5 This is PRELIMINARY INFORMATION. This data is not final and is subject to change. Simple Crime Prevention Tips: Residential Keep all doors and windows locked, even if you are at home or will only be gone a short time. Make your home look occupied. Leave lights on when you go out and if you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps and a radio to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day. Install motion sensor lighting around your home especially at entrances. Keep your garage door closed and locked, even when home. If you do leave your garage door open and it is an attached garage lock the door into the house. Secure your vehicle and don t leave the garage door opener in your vehicle. Be alert to persons going from house to house, looking in windows or knocking on doors. Report suspicious persons immediately. Make note of the person s physical description, clothing, tattoos or other distinguishing characteristics. Keep all entrances to your residence well-lit and maintain landscaping. Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time. Don t allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly. Vehicle Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you're away from it, even for "just a minute." Always roll up the windows and lock the car, even if it's in front of your home. Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk.
6 Remove portable electronic devices such as smart phones and GPS navigation systems, including suction cup or bean bag type mounts. (Even the visible appearance of a suction cup ring on the glass windshield can be an enticement to a thief to break in and look for the GPS system.) Park in busy, well-lighted area. When you pay to park in a lot or garage, leave just the ignition or valet key with the attendant. Make sure no personal information is attached. Do the same when you take your car for repairs. If you see suspicious person(s) or activity in your neighborhood or business, call Cerritos Sheriff s Station at (562) or 911 immediately. It s a good idea to keep the Sheriff s Station phone number stored in your cell phone for quick reference. Criminals are deterred by informed, vigilant, and involved citizens. Remember - see something, say something.
