Eichelberger Field 52 HUSKERS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH FIGHTING ILLINI The Nebraska softball team closes the regular season this weekend when it travels to Illinois to face the Fighting Illini May 4-6. Game one will be played Friday at 5 p.m. Game two will be Saturday at 1 p.m. and the series finale will be Sunday at noon. All three games will be available on Huskers. com (radio) and FloSoftball/BTNPlus (subscription required). The Huskers have lost their last six games, but are looking to bounce back against the Illini and have a strong finish to the regular season before the postseason begins. Scouting Illinois Illinois enters the series with a record, which includes an 11-7 record in conference play. With just weekend left in the regular season, Illinois has a lot to play for. The Illini are currently sitting in sixth place in the Big Ten standings, but are just 1.5 games out of fourth place, which would give them a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend. A good performance this weekend against Nebraska and losses from higherranked teams could set the Illini up for a good position in the tournament. Most recently, Illinois smashed IUPUI on Tuesday night in a midweek game. The Fighting Illini smashed three home runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-2 victory. Last weekend, Illinois went 201 against Penn State in University Park, Pa. The Illini won the first two games by a combined score of 21-8, but lost the finale by one run in nine innings. At the plate, Illinois is led by Kiana Sherlund and Carly Thomas, who have each started all 50 games for the Illini. Sherlund leads the team with a.401 batting average, which ranks fifth in the conference. Additionally, her 44 RBIs rank fourth, while her eight ILLINOIS May 5 1 p.m. CT BTNPlus/FloSoftball (stream) Huskers.com (radio) triples, 115 total bases, 51 runs scored and 75 hits all rank first in the Big Ten. Thomas ranks second on the team with a.373 batting average and is tied for first with 44 RBIs. Stephanie Abello (.365), Bella Loya (.358), Maddi Doane (.354) and Sam Acosta (.321) are all hitting over.300 on the year as well. In the circle, most of the action is split between Taylor Edwards (14-7) and Emily Oestreich (14-8). The two combine for 45 starts and innings pitched. Edwards has a 3.34 ERA, while Oestreich has a 3.63 ERA. Edwards has pitched six complete games, included two solo shutouts. She also has 47 strikeouts. Oestreich has pitched a team-high 7 complete games and two shutouts. She also has a teambest 94 strikeouts on the year. As a team, Illinois is fielding.952 and has 72 errors through 50 games. The team has given up 50 unearned runs this season. 2 NUMBERS TO KNOW Senior pitcher Kaylan Jablonski needs two more saves to reach eight on the season and pass Rhonda Revelle on Nebraska s all-time saves list. She is currently tied for second with six. Junior oufielder Alyvia 4 Simmons has four triples this season, despite having one her first two years combined. Her four rank 10th on Nebraska s all-time list ILLINOIS May 6 Noon CT BTNPlus/FloSoftball (stream) Huskers.com (radio) Tristen Edwards is one of 13 players in Husker history to have at least 10 doubles and 10 home runs in the same season. Alyvia Simmons has reached base the last eight consecutive 8 games. Her longest on-base streak of the season is 12 games. Three Huskers have 10 or more multi-hit games this 3 season, including Tristen Edwards (14), Kaylan Jablonski (11) and Alyvia Simmons (10). 2 SEASON NOTEBOOK DUO RETURNS AS ALL-REGION, ALL-BIG TEN PICKS Senior Kaylan Jablonski and junior Alyvia Simmons return in 2018 as all-region picks and all-conference honorees. Both Jablonski and Simmons earned third-team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors and second-team all-big Ten accolades in Jablonski was a star both on offense and defense for the Huskers last season. She batted.263 in 43 games and had 31 hits, with 12 doubles and five homers. She totaled 29 RBIs and finished the season with a slugging percentage of the highest of her career. In the circle, Jablonski appeared in 40 games and pitched 10 complete games. She claimed 11 wins and finished with a career-low 4.31 ERA. Simmons was explosive on offense, batting.333 and slugging.513 in both which were career highs. She had 50 hits, almost doubling her count from On defense, she started 44 games and was the only Husker to start at least one game at all three outfield spots. HUSKERS ADD JUCO STANDOUT Prior to the season the Huskers added righthanded pitcher Regan Mergele to their roster. Mergele comes from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., where she helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships in 2016 and Mergele was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year and the NJCAA Division I Championship s Most Outstanding Pitcher in Mergele finished her two-year junior college career with a 1.07 ERA and an overall record of Additionally, she claimed All-America honors twice from both the NJCAA and the NFCA. Mergele will have two years of eligibility with the Huskers and is active for the 2018 season. REVELLE COACHES 1,500TH GAME Head coach Rhonda Revelle coached her 1,500th career game on Friday, March 16 against Grand Canyon. This includes 26 seasons at Nebraska and one season (1987) at Nebraska Wesleyan. MARCH MADNESS The Huskers play a total of 22 games in March, including seven games in six days (March 9-14) and 12 games in 10 days (March 9-18). NEWCOMERS IN 2018 With the addition of five freshmen and junior college transfer Regan Mergele, almost onethird of the 2018 roster consists of new faces. UNZICKER BACK ON THE FIELD The Huskers are enjoying the return of junior infielder Madi Unzicker, who missed all of the 2017 season after having knee surgery prior to the start of the season. Unzicker has started every game this season. She s batting.215 this season, with 14 hits, three doubles, one triple, three homers and 11 RBIs. INFIELD GETS NEW LOOK Nebraska s infield looks much different from last season as only two of the five regular starters from last year return to the same positions. Bri Cassidy (catcher) and Laura Barrow (second base) return. Madi Unzicker - who didn t play last season due to injury - will takeover at first. Tristen Edwards will play shortstop for the first time in her career. Alexis Perry and Lexey Kneib are replacing All-American third baseman MJ Knighten NCAA TEAMS HIGHLIGHT SCHEDULE Nebraska is slated to play 16 of its 56 games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams (27 percent). NU will face 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago (Arizona State, Utah, BYU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Minnesota and Wisconsin). This includes four teams that advanced to the 2017 Women s College World Series - Washington, UCLA, Texas A&M and defending national champion Oklahoma. REVELLE RECORDS WIN 950 AT NU On March 9, Nebraska beat Green Bay and Northern Iowa in Lawrence, Kan., at the Jayhawk Invitational. The team earned its 12th and 13th win of the season, but the victories also marked a milestone for Head Coach Rhonda Revelle, as she won her 949th and 950th game as the head coach of Nebraska. FERRELL MAKES HISTORY Olivia Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she kicked off the season against No. 19 BYU on Feb. 9. She also became the first Husker freshman to pitch and bat in a season opener. NEBRASKA NICE The 2018 Husker roster includes eight native Nebraskans, which ties for the most in Rhonda Revelle s 26 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. 3 HUSKERS ALL HANDS ON DECK Nebraska s 20-person roster has been utilized to the fullest extent so far this season. Through 50 games, every healthy player has seen the field. Nebraska has used several different lineups and batting orders in all of its games. Additionally, seven different positions have seen a player make her first-career start. Also, Sarah Yocom got her first-career at bat against Wichita State on March 4, which means that every healthy Husker hitter has made at least one plate appearance this season. Yocom also played on defense for the first time in her career, coming in the game to play second base. She made her first start (third base) at the Easton Invitational. She had appeared previously, but only as a pinch runner. Additionally, all but one of the Husker hitters have recorded at least one hit this season. HUSKER HOME RUNS Nebraska ranks sixth in the Big Ten, with 38 home runs this season. Individually, Tristen Edwards is tied for fifth in the conference with 11, while Jablonski is tied for seventh in the conference with 10. Edwards and Kaylan Jablonski are quite the pair when it comes to home runs this season. The two combine for 21 already, and become the 12th pair to have 20 homers in a single season. Urness started at DP on April 27 - just hours after being cleared for competition by Nebraska s medical staff. In her first at bat, she doubled on the first pitch to score Nebraska s first and only run of the game. She also earned the start at DP on April 29. NEBRASKA NOTES EDWARDS LOOKING TO GET BACK ON TRACK Prior to the Minnesota series, sophomore infielder Tristen Edwards ranked second in the Big Ten with a.500 batting average in conference-only game. Since then though, she s gone 1-for15, which includes a five-game hitless streak. She hasn t had a hit since April 20 and the Huskers are hoping Edwards gets back on track. However, despite not having a hit in the last five games, Edwards still leads the team with a.358 batting average and a.642 slugging percentage. In conference games, she s batting.373 and slugging.706. Additionally, she also ranks first on the team in home runs (11) and RBIs (41). She s had at least one hit in all but 12 games this season and she s had 17 multi-hit games this season. In game one against Purdue, Edwards recorded the first four-hit game of her career. She becomes the second Husker this season (Alyvia Simmons) to get four or more hits in one game and the four hits are tied for fourth in school history. She also is one of just 13 players in Nebraska history to have at least 10 doubles and 10 homers in the same year, after picking up her 10th double in game two against Purdue on April 13. She entered the 2018 season as the only Husker pitcher to have significant experience in the circle and was expected to be a leader for the pitching staff. The Omaha, Neb., native has embraced the role. Jablonski has the save or win in 27 of the Huskers 30 wins this season. Additionally, her six saves lead the Big Ten and are ranked fifth in the nation. She has 21 wins this season, which included 11 straight. Her 21 wins are a career high and currently are tied for fourth in the nation and rank second in the conference. In her first two seasons, she recorded eight wins and last season she had 11. At the plate, Jablonski ranks second on the team among the starters with a batting average of.335 and a slugging percentage of.573. She ranks second on the team with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. She ranks third in doubles (seven). Her 55 lead the team and rank ninth in the Big Ten. Her 10 homers are tied for seventh in the Big Ten. Additionally, on March 17, Jablonski hit three home runs against Cal State Fullerton to tie a Nebraska single-game record, as well as a Big Ten record. Jablonski also pitched a complete seven-inning game against Fullerton, becoming the first player in NCAA history to hit three home runs and pick up the win in the circle in the same game. Jablonski s was the first pitcher to reach 17 wins this season. She is one of two pitchers in the country to rank in the top 10 in wins and saves. Of the other eight pitchers in the top 10 in saves, not one ranks in the top 50 in wins. PITCHING STAFF SAVES THE DAY The pitching staff wrote its way into the record books in game two against Iowa when Kaylan Jablonski picked up the ninth save of the season against on April 10 to take over third place in the team season saves records. Addtionally, the nine saves lead the Big Ten. NU TEAM SEASON SAVES RECORD Individually, Kaylan Jablonski has recorded six saves, while Olivia Ferrell has two. Jablonski currently is tied for second in the individual season saves record books and the all-time record book. She also leads the conference and is tied for second in the country. Ferrell needs one more save to tie for the freshman record and two more to break the record. Ferrell ranks third in the conference. NU INDIVIDUAL SEASON SAVES RECORD 1. HUSKERS ENJOYING OTTE S RETURN In game two of the Iowa doubleheader, Taylor Otte hit a double to snap a nine-game hitless streak. With a struggling offense, Nebraska would benefit from Otte finding her offensive rhythm again. Through the first 15 games of the season, Otte was batting.273. She had 12 hits, nine runs, three doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Otte s been providing the offense with a little spark as of lately. In the last nine games, Otte s batting.320, with two runs, two doubles and two RBIs. Otte also had two hits, including a double, one run and one RBI in the three-game Wisconsin series and was one of just five Huskers to get more than one hit on the weekend. WEEKLY NOTES

4 2018 NEBRASKA SOFTBALL SIMMONS MOVED TO LEADOFF Alyvia Simmons moved to leadoff at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic to fill in for Taylor Otte, who was injured at the time, and she has found her spot in the batting order. Simmons stats have significanly improved since her move. On March 14, in game two of the South Dakota State doubleheader, Simmons recorded her 100th-career hit. Additionally, Simmons has been even more impressive the past few weeks. Against Michigan State, Simmons led the team over the weekend with a.667 batting average. She had six runs, six hits, two doubles and a team-high seven RBIs. On March 24, she had four hits and a career-best five RBIs against the Spartans. Her four hits also are tied for fourth in school history. In the mid-week game against South Dakota, Simmons went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, one walk and one stolen base. In the Northwestern series, Simmons went 5-for-10 with three runs, three doubles and one RBI. Against Indiana, Simmons went 3-for-8, with two runs, one double, two RBIs and four walks. In the Purdue doubleheader, Simmons had two hits, three runs, four RBIs and one triple. In the Minnesota series, Simmons was one of five Huskers to have multiple hits on the weekend. She finished with two hits, including a triple. It was her fourth of the season, which is tied for 10th on Nebraska s all-time list. NEBRASKA S TRIPLES SEASON RECORD 1. The Huskers have almost a completely different infield from last year, that at times includes five first-years at respective positions, but only have 40 errors through 50 games. Nebraska has the potential to be even better though. However, the Huskers will have to clean things up to get back to where they were earlier this season. In non-conference, Nebraska was fielding.982, but the team has struggled lately, as they are fielding just.955 in Big Ten play, which ranks 10th. They have 24 errors through 19 conference games. Three Huskers have made starts at third this season, including sophomores Lexey Kneib and Alexis Perry, and freshman Sarah Yocom. Yocom was thrown into the mix at the Easton Invitational as she made two starts at the position. Kneib has seen the most starts, with 38, while Perry has made nine. The deciding factor could have more to do with offense than defense though, as all three have played well at third when they ve had the opportunity. The Huskers could use another consistent hitter in the lineup. If one of the three third baseman can step it up at the plate, it s possible they will get more starts in the lineup. 7 OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT ILLINOIS (34-16, 11-7 BIG TEN) Illinois enters the series with a record, which includes an 11-7 record in conference play. With just weekend left in the regular season, Illinois has a lot to play for. The Illini are currently sitting in sixth place in the Big Ten standings, but are just 1.5 games out of fourth place, which would give them a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament next weekend. A good performance this weekend against Nebraska and losses from higher-ranked teams could set the Illini up for a good position in the tournament. Additionally, her 44 RBIs rank fourth, while her eight triples, 115 total bases, 51 runs scored and 75 hits all rank first in the Big Ten. Oestreich has pitched a teamhigh 7 complete games and two shutouts. She also has a team-best 94 strikeouts on the year. As a team, Illinois is fielding.952 and has 72 errors through 50 games. The team has given up 50 unearned runs this season.
