Bowlin Stadium HUSKERS HOST SOUTH DAKOTA The Nebraska softball team (23-10) welcomes South Dakota (13-20) on Tuesday for a mid-week game at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be available on Huskers.com (radio) and BTNPlus/FloSoftball (subscription required). The Huskers opened Big Ten play with a three-game home series against Michigan State last weekend. The Huskers went 2-1 against the Spartans and are currently tied for third in the conference. Kaylan Jablonski picked up both wins against MSU. On offense, Alyvia Simmons went 6-for-9 over the weekend, with two doubles and seven RBIs. Laura Barrow went 5-for-9, with four runs, two doubles and three RBIs. Tristen Edwards hit 4-for-8, with two runs and five RBIs. Barrow and Edwards each had one homer for the Huskers as well over the weekend. South Dakota comes to Lincoln with a overall record, which includes a 3-0 record in the Summit League. Additionally, the Coyotes have won five of their last six matchups. Most recently, South Dakota swept UNO in a three-game series March 22-23, with a doubleheader on March 22. The Coyotes outscored the Mavericks in the three-game series. Taylor Steinfeldt leads the Coyotes at the plate. She s batting.352 and slugging.692. She has 32 hits, nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 18 RBIs. Jessica Rodgers is also helping out at the plate, batting.349 and slugging.686. She has a team high eight home runs and a team best 28 RBIs. In the circle, South Dakota has mostly rotated between Dustie Durham and Sarah Lisko. Durham has a 8-7 record and has pitched 81.0 innings. She s made 20 appearances, including 15 starts. She s pitched six complete games, and has two solo shutouts and two saves. She also has a team-high 53 strikeouts and an ERA of Lisko has a 5-6 record and has made 11 starts. She s pitched 66.1 innings, including three complete games. 2 SEASON NOTEBOOK DUO RETURNS AS ALL-REGION, ALL-BIG TEN PICKS Senior Kaylan Jablonski and junior Alyvia Simmons return in 2018 as all-region picks and all-conference honorees. Both Jablonski and Simmons earned third-team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors and second-team all-big Ten accolades in Jablonski was a star both on offense and defense for the Huskers last season. She batted.263 in 43 games and had 31 hits, with 12 doubles and five homers. She totaled 29 RBIs and finished the season with a slugging percentage of the highest of her career. In the circle, Jablonski appeared in 40 games and pitched 10 complete games. She claimed 11 wins and finished with a career-low 4.31 ERA. Simmons was explosive on offense, batting.333 and slugging.513 in both which were career highs. She had 50 hits, almost doubling her count from On defense, she started 44 games and was the only Husker to start at least one game at all three outfield spots. HUSKERS ADD JUCO STANDOUT Prior to the season the Huskers added righthanded pitcher Regan Mergele to their roster. Mergele comes from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., where she helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships in 2016 and Mergele was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year and the NJCAA Division I Championship s Most Outstanding Pitcher in Mergele finished her two-year junior college career with a 1.07 ERA and an overall record of Additionally, she claimed All-America honors twice from both the NJCAA and the NFCA. Mergele will have two years of eligibility with the Huskers and is active for the 2018 season. NEBRASKA NICE The 2018 Husker roster includes eight native Nebraskans, which ties for the most in Rhonda Revelle s 26 seasons as Nebraska s head coach. Half of the group is in the freshman class and another three are seniors. UNZICKER BACK ON THE FIELD The Huskers are enjoying the return of junior infielder Madi Unzicker, who missed all of the 2017 season after having knee surgery prior to the start of the season. Unzicker has started every game this season. She s batting.215 this season, with 14 hits, three doubles, one triple, three homers and 11 RBIs. URNESS OUT FOR SEASON Senior Austen Urness will not compete this season after undergoing season-ending knee surgery last fall. INFIELD GETS NEW LOOK Nebraska s infield looks much different from last season as only two of the five regular starters from last year return to the same positions. Bri Cassidy (catcher) and Laura Barrow (second base) return. Madi Unzicker - who didn t play last season due to injury - will takeover at first. Tristen Edwards will play shortstop for the first time in her career. Alexis Perry and Lexey Kneib are replacing All-American third baseman MJ Knighten NCAA TEAMS HIGHLIGHT SCHEDULE Nebraska is slated to play 16 of its 56 games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams (27 percent). NU will face 12 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago (Arizona State, Utah, BYU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, DePaul, Minnesota and Wisconsin). This includes four teams that advanced to the 2017 Women s College World Series - Washington, UCLA, Texas A&M and defending national champion Oklahoma. MARCH MADNESS The Huskers play a total of 22 games in March, including seven games in six days (March 9-14) and 12 games in 10 days (March 9-18). 3 HUSKERS ALL HANDS ON DECK Nebraska s 20-person roster has been utilized to the fullest extent so far this season. Through 33 games, every healthy player has seen the field. Nebraska has used several different lineups and batting orders in all of its games. Additionally, seven different positions have seen a player make her first-career start. Also, Sarah Yocom got her first-career at bat against Wichita State on March 4, which means that every healthy Husker hitter has made at least one plate appearance this season. Yocom also played on defense for the first time in her career, coming in the game to play second base. She made her first start (third base) at the Easton Invitational. She had appeared previously, but only as a pinch runner. Additionally, all but one of the Husker hitters have recorded at least one hit this season. REVELLE COACHES 1,500TH GAME Head coach Rhonda Revelle coached her 1,500th career game on Friday, March 16 against Grand Canyon. This includes 26 seasons at Nebraska and one season (1987) at Nebraska Wesleyan. REVELLE RECORDS WIN 950 AT NU On March 9, Nebraska beat Green Bay and Northern Iowa in Lawrence, Kan., at the Jayhawk Invitational. The team earned its 12th and 13th win of the season, but the victories also marked a milestone for Head Coach Rhonda Revelle, as she won her 949th and 950th game as the head coach of Nebraska. HUSKER HOME RUNS Nebraska ranks third in the Big Ten, averaging 0.79 homeruns per game and 57th in the country. She entered the 2018 season as the only Husker pitcher to have significant experience in the circle and was expected to be a leader for the pitching staff. The Omaha, Neb., native has embraced the role. Jablonski has the save or win in 19 of the Huskers 23 wins this season. Additionally, her four saves lead the Big Ten. She has 16 wins this season, which included 11 straight. Her 16 wins are a new season best. Her first two seasons she recorded eight wins and last season she had 11. Her six losses also are tied for lowest in the Big Ten. At the plate, Jablonski ranks second one the team with a batting average of.349 and ranks second on the team with a slugging percentage of.606. She also is tied for first on the team with one triple and seven home runs. She ranks third in doubles (five) and second in RBIs (18). Her 38 hits rank fifth in the Big Ten and her seven homers are ranked fourth. Additionally, on March 17, Jablonski hit three home runs against Cal State Fullerton to tie a Nebraska single-game record, as well as a Big Ten record. Jablonski also pitched a complete seven-inning game against Fullerton, becoming the first player in NCAA history to hit three home runs and pick up the win in the circle in the same game. Jablonski s 16 wins are tied for first in the country. The four other pitcher s she s tied with haven t even recorded a hit this season. Additionally, her four saves are tied for fifth in the country. She is the only pitcher in the country to rank in the top five in wins and saves. Jablonski also has seven homers, also a career best, and ranks in the top 50 nationally in that category as well. HOT HITTING EDWARDS Sophomore infielder Tristen Edwards has been a terror at the plate for opposing teams this season. She leads the starters with a.362 batting average and a.638 slugging percentage. She also ranks first on the team with home runs (seven), doubles (eight) and RBIs (27). She s had at least one hit in all but nine games this season and she s had 12 multi-hit games this season. She also ranks fourth in the conference in multi-base hits. She ranks eighth in the conference in total bases and ranks fifth in hits and seventh in slugging percentage. EDWARDS EARNS B1G HONOR Sophomore Tristen Edwards became the first Husker to be named conference player of the week twice in the same season since 2012 (Brook Thomason) and the third Husker ever to win the award back-to-back weeks (Lisa Wangler, 2003, Big 12 and Ruth Chatwin, 1989, Big Eight). Edwards earned Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19. PITCHING STAFF SAVES THE DAY The pitching staff wrote its way into the record books last weekend when Sydney McLeod picked up the seventh save of the season against Michigan State on March 23. Addtionally, the seven saves lead the Big Ten. NU TEAM SEASON SAVES RECORD Individually, Kaylan Jablonski has recorded four saves, while Olivia Ferrell has two. Jablonski currently is tied for ninth in school history and is tied for third in the senior record book. She also leads the conference and ranks fifth in the country. 4 2018 NEBRASKA SOFTBALL MINIMIZING ERRORS The Huskers fielding percentage is at an all-time high so far this season at.975. If Nebraska continues this pace, it would set the school record for fielding percentage, as the current record is.973. Despite having almost a completely different infield from last year, that at times includes five first-years at respective positions, the Huskers have just 23 errors through 30 games. Addtionally, the Huskers rank second in the conference in fielding percentage. ALLY RILEY MAKING NOISE ON OFFENSE Freshman Ally Riley started the season as the backup catcher behind Bri Cassidy, but when the Husker bats went quiet, Riley moved into the batting order and has made several appearances since. Riley has played in 19 games, which includes14 starts. Her.391 batting average leads the team and her.478 slugging percentage ranks third. Riley has 18 hits, with four double, two runs and 12 RBIs. In the Wichita State series, Riley, along with fellow freshman, Olivia Ferrell, led the offensive efforts on the team. Riley went 3-for-8 with three RBIs. Together, her and Ferrell, went 5-for-12 (.417) over the weekend, while the rest of the team was 10-for-58 (.172). At the Jayhawk Invitational, Riley also led the team at the plate. going 4-for-8, with two RBIs. In the South Dakota State doubleheader Riley went for a combined 5-for-6, with three RBIs. Simmons stats have significanly improved since her move. ALYVIA SIMMONS 2018 BATTING STATS GS Ave. R H 2B 3B RBIs Leadoff Other Additionally, Simmons is coming off of an impressive weekend against Michigan State. Simmons led the team over the weekend with a.667 batting average. She had six runs, six hits, two doubles and a team-high seven RBIs. On March 24, she had four hits and a career-best five RBIs against the Spartans. Her four hits also are tied for fourth in school history. Also, on March 14, in game two of the South Dakota State doubleheader, Simmons earned her 100th-career hit. I DON T KNOW IS AT THIRD While most of Nebraska s defensive starters have been set since the beginning of the season, the situation at third is a bit different. Three Huskers have made starts at third this season, including sophomores Lexey Kneib and Alexis Perry, and freshman Sarah Yocom. Yocom was thrown into the mix at the Easton Invitational as she made two starts at the position. Kneib has seen the most starts, with 23, while Perry has made eight. The deciding factor could have more to do with offense than defense though, as all three have played well at third when they ve had the opportunity. The Huskers could use another consistent hitter in the lineup. If one of the three third baseman can step it up at the plate, it s possible they will get more starts in the lineup. RECORD WATCH After throwing her first complete game nohitter in 2016, Kaylan Jablonski wrote her way into the Nebraska record book. She is currently tied for 10th in the category. Another complete game no-hitter this season would tie her for sixth, while a total of three would tie her for second place. 6 2018 NEBRASKA SOFTBALL BOWLIN: HOME SWEET HOME HOME WINNING PERCENTAGE Nebraska has won 71 percent of its games at Bowlin Stadium, posting a record since the facility opened in The Huskers have posted a winning record in each of their 16 seasons at Bowlin Stadium.
