1 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER, DEVONSHIRE AREA Greetings all, As we enter the summer months, I would like to encourage the community to be vigilant protecting your property. Currently, we are seeing an increase in Theft and Grand Theft Auto crimes. I would like to emphasize for everyone to be aware of your surroundings and watch for suspicious activity. By doing so, we can hopefully apprehend the suspects committing these crimes. Simple steps include utilizing a steering wheel lock or ignition kill switch for the older vehicles (1990s models) can deter a thief from targeting your vehicle. Thank you again for your hard work in our Devonshire community to help drive down crime. Please contact your Senior Lead Officer for any questions about crime prevention tips or to start-up a Neighborhood Watch meeting at (818) During the month of May, Supporters of Law Enforcement in Devonshire (SOLID) members and the Senior Lead Officers organized our 23 rd Annual Pancake Breakfast event. The event was very successful thanks to all of the volunteers and community attendees. The event continued and transitioned to an Open House of our Devonshire Police Station along with several static display booths at Devonshire Park, including display vehicles from our local Army service members, LAPD police vehicles, LAPD police helicopter and our Devonshire volunteer programs. Thank you SOLID for all your support in Devonshire! Our upcoming event in June: Special Olympics Torch Run on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at 8:00 A.M., located at Egremont School, Devonshire Street (nearest cross street is Oakdale Avenue) in Northridge. Please come out to support the athletes and officers that will run for this worthy cause. If you have any questions, please contact SLO Daniel Del Valle at (818) or 27677@lapd.lacity.org. As you read through the highlights by our Senior Lead Officers, please share their messages with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and clergy members. Our partnership between the community and Devonshire Community Police is paramount for the continued success in crime reduction for Devonshire Area. I look forward to working with all of you, and protecting the community we serve in the Devonshire Area. 2 BASIC CAR HIGHLIGHTS SLO Supervisor, Sgt. II Jose Torres Direct No.: (818) or Main No.: (818) BASIC CAR AREA 17A23 Senior Lead Officer Daniel Del Valle, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: Basic Car 17A23 concerned crime trend this past month was Robbery. We are up 50% in the Robbery category for 2016, (6) YTD compared to last year of only (4) YTD, which occurred in Chatsworth/Porter Ranch area. All other categories of crime showed a significant decrease with an overall decrease of -23%. Please let others know of the crime activity that is occurring in the area and report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: The next Basic Car 17A23 Neighborhood Watch Meeting is Thursday, June 23, 2016, at 7:00 P.M. Our meetings are held every 4 th Thursday of the month, located at 9901 Mason Avenue, Saint John Eudes Church in Chatsworth. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: Our biggest crime increase was Robbery. Please do your best to be aware of your surroundings and make eye contact with those around you! Avoid walking at night alone, in alley ways, secluded or in poorly lit areas. The odds of being a victim increases; however, these small steps can help prevent you from being the next victim! BASIC CAR AREA 17A35 Senior Lead Officer Dario Del Core, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) ; 27286@lapd.lacity.org and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: As we close the first week of May, our Basic Car Area continues to do well with regards to violent crimes and Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles (one of the two property crime categories that always affected us). Year-to-date, we are -15% compared to the same time period in Also, even though we are still down in Burglaries (- 3% year to date), we need to do a better job securing our homes. Twenty percent of this year s burglaries involved unlocked doors/windows. Please work with your neighbors, remain vigilant and report all non-emergency to our Direct Dispatch line at NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Neighborhood Watch Basic Car meeting will be on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at 7:00 P.M., located at Saint Euphrasia Church, Shoshone Avenue in Granada Hills. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: Protect your vehicle license plates and registration tabs. Check your license plate occasionally to ensure they are securely fastened and that your current year license tab is attached. Tip: If you have a build-up of past year tabs, remove them prior to adding the current year. Once you attach the current sticker, slice an X or diagonal lines with a sharp razor blade through the year tab so the sticker will not come apart in one piece. A sturdy metal frame bolted to the license plate will discourage thieves from cutting
3 the corner off your license plate in order to steal the year s sticker. Be aware of people loitering near the rear of vehicles and call the police if you suspect criminal activity. BASIC CAR AREA 17A49 Senior Lead Officer Janine Angeles, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) @lapd.lacity.org and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following crime statistics are from January 1 to May 7, These numbers reflect the number of crimes which occurred in Basic Car 17A49 only. There were (43) Grand Theft Autos, (13) Robberies, (62) Thefts, (66) Burglaries, (21) Aggravated Assaults and (90) Burglary/Theft from Motor Vehicles. The crime is down -6.9% from last year at this time. Be aware of your surroundings! Please report suspicious activity. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next Basic Car Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at 7:00 P.M. Location to be announced. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: There have been a lot of older model (1990 ) vehicles being stolen from the area. By using a steering wheel locking device, it will significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim. Remember, anything you can do to make it more difficult for the bad guys will lesson your odds of being the next victim! PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A START UP MEETING! BASIC CAR AREA 17A67 Senior Lead Officer Patti Peteque, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) @lapd.lacity.org and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following Part-1 crime statistics cover the period of April 17 to May 7, There have been (5) Aggravated Assaults, (9) Burglary/Thefts from Motor Vehicles, (1) Burglary, (8) Grant Theft Autos, (12) Personal Theft/Other Property, (2) Rapes, and (0) Robberies. Basic Car A67 is currently at -17.5% YTD. We are still doing very well compared to last year. Most of the crimes in our area are down with the exception of Rape (9 vs. 3 = 200%) and Thefts (63 vs. 61 = 3.3%). The areas where most of the crimes are occurring are Plummer Street to Roscoe Boulevard and Tampa Avenue to Reseda Boulevard. We continue to have Vandalism and Graffiti activity along the Reseda corridor. There is no set pattern for when this activity is taking place. We are continuing with the extra patrol from patrol officers, including the Volunteer Bike Patrol Unit. The B/TFMV crimes are being committed primarily between the hours of 10:00 P.M. 6:00 A.M. If you have information on any of the above listed crimes, please DO NOT hesitate to contact me. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our next monthly Basic Car Neighborhood Watch meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at 7:00 P.M., located at Calahan Elementary School, Knapp Street in Northridge. Hope to see you there! CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: Please DO NOT forget to secure your valuables inside your vehicles. We continue to have victims leaving property/items in plain view (laptops, backpacks, purses, phones etc.). Most of these have been smash and grab incidents. Please
4 share the word and don t let this happen to you. Continue to stay vigilant and alert. Do not hesitate to report any suspicious activity you see immediately. For Emergency, dial 911. For non-emergency, please call (877) ASK-LAPD or contact the Devonshire station front desk at (818) BASIC CAR AREA 17A81 Senior Lead Officer John Parker, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) @lapd.lacity.org and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: The following Part-1 crime statistics cover the period of January 1 to May 17, There have been (0) Homicide, (1) Rape, (18) Robberies, (24) Aggravated Assaults, (64) Burglaries, (39) Grand Theft Autos, (70) Burglary Thefts from Motor Vehicles, and (226) Personal Theft/Other Property. Basic Car A81 is currently at 11.1% YTD. We are still doing very well compared to last year. Most of the crimes in our area are down with the exception of Aggravated Assault (24 vs. 17 = 41.2 %), Burglary (64 vs. 53 = 13.2 %), GTA (39 vs. 22 = 77.3%) and Thefts (226 vs. 204 = 10.8 %). The total Part-I crimes for our Basic Car is up 11.1 %. Most of our crimes are occurring along Tampa Avenue between Plummer Street and Roscoe Boulevard. And along Parthenia Street between Corbin Avenue and De Soto Street. The time period was between 12:00 P.M. and 12:00 A.M. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our Basic Car Neighborhood Watch meeting for the month of June is cancelled. The next basic car meeting for 17A81 will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at 7:00 P.M., located at The Garden Christian Fellowship Church, Nordhoff Street in Chatsworth. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: Most vehicles that have been broken into recently have been left unlocked. It appears that thieves are using a device to bypass your security alarm and unlock your vehicle. If you research security devices bypassing car locks, it will talk about several things you can do to prevent someone from getting into your vehicle, such as placing your keys in the microwave, placing it in the freezer, using aluminum foil or purchasing a pouch to place your keys in (ie. Faraday Pouches) that prevents the signal from being taken from your key remote. The main message is to not leave any valuables in your vehicle. Remember to Lock it! Hide it! Keep it! June Quote: Start by doing what s necessary; then do what s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. - Francis of Assisi BASIC CAR AREA 17A95 Senior Lead Officer Efren Corral, Direct No.: (818) or Cell No.: (818) @lapd.lacity.org and CRIME TRENDS AND LOCATIONS: We have unfortunately seen a significant increase in our vehicle related crimes. The vehicles broken into have increased a total of 47.5 % (compared to 2015 YTD crime statistics). Most of these crimes occurred on Sundays, Wednesdays and
5 Thursdays during the mid-afternoon hours and into the early morning hours. Unfortunately, some of these crimes could have been prevented. Please do not leave your vehicle open or unlocked. Remember to Lock it, Hide it, and Keep it! NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH EVENTS: Our Basic Car Neighborhood Watch meeting for the month of June is cancelled. The next basic car meeting for 17A95 will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 7:00 P.M., located at The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Plummer Street in Northridge. CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION: Most vehicles that have been broken into recently have been left unlocked. If you park your car in the driveway, lock it. If you are going into a business for just a minute, lock it. If you think you locked it, check again and lock it. I cannot stress it enough. Some criminals go down the street checking vehicle doors until they find the one that is unlocked. Please protect your property and do not become a victim. Lock your vehicle.
