This year marks the 13th consecutive season the Sooners have appeared in the tournament, participating every year since In that time, OU has gone (.683) at the event. u The Sooners are set to face No. 17/15 Arizona State (Thursday, 8 p.m. CT), BYU (Friday, 5 p.m. CT), North Carolina (Saturday, 11:30 a.m. CT) and No. 13/12 Arizona (Saturday, 2 p.m. CT) at the event. Additionally, Oklahoma will take on Team Japan in an exhibition contest on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. CT. u Arizona State and Arizona are OU s first ranked opponents of the season. In 2016, OU went 13-5 against top-25 opponents. Additionally, the Sooners matchup with Team Japan marks the first time in program history that OU has faced an international opponent. u Oklahoma also entered the 2016 Mary Nutter Classic ranked No. 4/5. The Sooners finished the 2016 event with a 3-2 record, including a 10-1 run-rule win over No. 6/4 UCLA in five innings. u All of Oklahoma s games this weekend will be played on Wrigley Field at the Big League Dreams Sports Park. u Every game can be heard on KEBC 1560 in Norman or online via Franchise 2. The Terriers struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. OU responded with a run in the bottom of the frame and added two more in the third to take a 3-2 advantage. However, the Sooners were undone by mistakes in the sixth inning as they committed three errors and gave up two runs (both unearned) to Boston. u OU bounced back in the nightcap, shutting out New Mexico State 2-0. The win marked the first time the Aggies had been blanked in a regular-season matchup since April 18, 2017, a streak of 13 games. Junior Sydney Romero drove in both of OU's runs in the game, marking her second time this season she recorded multiple RBIs in a matchup. BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS OPEN SEASON IN PHOENIX u The Sooners began their title defense on Feb. 9-11, opening the 2018 slate with a dominant 5-0 showing at the GCU Kickoff Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. OU outscored its opponents 35-4, opening the event with wins over Weber State (6-3) and Grand Canyon (8-1). The Sooners did not allow another run that weekend, defeating Montana 4-0 and Grand Canyon 10-0 in five innings on Saturday before taking down Pacific 7-0 on Sunday. u OU s 5-0 start to the season marks the first time the Sooners have won their first five games since 2015, when Oklahoma opened the year 9-0. Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll, a run of 340 straight polls. u The Sooners opened their 2018 campaign as the preseason favorite in both the NFCA and USA Softball preseason polls, marking the second straight year that OU is ranked No. 1 in both. Prior to last year, OU had never entered a season with the top ranking in either poll. The Sooners also remained in the top spot in both polls after week one. u Overall, the Sooners rank third with 18 top-10 appearances in the NFCA preseason poll, trailing only Arizona (20) and UCLA (19). This marks the eighth straight year the Sooners have started in the NFCA s top 10, good for the nation s longest active streak. u Oklahoma also entered its 2018 campaign as the preseason pick to win the Big 12, as each of the other six head coaches placed the Sooners in the top spot (coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams). u This is the sixth straight year and ninth in the last 10 that OU has topped the Big 12 s preseason poll. OU received 36 points in this year s poll and was followed by Baylor, which received the other first-place vote, at 31 points, Texas (24 points), Oklahoma State (23 points), Kansas (12 points), Iowa State (11 points) and Texas Tech (10 points). BACK IN FORCE u The Sooners lost just one letterwinner from their 2017 national championship squad, returning 16 in OU will return seven position starters in senior infielder Kelsey Arnold, senior outfielder Nicole Pendley, senior catcher Lea Wodach, junior infielders Caleigh Clifton, Shay Knighten and Sydney Romero and sophomore utility player Nicole Mendes as well as all three primary pitchers from 2017 in seniors Paige Lowary and Paige Parker and sophomore Mariah Lopez. u All three of Oklahoma's 2017 All-Americans return in 2018, as Clifton, Knighten and Parker were all recognized as NFCA Second-Team All-Americans last season. u Additionally, the Sooners return all nine of their 2017 All-Big 12 honorees. Returning first-team All-Big 12 selections are Knighten, Lowary, Mendes (unanimous pick) and Parker. Returning second-team All-Big 12 honorees are junior outfielder Falepolima Aviu, Clifton, Pendley and Romero. Mendes and Lopez were members of the 2017 Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Knighten was named 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year, Parker was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year for the third time, and Patty Gasso was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the 10th time. u Overall, Oklahoma returns 89.3 percent of its 2017 hits, 95.5 percent of its 2017 home runs, 89.1 percent of its RBIs and 85.7 percent of its stolen bases. u OU also welcomes five newcomers this year in freshmen utility player Jocelyn Alo, catcher Lynnsie Elam, infielder Eliyah Flores and outfielder Alexa Schultz, and Missouri transfer pitcher Parker Conrad. FIVE NAMED TO PLAYER OF YEAR WATCH LIST u A nation-high five members of the OU softball team were named to the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, USA Softball announced on Jan. 31. Senior pitchers Paige Lowary and Paige Parker and junior infielders Caleigh Clifton, Shay Knighten and Sydney Romero are among the 50 student-athletes on the preseason watch list. u Oklahoma alumna Keilani Ricketts was a two-time recipient of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award (2012 and 2013), considered the most prestigious honor in NCAA Division I Softball.

Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla. u Former Sooners Shelby Pendley and Keilani Ricketts and current student-athletes Caleigh Clifton, Shay Knighten, Paige Lowary, Nicole Mendes and Sydney Romero took part in the camp. Former Sooner Lauren Chamberlain and current senior Paige Parker also received invitations but declined to participate. u The nine invitations given to Sooners were more than any other program with Florida (8), Oregon (6), UCLA (6) and Arizona (5) the only other schools to receive at least five. u Additionally, Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso has been named head coach of the United States second national team that will compete in the World Cup of Softball in Irvine, Calif., in July. Gasso will also serve as a USA assistant coach at the Japan All-Star Series in June. THIS WEEKEND S OPPONENTS u Oklahoma and Arizona State will meet for the 27th time in program history on Thursday evening, with Arizona State holding a advantage over the Sooners all-time. However, OU has the upper hand in neutral site contests, winning 8 of 12 matchups. The two programs most recently met twice in February of OU won the first game 5-1 before the Sun Devils claimed an 8-4 victory in the second. u OU has won six of seven all-time meetings with BYU, including the last five. This marks the third consecutive season that the Sooners and the Cougars will face off. In 2017, OU downed BYU 7-1 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, and in 2016, the Sooners defeated BYU twice in Norman by scores of 8-0 (five innings) and 3-0. u The Sooners have never lost to North Carolina, defeating the Tar Heels four times in Norman and three times in neutralsite contests. The tournament will also mark the first ever meetings between Oklahoma and Abilene Christian WCWS RECAP u For the second straight year, third time in the last five and fourth overall, the Oklahoma softball team finished the 2017 season as national champions. u Tenth-seeded Oklahoma took the hard route out of the Norman Regional after losing its opening game with North Dakota State, 3-2, in nine innings. From there, OU survived elimination games with Arkansas and NDSU to reach the finals with Tulsa. Oklahoma was down 4-2 entering the 10th against the Golden Hurricane but Caleigh Clifton hit a game-tying two-run home run and Sydney Romero followed later with a walk-off, two-run shot to extend OU s season. Oklahoma came back the next day and advanced with a 3-0 win over Tulsa. According to ESPN research, the Sooners became just the eighth team out of 416 since 2005 to advance to the Super Regionals after losing their opening game of the postseason. u The Sooners then visited No. 7 Auburn in the Super Regional. In game one, Paige Parker struck out 14 in a 4-0 shutout, while Oklahoma punched its ticket to the WCWS with a 5-2 win in game two. u In the WCWS opener, Nicole Pendley s three-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning as the Sooners held off Big 12 foe and 15th-seeded Baylor, 6-3. The win matched the Sooners up with No. 6 Washington and OU prevailed with a 3-1 win as Romero homered and Parker and Paige Lowary combined to give up just one run on three hits. OU then reached the WCWS Championship Series behind a 4-2 win over Oregon. The Ducks led 2-0 after the top of the fifth, but the Sooners became the first team in the 2017 WCWS to take the lead after trailing, thanks to a four-run fifth inning. u Game one of the WCWS Championship Series was an instant classic as the Sooners prevailed 7-5 in 17 innings, the longest game in Finals history (since 2005). Twice Oklahoma had Florida down to its final out, but the Gators rallied in the bottom of the seventh and bottom of the 12th to prolong the game. In the top of the 17th, Shay Knighten hit a three-run homer to put the Sooners up for good. Lowary threw a career-high 10.1 innings to earn the win for OU. u Oklahoma swept the WCWS Championship Series with a 5-4 win in game two. Nicole Mendes hit a solo home run to lead off the game, only to see Florida pull ahead 3-1 going to the bottom of the second. Knighten was again the hero as she hit a bases-loaded double, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Four pitchers combined on the win. u With four national titles Oklahoma trails only UCLA (11) and Arizona (8) for most in NCAA history. No other team has more than two. u The Sooners reached the Women s College World Series for the 11th time in program history and sixth time in the last seven years. u Oklahoma made it to the Super Regionals for the eighth straight season and 11th time overall. OU has reached the postseason in each of the last 24 seasons, including all 23 under head coach Patty Gasso. QUICK HITS u The 2017 Oklahoma softball coaches head coach Patty Gasso, associate head coach Melyssa Lombardi, assistant coach J.T. Gasso and volunteer assistant coach Andrea Gasso were named the NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the year. Gasso s 2000 and 2013 staffs, which included Lombardi, were also tabbed the nation s best after the Sooners won their first two national titles. OU has been recognized as the Division I Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year for each of the last six seasons. u In July 2017, now-sophomore pitcher Mariah Lopez was added to the 2017 USA Softball Junior Women s National Training Team, which won gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Junior Women s World Championship in Clearwater, Fla. u During fall exhibition play, the Sooners recorded a perfect 7-0 record. 8 2018 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 8 Having recently completed her 23rd season at the University of Oklahoma, NFCA Hall of Fame head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country. Oklahoma has won four national championships, winning in 2000, 2013, 2016 and OU is one of just three programs in NCAA history to win more than two national titles. She s reached the Women s College World Series 11 times during her tenure, and in the process, advanced to the postseason in each of her 23 seasons. With 27 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of 1, (.774) and holds an overall record of 1, (.781) at the University of Oklahoma. Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (307-85) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 53 All-Americans, 118 All-Region honorees and 144 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, nine Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 11 times, five have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, three as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year four times and one as Big 12 Newcomer. In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while Shelby Pendley joined her in winning the award twice in 2013 and The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 121 academic all-conference honors, including a program-record nine in Eleven of those have gone on to become Academic All- Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year. Gasso and her staff have consistently been recognized for their efforts on and off the field.
