1 Cathedral City Classic l Feb Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Travel Day vs. BYU 12:30 p.m. vs. Hawaii 7:30 p.m. Huskers Take Eight-Game Win Streak to California The 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team puts its eight-game winning streak on the line this weekend, when the Huskers play a five-game schedule at the three-day Cathedral City Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park. The 10-1 Huskers have matched the best start in school history and the eight-game win streak is tied for the program s longest in the month of February. The longest a Nebraska team has gone before suffering its second loss is 16 games, as the 2003 Huskers opened the season with a 14-1 record while rising to No. 3 in the polls. The 2011 team can match that start with wins in its first four games this weekend or pass it with a second straight 5-0 tournament. Breaking that record and extending the eight-game win streak will not be easy, as Nebraska will be immediately challenged with a pair of games against ranked teams on the opening day of the tournament. The Huskers open play against a 25th-ranked BYU team that defeated the Huskers 4-1 last season. Nebraska then faces No. 10 Hawaii, which advanced all the way to the Women s College World Series last season. The Huskers have already faced a pair of ranked teams this season, defeating No. 17 Stanford and suffering their only loss to third-ranked Arizona. Nebraska did not face a ranked team while posting a 5-0 record at the Sleep Inn Classic last weekend, but the Huskers still put together an impressive showing at North Texas. Offensively, Nebraska averaged more than six runs per game while outscoring its opponents The Huskers boasted a.376 team batting average and all nine of Nebraska s regular starters had at least four hits in the five games. The highlight of the weekend was the performance of freshman catcher Taylor Edwards. Edwards went 9-for-17 in the tournament, batting.529 while scoring six runs, drawing three walks and homering five times en route to producing 12 RBIs. Edwards homered in each of her five games at the tournament and has now homered in an NCAA-record six straight games. Leading Off... Freshman Taylor Edwards has homered in each of her last six games, setting an NCAA record for most consecutive games hitting a home run. The previous record was five games by Northwestern All-American Tammy Williams during the 2009 season. Nebraska will face both 10th-ranked Hawaii and No. 25 BYU on Friday to open the Cathedral City Classic. The last time Nebraska faced two ranked teams on the same day came at the 2009 Cathedral City Classic, when the Huskers lost to No. 12 Northwestern (5-4) and seventhranked Washington (6-0). Nebraska s current eight-game winning streak ties for the program s longest winning streak in the month of February. The Huskers also won eight straight February games in 1995 and vs. Nevada 3 p.m. vs. Ohio State 10:30 a.m. vs. Long Island 1 p.m. Edwards broke the previous record with a home run in the seventh inning of Nebraska s final game against Tennessee Tech. For her efforts, Edwards was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday. Nebraska was also impressive in the circle, ending the tournament with its first two shutouts of the season in back-to-back games. The staff allowed only seven runs in the five games, posting a 1.27 ERA. The Huskers struck out 37 batters in only 33.0 innings and held opposing hitters to a paltry.123 average. Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann was 3-0 on the weekend with a 0.38 ERA. She tossed her first shutout of the season in a 7-0 win over Northwestern State and struck out 21 batters in 18.1 innings. Freshman right-hander Tatum Edwards earned her first two career victories, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.40 ERA. The Huskers are (.645) all-time in the month of February, including a 9-7 mark last season. NU has clinched a winning month of February for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Under Revelle, Nebraska is (.675) in February. She has posted a winning month of February 14 times in 18 seasons (the Huskers did not play a game in February of 1993, Revelle s first season). Senior Julie Brechtel and freshman Taylor Edwards both enter play this week with seven-game hitting streaks. Brechtel has gone 8-for-21 (.381) with one walk, four runs scored and four RBIs during her hitting streak, while Edwards has gone 11-for-23 (.478) with six home runs, one double, four walks, 16 RBIs and seven runs scored. Junior Ashley Guile has reached base safely in all 10 of her games this season. Guile has recorded a hit in eight of 10 games. In the only two games where she did not get a hit, Guile was hit by a pitch against both Stanford and Tennessee Tech. In addition to a.379 batting average, Guile has drawn five walks and been hit by two pitches to post a team-best.500 on-base percentage this season. NU has allowed a total of 22 runs in 11 games this season, an average of 2.0 runs per game. That total could be even lower, as 13 of the 22 runners who have scored (59 percent) reached base via a walk or hit-by-pitch. Nebraska has allowed two runs or less in 11 of its last 14 games dating back to The Huskers have allowed only two opponents to score three runs this season. The Husker pitching staff enters play this weekend with a 14.1-inning scoreless streak. The staff has not allowed an earned run in more than 16 innings. Nebraska scored 54 runs in the first 10 games of the season, becoming only the sixth Husker team to score 50 runs in the season s first 10 games. Taylor Edwards Sets NCAA Record It took heralded freshman Taylor Edwards only 11 career games to etch her name into the NCAA record book. After homering in the final game of Nebraska s season-opening tournament, Edwards hit a home run in each of Nebraska s five games last weekend in Denton, Texas. The streak of six consecutive games with a home run is an NCAA record, bettering the previous record of five straight games set by Northwestern All-American Tammy Williams in Edwards has homered in seven of her first 11 career games. She also leads Nebraska with a.405 batting average, two doubles, 19 RBIs and a slugging percentage. Edwards Twins Putting on Power Show Freshman twins Tatum and Taylor Edwards have shown impressive power in their first 11 collegiate games. The sisters have combined for 11 home runs in 11 games, with Taylor homering seven times and Tatum adding four home runs. Taylor has hit a home run in an NCAA-record six straight games, while Tatum became the second Husker ever to hit a home run in her first career at bat. The duo has combined to hit 11 of Nebraska s 12 home runs this season and has produced 23 of the Huskers 53 RBIs. The two are already challenging the Nebraska freshman class record of 23 home runs in To the right is a look at the top eight freshman class home run totals in Husker history. FRESHMAN CLASS HR TOTALS Rank Year Total 1st nd rd th th Taylor Edwards Hitting Home Runs at Record Rate Freshman catcher Taylor Edwards has homered in an NCAA-record six consecutive games, and she has seven home runs in her first 11 games. With five games remaining this month, Edwards seven home runs are already the most ever by a Husker in the month of February. Even more impressively, Edwards is only the fifth Husker to hit seven home runs before the month of April. It took Edwards only 11 games to hit her seventh home run, as she reached the total faster than any player in school history. Three-time All-American Ali Viola held the previous mark, hitting her seventh home run in the 13th game of the 1998 season. Edwards is already more than halfway to Viola s NU freshman record of 13 home runs. Huskers Match Best Start in School History Nebraska tied the best 10-game start in school history with a 9-1 record, and the Huskers have a chance to tie the best 15-game mark in school history this weekend. NU is 10-1 this season, becoming the fourth Husker team to begin a season Only three Nebraska teams have won 11 of their first 12 games, while the best 15-game start came in 2003, when the Huskers opened the season Below is a look at the only teams in school history to win nine of their first 10 games and how they fared in their first 15 games and at the end of the season: Year First 10 Games First 15 Games Final Record NCAA Finish Final Ranking N/A N/A N/A N/A Regional 13th Regional Final 15th Regional 18th

5 s at Cathedral City Classic Page 5 Revelle Approaching Coaching Milestones Head Coach Rhonda Revelle is closing in on a pair of milestones in her coaching career. In her 20th season as a head coach, Revelle owns 698 all-time wins. With two more victories, she will join the 700-win club. Revelle also owns 690 wins in her 19 seasons at Nebraska. She is only 10 wins shy of winning her 700th game as a Husker. Revelle also needs only five victories to pass former NU volleyball coach Terry Pettit and move into second place on Nebraska s all-time win chart. Husker Hitters Making Adjustments The Husker offense boasts a.320 batting average and has homered 12 times in 11 games, while averaging 5.5 runs per game. The key to the impressive start has been Nebraska s ability to make adjustments the second, third and fourth time through the batting order. The first time through the lineup this season, Nebraska is hitting just.184 (14-for-76). But the second time through the order, Husker hitters are batting.352 (31-for-88). The average continues to rise the third (.371, 33-for- 89) and fourth (.395, 17-for-43) times through the order. Husker Pitching Staff Posts Impressive Weekend The Nebraska pitching staff continued a solid start to the 2011 season with an impressive performance at the Sleep Inn Classic in Denton, Texas, last weekend. In winning all five games at the tournament, the Huskers posted their first two shutouts of the season and allowed only seven runs in five games, while posting a 1.27 staff ERA. Nebraska closed the season with back-to-back shutouts and a 14.1-inning scoreless streak. Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann went 3-0 with a 0.38 ERA, allowing only seven hits and one earned run in 18.1 innings. Hagemann tossed a two-hit shutout against Northwestern State and finished the weekend with 21 strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Tatum Edwards picked up her first two career wins at the tournament, compiling a 1.40 ERA in 10.0 innings. She allowed only three hits on the weekend and struck out nine, ending her tournament with a two-hit shutout of Tennessee Tech in the first complete game of her career. Husker Offense Also Posts Big Weekend Not to be outdone by the pitching staff, the Husker offense put up gaudy numbers at the Sleep Inn Classic last week. Nebraska hit.376 in five games at the tournament, while slugging six home runs and averaging more than six runs per game. The Huskers twice posted season-high hit totals on the weekend and recorded a.525 slugging percentage and a.436 on-base percentage. Leading the way was freshman Taylor Edwards, who batted.529 last weekend with five home runs and 12 RBIs in only 17 at bats. Edwards homered in each of her five games in Texas, extending her NCAA-record home run streak to six consecutive games. Overall, each of Nebraska s regular starters had at least four hits in the five games last week and all 13 position players who saw action at the tournament scored at least one run. Guile Records 100th Hit Junior Ashley Guile recorded the 100th hit of her career at North Texas on Feb. 19. Guile is the first member of Nebraska s junior class to reach the milestone, and she joins seniors Julie Brechtel and Heidi Foland as current members of the 100-hit club. Guile s 100th hit came with a two-out single in the top of the third inning against the Mean Green. After batting.382 last season, Guile is hitting.379 in 10 games this season. Guile s career.326 batting average ranks 12th in school history. Guile also leads the 2011 Huskers with a.500 on-base percentage. Tatum Edwards Homers in First Career At Bat Tatum Edwards became the first Husker freshman in more than a decade to homer in her first career at bat against Portland State in the season opener. Edwards came to the plate for the first time in her career with two runners on base in the top of the second inning against the Vikings and blasted a three-run home run. The last freshman to homer in her first career at bat was Amber Burgess, who homered in the 2000 season opener. Burgess and Edwards are the only two Husker freshmen known to have homered their first career at bat. Haget Ties School Record Junior Nikki Haget put together an impressive performance against San Jose State in the second game of the season. Haget went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored four times. Her four runs scored tied the school record, as she became the sixth Husker to score four runs in a game. Haget s four hits also tied her career high and were one shy of the school record Big 12 Conference Standings (Feb. 14) Rk. Team Big 12 Overall 1. Nikki Haget, CF (11 starts,.394, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI) A slapper, Haget saw her first action in the field and at the plate during her sophomore season in She won the starting job in center field early in the year and hit.345 with 39 runs scored and 12 stolen bases batting out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup. This season, she moved into the leadoff spot and looks for repeat All-Big 12 honors. 2. Julie Brechtel, 2B (11 starts,.333, 1 2B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs) A four-year starter at second, Brechtel ranked fourth among all sophomores in NU history with 25 walks in 2009 and fifth with a.500 slugging percentage. She then ranked third among all juniors in NU history with 37 RBIs in 2010 while earning second-team all-region honors. Defensively, Brechtel has committed two errors in her last 63 games. 3. Taylor Edwards, C (11 starts,.405, 2 2B, 7 HRs, 19 RBIs) A talented freshman, Edwards begins her career as NU s cleanup hitter. Edwards was a three-time Under Armour All-American in high school and was named the nation s top junior by EA Sports in She hit.520 with 38 homers and 135 RBIs in her prep career. She has homered in her last six games, an NCAA record. 4. Ashley Guile, DP (10 starts,.379, 1 2B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs) After redshirting in 2009, Guile earned all-conference and all-region accolades in Guile posted top-10 totals in school history in doubles (4th, 15), walks (6th, 35) and average (8th,.382) last spring. After catching 39 games in 2010, Guile will focus on offense as the designated player in She hit.480 in that role last season. 5. Brooke Thomason, RF (10 starts,.296, 0 2B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs) Thomason had a bone removed from her foot prior to last season and still earned all-conference and all-region honors as a freshman. With a.321 average, 14 doubles and 11 home runs, Thomason became only the second freshman in Husker history to hit.300 and produce 10 doubles and 10 home runs and only the eighth player overall. 6. Heidi Foland, 3B (11 starts,.294, 1 2B, 0 HR, 3 RBIs) Foland enjoyed a breakout junior season in 2010 and is Nebraska s active career leader in games played, hits, runs, doubles, home runs and stolen bases. She homered 13 times in 2010, the sixth-highest total in school history and the highest total in 10 seasons. Foland boasts 42 career extra-base hits (22 doubles, 19 homers, one triple). 7. Tatum Edwards, 1B (11 starts,.257, 1 2B, 4 HRs, 10 RBIs) Edwards will fill a variety of roles as a freshman for the Huskers in The majority of her playing time is expected to come at first base, but she will also work in the outfield and in the circle. A four-time all-state selection and the 2007 California Freshman of the Year, Edwards has hit four home runs in 11 games and thrown a two-hit shutout. 8. Megan Southworth, LF (8 starts,.391, 1 2B, 0 HR, 2 RBIs) Southworth made the conversion from catcher to the outfield early in her freshman season, earning 17 total starts, including nine in left field. After batting.220 last season, Southworth is competing to be the Huskers starting left fielder in She has earned eight starts and is third on the team with a.391 batting average. 9. Gabby Banda, SS (11 starts,.207, 0 2B, 0 HR, 1 RBI) Banda won Nebraska s starting job at third base last season and will slide over to the starting shortstop position in Banda showed power and patience at the plate as a freshman, producing 10 extra-base hits and drawing 23 walks. In an effort to maximize her speed and potential, Banda is batting both left- and right-handed. 10. Ashley Hagemann, P (5 starts, 7-1, 1.51 ERA, 62 Ks, 46.1 IP) Hagemann set a school record with 19 strikeouts in her debut and finished her freshman year ranked third in the Big 12 in opponent average and strikeouts per seven innings. Last season, Hagemann finished second in the league in saves and fourth in strikeouts. Her career average of 8.2 strikeouts per seven innings ranks fourth in NU history. Morgan McCann, INF/OF (0 starts,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) McCann is the lone Nebraska native among this year s class of newcomers. A two-time honorable-mention all-state selection at Omaha Burke, McCann will work in both the outfield and infield in addition to pinch-running duties. Kylee Muir, INF (1 start,.167, 0 2B, 0 HR, 2 RBIs) Muir redshirted last spring but adds a powerful left-handed bat to the Husker lineup. She is competing for playing time at first base after earning a spot on the all-state team all four years at Lincoln High in Portland, Ore. Madison Drake, OF (2 starts,.250, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Drake entered the Husker program as a pitcher and infielder, but after two years of development, she is competing for a starting job in left field. Drake earned her first five career starts last season and has two starts in Tori Tyson, OF (0 starts,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Tyson emerged as Nebraska s starting left fielder in 2010, making 47 starts after spending her first two years in the program as a pitcher. A chronic back injury is expected to limit Tyson s availability throughout her senior season. Haley Workman, RHP (3 starts, 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 16 Ks, 18.2 IP) Workman was a junior college All-American at Chattanooga State each of the past two seasons. She boasted a 57-8 career record in junior college with a 1.16 ERA and 603 strikeouts in innings. Kirby Wright, C (2 starts,.250, 1 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Wright has been a solid catcher the past two years, working behind a different All-Big 12 catcher each season. She started 20 games at catcher in 2010 and three games as the designated player, batting.224 on the year. Saige Wright, LF (2 starts,.000, 0 2B, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Wright has the ability to find her way onto the field in a variety of ways in her first season, as she could start in left field or at first base. Wright was a third-team junior college All-American at Wallace State last spring.

7 at Cathedral City Classic 4 Page 7 Chasing History Seniors Julie Brechtel and Heidi Foland both have a chance this season to join an exclusive group of Huskers who have produced 100 career hits, RBIs and runs scored. Only seven players in the history of Nebraska softball have reached each of those milestones and only once (2003) has a Husker team featured two players who totaled 100 career hits, RBIs and runs scored. Brechtel and Foland each have work to do to reach at least one of the milestones. Brechtel need a career-high run total to reach all three milestones, while Foland needs a career-high RBI total to reach the marks. Aiding the cause is a move up the lineup to the No. 2 spot in the batting order for Brechtel and a move to the middle of the order for Foland. Below is a look at how Brechtel and Foland stack up against the list of Huskers who are members of the club (listed in the order they joined the club): Name (years) Hits RBIs Runs Tobin Echo-Hawk ( ) Ali Viola ( ) Jennifer Lizama ( ) Amanda Buchholz ( ) Kim Ogee ( ) Nicole Trimboli ( ) Crystal Carwile ( ) Julie Brechtel (2008-present) Heidi Foland (2008-present) Guile Named to Player-of-the-Year Watch List Junior Ashley Guile was among 50 players named to the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year preseason watch list, announced on Feb. 2 by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America. Guile was the first Husker hitter named to the preseason watch list since Nicole Trimboli in As a sophomore in 2010, Guile batted.382 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 42 RBIs. She also drew 35 walks and was hit by 11 pitches to post a.520 on-base percentage to complement a.554 slugging percentage. Guile s 15 doubles were the most ever by a Husker sophomore and ranked fourth all-time, while her.382 average ranked third among all sophomores in NU history and eighth all-time. Her 11 hit-by-pitches tied teammate Julie Brechtel for the school record, while her 35 walks marked the sixth-highest total in school history. For her efforts, Guile was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2010 and a second-team All-Midwest region selection. Guile started 39 of her 59 games at catcher last season, becoming the first Husker catcher to garner first-team all-conference accolades since Jenny Smith in Revelle Inducted into NFCA Hall of Fame Head Coach Rhonda Revelle was formally inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Friday, Dec. 10, as part of the 2010 NFCA National Convention in San Diego. Revelle was joined in the 2010 Hall of Fame class by Florida Southern Head Coach Chris Bellotto and Illinois State Head Coach Melinda Fischer. All three were inducted at a hall of fame banquet, and their selections increased the number of hall of fame coaches to 53 since the organization created its hall of fame in Game-Winning RBI Chart Tatum Edwards, Fr., RHP/UTL Date... She has also been actively involved in NFCA committees, serving as a member of the NFCA All-American Committee for four years before chairing the committee for two more years. Huskers Picked Eighth in Preseason Big 12 Poll Nebraska was picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 Conference preseason coaches poll. Of the seven teams picked to finish ahead of the Huskers, six made an appearance in the top 25 last season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The only team ahead of the Huskers that did not earn a top-25 ranking last season and a berth to the postseason was Baylor. The Lady Bears made it to a Super Regional in 2009 behind Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Whitney Canion, who missed most of last season due to an injury. She is expected to return to full strength for Baylor this season. Nebraska Records 1,000th NCAA Win Since softball became an official NCAA sport in 1982, Nebraska has posted 1,033 victories, winning its 1,000th game at Women s College World Series qualifier Missouri on May 2, Although no official statistic is kept for victories in the NCAA-era, according to research from CBS College Sports conducted in 2007, the Huskers were the 10th program to post 1,000 wins in the NCAA era. The nine other teams that reached 1,000 NCAA wins before Nebraska were UCLA, Arizona, Florida State, Cal State Fullerton, Louisiana-Lafayette, California, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and East Carolina. Head of the Class Nebraska leads all Division I softball programs with 27 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards won by 19 players. The total also ranks second nationally among all female athletic programs, trailing only the Husker volleyball team s 36 selections. NU is one of only three softball programs with 20 or more selections. Head Coach Rhonda Revelle has produced 11 academic All-Americans in her 18 seasons at Nebraska, a total that ranks third nationally during that span. Overall, Nebraska leads all colleges and universities nationally with 279 academic All-Americans across all sports. Program Stability Nebraska softball is renowned for its tradition and one of the Huskers richest traditions is stability. Nowhere is this highlighted more than looking at NU Head Coach Rhonda Revelle and Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel. Revelle is in her 19th season at the helm of the Husker program in 2011, while Sippel is in her 22nd year in Lincoln. Both coaches also played for NU, with Revelle enjoying a three-year career and Sippel starring for four years. Counting their playing days, Revelle and Sippel have combined to be a part of 991 of Nebraska s 1,166 all-time victories (84 percent). Olympic Connections Nebraska is among the national leaders in Olympians produced. The Huskers were one of only three Division I softball programs in 2010 with a roster that featured a 2008 Olympian. Overall, Nebraska has had five former players compete in the only four Olympic Games where softball was included. The Last Time a Husker...
