1 Sleep Inn Classic l Feb Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Travel Day vs. Tennessee Tech 12:30 p.m. at North Texas 3 p.m. No. 21 Nebraska Travels to North Texas The 21st-ranked Nebraska softball team looks to build upon an impressive start when the Huskers travel to Denton, Texas, this weekend for five games in three days at the Sleep Inn Classic, hosted by North Texas. NU opened its 2011 season in impressive fashion last weekend, posting a 4-1 record at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Nebraska prevented both 18th-ranked Stanford and fellow Pac- 10 Conference member Oregon State from going undefeated, as the Huskers handed both teams their lone loss of the opening weekend. Nebraska s only loss last weekend came at the hands of second-ranked Arizona, who finished as the 2010 national runner-up. On the strength of Nebraska s impressive showing in the desert, the Huskers entered the NFCA/USA Today poll at No. 21 this week and received the most votes of any unranked team in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. NU was a mainstay in the polls from 1995 to 2006, earning a final top-25 ranking 12 straight seasons while going nearly 10 consecutive years being ranked in every weekly poll. The Huskers ascension into this week s poll marks the first time Nebraska has been ranked since the final week of February during the 2007 season. That year, the Huskers opened the season ranked 15th and remained in the top 25 for four straight weeks before falling out. Nebraska will play as a top-25 team for the first time in three seasons and more than 200 games when the Huskers face Tennessee Tech on Friday. Nebraska will play a pair of games against the Golden Eagles this weekend, while also facing North Texas, Centenary and Northwestern State. The Huskers second game of the day on Friday will mark the first true road game of the season, as Nebraska takes on a North Texas squad that featured one of the nation s most powerful offenses last season. The Huskers take a three-game winning streak into play this weekend after defeating Cal State Fullerton, 18th-ranked Stanford and Oregon State to close out play at the Kajikawa Classic. Leading Off... The Huskers entered the NFCA/USA Today coaches poll this week, coming in at the No. 21 spot in the rankings. Nebraska s game against Tennessee Tech on Friday will mark the first time the Huskers have played a game as a ranked team in 212 straight games dating back to Nebraska opened the season 5-1 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend. Riding a three-game win streak, winning their first four games this weekend would give the Huskers a 9-1 start, which would tie for the best 10-game record in school history. Nebraska plays its first true road game of the season on Friday at North Texas. The Huskers were just 4-13 in true road games last season, and NU has posted a winning road record only once in the past four seasons. vs. Centenary 10 a.m. vs. Northwestern St. 12:30 p.m. vs. Tennesee Tech 10 a.m. Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann earned the win in each of those three games to highlight her impressive weekend. Quick Hitters The information below provides a quick glimpse of a few statistics and brief notes of interest as the Huskers open their 2011 season with six games in four days at the Kajikawa Classic. The Huskers are (.636) all-time in the month of February, including a 9-7 mark last season. NU has posted a winning month of February in eight of the last nine seasons (3-6 in 2008). Under Revelle, Nebraska is (.667) in February. She has posted a winning month of February 13 times in 17 seasons (the Huskers did not play a game in February of 1993, Revelle s first season). Junior Ashley Guile enters this weekend two hits shy of reaching the 100-hit milestone. Nebraska allowed a total of 15 runs in six games last weekend, an average of 2.5 runs per game. That total could have been even lower, as eight of the 15 runners who scored (53 percent) reached base via a walk. The Huskers closed play last weekend with victories over then-no. 18 Stanford and Oregon State. The back-toback victories marked the first time Nebraska won two straight meetings against Pac-10 opponents since NU has allowed two runs or less in three straight games and seven of its last nine games dating back to Impressive Debuts for Edwards Twins Freshman twin sisters Tatum and Taylor Edwards had an outstanding debut weekend at the Kajikawa Classic. Together, the duo combined for a.275 average with two doubles, five home runs and 12 RBIs. On the weekend, she set career highs in hits, runs scored, doubles and home runs, while also posting a fielding percentage. Hagemann Impressive in Opening Weekend Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann appeared in all six games at the Kajikawa Classic last weekend, carrying the workload as the only returning pitcher on the Husker staff. She played a key role in each of Nebraska s five victories, totaling four wins and earning the save in the Huskers other victory. Hagemann posted a 4-1 record with a 2.25 ERA and struck out 41 batters in 28.0 innings, while holding opposing hitters to a.196 average. She suffered her only loss against top-ranked Arizona, allowing four earned runs in 4.0 innings, including a three-run inning where the Wildcats hit only one ball out of the infield. She earned the victory over No. 18 Stanford, allowing only three hits and two runs in 5.0 innings of work, while adding eight strikeouts. Aside from the Arizona game, Hagemann posted a 4-0 record with one save, a 1.46 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 24.0 innings. What a Relief Nebraska received some great relief performances from junior right-handers Ashley Hagemann and Haley Workman last weekend. The two pitchers combined to make six relief appearances, posting a 3-0 record with one save and a 1.33 ERA. In 21.0 innings of relief, the duo allowed only seven hits and four runs, while striking out 25. Hagemann earned the save against San Jose State in her first relief appearance of the season. She allowed only one hit over 3.0 shutout innings, while striking out seven. She then earned the win in relief against No. 18 Stanford, allowing two runs on only three hits in 5.0 innings, while striking out eight. Hagemann s work in that game included working a scoreless eighth and ninth innings when a runner began both innings on second base. She then picked up another relief victory the next day against Oregon State, tossing 5.0 shutout innings without allowing a hit. Workman closed out the Portland State victory with a perfect inning of work before stepping into a difficult situation the next day against San Jose State. Against the Spartans, Workman entered the game in the bottom of the first with Nebraska trailing 2-1 and the bases loaded and no outs. She masterfully worked out of the jam without allowing another run to score and went on to pick up the win, giving up one run on only one hit in 4.0 innings of work. Workman s final relief effort came against top-ranked Arizona. She held the high-powered Wildcat offense in check, allowing only one run on two hits over the final 3.0 innings. Huskers Look to Tie Best Start in School History After going 5-1 in its season-opening tournament, Nebraska will play five games in three days this weekend at the Sleep Inn Classic. The Huskers final game on Saturday against Northwestern State will mark their 10th game of the season, and Nebraska has a chance to tie the best 10-game start in school history by winning its first four games this weekend. Only three teams in Nebraska history have started a season 9-1, with only three other squads opening the season 8-2. Below is a look at the six best starts in school history and how those team finished the season: Year First 10 Games Final Record NCAA Finish Final Ranking Regional Final 15th Regional 13th Regional 18th Regional 18th World Series (t-3rd) N/A World Series (t-3rd) N/A Tatum Edwards Homers in First Career At Bat Tatum Edwards became the first Husker freshman in more than a decade to homer in her first career at bat against Portland State in the season opener. Gabby Banda, SS (6 starts,.143, 0 2B, 0 HR, 1 RBI) Banda won Nebraska s starting job at third base last season and will slide over to the starting shortstop position in Banda showed power and patience at the plate as a freshman, producing 10 extra-base hits and drawing 23 walks. In an effort to maximize her speed and potential, Banda is batting left-handed for the first time this spring. 10. Ashley Hagemann, P (3 starts, 4-1, 2.25 ERA, 41 Ks, 28.0 IP) Hagemann set a school record with 19 strikeouts in her debut and finished her freshman year ranked third in the Big 12 in opponent average and strikeouts per seven innings. Last season, Hagemann finished second in the league in saves and fourth in strikeouts. Her career average of 8.2 strikeouts per seven innings ranks fourth in NU history. -OR- Haley Workman, P (2 starts, 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 9 Ks, 14.0 IP) Workman was a junior college All-American at Chattanooga State each of the past two seasons. She boasted a 57-8 career record in junior college with a 1.16 ERA and 603 strikeouts in innings. Workman made four appearances in her debut weekend, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.50 ERA. Morgan McCann, INF/OF (0 starts,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) McCann is the lone Nebraska native among this year s class of newcomers. A two-time honorable-mention all-state selection at Omaha Burke, McCann will work in both the outfield and infield in addition to pinch-running duties. Kylee Muir, INF (1 start,.167, 0 2B, 0 HR, 2 RBIs) Muir redshirted last spring but adds a powerful left-handed bat to the Husker lineup. She is competing for a starting position at first base after earning a spot on the all-state team all four years at Lincoln High in Portland, Ore. Madison Drake, OF (1 start,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Drake entered the Husker program as a pitcher and infielder, but after two years of development, she is competing for a starting job in left field. Drake earned her first five career starts last season and started the 2011 season opener. Tori Tyson, OF (0 starts,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Tyson emerged as Nebraska s starting left fielder in 2010, making 47 starts after spending her first two years in the program as a pitcher. A chronic back injury is expected to limit Tyson s availability throughout her senior season. Kirby Wright, C (1 start,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Wright has been a solid catcher the past two years, working behind a different All-Big 12 catcher each season. She started 20 games at catcher in 2010 and three games as the designated player, batting.224 on the year. Saige Wright, LF (1 start,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Wright has the ability to find her way onto the field in a variety of ways in her first season, as she could start in left field or at first base. Wright was a third-team junior college All-American at Wallace State last spring Big 12 Conference Standings (Feb. 14) Rk. Team Big 12 Overall 1. Chasing History Seniors Julie Brechtel and Heidi Foland both have a chance this season to join an exclusive group of Huskers who have produced 100 career hits, RBIs and runs scored. Only seven players in the history of Nebraska softball have reached each of those milestones and only once (2003) has a Husker team featured two players who totaled 100 career hits, RBIs and runs scored. Brechtel and Foland each have work to do to reach at least one of the milestones. Brechtel need a career-high run total to reach all three milestones, while Foland needs a career-high RBI total to reach the marks. Aiding the cause is a move up the lineup to the No. 2 spot in the batting order for Brechtel and a move to the middle of the order for Foland. Below is a look at how Brechtel and Foland stack up against the list of Huskers who are members of the club (listed in the order they joined the club): Name (years) Hits RBIs Runs Tobin Echo-Hawk ( ) Ali Viola ( ) Jennifer Lizama ( ) Amanda Buchholz ( ) Kim Ogee ( ) Nicole Trimboli ( ) Crystal Carwile ( ) Julie Brechtel (2008-present) Heidi Foland (2008-present) Huskers Returning Offensive Totals Among Highest in School History Nebraska s 2010 offense compared favorably to the best offenses in Husker history. The 2010 Huskers produced totals that ranked among the top six marks in school history in hit-by-pitches (first), doubles per game (third), doubles (fourth), extra-base hits per game (fifth), slugging percentage (sixth), extra-base hits (sixth), home runs (sixth) and home runs per game (sixth). Nebraska returns most of that production in 2011, including bringing back its top five batting averages from a season ago, its top six hit totals, top six doubles totals, top six RBI totals, top six runs totals, top five walks totals, top five home run totals and top five hit-by-pitch totals. Other highlights of Nebraska s returning offensive production from 2010 include: Nebraska returns two players who hit at least 10 home runs last season (Heidi Foland and Brooke Thomason). The Huskers have two returning players coming off a 10-homer season for only the third time in school history and for the first time since Nebraska has never returned three players who homered 10 times the previous season. Nebraska returns four players who batted over.300 last season (Ashley Guile, Nikki Haget, Brooke Thomason, Heidi Foland). The Huskers have four returning.300 hitters for only the third time in school history and for the first time since Nebraska has never returned five players who hit.300 the previous season. Senior Julie Brechtel has also hit.300 in her career, batting.313 as a sophomore in Nebraska returns three players who hit at least 10 doubles last season (Ashley Guile, Brooke Thomason and Heidi Foland). The Huskers have three returning players coming off a 10-double season for only the third time in school history and for the first time since Nebraska has never returned four players who hit 10 doubles the previous season. Nebraska returns three all-region hitters this spring, tying for the highest total in school history. The Huskers also returned three all-region hitters in 1996, 1998 and Before this season, Nebraska had not had a single returning all-region hitter since highest returning totals in husker history Doubles in in in in in 2003 Home Runs in in in in in 2007 RBIs in in in in in 1997 Runs in in in in in 2011 Hits in in in in in 2011 Guile Named to Player-of-the-Year Watch List Junior Ashley Guile was among 50 players named to the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year preseason watch list, announced on Feb. 2 by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America. Guile was the first Husker hitter named to the preseason watch list since Nicole Trimboli in As a sophomore in 2010, Guile batted.382 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 42 RBIs. She also drew 35 walks and was hit by 11 pitches to post a.520 on-base percentage to complement a.554 slugging percentage. Guile s 15 doubles were the most ever by a Husker sophomore and ranked fourth all-time, while her.382 average ranked third among all sophomores in NU history and eighth all-time. Her 11 hit-by-pitches tied teammate Julie Brechtel for the school record, while her 35 walks marked the sixth-highest total in school history. For her efforts, Guile was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2010 and a second-team All-Midwest region selection. Guile started 39 of her 59 games at catcher last season, becoming the first Husker catcher to garner first-team all-conference accolades since Jenny Smith in 1997.

7 at Sleep Inn Classic 4 Page 7 Revelle Inducted into NFCA Hall of Fame Head Coach Rhonda Revelle was formally inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Friday, Dec. 10, as part of the 2010 NFCA National Convention in San Diego. Revelle was joined in the 2010 Hall of Fame class by Florida Southern Head Coach Chris Bellotto and Illinois State Head Coach Melinda Fischer. All three were inducted at a hall of fame banquet, and their selections increased the number of hall of fame coaches to 53 since the organization created its hall of fame in To be eligible for induction into the NFCA Hall of Fame, the individual must have served as a head coach for a minimum of 15 years, must have been an NFCA member in good standing for a minimum of six years during his or her coaching career and must have made contributions to the NFCA by serving on committees, holding office, or serving in other capacities. In addition to her coaching career, Revelle has twice served as NFCA President, along with a stint as Second Vice President. She has also been actively involved in NFCA committees, serving as a member of the NFCA All-American Committee for four years before chairing the committee for two more years. Huskers Picked Eighth in Preseason Big 12 Poll Nebraska was picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 Conference preseason coaches poll. Of the seven teams picked to finish ahead of the Huskers, six made an appearance in the top 25 last season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The only team ahead of the Huskers that did not earn a top-25 ranking last season and a berth to the postseason was Baylor. The Lady Bears made it to a Super Regional in 2009 behind Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Whitney Canion, who missed most of last season due to an injury. She is expected to return to full strength for Baylor this season. Nebraska Records 1,000th NCAA Win Since softball became an official NCAA sport in 1982, Nebraska has posted 1,033 victories, winning its 1,000th game at Women s College World Series qualifier Missouri on May 2, Although no official statistic is kept for victories in the NCAA-era, according to research from CBS College Sports conducted in 2007, the Huskers were the 10th program to post 1,000 wins in the NCAA era. The nine other teams that reached 1,000 NCAA wins before Nebraska were UCLA, Arizona, Florida State, Cal State Fullerton, Louisiana-Lafayette, California, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and East Carolina. Head of the Class Nebraska leads all Division I softball programs with 27 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards won by 19 players. The total also ranks second nationally among all female athletic programs, trailing only the Husker volleyball team s 36 selections. NU is one of only three softball programs with 20 or more selections. Head Coach Rhonda Revelle has produced 11 academic All-Americans in her 18 seasons at Nebraska, a total that ranks third nationally during that span. Overall, Nebraska leads all colleges and universities nationally with 279 academic All-Americans across all sports. Program Stability Nebraska softball is renowned for its tradition and one of the Huskers richest traditions is stability. Nowhere is this highlighted more than looking at NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle and Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel. Revelle is in her 19th season at the helm of the Husker program in 2011, while Sippel is in her 22nd year in Lincoln. Both coaches also played for NU, with Revelle enjoying a three-year career and Sippel starring for four years. Counting their playing days, Revelle and Sippel have combined to be a part of 991 of Nebraska s 1,166 alltime victories (84 percent) Game-Winning RBI Chart Tatum Edwards, Fr., RHP/UTL Date... The Huskers were one of only three Division I softball programs in 2010 with a roster that featured a 2008 Olympian. Overall, Nebraska has had five former players compete in the only four Olympic Games where softball was included. Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel was the first Husker to play in the Olympics, as she pitched for Team Canada at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the first Games where softball was included. Sippel was again involved in the most recent Olympics, as she served as Team Canada head coach for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sippel led Canada to the medal round for the first time ever, as the Canadians finished in fourth place. Sippel s roster featured former Huskers Sheena Lawrick and Robin Mackin. It was Lawrick s second Olympic appearance, as she also represented Canada in Athens in 2004, following her junior season at Nebraska. Also competing at the 2004 Olympics was former Husker Stephanie Skegas for Greece. The Last Time Nebraska...
