1 NEBR SKA SOFTBALL WEEKLY NOTES ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE FEB RALEIGH, N.C. 06 NC STATE FEB :30 A.M. CT The Nebraska softball team (3-2) travels to Raleigh, N.C., this weekend for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, hosted by NC State. Wisconsin will also represent the Big Ten Conference at the site, while Pittsburgh will be the other ACC school at the site. Due to projected weather this weekend s schedule has been adjusted. Nebraska will now play twice on Friday, starting with a game against NC State at 11:30 a.m. (CT) and then a meeting with Pitt at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday the Huskers will now play once, battling NC State at 1:30 p.m. The Huskers conclude the weekend on Sunday against Pitt at 9 a.m. At last year s challenge, Nebraska and Indiana represented the Big Ten at in Atlanta, Ga., along with Boston College and Georgia Tech. The Huskers went 3-1 that weekend, beating Georgia Tech twice (6-5, 7-3) and going 1-1 against Boston College. The Huskers won the first game of the weekend, 2-1, while Boston College defeated NU on the final day, 3-0. LAST TIME OUT NU went 3-2 at the Lone Star Classic in Houston, Texas, last weekend. The Huskers beat Lamar twice and UNO once and fell twice to Texas Tech. Senior Catcher Bri Cassidy led the Huskers at the plate over the weekend hitting 07 PITTSBURGH FEB. 15 4:30 P.M. CT 08 NC STATE FEB. 16 1:30 P.M. CT.563. Bree Boruff and Rylie Unzicker also had good weekends offensively, batting.438 and.385 respectively. A LOOK AT THE OTHER TEAMS NC State enters the weekend with a 3-2 record after an impressive showing at the USF Opening Weekend Tournament. The weekend was highlighted by a 4-1 win over No. 7 Arizona. NC State also beat Illinois state and South Florida. The Wolfpack lost to No. 19 Michigan and No. 5 Florida by just one run. The Wolfpack earned the No. 23 ranking in the Softball America s first regular-season poll moving into the top 25 for the first time since Jan. 26, Pittsburgh went 1-4 last weekend at the Cougar Classic, falling to Purdue, the College of Charleston, Central Michigan and Wichita State. The Panthers beat Wichita in the teams second meeting over the weekend. Wisconsin also opened its season at the Lone Star College Classic last weekend, however Nebraska and Wisconsin never played. Wisconsin went 4-1 over the weekend, with its lone loss coming to Texas Tech. The Badgers beat UNO and Lamar twice. 09 PITTSBURGH FEB A.M. NU TRAVELS TO 10 STATES IN 2019 Nebraska will travel to 10 states this season, playing games in California, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. HUSKERS SET FOR A PAIR OF GAMES AGAINST 2018 WCWS TEAMS Nebraska is slated to play two of the eight teams that advanced to the Women's College World Series last season, Arizona State and UCLA. The Huskers will see both teams at the Mary Nutter Classic. Additionally, Nebraska will play nine more teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 when the team takes on BYU, Texas A&M, Wichita State, Tulsa, Michigan, Drake, Northwestern, Minnesota and Wisconsin. HOME SWEET HOME Nebraska hosts an 11-game homestand in April and 2019 is the third straight year the Huskers have played at least 10 home games in one month. NU PLAYS NINE GAMES IN 10 DAYS The Huskers' stamina will be tested in 2019 as they are set to play a stretch of nine games in 10 days from April 19 to April 28. INDIANA HOSTS BIG TEN TOURNAMENT The 2019 Big Ten Tournament is set for May 9-11 at Indiana's Andy Mohr Field. The top 12 teams in the final regular-season standings will compete in the tournament, with the top four seeds earning a bye. POSTSEASON FORMAT UNCHANGED The NCAA Tournament will feature a 64-team field for the 17th consecutive season in 2019 and will include a regional-super regional format for the 15th straight year, with super regionals lasting three days. 5 SEASON NOTEBOOK ALL-BIG TEN DUO RETURNS Senior Alyvia Simmons and junior Tristen Edwards return in 2019 as all-big Ten picks. Simmons was named a second-team pick for the ALYVIA SIMMONS second consecutive season in 2018, after also earning the honor in 2017 as a sophomore. Simmons started all but two games for the Huskers in 2018 and hit.346, which ranked second on the team. Edwards was one of nine Big Ten players to earn unanimous first-team honors in She became the first Husker to earn first-team conference honors since All-Americans Kiki Stokes and MJ Knighten in Edwards led the team with a.356 batting average, while starting all 54 games at shortstop, despite never playing the position prior to the beginning of the 2018 season. HUSKERS ADD PACIFIC TRANSFER During the offseason, Nebraska added junior infield Samantha Owen to its roster. Owen spent two seasons at Pacific before coming to Nebraska. Owen started 96 games for the Tigers over two seasons, appearing in all but four games. She batted.308 with 11 home runs, 53 RBIs and 46 runs in two seasons with the Tigers. She also earned first-team All-WCC honors in 2018 and was an honorable-mention selection in ALL-REGION PICKS HIGHLIGHT ROSTER With addition of Samantha Owen, the Huskers return two All-Region picks in 2019, including Owen and senior Alyvia Simmons. Owen earned third-team All-West Region honors in 2018 at Pacific. Simmons earned thirdteam All-Midwest Region honors in 2018 for the second consecutive year, after also earning third-team recognition in 2017 as a sophomore. BIG BATTERS BACK IN 2019 Nebraska returns its top two offensive leaders from 2018 in junior Tristen Edwards and senior Alyvia Simmons. Edwards led the team in nearly every offensive category last season including batting average (.356), runs scored (41), hits (57), home runs (12), RBIs (43) and slugging percentage (.650). She also ranked second on the team with 11 doubles and 23 walks. Simmons led the team with 12 doubles and four triples, while batting.346 which ranked second on the team in She scored 34 runs, stole a team-high 14 bases, hit two homers and drove in 24 runs. Sophomore Ally Riley also had an impressive 2018 season on offense. She batted.317 (20- for-63), which ranked third on the team among regular hitters and fourth overall. Riley also scored three runs, hit four doubles and had 14 RBIs as a freshman. Right-handed pitcher Olivia Ferrell went 7-for-21 (.333) in 2018 with two doubles and four RBIs. FERRELL BACK IN THE CIRCLE Olivia Ferrell returns the season as Nebraska s most experienced pitcher. As a freshman last season, Ferrell appeared in 31 games, making 20 starts. She finished with a record of 9-8 and an ERA of 4.35, which ranked second on the team. She pitched three complete games and was part of three shutouts. She pitched innings, gave up 68 earned runs and recorded 53 strikeouts. Last season, Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she kicked off the season against No. 19 BYU. She ll help lead a pitching staff with just one other returner and three freshmen. NEBRASKA NICE The 2019 Husker roster includes nine native Nebraskans, which is the most in Rhonda Revelle s 27 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. Previously, Nebraska had never had more than eight Nebraskans on its roster under Revelle. The group consists of senior Madi Unzicker, sophomores Olivia Ferrell, Rylie Unzicker and Sarah Yocom and freshmen Payton Huscroft, Carson Fischer, Peyton Glatter, Karlee Seevers and Courtney Wallace. IT S IN THE CLUB Several Huskers have been teammates long before arriving in Lincoln, playing together in high school and on the same club team. California natives Bri Cassidy and Tristen Edwards played for the Corona Angels. In Nebraska, Madi Unzicker, Alyvia Simmons, Rylie Unzicker, Payton Huscroft, Olivia Ferrell, Carson Fischer, Peyton Glatter and Courtney Wallace all played for Nebraska Gold. SUPPORT STAFF GETS NEW LOOK Head Coach Rhonda Revelle added two former All-Americans and current professional players to her support staff in the offseason. Former Husker and USA World Championship Team member Taylor Edwards is Nebraska s volunteer coach, while USA Softball s Japan All- Star Series Team member and former Oregon Duck standout Jenna Lilley joins former Wichita State pitcher Katie Malone as a graduate manager. BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK HUSCROFT READY IN 2019 Payton Huscroft is expected to be compete for playing time this season after an injury forced her to redshirt in her first season at Nebraska. Huscroft never saw the field in 2018 and has four years of eligibility remaining. LET S HEAR IT FOR THE NEW KIDS The 2019 Nebraska roster consists of eight new faces, including junior Pacific transfer Samantha Owen and freshmen Carson Fischer, Mikaela Forcum, Peyton Glatter, Anni Raley, Karlee Seevers, Courtney Wallace and Lindsey Walljasper. Despite being new, the group brings a lot of previous success that hopes to translate here at Nebraska. Additionally, freshman right-handed pitcher/designated player Courtney Wallace hit a pair of triples, which also tied a Nebraska single-game record. 6 NEBRASKA NOTES ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE HISTORY The ACC/Big Ten Challenge is in its fourth year as a partnership between the two conferences. The challenge includes five sites with two ACC and two Big Ten teams at each site playing each team from the opposing conference twice. The sites and matchup for the 2019 ACC/ Big Ten Challenge include: Chapel Hill, N.C. (Louisville and North Carolina; Northwestern and Michigan), Raleigh, N.C. (N.C. State and Pittsburgh; Nebraska and Wisconsin), Atlanta, Ga. (Boston College and Georgia Tech; Illinois and Michigan State), Durham, N.C. (Duke and Syracuse; Indiana and Penn State). The ACC won the 2018 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Last season, Nebraska and Indiana represented the Big Ten at in Atlanta, Ga., along with Boston College and Georgia Tech. The Huskers went 3-1 that weekend, beating Georgia Tech twice (6-5, 7-3) and going 1-1 against Boston College. The Huskers won the first game of the weekend, 2-1, while Boston College defeated NU on the final day, 3-0. HUSKER HOME RUNS Nebraska has four home runs through five games this season. The 0.80 average ranks sixth in the conference. The 3.40 average per game leads the nation. Additionally, the Huskers are averaging 1.00 double play per game, which leads the conference and ranks fourth in the country. CATCHING FIRE Senior catcher Bri Cassidy was impressive in the Huskers opening weekend at the Lone Star College Classic. Cassidy led the team going 9-for-16 (.563) with three runs, five doubles and four RBIs. She also slugged.875. In the season opener, Cassidy had three doubles alone, which tied a Nebraska single-game record. CASSIDY STAT COMPARISON YEAR AVG. R H 2B RBI Additionally, Cassidy moved up two spots in the batting lineup over the first five games. She started the season in the eight spot and moved up to sixth by the final game of the opening weekend. In the conference rankings, Cassidy ranks first in hitting, doubles and hits. Nationally, she ranks second in doubles and 58th in hitting. BORUFF PROVIDES OFFENSIVE SPARK Prior to the season, junior outfielder Bree Boruff had one career hit. However, during the opening weekend, Boruff recorded seven hits, with three runs and two RBIs. She moved from ninth in the order all the way up to second by the end of the weekend. She currently ranks second on the team in hitting with.438. In the season opener, she recorded her firstcareer double, her first-career RBIs and her firstcareer multi-hit game, going 3-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. BORUFF STAT COMPARISON YEAR AVG. R H 2B RBI RYLIE UNZICKER FINDING HER GROOVE Sophomore Rylie Unzicker stepped up for the Huskers in a big way at the Lone Star College Classic. The Omaha, Neb., native ranked third on the team in hitting with.385 last weekend. In the final game against UNO, Unzicker went 2-for- 2 with one run, one homer, one double, one RBI and two walks, marking her first-career multi-hit game and recording her first-career home run against UNO. She also hit her first-career triple in the season opener against Lamar. Unzicker also slugged.923 over the weekend which leads the team. RYLIE UNZICKER STAT COMPARISON YEAR AVG. R H 2B HR RBI NEWBIES MAKE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT Several newcomers aren t wasting any time making an impact on the team. Freshmen Lindsey Walljasper, Courtney Wallace, Carson Fischer, Petyon Glatter and Anni Raley all saw action in their first weekend with the Huskers. Fischer and Raley each scored two runs for Nebraska, while Glatter made one plate appearance as a pinch hitter. Walljasper and Wallace each started all five games and helped the team both on offense and on defense. LINDSEY WALLJASPER Lindsey Walljapser made an impact at the plate and in the circle for the Huskers. The Manteca, Calif., native started in the circle in the season opener, becoming just the third freshman to start a season opener since In that game, Walljasper pitched a complete five-inning game. She gave up no earned runs, seven hits and recorded eight strikeouts, while not giving up a single walk. At the plate, she went 2-for-4 with one run and four RBIs. She also recorded her first-career home run in the season opener. Overall, Walljasper went 6-for-19 at the plate with two runs, two doubles, one homer and a team-high seven RBIs over the weekend. In the circle, she went 1-0, making three appearances including two starts. She pitched a team-high 11.0 innings and finished the weekend with an ERA of 2.55, which ranked second on the team. COURTNEY WALLACE Courtney Wallace provides another double threat for Nebraska. At the Lone Star College Classic, Wallace started all five games, including once in the circle. She picked up her first-career win in the final game of the weekend against UNO. Overall, she pitched 6.0 innings and made two appearances. She finished the weekend with six strikeouts. At the plate, Wallace went 6-for-16 (.375), which ranked fourth on the team. She had scored four runs and drove in two more. She also had two doubles and in the season opener, she hit two triples, which tied a Nebraska singlegame record. Wallace s two triples rank first in the conference and third in the nation. MERGELE MAGIC Senior right-handed pitcher Regan Mergele has just two losses since March 3, 2016, dating back to her junior college days at Butler Community College. She is 50-2 in that stretch. Additionally, in the opening weekend, Mergele earned her REGAN MERGELE first-two career saves against Lamar (game two) and Omaha. She also recorded a career-best six strikeouts in Nebraska s first game against Texas Tech at the Lone Star College Classic. Over the weekend, Mergele pitched 10.0 innings, which was the second-most among Husker pitchers. She recorded a team-high 16 strikeouts and finished the weekend with a teamlow 2.10 ERA. Her 16 strikeouts rank seventh in the conference and 41st nationally. HUSKERS GETTING ON BASE Three Huskers have reached base every game so far this season. 9 OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORTS NC STATE (3-2) PITTSBURGH (1-4) NC State enters the weekend with a 3-2 record after an impressive showing at the USF Opening Weekend Tournament. The weekend was highlighted by a 4-1 win over No. 7 Arizona. NC State also beat Illinois state and South Florida. The Wolfpack lost to No. 19 Michigan and No. 5 Florida by just one run. The Wolfpack earned the No. 23 ranking in the Softball America s first regular-season poll moving into the top 25 for the first time since Jan. 26, NC State is also receiving votes in the NFCA and USA Today Polls. Angie Rizzi led NC State last weekend going 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate with two runs, one double, one home run and three RBIs. Randi Farricker ranks second on the team, hitting.364 with one run, one double, one triple, one homer and two RBIs. As a team, the Wolfpack hit eight home runs last weekend, while allowing just two from its opponents. In the circle, Deven Wallace paved the way going 2-0 last weekend with an ERA of She made four appearances including three starts. She pitched one complete game and had 11 strikeouts.
