As word spread about this unique softball setting, Triple Crown Sports and city officials at Puerto Vallarta agreed to pool resources and improve almost every aspect of Nancy Almaraz Stadium, site of the event. While the tournament was not held in 2016, there was enough time to complete the work on the stadium, as well as contact more D-1 fastpitch programs to build a dynamic 10-team field for Session #2 Thursday, February 15 Houston vs. Oregon, 2 p.m. CT Rutgers vs. Texas, 5 p.m. CT Ole Miss vs. Texas, 8 p.m. CT Friday, February 16 Houston vs. Ole Miss, 2 p.m. CT Rutgers vs. Oregon, 5 p.m. CT Texas vs. Oregon, 8 p.m. CT Saturday, February 17 Ole Miss vs. Rutgers, 11 a.m. CT Rutgers vs. Houston, 2 p.m. CT Texas vs. Houston, 5 p.m. CT Oregon vs. Ole Miss, 8 p.m. CT - Facebook.com/PVCollegeChallenge PAST PARTICIPANTS With its February placement, the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge offers programs a warm-weather setting to help launch their spring schedules, while also giving fans a chance to follow their favorite teams while enjoying a memorable oceanside resort retreat and vacation. 3 TEAM NOTES JAMES MADISON (Colonial Athletic) 2017 Record: 50-8 James Madison capped off yet another successful season in Harrisonburg last year, finishing with a mark of 50-8 and a conference record of 18-2, finishing first in the Colonial Athletic Association. Unsurprisingly, James Madison paced the CAA in batting with a team average of.347 and pitching with an overall ERA of Head coach Mickey Dean departed for the top job at Auburn, with Loren LaPorte taking over at JMU. With five seniors having graduated, the roster has a different shape, but the larger issue is the loss of Megan Good to a knee injury suffered this fall. In 2017, Good was selected as one of 10 finalists for the USA Softball College Player of the Year; she is expected to get a medical redshirt and return for the 2019 campaign. LA TECH (Conference USA) 2017 Record: LA Tech rode its overall record and 16-8 mark in the Conference USA to a first-place finish in the conference and a trip to the NCAA Tournament regional round. Under fifth-year head coach Mark Montgomery, the Lady Techsters were tops in the conference in a number of offensive categories, including runs scored (316), hits (454), RBI (281), doubles (88) and triples (15). LA Tech will lose five to graduation, but will return Morgan Turkoly, who led the Techsters in batting (.370) and slugging (.551). LA Tech s 2017 NCAA appearance was the 10th in school history and the first since LONG BEACH STATE (Big West) 2017 Record: The 49ers cruised to a record in 2017 with a Big West Conference mark of 11-10, finishing fourth. Twelve-year head coach Kim Sowder will lose four to graduation, but will return her stud freshman Cielo Meza. Meza in her first year at Long Beach, started 12 games, pitched six complete games, struck out 56 and finished with a 1.26 ERA, which ranked second in the Big West. Sowder will also welcome back her top offensive player a year ago in Hannah Cookson. Cookson ended the season starting 49 of 52 games, batted.290 in 155 plate appearances and paced the team with three triples. NEVADA (Mountain West) 2017 Record: The Wolf Pack pieced together an impressive 30-win season in An overall mark of and a Mountain West Conference record of earned Nevada a birth into the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championships. Nevada racked up two wins before falling to the eventual regional winner Cal Poly. Five Wolf Pack seniors will leave Reno due to graduation, but that group of impressive women does not include Erika Hansen, who in her junior year boasted a.627 slugging percentage, 61 RBI and 13 home runs all of which were top five in the conference. The Nevada pitching staff, led by Kali Sargent, were tops in the Mountain West in striking out batters looking, tallying 91 backwards K s in the scorebooks in HOUSTON (American Athletic) 2017 Record: Kristin Vesely, in just her second season at the helm of the Cougar softball program, led Houston to a record and an American Athletic Conference mark of Finishing second in the regular season, Houston glided through the AAC Tournament before running up against Tulsa in the championship, falling just short, 1-0. As a team, the Cougars paced the conference in batting (.302), on base percentage (.383), runs scored (286), hits (437) and RBI (250). Vesely loses just three players to graduation from the 2017 roster. Sophomore outfielder Maya Thomas will return for her third year in Southeast Texas. Last season, Thomas led the Cougars offensively, averaging.435 at the plate.

4 TEAM NOTES OLE MISS (Southeastern) 2017 Record: Mike Smith, in his fourth year at the helm of the Rebels led his squad to a season and a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals. With a mark in the SEC, Ole Miss finished eighth in the conference, but sailed through the SEC tournament, giving up only three runs in four games. Smith will return all but four of his players from a season ago. Among those returning is Kaitlin Lee. As a junior, Lee appeared in 44 games, starting in 37. Lee also finished 2017 with 27 complete games, 10 solo shutouts and the only save for the Rebel pitching staff. Elantra Cox joins Lee for her swan song in Oxford. Cox paced Ole Miss offensively, batting.429 at the dish with five doubles, four triples and a conference-leading 93 hits. OREGON (PAC-12) 2017 Record: 54-8 Oregon kicked off its 2017 season with a NCAA record-trying 35 consecutive victories. In what many tabbed as a supposed rebuilding year, the Ducks finished 54-8, making it to the Women s College World Series, before running up against the eventual national champion Oklahoma Sooners. All three starting pitchers (Maggie Balint, Megan Kleist and Miranda Elish), each underclassmen, recorded an ERA below 2.0, resulting in the PAC-12 s best overall ERA (1.41). Oregon s 17-6 conference mark also had them one half game shy of its fifth straight conference title. Alexis Mack and Danica Mercado finished first and second respectively in stolen bases in the PAC-12 with 28 and 25 a piece. Head coach Mike white will lose just three seniors on his 2018 roster. Seven Ducks were named to the NFCA All-Region team, five of them (Megan Kleist, Mia Camuso, Alexis Mack, Maggie Balint and Gwen Svekis) will return for the 2018 campaign. RUTGERS (Big Ten) 2017 Record: Twelve-year head coach Jay Nelson led the Scarlet Knights to an overall record of and a Big Ten Conference mark of Rutgers welcomes back the sight of Taryn Atlee, the Scarlet Knights standout freshman. Atlee in just her first season in Piscataway led the team in batting (.393), on base percentage (.443), runs scored (35), hits (66) and stolen bases (10). The freshman started 34 games at second base and 17 in the hole at shortstop, boasting a.942 fielding percentage en route to a first team All-Big Ten selection. Rebecca Hall returns for her senior season. Hall batted.320 with 12 home runs and 11 doubles. Her totals garnered national attention, selected as NFCA All-Great Lakes Region First Team. TEXAS (Big 12) 2017 Record: As one of the most tenured coaches in all of collegiate softball, Connie Clark has guided her Longhorn program through thick and thin. With a record in 2017 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 7-10, Texas finished fourth in the Big 12 and was selected to its 13th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance. The Longhorns got off to a rocky start against Texas State, then rallied to pick up wins against the Bobcats and Texas Southern before running into host Texas A&M, knocking them out of the tournament. Despite graduating seven seniors from the 2017 roster, Texas will get back freshman Taylor Ellsworth. In her first season wearing the burnt orange, Ellsworth paced the team in batting, going.394 at the plate, adding six doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI.
