6 Crime Prevention Page 6 PREVENTING BREAK-INS 1. Trim shrubs and trees from in front of windows and doors, so possible intruders can t use them for concealment. 2. During evenings and at night, keep drapes or shades drawn, to avoid enticing possible intruders. Sheers can help to conceal your home s interior during the day while allowing in light. 3. Secure air conditioners, so that they are not easily removed from a window by an intruder from the outside. 4. Advertise an alarm system, even if you don t have one. Posting a lawn sign or sticker might make a thief think twice about breaking into your home. 5. Place your house number on your mailbox, but avoid putting your name on it. 6. Consider motion sensing lights that draw attention to movement. Make sure any lighting provides adequate coverage on your home. 7. Make sure neighborhood watch signs are posted and visible in the neighborhood to let potential burglars know they re being watched. 8. Before going on vacation, notify the Post Office to hold your mail until the date you specify for delivery to continue. 9. Utilize a timer set to turn interior lights on and off at varying intervals to give the appearance that someone is home. 10. Avoid hiding a spare key under the door mat or flower pot. Thieves know all of the good hiding places. 11. Invest in solid doors and good quality locks on doors, windows, and sliding glass doors. 12. Whenever you go outside, lock the door and take the key with you, even if you are stepping next door or mowing the grass. Bright Idea? Light Up Your Neighborhood!
