Bowlin Stadium 32 HUSKERS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH SPARTANS The Nebraska softball team (21-9) begins Big Ten play this weekend when the team hosts Michigan State (11-13) for a three-game series. The Spartans and the Huskers will play one game on Friday (5 p.m.), one game on Saturday (1 p.m.) and one game on Sunday (noon CT). There will be a live radio stream on Huskers.com for all three games. The games will also be available on BTNPlus/ FloSoftball (subscription required). Last Time Out The Huskers are coming off a 6-2 victory over in-state rival Creighton on Wednesday. Kaylan Jablonski improved to 14-5 and picked up her eighth straight win. Regan Mergele started the game and pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, extending her scoreless innings streak to 10.0 innings, dating back to the March 16 game against Cal State Northridge. Madi Unzicker went 2-for-4, with one run, three RBIs and one homer. Gina Metzler hit 3-for-3 with one run. Laura Barrow also had two hits on the day, marking her second multi-hit game of the season. Taylor Otte, Tristen Edwards and Jablonski also each had one hit for the Huskers against Creighton. Scouting Michigan State Michigan State comes to Lincoln with an record. Most recently, the Spartans finished 1-2 at the Reveille Invitational in College Station, Texas. MSU lost to Texas A&M twice and beat Marist once. The Spartans are led at the plate by Kaitlyn Eveland who is batting.400 in 17 starts. She has 18 hits, 10 runs and one double. Her three home runs are tied for first on the team and her seven RBIs rank fourth on the team. She also ranks first on the team with a slugging percentage of.622. MICHIGAN STATE March 24 1 p.m. CT FloSoftball/BTNPlus 33 MICHIGAN STATE March 25 Noon CT FloSoftball/BTNPlus Lea Foerster and Ebonee Echols lead the regular starters with batting averages of.343 and.303, respectively. Foerster is also slugging.600 Additionally, the pair are tied for second on the team with nine RBIs. Only Kelcey Carrasco has more, with 10. In the circle, the Spartans are led by Kristina Zalewski, who has pitched 60.1 innings and made 12 appearances and nine starts. She has pitched six complete games, including one solo shutout and has a team-low ERA of She has given up just 12 earned runs and has recorded a team-high 59 strikeouts. Bridgette Rainey has also seen significant action in the circle for MSU. She has pitched 51.2 innings and has made 11 starts and appeared in two more games. She s pitched five complete games including one solo shutout. She has an ERA of 3.25 and has given up just 24 earned runs. She also has recorded 58 strikeouts. As a team, the Spartans haven given up 28 unearned runs through 24 games. They have 29 errors this season and rank 10th in the conference in fielding percentage with.954. For the Fans Saturday s game is Pepsi Pack the House Day. Admission for all fans will be $1 and the first 500 fans will get a voucher for a $1 Pepsi from the concession stands. On Sunday, fans are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to Bowlin Stadium for Bark in the Park. All dogs must be leashed and the first 300 fans will get a free Husker dog leash. 2 DUO RETURNS AS ALL-REGION, ALL-BIG TEN PICKS Senior Kaylan Jablonski and junior Alyvia Simmons return in 2018 as all-region picks and all-conference honorees. Both Jablonski and Simmons earned third-team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors and second-team all-big Ten accolades in Jablonski was a star both on offense and defense for the Huskers last season. She batted.263 in 43 games and had 31 hits, with 12 doubles and five homers. She totaled 29 RBIs and finished the season with a slugging percentage of the highest of her career. In the circle, Jablonski appeared in 40 games and pitched 10 complete games. She claimed 11 wins and finished with a career-low 4.31 ERA. Simmons was explosive on offense, batting.333 and slugging.513 in both which were career highs. She had 50 hits, almost doubling her count from On defense, she started 44 games and was the only Husker to start at least one game at all three outfield spots. HUSKERS ADD JUCO STANDOUT Prior to the season the Huskers added righthanded pitcher Regan Mergele to their roster. Mergele comes from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., where she helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships in 2016 and Mergele was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year and the NJCAA Division I Championship s Most Outstanding Pitcher in Mergele finished her two-year junior college career with a 1.07 ERA and an overall record of Additionally, she claimed All-America honors twice from both the NJCAA and the NFCA. Mergele will have two years of eligibility with the Huskers and is active for the 2018 season. NEBRASKA NICE The 2018 Husker roster includes eight native Nebraskans, which ties for the most in Rhonda Revelle s 26 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. Half of the group is in the freshman class and another three are seniors. SEASON NOTEBOOK UNZICKER BACK ON THE FIELD The Huskers are enjoying the return of junior infielder Madi Unzicker, who missed all of the 2017 season after having knee surgery prior to the start of the season. Unzicker has started every game this season. She s batting.215 this season, with 14 hits, three doubles, one triple, three homers and 11 RBIs. URNESS OUT FOR SEASON Senior Austen Urness will not compete this season after undergoing season-ending knee surgery last fall. INFIELD GETS NEW LOOK Nebraska s infield looks much different from last season as only two of the five regular starters from last year return to the same positions. Bri Cassidy (catcher) and Laura Barrow (second base) return. Madi Unzicker - who didn t play last season due to injury - will takeover at first. Tristen Edwards will play shortstop for the first time in her career. Alexis Perry and Lexey Kneib are replacing All-American third baseman MJ Knighten NCAA TEAMS HIGHLIGHT SCHEDULE Nebraska is slated to play 16 of its 56 games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams (27 percent). NU will face 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago (Arizona State, Utah, BYU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Minnesota and Wisconsin). This includes four teams that advanced to the 2017 Women s College World Series - Washington, UCLA, Texas A&M and defending national champion Oklahoma. MARCH MADNESS The Huskers play a total of 22 games in March, including seven games in six days (March 9-14) and 12 games in 10 days (March 9-18). 3 HUSKERS ALL HANDS ON DECK Nebraska s 20-person roster has been utilized to the fullest extent so far this season. Through 30 games, every healthy player has seen the field. Nebraska has used several different lineups and batting orders in all of its games. Additionally, seven different positions have seen a player make her first-career start. Also, Sarah Yocom got her first-career at bat against Wichita State on March 4, which means that every healthy Husker hitter has made at least one plate appearance this season. Yocom also played on defense for the first time in her career, coming in the game to play second base. She made her first start (third base) at the Easton Invitational. She had appeared previously, but only as a pinch runner. Additionally, all but one of the Husker hitters have recorded at least one hit this season. REVELLE COACHES 1,500TH GAME Head coach Rhonda Revelle coached her 1,500th career game on Friday, March 16 against Grand Canyon. This includes 26 seasons at Nebraska and one season (1987) at Nebraska Wesleyan. REVELLE RECORDS WIN 950 AT NU On March 9, Nebraska beat Green Bay and Northern Iowa in Lawrence, Kan., at the Jayhawk Invitational. The team earned its 12th and 13th win of the season, but the victories also marked a milestone for Head Coach Rhonda Revelle, as she won her 949th and 950th game as the head coach of Nebraska. HUSKER HOME RUNS Nebraska ranks third in the Big Ten, averaging 0.79 homeruns per game and 57th in the country. She entered the 2018 season as the only Husker pitcher to have significant experience in the circle and was expected to be a leader for the pitching staff. The Omaha, Neb., native has embraced the role. Jablonski has the save or win in 17 of the Huskers 21 wins this season. Additionally, her four saves lead the Big Ten. She has 14 wins this season, including eight straight. Her 14 wins are a new season best. Her first two seasons she recorded eight wins and last season she had 11. Her five losses also are tied for lowest in the Big Ten. At the plate, Jablonski ranks second one the team with a batting average of.34 and leads the team with a slugging percentage of.646. She also is tied for first on the team with one triple. She ranks first in homers (seven) and ranks second in doubles (five) and RBIs (18). Her 36 hits rank fifth in the Big Ten and her seven homers are ranked third. Additionally, on March 17, Jablonski hit three home runs against Cal State Fullerton to tie a Nebraska single-game record, as well as a Big Ten record. Jablonski also pitched a complete seven-inning game against Fullerton, becoming the first player in NCAA history to hit three home runs and pick up the win in the circle in the same game. Jablonski is also the only pitcher in the country to rank in the top 10 in wins and saves. After picking up the win against Creighton on Wednesday, Jablonski has a career-best 14 wins this season. The two pitchers ahead of her and the four pitchers tied with her have hit a total of one homers this season. Jablonski has seven homers, also a career best, and ranks in the top 50 nationally in that category as well. HOT HITTING EDWARDS Sophomore infielder Tristen Edwards has been a terror at the plate for opposing teams this season. She ranks third with a.351 batting average and ranks second with a.619 slugging percentage. She also ranks second on the team with home runs (six), and leads the team in doubles (eight) and RBIs (22). She s had at least one hit in all but nine games this season and she s had 11 multi-hit games this season. She also ranks second in the conference in multi-base hits. She ranks sixth in the conference in total bases and ranks seventh in hits and slugging percentage. EDWARDS EARNS B1G HONOR Sophomore Tristen Edwards became the first Husker to be named conference player of the week twice in the same season since 2012 (Brook Thomason) and the third Husker ever to win the award back-to-back weeks (Lisa Wangler, 2003, Big 12 and Ruth Chatwin, 1989, Big Eight). Edwards earned Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19. PITCHING STAFF SAVES THE DAY The Husker pitchers have a combined six saves this season, leads the Big Ten. The pitching staff needs one more save this weekend to tie for fifth in the team season records. NU TEAM SEASON SAVES RECORD Individually, Kaylan Jablonski has recorded four saves, while Olivia Ferrell has two. Jablonski currently is tied for ninth in school history and is tied for third in the senior record book. She also leads the conference and ranks fifth in the country. Ferrell needs one more save to tie for the freshman record and two more to break the record. Ferrell is second in the conference in saves, only trailing Jablonski. 4 2018 NEBRASKA SOFTBALL FERRELL MAKES HISTORY Olivia Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she kicked off the season against No. 19 BYU on Feb. 9. She also became the first Husker freshman to pitch and bat in a season opener. MINIMIZING ERRORS The Huskers fielding percentage is at an all-time high so far this season at.981. If Nebraska continues this pace, it would set the school record for fielding percentage, as the current record is.973. Despite having almost a completely different infield from last year, that at times includes five first-years at respective positions, the Huskers have just 16 errors through 30 games. Addtionally, the Huskers rank second in the conference in fielding percentage, and ninth nationally. ALLY RILEY MAKING NOISE ON OFFENSE Freshman Ally Riley started the season as the backup catcher behind Bri Cassidy, but when the Husker bats went quiet, Riley moved into the batting order and has made several appearances since. Riley has played in 16 games, which includes12 starts. Her.425 batting average leads the team and her.525 slugging percentage ranks third. Riley has 17 hits, with four double, two runs and 11 RBIs. In the Wichita State series, Riley, along with fellow freshman, Olivia Ferrell, led the offensive efforts on the team. Riley went 3-for-8 with three RBIs. Together, her and Ferrell, went 5-for-12 (.417) over the weekend, while the rest of the team was 10-for-58 (.172). At the Jayhawk Invitational, Riley also led the team at the plate. going 4-for-8, with two RBIs. In the South Dakota State doubleheader Riley went for a combined 5-for-6, with three RBIs. Simmons stats have significanly improved since her move. Three Huskers have made starts at third this season, including sophomores Lexey Kneib and Alexis Perry, and freshman Sarah Yocom. Yocom was thrown into the mix at the Easton Invitational as she made two starts at the position. Kneib has seen the most starts, with 20, while Perry has made eight. The deciding factor could have more to do with offense than defense though, as all three have played well at third when they ve had the opportunity.
