Nebraska is coming off a perfect 4-0 week, and the Huskers have won nine of their last 10 games. NU posted run-rule victories in three of its four wins last week, while its fourth victory was a one-run win at Wisconsin, Nebraska s first one-run win of the year. With an 11-3 record this month, the Huskers have climbed to 10 games above.500 for the first time this season. Nebraska enters Tuesday s game with a overall record. The Huskers are against non-conference opponents this spring, including an 11-1 run-rule victory over Creighton last Tuesday. Nebraska has won four straight games and nine of its last 10. The Huskers are 11-3 in the month of April. NU has scored 342 runs this season, the thirdhighest total in school history. The Huskers need 17 runs to break the record (358 runs in 1996). Nebraska is averaging 7.1 runs per game. The school record is 5.7 runs per game in The Huskers own a.342 team batting average. The NU record is.315 in Nebraska s offense ranks 13th nationally in onbase percentage (.439), 17th in scoring (7.1 runs per game and 18th in average (.342). TUESDAY, APRIL 28 7 P.M. For Nebraska, a second straight Big Ten title may be a long shot but the Huskers are poised to earn a top-three conference finish for the fourth straight season. Nebraska is in third place in the Big Ten Conference standings heading into a showdown with fourth-place Illinois this weekend at Bowlin Stadium in the final weekend of conference play. One victory over the Fighting Illini would secure Nebraska a first-round bye at the Big Ten Tournament and would guarantee the Huskers no worse than a third-place finish. Saturday is Fan Appreciation Day at Bowlin Stadium, with free giveaways and raffle prizes throughout the game. Defensively, the Huskers rank 15th nationally in double plays per game (0.48). Nebraska has struck out only 127 times this season, the fewest of any Big Ten team and the second-lowest total among all teams in a Power Five conference. Nebraska has scored five or more runs in an inning 19 times this season and six or more runs 15 times. MJ Knighten leads the Big Ten with 73 hits and is tied for the league lead with four triples. Kiki Stokes has been hit by 16 pitches this year, tying the school record for most hit-by-pitches in a season (Taylor Edwards, 2013). Kaylan Jablonski went 3-0 in the circle last week and did not allow an earned run in two of her three starts. At the plate, Jablonski was 4-for-9 (.444) with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Husker roster features eight Nebraska natives, tying for the most in-state players since softball became an NCAA sport in Rhonda Revelle last carried a roster with eight Nebraska natives in 2009, while the 1990 and 1992 Huskers also featured eight in-state products. Thirteen players on the NU roster were either a high school or travel ball teammate with at least one fellow Husker. Six Huskers were named their state s high school player of the year, representing four different states. The Huskers who earned state high school player-ofthe-year honors include: Alicia Armstrong (Nebraska); Mattie Fowler (Arizona); Kaylan Jablonski (Nebraska); Emily Lockman (California); Cassie McClure (Texas); and Madi Unzicker (Nebraska). Three of Nebraska s four pitchers were their state s high school player of the year, including Jablonski, Lockman and McClure. Nebraska features four pitchers on its roster, marking the first time since 2009 that NU has four pitchers. The NU roster features five players who have earned all-conference honors in their careers, with all five gaining recognition every season of their careers. Those players include three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree Steph Pasquale (at Temple), two-time All-Big Ten selections Alicia Armstrong and Emily Lockman and 2014 freshmen honorees MJ Knighten (All-Big Ten) and Cassie McClure (All-Big 12 at Texas Tech). Senior Steph Pasquale was one of 50 players nationally named to the preseason USA Softball Player of the Year watch list. She was one of 12 players nationally named to both the 2014 and 2015 watch lists. Nebraska s captains this spring are juniors Alicia Armstrong, Mattie Fowler and Kiki Stokes. Fowler is in her third season as a Husker captain, while Armstrong and Stokes are serving as captains for the first time. Sophomore Austen Urness will miss the 2015 season after undergoing knee surgery last fall. Urness, who also battled injuries in 2014, started 38 games last year and hit.274 with six doubles, four homers and 22 RBIs. Rhonda Revelle is in her 23rd season leading her alma mater in Revelle is the longest serving women s head coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle owns 872 wins at Nebraska. She is the all-time wins leader in the history of Husker Athletics. Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel is in her 26th year at Nebraska. Sippel is the longest-tenured female assistant coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle ( ) and Sippel ( ) also played for Nebraska. Counting their time as both a player and coach, Revelle and Sippel have been a part of 1,174 of Nebraska s 1,353 all-time victories (87 percent). Assistant coach Diane Miller rounds out the Husker coaching staff. In her seventh season, Miller has helped Nebraska s offense set more than 20 school records. Revelle, Sippel and Miller were named the Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2013 and NU is celebrating its 40th anniversary season in The Huskers shared the Big Ten regular-season championship with Michigan in 2014, Nebraska s 19th conference championship. 3 3 LEADING OFF... The Huskers recorded three run-rule victories last week. On the season, more than half of Nebraska s wins have been run-rule victories (15 of 29). Nebraska is in non-conference play this season. Including the postseason, the Huskers have recorded a winning record in non-conference action in each of the last 20 seasons dating back to NU records an extra-base hit nearly as often (124 extrabase hits) as it strikes out (127 times). Kiki Stokes has reached base safely in 21 straight games. Kiki Stokes owns 55 runs to tie NU s junior class record. MJ Knighten has hit safely in seven consecutive games. Her seven-game hitting streak started immediately after her 21-game hitting streak was snapped at UNO on April 15. Knighten has collected a hit in 28 of her last 29 games. PUTTING IT IN PLAY Nebraska has been one of the nation s toughest teams to strike out this season, as the Huskers have struck out just 127 times in 48 games. Nebraska s 127 strikeouts are the second-fewest of any team from a Power Five conference (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC). Nebraska s 127 strikeouts are 41 fewer than any other Big Ten team (Minnesota, 168 strikeouts). NU has recorded 59 more walks than strikeouts this season. Including Nebraska s 46 hit-by-pitches, the Huskers own 105 more free passes than strikeouts. Nebraska has struck out just 38 times in its 20 Big Ten Conference games. The Huskers 38 strikeouts are 36 fewer than any other Big Ten team in conference play (Minnesota, 74 strikeouts). Every Husker with at least 30 plate appearances has totaled more walks than strikeouts. As a team, Nebraska is currently on pace to set school records in batting average, runs scored, runs per game, RBIs, walks, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. NU is on pace to finish second in school history in hit-bypitches and third in hits, doubles and extra-base hits. Stokes has tied the Nebraska season record for hit-bypitches. Taylor Edwards was also hit by 16 pitches in Stokes leads the Big Ten and is tied for sixth nationally with her 16 hit-by-pitches. Stokes has also drawn 30 walks this season, giving her 46 combined free passes. The Nebraska record for most combined free passes in a season is 54 by Taylor Edwards in Stokes ranks third in the Big Ten and 30th nationally with a.545 on-base percentage. The Huskers issued more walks than strikeouts in each of the first two months of the season. Compared to the first two months of the season, Nebraska has lowered its ERA by 2.71 in April and lowered its opponent batting average by.092. Fueled by the performance of the pitching staff, Nebraska is allowing just 3.1 runs per game this month. The Huskers allowed 5.5 runs per game in the first two months of the season. In her next Big Ten game, Armstrong walked three times and was hit by a pitch in her four plate appearances at Wisconsin in game one of a doubleheader at Wisconsin last Saturday. Armstrong then walked in her first plate appearance of game two, capping her streak of reaching base safely in 12 consecutive plate appearances. Overall, Armstrong has reached base safely in 15 of her last 19 plate appearances spanning Nebraska s last five games (.789 on-base percentage). On the season, Armstrong has drawn a career-high 22 walks, bettering her previous high of 15 walks as a freshman in Armstrong has also been hit by nine pitches this season, which ties for eighth in school history. She was plunked four times in her first two seasons combined. Armstrong owns a.458 on-base percentage this spring. Jablonski is 5-1 in Big Ten play and ranks sixth in the league with a 2.92 ERA in conference action. Jablonski has not allowed an earned run in three of her last six starts. She is bidding to become the 10th Husker to record doubledigit homers and doubles in the same season. Stokes has produced 58 hits, 55 runs and 44 RBIs. She is bidding to become just the third player in school history to total 50 hits, 50 runs and 50 RBIs in a season. Barrow went 3-for-6 in the series and reached base safely in seven of her 10 plate appearances. She scored six runs in the three games, helping NU set a school record for runs in a conference series (36). Barrow scored a career-high three runs in the opener and drew a career-high two walks in game two. STOKES NAMED B1G PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior Kiki Stokes earned her first Big Ten Player-of-the- Week honor after producing a big opening weekend. Stokes hit.650 in five games, going 13-for-20 at the plate with one double, two home runs and 10 RBIs. Stokes hit safely in all five games, including four multihit efforts. She also scored a run in every game and had three games with multiple RBIs. Stokes hit her first career grand slam against Montana, when she finished with a career-high four RBIs. Stokes set a career high with four hits against Texas Tech as part of a 4-for-4 day that also included a walk. NEBRASKA NOTES NU TOSSES COMBINED NO-HITTER Nebraska posted the program s second combined no-hitter on Feb. 7 against Montana. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski made her first career start and threw the first 3.0 innings, while sophomore Cassie McClure closed out the final 3.0 innings and earned the win. The no-hitter was the 37th in program history. It was only the second combined no-hitter in Nebraska history and the first since All-Americans Leigh Ann Walker and Jenny Voss combined on a seven-inning nohitter against Kansas on May 13, Despite throwing a no-hitter, Nebraska allowed four runs (two earned). The Grizzlies scored twice on RBI ground outs and twice on wild pitches. HUSKER BATTERY AMONG NATION S BEST Nebraska s battery of junior pitcher Emily Lockman and senior catcher Steph Pasquale has enjoyed decorated careers. Lockman earned first-team all-region honors in 2013 and Pasquale was a third-team All-America catcher at Temple in 2013, and she is also a two-time, first-team all-region performer. Although she has struggled this season, Lockman has proven ability in the circle. Lockman owns eight victories over ranked opponents in her career, including victories over No. 10 Tennessee and No. 12 Minnesota this season. As a freshman, Lockman earned a complete-game victory at No. 3 Oregon in the NCAA Super Regional championship game. As a sophomore, she earned the win at No. 14 Missouri in the 2014 NCAA Regional final. Lockman is one of only four pitchers nationally who earned first-team all-region recognition in both 2013 and Lockman joins James Madison s Jailyn Ford as the only juniors among that quartet. Lockman is also the first Husker to earn first-team allregion recognition as both a freshman and a sophomore. Lockman is the fourth NU pitcher to enter her junior year as a two-time all-conference honoree, and the previous three all ended their careers as All-Americans. Armstrong led NU with 62 hits as a freshman in 2013, then battled through injury to produce 55 hits in Armstrong has produced 13 multi-hit efforts in 48 games this season, including five three-hit games. In her career, Armstrong has totaled 44 multi-hit games, including 14 three-hit efforts. Armstrong is 1 of 10 players in school history to produce 100 career hits before their junior season, including sophomore MJ Knighten, who joined the club this year. Armstrong is 1 of 5 players in school history to total at least 55 hits as both a freshman and a sophomore, including MJ Knighten, who joined the club this year.
