friudenberg punched her way to the top of Baylor s career leaderboard, drilling her 45th career home run in Sunday s series finale at Texas Tech, passing Chelsi Lake (44, ) as the program s all-time record holder in base knocks. Friudenberg passed Lake s career RBI mark (184, ) on a two-rbi single in the first inning of the series finale at Iowa State on April 29. After missing 11 games due to an ankle injury, Kyla Walker is back in the lineup, a huge boost for the Lady Bears as the program s career batting average leader and the fifth-highest career hitting mark among all active student-athletes in Division I softball, the second-highest among non-freshmen. Jessie Scroggins is making a strong case for consideration as the nation s top centerfielder, holding the 10th-highest batting average in the nation (.449) entering the weekend, the second-highest among the country s centerfielders (.461, Paige Murphy, EKU) and the highest among CFs from Power 5 conferences. Scroggins also leads the Big 12 in stolen bases per game (0.35) and ranks fifth nationally with 79 hits on the year, good for first among the conference s hitters. Scroggins now sits atop the program s record book for career hits, passing Lindsey Cargill (253, ) for the top spot with a single vs. Kansas on April 20. A 2-for-3 performance by Scroggins against BYU on March 24 marked the 70th career multi-hit game of her career, passing Naomi Fitzgerald (69, ) to set a new Baylor program record. Scroggins became the ninth Lady Bear in program history taken in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) College Draft, selected by the Chicago Bandits as the No. 15 overall pick in the third round. Scroggins added to her impressive accolade collection, named a Top 25 Finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, the only centerfielder in the country named to the list. Gia Rodoni made it seven-straight seasons that a BU pitcher has notched 200-plus strikeouts in a season, leading the Big 12 in both strikeouts and strikeouts per seven innings, ranking in the Top 20 in the country in both categories. Rodoni also made it six-straight seasons that a BU pitcher has posted 20 or more victories in the circle. Baylor had seven named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, marking 11-straight seasons with six or more selections, and five or more for the 16th-straight year. Baylor had four All-Big 12 first team selections, with Gia Rodoni, Kyla Walker, Goose McGlaun, and Jessie Scroggins all earning top conference honors. In week one, Gia Rodoni s no-hitter and dominating performance in the season opener earned her Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. In week two, Rodoni repeated after leading BU to wins over No. 24 McNeese State and No. 9 Alabama. Jessie Scroggins also took home her first-ever conference weekly honor, highlighting a week where the senior went 3-for-3 vs. two-time All-American Alabama pitcher, Alexis Osorio. In week three, Carlee Wallace hit for the first cycle in program history, earning her first Big 12 Player of the Week honor as a Lady Bear. Both Rodoni s performance in week two and Wallace s in week three were awarded nationally as Selected Top Performances of the Week by the NFCA, with Wallace additionally earning D1SoftballNews.com and College Sports Madness honors as the National Player of the Week. Week five brought another trophy to Rodoni s display case, earning her third Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor and her second Selected Top Performance of the Week by the NFCA. Jessie Scroggins was also given recognition by FastPitchNews as the D1 National Player of the Week. Baylor set a program record in week nine, sweeping the Big 12 conference honors (Gia Rodoni/Shelby Friudenberg) for the second time in 2018, the first time BU has swept both honors twice in one season. Gia Rodoni set a new program record for single-season Big 12 honors, earning her fifth Big 12 weekly honors after shutting out Texas in Austin and leading BU to a sweep over Kansas. Rodoni earned her sixth weekly honor from the conference, all coming in 2018, extending her own program record for single-season honors and tying for the third-most in a single-season by a Big 12 pitcher. Closing out the 12th week of the softball season, Rodoni had accounted for fully half of the conference s weekly honors for the top pitcher BAYLOR SOFTBALL ROSTER No. Name B/T Pos. Ht. Yr. Exp. 7 2018 BAYLOR SOFTBALL GAME NOTES WHO LET THE SCROGGS OUT Jessie Scroggins is making a strong case for consideration as the nation s top centerfielder, holding the 10th-highest batting average in the nation (.449) entering the weekend, the second-highest among the country s centerfielders (.461, Paige Murphy, EKU) and the highest among CFs from Power 5 conferences. The reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Scroggins saw a streak of 117 games and 169 consecutive successful fielding chances of errorless play end on a slip up in game three at Oklahoma State, committing her first defensive error since game three of the OU series in 2016 (April 10). KY S THE LIMIT After missing 11 games due to an ankle injury in the middle of the season, Kyla Walker is back in the lineup and better than ever. The program s career batting average leader returned for a pinch hit opportunity on March 14 vs. Texas State and as an everyday starter vs. North Texas on March 20. Walker holds the fifth-highest career hitting mark among all active student-athletes in Division I softball, the second-highest among non-freshmen. FRIUDENBOMBS AWAY Shelby Friudenberg is poised to finish her time at Baylor with a number of the program s all-time batting records. With a two-run, go-ahead home run in Sunday s 5-1 win over Texas Tech, Friudenberg surpassed Chelse Lake (44, ) with the 45th home run of her BU career, taking the top spot in the Baylor record books. Friudenberg passed Lake s career RBI mark (184, ) on a two-rbi single in the first inning of the series finale at Iowa State on April 29. THIRD BASE BY COMMITTEE After a season-ending knee injury suffered by Caitlin Charlton vs. McNeese (4/10) cut her season and career short, the Lady Bears will likely turn to a committee to cover the hot corner, calling on the services of freshman Hannah Smith, former high school All-State shortstop Maddison Kettler, starting catcher Carlee Wallace, and infielder/designated player Goose McGlaun. Goose McGlaun has taken over the role of starting 3B and held it down with ease, committing only a single error since moving into the hot corner in the second game of the Oklahoma State series. START HIGH, FINISH HIGH Baylor checked in at No. 13 in the first RPI rankings of the season and closed the season at No. 14 in the final RPI rankings. Baylor holds an average RPI win of 89 and an average RPI loss of 30. Baylor ranks 13th in overall strength of schedule, ranking fifth in non-conference strength of schedule. CALLING BATON ROUGE Nicky Dawson and the Lady Bears traveled back to Dawson s hometown and former school, taking part in the LSU Round Robin as the final nonconference tournament of the regular season. Dawson went 3-for-11 at the plate, scoring two runs, and leading off the game against the 10th-ranked Tigers with a double off the wall in dead center field off of All-American LSU pitcher, Carley Hoover. EAST COAST ANTHEM Two Lady Bears with East Coast ties enjoyed a homecoming of sorts, with Virginia native, Ashley Marchand, getting to play in her home state, while Regan Green was close enough for several family members to make the drive over from Maryland to see the Lady Bears over the weekend Liberty Spring Classic in Lynchburg, Va. LEAVING ON A JET PLANE Baylor took a non-stop, 10-day, 11-game road trip that covered over 4,900 miles from March 1 to March 10. Baylor bused from Waco to the Dallas airport, jet to California for the weekend, crossed-country to Lynchburg, Va., for the following weekend, before returning home on the 10th. Baylor would bounce back from a rough 2-3 weekend in Fullerton at the Judi Garman Classic to notch a midweek win at No. 21 Long Beach State before going 5-0 at the Liberty Spring Classic. CARLEE GOES CYCLING In game two of Baylor s 13-2 (5) win over Abilene Christian on Feb. 25, Carlee Wallace made program history, hitting for the first cycle ever by a Lady Bear. To the best knowledge and records of the Big 12 office and the current and former member schools, the extremely rare feat is believed to be the first-ever in the Big 12 s history, dating back to the conference s formation in With six RBI and her first home run on the season, Wallace went 4-for-4 at the plate, taking advantage of every at bat in the run-rule shortened game. MISSISSIPPI QUEENS The Lady Bears took a four-game sweep of the Southern Miss Black & Gold Invitational, running Feb in Hattiesburg, Miss. The weekend was bookended by ranked wins over No. 24 McNeese State and No. 9 Alabama, adding to a strong early resume for the Lady Bears. Rodoni s no-hitter streak dated back to 2017 when she became the eighth pitcher in NCAA history to throw multiple no-hitters in the same NCAA Tournament. With 11 strikeouts, she also picked up the second double-digit strikeout game of her young career, entering just the second full year of competition after having her redshirt pulled halfway through her freshman season. WEEKEND ROTATION Pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman has at her disposal a rarity in collegiate softball -- a three-deep pitching rotation that is strong enough to start interchangeably over a weekend series. Gia Rodoni has taken a strong hold as the club ace, looking to continue at a historically high pace with one of the best win percentages and strikeout rates of any BU pitcher at the midpoint of their collegiate careers. Competition breeds excellence, and there will be plenty of competition for the second spot in the BU rotation. Goose McGlaun and Mississippi State transfer Regan Green will both push for time in the circle, with Green taking the lead in the opening weekends as the No. 2 starter. NEW POSITION, NO PROBLEM Several Lady Bears are playing positions that are atypical to their previous experiences, but none have showed signs of any hiccups thanks to steady guidance from the coaching staff. Carlee Wallace s entire collegiate career had been played either behind the plate at catcher or as the designated player. BU has used her at third base several times this season and she has shown her versatility and athleticism, locking down the hot corner when necessary. Maddison Kettler was an all-state shortstop in high school, but her transition to the outfield has taken leaps and bounds now in her second year as the every-day starter in right field. She will shift back into the infield to help cover for senior Caitlin Charlton after CC went down with a season-ending knee injury vs. McNeese State. Both Caitlin Charlton and Taylor Ellis saw time around the diamond in 2018, with Charlton playing third base when Ellis is at short, shifting to shortstop when Ellis is catching. Charlton previously saw playing time at 3B in her freshman season and Ellis picked up the catcher s mitt for the first time in her entire softball career during her freshman season at BU, primarily catching Gia Rodoni during Gia s breakout sophomore season. After injury cut Charlton s career and season short, Goose McGlaun has led the pack as the frontrunner to replace CC on the hot corner, playing 3B for the first time since seeing very limited time at third early in her prep career. STAFF CONSISTENCY Glenn Moore, Mark Lumley, and Britni Sneed Newman are in their 15th season together as a complete, threeperson coaching unit. 15 years ties as the fourth-longest complete tenure in all of Division I softball, trailing only Michigan for the longest complete tenure among Power 5 conference schools. He stands as the active wins leader across all sports for Baylor athletics (736). PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE WCWS Baylor s four appearances in the Women s College World Series places the Lady Bears tied for third all-time among private schools. The Lady Bears are the only private school to make the WCWS since 2008, doing so three times over that period (2011, 2014, 2017). 9 2018 BAYLOR SOFTBALL GAME NOTES Under the direction of associate head coach Mark Lumley, the Lady Bears have tied or broken the team batting average program record each of the last two seasons. Baylor players have posted the three highest batting averages in program history over the last two seasons. Kyla Walker (.418, 2017;.415, 2016) and Lindsey Cargill (.430, 2017) battled for the top spot in 2017, with Cargill leaving her BU career as the program s career hits leader and Walker setting a new high mark for singleseason hits. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK NO-NO S Coming off a historic performance in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, Gia Rodoni kept the good times rolling, throwing a third-straight no-hitter in home starts, blanking Northwestern State for an 8-0, five-inning win on Opening Day (2/9). In 2017, Gia Rodoni became the eighth player in NCAA Softball history to throw two no-hitters in the same NCAA Tournament. She posted back-to-back no-hitters over Kent State (5/19/17) and No. 12 JMU (5/21/17), with JMU entering the game as the nation s top hitting offense. She is the first BU pitcher to spin a no-hitter in the postseason and the first to do so in back-to-back starts. POLL WATCH FOR BU IN THE TOP 25 The Lady Bears opened the season as the No. 10 ranked team in the Coaches poll, starting the year in the top 10 for the fifth time in program history (2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2018). The Lady Bears have started the season ranked for the seventh-straight season and the 12th time in program history, all coming under 18th year head coach Glenn Moore. GOOD TO BE HOME Baylor is in its 19th full season of play at Getterman Stadium, with the Lady Bears securing a winning record in each full competition season since its doors were opened in Named for Sue and the late Ted Getterman, the stadium is considered one of the most premier softball venues in the nation. At the time, their donation stood as the largest single donation ever to a Baylor women s athletics program. When President George W. Bush visited the Western White House in nearby Crawford, Texas, during the summer months of his presidency, members of his staff and Secret Service agents often used Getterman Stadium for pick-up games. The Lady Bears set a new program record for home winning percentage in 2017, going 27-2 with a home win mark of.931. WHAT S IN A NAME... Goose McGlaun has opted to swap her given name, Shelby, and stick with only her childhood nickname, given to her by her parents. Her parents read her a bedtime book called Goodnight, Goose and the name has stuck ever since. SOME NUMBER THAT I USED TO KNOW Three sophomore Lady Bears opted to change their numbers for the 2018 campaign. Taylor Ellis moved from No. 3 to No. 10, taking the number previously worn by Abby Langkamp. Goose McGlaun chose No. 34 from No. 24, just the third person in program history to wear the number and the first since 2001 (Colleen Bordages). Maddison Kettler jumped from No. 4 to No. 55, the first Lady Bear to ever wear that number. The number changes were made possible, in part, by the athletic department s transition into an exclusive apparel deal with Nike. INSTANT IMPACT Three SEC transfers will provide an immediate boost for the Lady Bears in Carlee Wallace from Auburn will provide a huge lift behind the plate, coming off a season where she was third in the nation in doubles (20), and in the Top 10 of the SEC in on base percentage, RBI/game, slugging percentage, total bases, and walks per game. Regan Green from Mississippi State gives pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman a spoil of riches in the bullpen, bringing a career sub ERA over her two seasons in Starkville.
