3 Patent No.: 5,360,150 Date: November 1, 1994 This patent is for the mechanism of lifting the bicycle or other cargo from a lower level to the roof of the car. This design is for the use with many different types of cargo. The objective is to ease the connecting of the cargo to the rack by lowering the connections to eye level so that they can be appropriately and safely attached. The design works by rotating up while keeping the cargo in an upright position.

4 Patent No.: 6,149,039 Date: November 21, 2000 This patent is for a bicycle carrier which attaches to the roof of a car. It is a full assembly. Its main feature is the supports, which are able to rotate between a vertical transport position and a horizontal loading/unloading position. The horizontal position is at about the height of the car roof, making it easier to load the bicycle with only one person. The supports are aided by springs which tend to pull it more towards the upright position. This is not meant for multiple bicycles. It is more similar to our flexible bars concept design than to any of our other concepts.

5 Patent No: 5,360,151 Date: November 1, 1994 This patent describes a bike rack that attaches to the roof of a car and extends to the side of the car. The base and bike holder fold about a joint (31), such that a bike mounted by its handlebars and seat is rotated about that joint and sits upside-down on top of the car. The patent claims the use of a tension member shown in the figure to stop the bike holder from going past parallel to the roof of the car. It also claims the use of multiple arms to hold the bike(s) or tandem bikes, and it claims the use of the rack as a means of holding the bike to service it on-the-move.

6 Patent No.: 5,709,521 Date: Jan. 20, 1998 The design is a vertical, height adjustable column that is attached to a base mounted on the top of an existing car bike rack. The column swings downward to grasp the bike from the standing position on the ground. The actual lift assist mechanism is a commercially available piston-cylinder assembly described as an air-spring that is commonly used in car hatch back doors. The lift assist power device is guided along the column to transfer the power from the piston to the column. The carrier holds the bike in a upright position over the car where the wheels can be strapped to the bike rack just like a normal vertical bike rack. This design is similar to many that have also been patented.

7 Patent No.: 6,638,000 Date: October 28, 2003 This design utilizes a single rotating rod to lift a bicycle from the ground to the roof of a car. The rod attaches at one end to an extension shaft for a gearbox mounted on the roof of the car, which is in turn driven by a motor or hand crank to rotate the shaft/rod assembly. A mounting bracket that attaches to the handles bars and the bike seat is mounted via bearing on the other end of the rod to support the bicycle. This allows the bicycle to remain upright as it is rotated and lifted. Additional support brackets hold the bicycle securely in place once it is on the vehicle roof. This design is only meant for a single bicycle. It most closely resembles a simplified version of our articulated lifting arm design.

8 Patent No.: 5,690,259 Date: Nov. 25, 1997 This system allows for the loading and unloading of bikes via a sliding rack system, the bicycles are loaded and unloaded from the back of the car. To reach the driving position the rack can be lifted and slid into place, then locked to ensure safety. Multiple can be equipped to roof, with rooftop transfer roof load bars, where the loading procedure is the same for each bike, even for the center bike. A foam hollow cylinder is present to protect the car and to adjust the loading position.
