BELMONT BASEBALL THE BRUINS IN THIS SECTION WHAT THE BRUINS ARE SAYING SEASON PREVIEW TEAM ROSTER MEET THE BRUINS

WHAT THE BRUINS ARE SAYING "Belmont was a good opportunity for me to play baseball and mature as an individual away from my home. When I made my official visit here during recruiting, I was impressed with the school and met great people that made me comfortable in this atmosphere. Senior Infielder Derek Wiley I chose to come to Belmont because it was close to home and I would be able to play in front of my family. Belmont has a family atmosphere within the community and with my coaches and I wanted to attend a small private school with these qualities. Senior Infielder Brandon McCall I transferred into Belmont as a sophomore because I felt I wasn't happy at my old college. I chose Belmont because of the atmosphere. Belmont welcomed me with open arms and was very kind to me and also allowed me to persue my dream of playing college baseball. I also enjoy having two cousins on the basketball team at Belmont. Even though the baseball team is my family, it is nice to have some blood relatives. Belmont was where I wanted to be and I have no regrets coming here. I have made life long friends and have enjoyed every moment at the school. Senior Pitcher Jimmy Stanley 2009 Belmont Baseball - page 14

WHAT THE BRUINS ARE SAYING I chose to attend Belmont because of its family atmosphere and the strong community the school has present here. Belmont has a strong athletic program and excellent academics. I wanted to come to a place where I could build long-lasting relationships and increase my spiritual growth and Belmont has allowed me to do these things.. Senior Pitcher Nick Whitaker My father attended Belmont and I wanted to continue the Bruins' tradition and follow in his footsteps. I came here to play baseball and continue to pursue my musical career and the school's location in Nashville, Tenn. is a tremendous benefit for this endeavor. I'm proud to be a part of the morals and small-family atmosphere that Belmont represents.. Senior Pitcher Brian Kelley 2009 Belmont Baseball - page 15

SEASON PREVIEW 2008 Review Pitching The Bruins made the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the second consecutive season after posting sixteen conference wins. Several of these victories included series wins over North Florida, Stetson, East Tennessee State, USC Upstate and Campbell. During the A-Sun Tournament, head coach Dave Jarvis won his 300th game at Belmont in his career. In non-conference play, Belmont gained wins over 2008 NCAA participant Western Kentucky and Southeastern Conference member Tennessee on the road. Several Bruins received numerous conference honors during the season. Senior Derek Wiley was named the A-Sun Player of the week on Apr. 4, 2008 after the Bruins swept Stetson in a conference series. Carlo Testa was named to the A-Sun All-Conference First Team as a pitcher and a fielder and this was the first time in conference history that an individual player has received this honor in a season. Current sophomores Nate Woods and Matt Zeblo were named to the A-Sun All- Freshman team after exemplary first seasons. The accolades for Belmont continued in the post-season when Wiley was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team for hitting.412 over the Bruins' four games, including three home runs and seven RBIs. Furthermore, he was selected in the 50th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Entry Draft by the Oakland Athletics. Testa was also selected in the 18th round by the Kansas City Royals. Belmont will have to replace three valuable seniors lost to graduation and an All-Conference starter in its pitching rotation this upcoming season. Josh Moffitt graduates from Belmont after becoming a three-year starter for the Bruins and finishing with innings pitched in his career, good enough for fifth all-time in school history. Graduate Eric Diaz made 74 pitching appearances for Belmont, which is one short of the alltime record. Finally, Chris Manning is tied for the most saves in Belmont history with 25 and also made 72 appearances, which is third all-time. Finally, Testa has decided to pursue a career in professional baseball and leaves the Bruins after finishing fifth in the A-Sun in wins with six, sixth in strikeouts with 70, first in shutouts with one and had two complete games last season. He led the Bruins in every one of those categories, including innings pitched at The Bruins do return two weekend starters in senior Brian Kelley and sophomore Nate Woods. Kelley transferred into the Belmont program last season and pitched in 16 games, including 12 starts, and 49 strikeouts, which were both the second-most on the team. He pitched a complete game and had a career-high seven strikeouts against Kennesaw State on March 20, Woods will also return to the weekend rotation after solidifying his in mid-season last year Belmont Baseball - page 16

SEASON PREVIEW He made sixteen appearances on the mound with 11 starts with one save and also had second-most wins on the team with five. His ERA of 3.94 was the lowest for a starter and sixth-best in A-Sun. He also pitched 61.2 innings and the opponents' batting average was.246, fifth-best in A-Sun. "We're excited about what we've seen from Brian and Nate this offseason," said Belmont head coach Dave Jarvis. "We'll use our practices in February and even the early non-conference portion of our schedule to determine who our third starter will be. I like our candidates and the possibilities that we have among our pitchers to become starters during the weekend series and mid-week contests." Belmont does return preseason All-Conference nominee, senior Jimmy Stanley, to the bullpen after he made 20 appearances as relief pitcher and finished with six saves, which tied him for second in A-Sun. Stanley posted 31 strikeouts while allowing only five walks and opponents hit only.229 against him, which was the lowest on team among all pitchers. "Jimmy was dominant during our offseason work as a closer," said Jarvis. "He also started some games for us in our Fall Series as well and was efficient in this role as well. Jimmy has just been exceptional as our closer and we will look to keeping him in this role during the season." Belmont will also use the services of returning sophomore Tyler Graskewicz and seniors Logan Simmons and Nick Whitaker to help complete the bullpen and potentially the starting rotation. the contest. He had second-lowest ERA among relievers at 2.32 and pitched 31.0 innings with 21 strikeouts to only four walks. Freshmen Tim Hassett, Matt Hamann and converted pitcher, sophomore Jon Ivie, among others will vie for innings with the Bruins this season. Cather Sophomores Matt Zeblo and Vinny Casha will once again share duties at catcher for Belmont this season. Zeblo started in 36 of 45 games played as catcher and outfielder and was named to A- Sun All-Freshman team. He finished in top-5 for team in batting average (.292), walks (20) and on-base percentage (.399). Casha started in 32 out of 44 games played as catcher and designated hitter. He finished season with 31 hits and 41 total bases while having only had four errors and six passed balls for the entire season. He also had seven multi-hit games and three games with at least 2 RBIs. "We had two freshmen in that position and both matured tremendously over the year," said Jarvis. "Both of them have made progress and will share time at catcher again this season. We play a long season and it can wear a catcher down. We have the luxury of rotating each of them in for a variety of reasons such as rest, hitting potential or injury concerns." Infield Graskewicz made 13 appearances last season, including one start, which was against nationally-ranked Vanderbilt on April 23, 2008 and pitched a career-high five innings in Belmont has the luxury to potentially return its entire starting infield from last season Belmont Baseball - page 17

SEASON PREVIEW Preseason All-America candidate, senior Derek Wiley, had the most productive season of his career and matched or broke several Belmont records. He started in 55 out of 56 games played as an infielder and designated hitter and was named to the Atlantic Sun All- Tournament team. Wiley finished the 2008 season second in the A-Sun in home runs (17), seventh in total bases (125), fifth in slugging percentage (.622) and first in RBIs (65), which broke the seasonhigh record for that category in Belmont history. He led Belmont in each category listed this season. His home run total was also a single-season record, previously held by Brian Bogaard, who posted 16 home runs in 1999 Wiley currently holds the school record for most career home runs at 40 and is currently third all-time in career RBIs with 161, which is only 12 behind the current leader, Wilson Tucker. He also had 17 multi-hit and 16 multi-rbi games. For his efforts, Wiley was selected 1489th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 50th round in the 2008 MLB Draft but has chosen to return for his final season at Belmont. "Derek had an outstanding offensive season last year and will continue to do that for us, but my expectations for him go beyond his numbers," said Jarvis. "We're looking for him to grow as a senior leader of this team." had 24 multi-hit games, nine multi-rbi games and finished season on seven-game hitting streak. Elkins started in all 58 games for Belmont at shortstop and led the Atlantic Sun and set a school-record in walks with 44 last season. He led the team and finished tied for 10th in A-Sun for runs scored with 54 and also had 12 doubles, which was the fifth-most on the team. Elkins was successful in seven out of eight stolen base attempts and led team in sacrifice hits with four. He also had career-long hitting streak of 13 games, the second-longest on team. On the field, the junior had a team-high 148 assists. Senior Brandon McCall looks to return to third base for another season after an excellent junior campaign. He played and started in all 58 games at third base for the Bruins and led team in doubles with 18, which was tied for seventh in the A-Sun. McCall finished second on the team in batting average (.335), runs (44), hits (77), triples (3), on-base percentage (.404) and third in walks (30) and slugging percentage (.478). His 25 multiple hit games were the most on the team and he also had a career-long hitting streak of nine games. Belmont will also look to junior Brandon Frazier, sophomore Derek Hamblen and newcomers such as freshman Drew Turner to serve as reserve players in the infield. Belmont will return the middle of the infield with juniors Daniel Wagner at second base and Packy Elkins at shortstop. Wagner played in all 55 games played in season at second base and was one of four players to finish with batting average above.300 at.303. He finished second in stolen bases with 15 and placed in top-five for team in runs (37), hits (72), doubles (13) and total bases (95). Finally, he "It's exciting to have our entire staring infield back for another season," said Jarvis. "We're also looking at players such as Frazier, Hamblen and Turner to fill in for our infielder in a important reserve role for us." Outfield Belmont will lose the services of Testa in the outfield as well as on the mound as a pitcher. He finished the season 2009 Belmont Baseball - page 18

SEASON PREVIEW fifth in the A-Sun in batting average (.387), eighth in hits (82), first in triples (8), forth in stolen bases (26), fifth in walks (37), 10th in doubles (17), third in on-base percentage (.479), ninth in total bases (124) and eighth in slugging percentage (.586). He led the Bruins in every category listed accept slugging percentage, walks and total bases. "We probably have more two-way players on our roster than any in the country," said Jarvis. "It's a balancing act and requires constant communication between me, the player and our pitching coach Matt Barnett for it to be successful. We have to gauge how many pitches they are throwing per week and consider the doubleheaders we play in our conference schedule as well." The Bruins also lost reserve outfielder Nick Kulp due to graduation. However, Belmont will benefit from the return of Woods and Hamblen to the corner outfield positions. Woods started in 46 out of 49 games played as an outfielder and pitcher and finished season with 44 hits, 34 runs scored and 65 total bases. He also had third-most stolen bases on the team with 12 and had eight multi-hit games and three games with at least two RBIs. Woods also had career-high six-game hitting streak during the season. Hamblen started in 55 out of 56 games played in season and finished in top-five on team for runs (38), hits (59), doubles (14), total bases (82) and slugging percentage (.402). He also led the team in sacrifice hits with four and was second in sacrifice flies with five along with seven stolen bases. The sophomore had 17 multi-hit games, seven multiple RBI games and finished season on teamlong nine-game hitting streak. "Nate and Derek have played a lot of time in our outfield and this should continue this season," said Jarvis. "We're also looking at juniors Ryan Kincherlow and Mark Noth to see some time there as well." Ivie and freshmen Hamann, Taylor Russell, Phillip Parsley and Dylan Craig will see some time in the outfield as well. Two-way players Belmont has the benefit of using two-way players in the past several years to increase flexibility in the roster. This season will be no exception with Woods, Ivie, Hamann, Graskewicz, sophomore Dane Swinehart and newcomer freshman Garrett Fanchier seeing time as pitchers and fielders. Schedule Belmont will play another season in the Atlantic Sun Conference and will have home series against East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State and Mercer. The Bruins will travel for road series against USC Upstate, North Florida, Campbell, Stetson and Lipscomb. The Bruins will have home and away series against Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Samford, Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Murray State, Tennessee- Martin. Belmont will have three contests against Southeastern Conference teams this year. The Bruins will host Vanderbilt on March 18 and visit the Commodores on Apr. 1. They will also travel this season to face Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. on Apr. 14. "Our schedule is challenging as usual," said Jarvis. "The A-Sun continues to improve every season and all the teams play well." "It's good to have Samford back on the schedule. Birmingham, Ala. isn't too far for us to travel for a midweek contest. Teams such as Western Kentucky, MTSU and Austin Peay are always outstanding programs. Tennessee Tech continues to get better every year as well. We like to face several SEC teams every year and its right that we face the two teams in our state, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, again this season." Belmont will also host two weekend series against Missouri Valley team Illinois State to start the season beginning on Feb. 20 and Mid-Atlantic team Toledo for three games starting on Feb Belmont Baseball - page 19
