3 Eligibility for any co-curricular ensemble requires enrollment in curricular choirs (Treble or Bass Clef). COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING THE VSW SILVER CORD AWARD PROGRAM What is the Silver Cord Award? The Silver Cord Award is a distinguished graduation award available to Valley High School seniors who volunteer a minimum of 50 hours during every year of high school. Earning the award begins at VSW and ends at Valley. Seniors must have their hours completed by May 1 st and will be awarded their cord at the Graduation Awards Night prior to the commencement ceremony. Year round Cyndi Bonus Community Service Learning Coordinator Phone# bonusc@wdmcs.org Who is Eligible to Participate? All Freshman are eligible to participate in the Silver Cord Program starting the first day of school. This distinguished graduation award can be earned by any student regardless of their GPA, rigor of course study, artistic ability or athletic ability. You do not need to be an honor students to participate. It is for any student willing to share their gift of time with the community. How Does a Student Sign Up? The best way for a freshman to sign up is to simply start volunteering. Every week new service opportunities are posted in the VSW daily announcements, the Southwoods Serves bulletin board and the WDMCS/ Community Education- Silver Cord web page. To begin participation several forms are used. The Pre-approval form is for students who want to volunteer for opportunities not announced or posted at school. The Silver Cord form is the document taken to the service site and signed by the volunteer coordinator. The Documentation of Hours form is a time sheet used to record on-going weekly activities. After the first Silver Cord form has been turned in the student is officially earning hours toward the award. All forms can be found in the office and also on the WDMCS/ Community Education-Silver Cord web page. The best place to get information about the Silver Cord Program is the direct link from students Infinite Campus page. 4 DEBATE starting in the summer before the 9 th grade year starts and after school during the school year. Dance Team is a great way to meet new people. Team socials are scheduled once a month. The VSW Forensics Class and Team includes many activities such as policy, Lincoln Douglas, Legislative and Public Forum Debate. It also includes speech activities like Original Oratory, Prose/Poetry, Acting and Extemporaneous Speaking. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who would like to develop their critical thinking, research, writing and speaking skills. Forensics (debate) is co-curricular. You must be enrolled in the class to be on the team. The team participates in local tournaments with some travel opportunities out of the state for Freshman who excel and qualify in their area of competition. Students will have travel expenses for out of town and out of state tournaments. The Freshman will work closely with the varsity team members at Valley. It is an excellent way to develop skills for upper level high school classes and good preparation for college and standardized testing. Performances are throughout the year and not all students go to each competition. Sept. May Gracie Brandsgard / Valley High School Phone# brandsgardg@wdmcs.org Listen to announcements for initial meeting times and for practice times. Regular meetings and practices are coordinated with the VHS Forensics Teams. FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA) Students have an opportunity to talk about their faith and how it applies to their everyday life and activities. Guest speakers, retreats and huddle groups highlight the schedule during the year. TBD Sue Boyle Valley High School Phone# boyles@wdmcs.org Students can join at any time during the year. A calendar of meeting and events will be handed out at the end of the first meeting and is available electronically. 5 LUMBERJACK CLUB MEDIA CENTER HELPER MOCK TRIAL ORCHESTRA STUDENT LEADERSHIP compete with your fellow students. Information and sign-up sheets can always be found in the main office at Valley Southwoods. This is a group activity for any VSW student. The club meets before school every Friday morning at VSW. Students will make (and eat) pancakes together and get to know one another. This club is open to all 9 th grade students and you can join at any time during the school year to socialize and flip some pancakes!! Numbers may be limited due to space. Helpers assist with the day-to-day operation of the Media Center, such as checking out books to students, re-shelving materials, helping select new books, etc. Mock Trial introduces students to the legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. The students play the roles of attorneys, plaintiffs, and defendants. Local attorneys serve as their coaches. In addition to the regular daily orchestra class students may participate in Mariachi Tigres de Valle and smaller chamber ensembles such as string quartets that perform in various settings. Ten Student Senators are elected at the two West Des Moines Junior Highs to serve their freshmen year (Five from Stilwell and Five from Indian Hills). The Student Senate serves as student ambassadors during summer registration at VSW. Once school begins the senate meets on a monthly basis. Student Government discusses issues offered by students and staff members, makes recommendations for change, helps to encourage school spirit and votes on possible activities and traditions that they would like to see implemented during or after the school day, such as starting clubs, community service projects and fund-raisers. We strive to make connections with VHS by sharing Homecoming week activities, as well as the Homecoming Dance and the Valentine Dance. 1 st Semester & 2 nd Semester Dec. Mar. Sept May Ms. Barb Goetschel goetschelb@wdmcs.org Mr. Bittick bittickc@wdmcs.org Shannan Belden Indian Hills/Stilwell Phone# beldens@wdmcs.org Michelle Senger sengerm@wdmcs.org Chris Larson larsonc@wdmcs.org **Numbers may be limited during the school year due to space available. Students work during his/her study hall time. We select four students for 1 st semester and a different group of four students for 2 nd semester. Teams of 8-10 usually meet two nights a week for 2 hours each night for about 11 weeks. Competition is in March in Des Moines. SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING WEIGHT LIFTING The Tigerlillies are recognized as a club sport. Our main focus is the annual Water Show in the spring. The Tigerlillies season is typically a two month season with a few clinic opportunities prior to the start of the season. This activity requires about five hours a week. Meets in the VSW weight room. Open to all VSW 9 th grade students. Supervised weight training times and days of the week will be announced at the beginning of the school year. Susan Vandeventer Phone# (h) Phone# (c) mrs.van63@yahoo.com Andrew Mitchell mitchella@wdmcs.org Focus will be on the fundamentals of strength training.

6 YEARBOOK ADDITIONAL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES The Yearbook Staff is responsible for all aspects of putting the yearbook together and will consist of the following positions: taking pictures and using your own creativity to make individual pages for the yearbook. Students interested should add the informational meeting at the beginning of the school year. Listen for the announcement about this meeting when the school year has begun. Check out the Valley Student Handbook, online under Valley High School, for additional clubs that you might be interested in joining that are housed at VHS and meet there after school. Call the sponsor listed for more information about days and times for the meetings! Sept. May The staff will be expected to commit to hours through the school year. This will include study halls, after school and Saturdays. No experience necessary-informal training will be provided as a group by Herff-Jones. If you are interested in starting a new club at VSW, contact: Mr. Eric Boyle Team Leader/Associate VSW!
