2 SEASON NOTEBOOK DUO RETURNS AS ALL-REGION, ALL-BIG TEN PICKS Senior Kaylan Jablonski and junior Alyvia Simmons return in 2018 as all-region picks and all-conference honorees. Both Jablonski and Simmons earned third-team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors and second-team all-big Ten accolades in Jablonski was a star both on offense and defense for the Huskers last season. She batted.263 in 43 games and had 31 hits, with 12 doubles and five homers. She totaled 29 RBIs and finished the season with a slugging percentage of the highest of her career. In the circle, Jablonski appeared in 40 games and pitched 10 complete games. She claimed 11 wins and finished with a career-low 4.31 ERA. Simmons was explosive on offense, batting.333 and slugging.513 in both which were career highs. She had 50 hits, almost doubling her count from On defense, she started 44 games and was the only Husker to start at least one game at all three outfield spots. HUSKERS ADD JUCO STANDOUT Following last season the Huskers added right-handed pitcher Regan Mergele to their roster. Mergele comes from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., where she helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships in 2016 and Mergele was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year and the NJCAA Division I Championship s Most Outstanding Pitcher in Mergele finished her two-year junior college career with a 1.07 ERA and an overall record of Additionally, she claimed All-America honors twice from both the NJCAA and the NFCA. Mergele will have two years of eligibility with the Huskers and is active for the 2018 season. MARCH MADNESS The Huskers play a total of 23 games in March, including eight games in six days (March 9-14) and 13 games in 10 days (March 9-18). NEBRASKA NICE The 2018 Husker roster includes eight native Nebraskans, which ties for the most in Rhonda Revelle s 26 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. Half of the group is in the freshman class and another three are seniors. IT S IN THE CLUB Several Huskers have been teammates long before arriving in Lincoln, playing together in high school and on the same club team. California natives Austen Urness, Bri Cassidy and Tristen Edwards played for the Corona Angels. In Nebraska, Gina Metzler, Kaylan Jablonski, Madi Unzicker, Alyvia Simmons, Rylie Unaicker, Payton Huscroft and Olivia Ferrell all played for Nebraska Gold. UNZICKER BACK ON THE FIELD The Huskers will enjoy the return of junior infielder Madi Unzicker, who missed all of the 2017 season after having knee surgery prior to the start of the season. Unzicker will no longer catch for the Huskers but will be Nebraska s primary first baseman this season. Prior to her injury, Unzicker batted.217 in 2016 and had 20 hits, seven doubles, five homers and 15 RBIs. URNESS OUT FOR SEASON Senior Austen Urness will not compete this season after undergoing season-ending knee surgery last fall. INFIELD GETS NEW LOOK Nebraska s infield looks much different from last season as only two of the five regular starters from last year return to the same positions. Bri Cassidy (catcher) and Laura Barrow (second base) return. Madi Unzicker - who didn t play last season due to injury - will takeover at first. Tristen Edwards will play shortstop for the first time in her career. Alexis Perry and Lexey Kneib are replacing All-American third baseman MJ Knighten NCAA TEAMS HIGHLIGHT SCHEDULE Nebraska is slated to play 16 of its 56 games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams (27 percent). NU will face 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago (Arizona State, Utah, BYU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Minnesota and Wisconsin). This includes four teams that advanced to the 2017 Women s College World Series - Washington, UCLA, Texas A&M and defending national champion Oklahoma. NEWCOMERS IN 2018 With the addition of five freshmen and junior college transfer Regan Mergele, almost onethird of the 2018 roster consists of new faces. FERRELL MAKES HISTORY Olivia Ferrell became the first Husker freshman pitcher to start a season opener against a ranked opponent when she kicked off the season against No. 19 BYU on Feb. 9. She also became the first Husker freshman to pitch and bat in a season opener. NEBRASKA NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name B/T Pos. Ht. Yr. 3 HUSKER HISTORY AT MARY NUTTER Nebraska is competing in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic for the eighth straight season and the ninth time overall. Nebraska owns a record at the tournament. Nebraska is 7-15 all-time vs. ranked teams at the event. Nebraska has defeated one ranked team in each of the last seven years at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Thirteen of Nebraska s last 15 losses at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic have come to a ranked team. HOT HITTING HUSKERS As a team, Nebraska s.277 batting average ranks second in the Big Ten Conference and ranks 46th overall nationally. The Huskers also rank second in the conference slugging percentage with a.447 average, moving up two spots since last week. The Huskers rank 67th nationally in the category. Individually, Tristen Edwards ranks second in the conference with a batting average of.455. Additionally, she ranks first in the Big Ten with 15 hits and 30th nationally. Kaylan Jablonski and Taylor Otte both have 13 hits on the season, which ranks third in the conference. Edwards also ranks fourth in the conference in RBIs per game, fourth in the conference in slugging percentage (.727) and second in total bases (24). Jablonski and Otte rank third and fifth, in the conference in total bases with 22 and 21, respectively. KJ LEADS IN THE CIRCLE Kaylan Jablonski comes back in 2018 as the Huskers top returning pitcher and she s already proving why. Jablonski has had the win or the save in seven of Nebraska s 10 games so far this season. Additionally, her four wins are more than eight Big Ten teams have this season and rank first in the Big Ten. Jablonski s three saves rank first in the conference and second nationally. ALL HANDS ON DECK Nebraska s 20-person roster has been utilized to the fullest extent so far this season. Through 10 games, every healthy player has seen the field. Nebraska has used a different starting lineup and a different batting order in all 10 games. Additionally, six different positions have seen a player make her first career start. EDWARDS EARNS B1G HONOR Sophomore Tristen Edwards has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week both weeks of the season. She earned the honor outright on Feb. 19 for her performance at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and shared the award on Feb. 12. Edwards became the first Husker to be named conference player of the week twice in the same season since 2012 (Brook Thomason) and the third Husker ever to win the award back-to-back weeks (Lisa Wangler, 2003, Big 12 and Ruth Chatwin, 1989, Big Eight). NEBRASKA NOTES RECORD WATCH After throwing her first complete game nohitter in 2016, Kaylan Jablonski wrote her way into the Nebraska record book. She is currently tied for 10th in the category. Another complete game no-hitter this season would tie her for sixth, while a total of three would tie her for second place. Former Husker All-American and current Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel owns the record with six. COMPLETE GAME NO-HITTERS PITCHED 1. Austen Urness (Lake Elsinore, Calif.), Tristen Edwards (Murrieta, Calif.), Bri Cassidy (San Bernardino, Calif.) all hail from the Golden State. In fact, the trio all played for the same club team in high school, as well (Corona Angels). EDWARDS GETS ON BASE Sophomore infielder/outfielder Tristen Edwards has reached base all 10 games this season, which included a nine-game hitting streak - the longest of her career. Her on-base streak is currently at 13, as she reached base the last three games of the 2017 season as well. OTTE FOUND HER SPOT The Husker batting order is still in the making. Nebraska had six different lineups in the opening weekend. In the second weekend, the top half of the order remained the same, but the bottom half is still in the works. Senior outfielder Taylor Otte is the only player to start in the same spot all 10 games Otte is Nebraska s leadoff hitter. She ranks third on the team in batting average with a.343. She also has two doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Tristen Edwards, Madi Unzicker, Kaylan Jablonski and Alyvia Simmons make up the rest of the first five in the batting order. However, the remaining four sports are still up for grabs and have been filled at least once by eight different Huskers (Rylie Unzicker, Bri Cassidy, Gina Metzler, Lexey Kneib, Alexis Perry, Laura Barrow, Olivia Ferrell and Bree Boruff).
