OU has earned a national seed each of the last 10 seasons and is a top-3 seed for the third time since the Super Regional format was introduced in Advancing out of the Norman Regional, OU hosts No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette this weekend in the Super Regional. Game one is set for Thursday night, while game two and an if necessary game will take place Friday night at Marita Hynes Field. Games one and two of the series will be on ESPN2, while game three will be on ESPNU if necessary. Adam Amin will handle play-by-play duties with analyst Amanda Scarborough. Against the NCAA Tournament field this year, the Sooners were an impressive 20-6 (.769) during the regular season. SUPER REGIONAL EXPERIENCE Oklahoma is making its 10th overall appearance in the Super Regionals since the format was introduced in Only three schools have been to more Supers, while OU also ranks eighth in all-time Super Regional wins and win percentage of teams that have been to at least five Super Regionals. Since OU head coach Patty Gasso arrived in 1995 the Sooners are against the Ragin Cajuns. The teams have met four times previously in the postseason with Oklahoma owning a 3-1 edge in those meetings. The teams split a pair of games in the Tucson Regional Final in 2004 as OU advanced. They met again the following year in the Norman Regional with the Sooners winning 6-3. The last meeting between the schools came in the 2014 WCWS as OU won 3-1. This season has seen OU and ULL play three common opponents: Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech. The Sooners took one of three games in Lafayette before winning again in the WCWS. Oklahoma took the series opener, 13-5, behind a 3-RBI, 2-4 game from Erin Miller. Kelsey Stevens got the win as she struck out seven and allowed five runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. Louisana-Lafayette came back in game two to secure a 7-0 win as OU s lone hit came in the top of the seventh. The Ragin Cajuns then swept the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in game two. OU and ULL were paired up once again in the loser s bracket of the 2014 WCWS where the Sooners won 3-1. Stevens struck out seven and stranded 11 runners. PARKER ENJOYS ANOTHER DOMINANT RUN Before giving up two runs in the third inning to Wichita State in the Regionals, Paige Parker hadn t allowed a run over the last 23.0 IP and hadn t given up an earned run in 32.2 IP. She has eight career streaks of 20.0 scoreless IP, including four this year. And they ve done just that. Sydney Romero (3B), Caleigh Clifton (2B) and Shay Knighten (1B) have assumed starting roles in the infield, while Fale Aviu has been the starting designated player for the past few weeks. Outfielders Kylie Lundberg and Raegan Rogers have also seen playing time with Rogers serving as the team s top pinch runner. Pitchers Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney have combined to appear in 31 games with eight starts, going 10-0 with a 2.50 earned run average in 86.2 innings. Featuring eight freshman, the 2016 class is the largest ever under Patty Gasso and the largest for the program since nine were on the 1988 squad. Nearing the end of the season, the 2016 squad isn t too far behind, and is even ahead of, what last year s team did at this same point in some categories. TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR SOONERS IN 2016 Fifteen opponents that reached the 2015 NCAA Softball Tournament, including half of the field from the Women s College World Series, highlighted Oklahoma s 2016 schedule. KNIGHTEN A TOP 3 FINALIST FOR NFCA S TOP FRESHMAN Shay Knighten is one of three finalists for the 2016 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year. Fellow Sooner Sydney Romero joined Knighten as one of 25 finalists for the honor. Knighten was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time in her career on April 19. She was the first OU freshman to be Big 12 Player of the Week since Lauren Chamberlain on May 15, Knighten was nearly impossible to get out, reaching base 11 times in 13 plate appearances. She was 7-9 at the plate with four walks, three runs scored, a double, home run, eight runs batted in and two stolen bases. Her batting average was.778, while she slugged and posted an OBP of.846. RECORD-TYING EIGHT SOONERS NAMED ALL-REGION Oklahoma tied a school record by having all eight of its nominees named to the 2016 NFCA All-Central Region Team, including five first-team honorees. Senior Erin Miller, sophomores Kelsey Arnold and Paige Parker and freshmen Caleigh Clifton and Shay Knighten were all selected for the First Team. Sophomore Lea Wodach and freshman Sydney Romero were placed on the Second Team, and freshman Fale Aviu was named to the Third Team. It marks the third straight season that OU had eight selections. The only other schools to have eight All-Region choices this year were Michigan and Oregon. Senior Erin Miller was named co-big 12 Player of the Year with Oklahoma State s Vanessa Shippy to become the first outfielder in history to win the award. It marks the second year in a row, the fourth time in the last five years and the sixth time in the last eight years that a Sooner has won the award. Miller is the ninth different Sooner to be Big 12 Player of the Year and her win marks the 11th such honor in program annals. Paige Parker was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year for the second year in a row, joining Texas Cat Osterman as the only players to win the award as both a freshman and sophomore. Parker becomes the fourth player to win the award more than once in league history and the first Sooner to do so. Shay Knighten became the fifth Sooner to be recognized as the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, while Kelsey Arnold was fourth Sooner to be Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Patty Gasso was chosen as the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the ninth time in her career as she guided OU to an unprecedented fifth consecutive league crown with a program-best 17-1 mark. She has won the award in each of the last five seasons, while no other coach in the history of the league has even won the honor more than three times. Parker, Knighten and Miller were each named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while sophomore Nicole Pendley and freshmen Caleigh Clifton, Fale Aviu and Sydney Romero were placed on the All-Big 12 Second Team. Knighten, Clifton, Aviu and Romero also were named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team. RECORD NINE NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 A school record nine Sooners earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, breaking the previous program record of eight honorees in The Sooners also had a school record seven studentathletes on the first team. Paige Parker and Lea Wodach each had 4.00 GPAs to lead the first team honorees. They were joined on the first team by Erin Miller, Kelsey Stevens, Kady Self, Tori Nirschl and Nicole Pendley. Parker was also named to the Academic All-District team. The Sooners were represented on the second team by Paris Townsend and Kelsey Arnold. PARKER S WINS FIFTH BIG 12 WEEKLY HONOR Paige Parker was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time this season on May 18. Going 2-0 vs. Oklahoma State, she gave up just two hits in 7.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking just two. Parker also won Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on May 10, April 12, March 15 and Feb. 23. She has 12 such honors in her career, tying her for fourth all-time with Missouri s Chelsea Thomas. Only Texas Cat Osterman (25), OU s Keilani Ricketts (16) and Texas Blaire Luna (13) have more. Her fourth honor came after going 3-0 over Tulsa and Texas Tech. She gave up one unearned run and seven hits while striking out 25 and walking just two in 19.0 innings. Parker made three starts and threw three complete games with two shutouts, while opponents hit just.115 off her. Parker was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, the ESPNW National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on April 12 after OU swept Baylor. This is the second time in her career that Parker has been named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, also doing so on April 6 last year. She joins Ricketts as the only players in program history to win the award more than once. She was 4-0 on the week and threw three complete games with two shutouts in four starts with a 0.81 earned run average as she gave up three earned runs in 26.0 innings. Parker struck out 19 and walked six while opponents hit just.234 off her. Her second Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award came on March 15 when she went 4-0, did not allow a run in 18.0 innings of work and threw the fifth no-hitter of career. She gave up just four hits and struck out 22 against just three walks while throwing two shutouts and combining on another. Opponents hit just.070 against Parker on the weekend. In taking her first honor of the year, she won both starts in complete game efforts at the Troy Cox Classic, giving up one run in 11.0 innings while striking out 15 and walking one. PARKER A TOP-25 FINALIST FOR NATIONAL POY Paige Parker was chosen as one of 25 finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, but she did not make the the Top 10 Finalists when they were announced May 11. MILLER A FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Erin Miller is one of 10 finalists for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in college softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award recipient for softball will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Women s College World Series in Oklahoma City, June 2-8. ROMERO WINS FIRST BIG 12 WEEKLY HONOR Sydney Romero was named Big 12 Player of the Week on May 18, winning for the first time in her career. Romero was the driving offensive force as No. 5 Oklahoma went 2-0 against Oklahoma State. She was 3-6 on the weekend with a home run, four runs batted in, a slugging percentage of and on-base percentage of.571. REGIONAL RECAP After winning the Norman Regional, the Sooners have won 16 straight Regional games and 21 of 22 such contests dating back to They are all-time in Regional play. OU used a five-run first, including Nicole Pendley s first career grand slam, to seize early momentum en route to a 7-2 win over Wichita State in the opening game of the Regional. A seven-run second inning pushed OU to the Regional final after a 9-1, five-inning victory over Ole Miss. Shay Knighten tied a career high with three hits and drove in four. Paige Parker needed just 83 pitches to throw her 13th shutout of the season as OU advanced to the Super Regionals with a 3-0 win over Ole Miss. She took a perfect game into the fourth and finished with a four-hitter, while striking out nine. BEDLAM SWEEP CLOSES OUT REGULAR SEASON OU scored five runs in the first and three in the fourth to close out an 8-0, five-inning win over Oklahoma State. The game started Friday night in Stillwater, but was postponed to Saturday in Norman after the top of the second due to rain. Sydney Romero (3-run HR) and Nicole Pendley (solo) hit back-to-back homers in a first inning that saw OU send 11 to the plate in and score its five runs on six hits. Oklahoma then scored all five runs in the first two innings en route to winning its 13th straight game over Oklahoma State and sweeping the Cowgirls for the fifth straight season in a 5-2 win later on Saturday afternoon.

Erin Miller reached in each plate appearance, going 2-2 with a homer, two walks and three RBI. OU clinched a share of the title in Saturday s 4-0 win. Lea Wodach and Shay Knighten each hit two-run homers, while Paige Parker faced the minimum 21 batters and struck out nine. The Sooners won the title outright with another run-rule, 10-1, Sunday. Oklahoma scored four runs in each of the first two innings and added two more runs in the third. WIN STREAK OVER ISU AT 27 AFTER SWEEP IN AMES OU s win streak over Iowa State is at 27 games after sweeping a three-game series in Ames. The Sooners only have longer active win streaks over Wichita State (32) and North Texas (28). In the opener, the Sooners trailed 2-1 after four innings before taking the lead back in the top of the fifth. OU then held off a late scoring chance in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-2. Kelsey Stevens threw her third complete game of the season in an 8-1 win in game two. She gave up just one unearned run and matched a season high by striking out nine. To close out the sweep, OU matched a season high in runs during a 12-1 victory. Four different Sooners had multi-hit games, including a career-high three hits from Fale Aviu. Shay Knighten and Caleigh Clifton each homered in the game, while Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney combined on the win. SOONERS MAKE STATEMENT IN TENNESSEE WEEKEND OU opened the Tennessee Classic with a 9-0 win over host- No. 12/13 Tennessee. Nicole Pendley keyed the offense with a three-run homer, while Paige Parker threw a five-hit shutout. The loss was the first at home this season for Tennessee and snapped a 19-game home winning streak dating back to last season. The 9-0 win was the team s largest margin of victory over a top-25 team since an 11-0, five-inning win over No. 24 Kentucky on Feb. 16, 2013 and the largest margin of victory over a ranked team on the road since a 10-0, five-inning win at No. 24 Kansas on March 23, The Sooners then scored seven runs over the first three innings Saturday en route to a 9-0, five-inning win over Radford. Jayden Chestnut had a career-high 12 strikeouts as OU finished unbeaten on the weekend with a 2-0 win over Lipscomb. RED RIVER SWEEP Oklahoma swept Texas last weekend in a three-game series, running its winning streak to seven games over the Longhorns, its longest ever win streak in the series. OU withstood multiple rallies to hold off Texas in game one of a doubleheader, 9-8. The top of the order made the difference for Oklahoma. Erin Miller, Sydney Romero and Shay Knighten combined to go 7-10 with eight runs scored and five runs driven in. Miller was also the hero in game two as she hit a walk-off, two-run homer in OU s 5-3 win. Miller and Romero sparked the Oklahoma offense from the top of the order in another 5-3 victory. Miller was 2-2 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI, while Romero went 2-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. In the circle, Kelsey Stevens and Paige Parker combined on the win for OU. SOONERS ALSO SWEEP BAYLOR IN WACO Oklahoma became the first team since 1996 to sweep a three-game series at Baylor last weekend, taking over first place in the Big 12 standings in the process. Three home runs Paige Parker s shutout as Oklahoma struck first in the series, 5-0. Parker struck out five and walked three in tossing her seventh shutout of the year, while Sydney Romero hit a solo homer and Erin Miller and Tori Nirschl each added two-run shots in the victory. Kady Self hit a grand slam in the eighth inning and Parker threw a complete game shutout as OU clinched the series with a 4-0 win. Baylor was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since the second and third games of the 2013 season. The Lady Bears didn t get a runner past first base, and after a leadoff single in the fifth, Parker retired the final 12 batters. The Sooners finished the weekend with a 7-4 victory to complete the sweep. Parker earned her third win of the weekend and her fifth straight victory over the Lady Bears dating back to last season. Nicole Pendley had a season-high four RBI, including a three-run homer in the fifth that turned out to be the game-winning hit. OU TAKES SERIES WIN OVER KANSAS Caleigh Clifton s first career home run was a walk-off grand slam as OU beat Kansas in the series opener, 5-2. Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, the Sooners rallied for five runs on three hits, two walks and an error. OU then saw its winning streak over Kansas in Norman end at 24 games with a 5-2 loss. The Sooners left a season-high 12 runners on base, include two runners in five separate innings. In the finale, Paige Parker struck out a season-high 12 batters as OU captured a series victory over Kansas with a 4-0 win. She struck out two batters in each of the first six innings and retired 17 straight batters at one point. SOONERS OPEN BIG 12 PLAY WITH BEDLAM WIN A tight Bedlam contest turned into a run-rule win as the Sooners beat Oklahoma State in five innings, With Oklahoma leading 3-2 after four innings, the Sooners hit three home runs in a seven-run fifth to notch their 11th straight win in the series. Shay Knighten hit a two-run homer, Kady Self added a three-run shot later in the inning and Erin Miller hit a walk-off, two-run blast to right field to end it. Oklahoma is also now 16-5 all-time in Big 12 openers. In fact, OU has won five straight such games, outscoring opponents 39-6 during the streak. TWO TOP-25 WINS HIGHLIGHT FULLERTON WEEKEND Oklahoma opened play at the Easton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif., with a 6-1 win over DePaul. Erin Miller and Sydney Romero each had three hits, while the team had 15 total for the third straight game. Kelsey Stevens and Jayden Chestnut combined on a three-hitter. The Sooners held a 3-0 lead through two innings against Cal State Fullerton, but the Titans rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third en route to handing OU its first road loss of the season, 7-5. The Sooners helped Fullerton in the inning by committing two errors and issuing five walks. Batting leadoff for the first time this season, Erin Miller matched a season high for hits by going 3-5 at the plate and drove in a season-best four runs. She doubled, homered and scored twice in OU s 7-1 win over Grand Canyon. The Sooners secured arguably their biggest win of the year when Shay Knighten hit a two-run walk-off home run to beat No. 6 Alabama, 2-0. Paige Parker struck out five with no walks and just two hits allowed as she threw her fourth shutout. OU backed it up with a 4-2 win over No. 23/25 Nebraska. Nicole Pendley drove in three, while Parker pitched 7.0 shutout innings in relief. She struck out six while giving up just two hits.

11 2016 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 11 Now in her 22nd season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country as evident by her selection to the 2012 NFCA Hall of Fame class. The Sooners have reached the postseason in each one of her 22 seasons, and in the process, advanced to the Women s College World Series nine times.
