Due to the senstve nature of the story the names have been changed. Alcoholsm s a sckness not only to the drnker, but often to hs/her famly as well. Whle Alcoholcs Annonymous deals drectly wth the problem drnker, Al-Anon s a group organzed to help the famles of alcoholcs lead normal lves. Al-Anon, an afflate of AA, uses AA's serenty prayer and twelve step method as gudelnes for progress, accordng to Grace, member of the group. At the meetngs famly members relate personal experences as a way of helpng to solve problems. The serenty prayer s rected before and after every meetng to remnd members they cannot cure the alcoholc by themselves. Unfortunately, some group members sad they have tred to take on ths task alone. " used to get so frustrated wth hm (my husband). Every nght would st down and threaten hm by tellng hm that was gong to leave hm f he ddn't stop drnkng, but that seemed Planes crash n fog; 93 de n exploson MADRD, Span (AP) - A Spansh jetlner got lost n fog and taxed nto a Boeng 727 that was acceleratng at about 100 mph pror to takeoff from Madrd arport yesterday, settng off a fery exploson that klled 33 people, offcals t was the second ar dsaster n Madrd n 10 days. One survvor of the latest crash, an Amercan, sad he thought nether plane should have been allowed to take off n the dense fog. The arport, whch has no ground radar, had been closed to ncomng flghts. Ar traffc control offcals sad the collson occurred at 9:45 a.m. (3:45 a.m. EST) when an bera Ar Lnes Boeng 727 carryng 84 passengers, ncludng 40 Japanese, and nne crew members, accelerated to lake off toward the north for Rome. They sad the plot, after apparently spottng the other jet approachng on the ground, just managed to get the 727's nose up. Transport Mnster Enrque Baron and bera Presdent Carlos Espnosa de los Monteros sad a DC-9 of Avaco, a domestc Spansh arlner carryng 37 passengers and fve crew, got lost whle taxng and collded wth the mdsecton of the 727, went under t and burst nto flames. SPOKESMEN FOR bera, Span's natonal arlne, and Avaco sad SO passengers and one crew member aboard bera Flght No. 350 to Rome ded. All 37 passengers and fve crew members of Avaco Flght No. 134 to the northern Spansh cty of Santander pershed, they Baron had earler put the number of vctms at 104, but t was beleved the hgher fgure was due to a confuson n the names of the Japanese toursts travelng on the Boeng 727. An estmated 23 of the survvors of the 727 jetlner were hosptalzed, offcals Thomas Goltz, 39, a Madrd resdent from El Paso, Texas, and hs wfe Sydney, 32, were seated n the back of the bera plane and survved the crash wth mnor bruses. Goltz, manager of the Snger Co. n Madrd, sad nether plane should have been allowed to leave the arport. "t (the 727) was just about to take off when we heard ths bg crunchng sound of metal. The plane sort of broke up n peces and smoke started to fll the cabn," Goltz "A crew member was strugglng to get the back door open. grabbed my wfe and jumped out when the door was open and we ran. We found ourselves n a sort of feld wth the co-plot and a badly burned man. We wandered around n the fog for about 15 mnutes and fnally were pcked up by some people n a jeep. On Nov. 27,181 people were klled when a Boeng 747 jumbo jet of Avanca, the Colomban natonal arlnes, crashed fve mnutes before landng n Madrd on a flght from Pars. There were 11 survvors. The worst crash n avaton hstory occurred n March 1977 when two jumbo jets collded on the groud n fog on the Canary slands, kllng 582 people. only to do more harm than good," Phylls, a group member The local chapter meets every Tuesday nght at the Peace Lutheran Church n Bowlng Green. "The frst meetng went to felt uncomfortable and cred, but gradually relaxed. The meetngs nave helped me wth my problem, and whle t's not solved yet thnk am on the rght track," she Group members sad t s mportant to remember that the reason for comng to the meetngs s to help themselves and not the alcoholc. But tme was ther bggest enemy. "We, Mark Dolan, charman last year, and had too much gong on last sprng. There just was not enough tme for us to really work on the project," he Ryan sad ths year, n conjuncton wth the Student Legal Servces, he hopes to set up formal talks wth the t^tfpntff and landlords to "talk and come up wth real solutons to problems." Many of the problems that stll exst between them, he sad, consst of msunderstandng of lease contracts and gettng repars. Ryan attrbuted ths to lack of communcaton. Along wth these talks, Ryan sad the Student Legal Servce and the Student Consmer Unon are settng up dfferent programs and nformaton to further the educaton of tenants and landlords. "MOST TENANTS are n the wrong and they do not realze t," he Ryan sad the organzatons wll be sendng out pamphlets to all students explanng the legal responsbltes of rentng and leasng. Mark Lange yesterday but sad the return of Amercan prsoner Robert Goodman depended on relatons wth the Unted States. Syra also accused the Unted States of drect nvolvement n the Lebanon war. Meanwhle, bombs and rockets slammed nto resdental neghborhoods n Chrstan east Berut from Druse postons n the hlls overlookng the cty. Polce reported two cvl- ans klled and 1( wounded by shrapnel. Syra's state mnster for foregn affars, Farouk Charaa, told a news conference n Damascus that Goodman, 26, of Vrgna Beach, Va., Lange's bombarder-navgator, was consdered "a prsoner of war." "HE S well-treated n accordance wth nternatonal rules," Charaa Goodman was captured after he baled out of the strcken plane Sun- Charaa sad the condtons for releasng Goodman, the frst Amercan servceman held prsoner n Syra, depend "on the development of rela- tons between Syra and the Unted States." Charaa charged the Marnes had become a party to the Lebanon conflct, sayng Sunday's ar rad "consttutes tangble proof of U.S. nvolvement n Lebanon and the onesded poston taken by the Marnes n the nternal strfe n Lebanon." Charaa reterated Syra's determnaton to fre on U.S. reconnassance planes flyng over Syran postons n Lebanon. n Berut, Presdent Amn Gemayel agan delayed a decson on whether to accept or reject the resgnaton of Prme Mnster Shafk Wazzan and hs Cabnet, whch was submtted Sept as. Phone users may get some surprses n Jan. COLUMBUS, Oho (AP) - Oho Bell's lne to ts parent company goes dead Jan. 1, and a utlty economst predcts customers across the state wll be n for "some real shocks." On that date, the Amercan Telephone & Telegraph Co. dvests tself of Oho Bell ana 21 other operatng phone companes as part of an agreement reached nearly two years ago between AT&T and the Justce Department. Oho Bell says customers wll stll use ther telephones as they have n the past, but there wll be changes. Jane Racster, Natonal Regulatory Research nsttute economst for telecommuncatons research, says some of those changes may come aa a Ve have a publc that may not know what's ht them untl January," she "And there wll be some real shocks." Among the most mportant changes for customers wll be one that may go unnotced untl trouble hts. Once Oho Bell and AT&T splt, customers who have been rentng ther telephones from Oho Bell wll suddenly be rentng them from AT&T. For most customers, the change wll smply mean an extra tem on ther bllsnot an addtonal charge. BUT OHO BELL offcals warn that customers who have equpment problems wll have to be more careful about who they call for servce. f the problem s n the telephone lne, t s Oho Bell's resrjonsbltty. f t's n the phone set. t's AT&T's problem. f Oho Bell makes a servce vst and fnds t's AT&T's problem, the customer v.l pay for the servce vst anyway. How can customers tell the dfference? "f you've got a couple of phones n the house and one of them's not workng, you can tell t's n the set," Oho Bell spokesman Joe Jester "Obvously, f you've got a one-telephone (dud of stuaton, t could be a problem - no queston about that" The dvestture also wll affect blls, although how soon the effects wll be felt depends on the Publc Utltes Commsson of Oho, the Federal Communcatons Commsson and Oho Bell has asked the PUCO to approve a $179 mllon rate ncrease that would rase the cost of a prvate lne from $12.95 a month to $18.80 a month. Jester sad Oho Bell s hopng for a favorable PUCO decson by Jan. 1. JESTER SAD the ncrease would brng Oho Bell rates closer to the company's costs for provdng serv- ce, estmated at about $25 a month. Bell says long-dstance rates have hstorcally subsdzed local rates - somethng whch wll not be possble after the dvestture. "We've been movng closer to cost for a number of years," Jester "Dvestture just sad, "Ths establshes deadlnes for you that you've got to get to.'" 3 2 bg rwws/december 9,1983 edtoral Castratng rapsts wrong punshment n a South Carolna courtroom last week, Judge C. Vctor Pyle Jr., decded to ssue an alternatve to dealng wth rape. t was, the judge sad, the most "horrble" rape case he had ever heard. And so the Judge proceeded to gve three young men who brutally raped a woman, a choce. They could choose 30 years n prson or surgcal castraton. The unusual sentencng was a result of an ncdent last Aprl when the men raped a woman for sx hours n a motel and burned her wth a cgarette lghter. Through the ordeal, she lost four pnts of blood. Pyle beleves castraton would be a just punshment for the rape. Whle we agree that more rgorous sentencng s needed for rape, we hestate to condone bodly mutlaton as a means to punsh crme. What Pyle fals to understand s that rape s not a sex act, but an act of volence. Ths fndng has been proven over and over agan by socologsts and psychologsts. Bearng ths n mnd, one may conclude that a castrated rapst may vent hs anger and frustraton by volently beatng up hs vctms nstead. And then what do we do Judge Pyle, cut off hs fsts? The problem wth Pyle's ratonalzaton s that he acted upon hs emotonal reacton wthout fully apprecatng hs judcal oblgatons. Pyle's emotonal reacton to the rape s understandable, but the sentencng remans a mscarrage of justce because t fals to address the true crmnal act - unabashed volence. Arrangers of dsplay deserve our prase t seems unconsconable to me that a controversal dsplay, whch some mght fnd offendng, could possbly be censored by UAO n lght of questoned plausblty to "communty standards." The fact that some people fnd the exhbt offendng s ncdental when balanced aganst the Frst Amendment's guarrantee of freedom of expresson. One would presume that when exercsed wthn an educatonal nsttuton that freedom of expresson would be weghed heavly. The dsplay was an attempt by concerned ndvduals to expouse ther vews dealng wth offensve mages of women depcted through the meda. The dsplay should be consdered as a valuable contrbuton to the free flow of deas that exsts n the academc settng of a unversty. t s dsheartenng that people are not more tolerant to ponts of vew or means of expresson that are dfferent than ther own. n my opnon, the coalton from Women for Women and the Task Force deserve a great deal of prase for ther attempt to educate Bowlng Green students on a subject that they vew harmful to socety. James R. Qucksr 110 Rodgsrs SLS board asks for support of legal servce As the end of December approaches we as students of ths Unversty wll be recevng sprng semester blls. A part of ths bll wll be the newly nstalled $2 charge for our pre-pad legal servce program. We are all aware of the tact that the pre-pad legal servces program has not become operatonal ths semester. As a member of the Student Legal Servce Board, we have all been very busy ths semester layng the foundaton for the future operaton of the program. Wth the placement of an advertsement n the Oho Bar Assocaton Report n the begnnng of December, offers of a pre-pad legal servce should soon become avalable. Presdent of the Prelaw Socety We're dsadvantaged wthout legal advce Next semster, the legal servces program wll begn operatng. The Student Consumer Unon strongly endorses ths program and urges all students to support t as well. Caseworkers at the Student Consumer Unon often see students at a dsadvantage because they lack adequate legal advce or representaton. SCU also sees many students msnformed or unaware of ther legal rghts and responsbltes. Typcal cases students fnd themselves nvolved n are; unreturned securty deposts, repar problems, D.W..'s or evcton proceedngs. Legal servces can help students n all these stuatons. The Legal Servces program wll also sponsor educatonal programng n the form of lectures, semnars, and nformatonal pamphlets regardng legal rghts and responsblty. Ths preventatve and educatonal approach s hoped to beneft the entre student body. Students don't have to partcpate by payng the J2 semester actvty fee but we at SCUthnk that you ought to. For one thng, constantly won money from my father whenever Lous boxed. For another, Lous was the frst fghter saw n slow-moton flm, and the graceful long swrlng out of hs body to the pont of contact wth the left Jab was smply beautful. Those flms made me an ardent fght fan for the next three decades of my lfe. But Lous' descent from fame was not graceful - so that Muhammad All sad he would never end up lke Joe Lous. Al has been a more ntense part of lfe n my own home than Lous was n my parents' house. was a graduate student comng home from class when my wfe told me to hurry upstars and look at our tny black-andwhte televson. She was watchng, she told me, the most beautful body she had ever seen - young Cassus Clay wnnng hs gold medal at the Olympcs. won some more money from my father on Clay's early fghts. As Muhammad Al, the man became my chldren's hero - so much so that my younger son had to leave the room, unable to watch any more, when t became clear that Al was losng to Ken Norton. (We dd not know, at the tme, that he was fghtng wth a broken jaw). Our whole famly went to the Baltmore Cvc Center to see a drect-lne broadcast of the Frazer fght n Manla - that epc of destructon, from whch nether man fully recovered. So t was heartbreakng, ths many years after, to fnd the rumors confrmed. My wfe and, talkng to our hero ths month n New York, could not beleve how the tongue had slowed, the eyes dmmed. Ths was the man as quck, once, wth hs tongue as wth hs fsts, the wttest andprettest of fghters, as well as the best. We, lke most of hs fans, dd not want to beleve t. But the facts had to come out; they are publshed wth sympathy n the current "Playboy," where Al talks about hs fears that hs bran was damaged n the rng. All our hopes that a black boxer would take full control of hs lfe and teach thngs to the rest of the country now seem blghted - are they? There s one thng Au stll may teach us, by a knd of redemptve sacrfce of hmself, nogcallv, fnd myself more moved by Al's mparment than by the death of other fghters - and fnd that other people feel the same. t s ungenerous of us to feel that way. Al meant somethng to us, and to mllons. But he s alve. The dead meant more to ther relatves and frends than All has meant to my famly. t s a smple falure of magnaton not to let ther gref change our vews of boxng. But, just or not, the emoton s there n All's case, and t should be acted on. Any sport that can turn an ncandescent human beng such as Al nto a dumnshngly majestc stumblebum s nhuman. t unmakes human excellence. t s at war wth the thought and health and lfe of ts partcpants, whch are slowly consumed before our eyes, for our enjoyment. t harms us, as human bengs, to acquesce n the harm the sport does to the performers. To attend fghts, or pay for them, or support them by watchng them on televson, s the acton of barbarans. The worst defense of boxng s the one hear too often - that t was a path out of the ghetto for men lke Lous and Al. The same thng could have been sad n Rome for the gladators who got taken up by socety. Others must de for our entertanment so that ther conquerors can snare our blessed company. Snce we wll not help the poor, we wll prase ourselves f one or two scramble out of the pt of poverty, over the dead bodes or deadened brans of ther brothers. Ths s not sport. t s savagery. f Al's condton teaches us that, then the damage done hm can heal us. Al's last loss of hs ttle was called, by sportwrters, the end of an era. f there s any decency left n our socety, t should spell the end of boxng. Garry Wlls s a columnst for the Unversal Press Syndcate. People nterpret advertsements on own by Tmothy Thompson Have you notced that people nterpret the world around them n dfferent ways? Have you ever wondered f there s such a thng as a "rght" nterpretaton? Some would lke to thnk there s a "correct" way of lookng at thngs - usually ther way. t would be awfully borng f there was only one correct way of lookng at thngs. That's why ths busness of beng a commentator s so much fun. To analyze dfferent people's deas of "what s out there;" to explore new thoughts, and the problems and prdes of cvlzatons; to boldly So... Beam us up Scotty, t's gettng eep down here. Just a glance at ths page yesterday revealed some of the many dfferent ways people look at thngs. The edtoral was dealt wth the msrepresentaton of women n socety (concerned wth the dsplay n the Unon), and we were asked to please not buy these "mages of women." No, wll not buy those mages. nstead, 'll nvest my money n mages of men as moha wked, tattoed, neon heroes, prancng around n panted-on jeans. Or 'll nvest n Man the Cowboy, ever so tough, emotonless, scared to death that he mght cry some day for fear of socal dsgrace. could always snk my money nto the mage of Amercans as materalsts, the "you care what you own" mentalty. f would have bought nto the mage of Amercan educaton that some people hold - that t s poor n qualty - then wouldn't have nvested n ths Unversty. t's nce to know that many people don't beleve or accept the mages that others mght try to mplant n us. Women and men can be releved to know that everyone has the ablty to dsagree wth the mages that bombard us daly. Now, how should we nterpret the "mages of women" that s dsplayed n the Unon? Well, we could see t as degradng to the femnne gender. Or we could look at t as art forms, as many people throughout the centures have regarded the female body as the most beautful of nature's works. We could vew the peces n the dsplay as a statement on the moralty of our generaton - and that moralty can be ether good or bad - dependng on how you look at t. Our mages of the same object can be dramatcally dfferent. One person's flth s another person's dea of beauty. Where some mght vew a phenomenon as a marketng strategy, others mght see t as a degradaton of the human race. do wsh that some people would stop tryng to tell me what my mage of somethng s. They don't know. My mage of thngs s personal property, and for someone to tell me what my mage should be, or to nsnuate that they know what my mage s, borders on nsultng my ntellgence. Ths s not to say we shouldn't debate and attempt to remove thngs we thnk are harmful to the thoughts of socety. Ths s to say there are some self-apponted moralsts out there who clam to know "what socety thnks," and are tellng people what they should thnk. Women should beware of those who wll treat them as second-class ctzens, and hope that the recent sexual conscous-rasng battles are workng - that more people do perceve an equalty of the sexes. t's unfortunate, though, that n ths battle some have found t necessary to support a negatve mage of men: man the sexst, the calculatng oppressor, the power- hungry manac who always must be on top, the evl beng who delghts n usng and abusng women. t's a mult-way street - there are negatve portrayals of everyone floatng around out there. We can always fnd negatve news of ourselves, f that's what we choose to look for. 'd rather look at t as people playng wth symbolc meanngs - and keepng laughng about the world rather than cry about t. But he had responded favorably to treatment, and alter consultng wth the team traner, Chaney made the decson to gy Hall. Hall replaced Charles yne n the startng lneup. Rayne led Temple wth 22 ponts and 12 rebounds aganst Drezel. "Granger (Hall) s the starter on our ballcub. He was the starter last year untl he got hurt," Chaney ''Rayne s not a starter and he accepts that. But Granger worked very hard n hs rehabltaton. He was even to the pont where the doctor sad the leg he had hurt was now stronger than hs other leg." "t was not one of our better efforts," BG head coach John Wenert "The fgure don't lke s the 21 turnovers, they were not all pressurecreated. BU (Boston Unversty) pressed us the whole game, and we ddn't have that many turnovers." Temple, not featurng any outstandng play-makng guards, went drectly to ts permeter shootng offense, wth Stansbury connectng on hs frst fve attempts from the feld and Hall pckng up the slack, the Owls opened up a lead at the half. THE FALCONS meanwhle, never led n the openng half, shootng only 35 percent from de feld. BG forward Coln rsh got nto foul trouble early, havng to st down wth three fouls and 7:31 left n the frst half. rsh fnshed wth only fve ponts n 26 mnutes of acton. "We just came out n the frst half and seemed tght," sad BG forward Bll Fane who scored 16 ponts and grabbed 16 rebounds to be named Oho Cmpany Player of the Game. "We were just gong through the motons and you can't do that aganst a team lke Temple. You can't let them get up by 13 or 14 ponts." The Falcons tred to make a game of t n the second half. BG pulled to wthn fve at wth two mnutes remanng, followng an rsh lay-up after a Keth Taylor steal- But Temple countered by scorng sx more ponts before BG could score agan. The Falcons traled 7344 wth only 34 seconds remanng n the game. " ddn't chew out any of the players after the game," Wenert f ' ddn't say much, just went nto the lockerroom and wrote on the blackboard, 'TOO MUCH ME, AND NOT ENOUGH WE.' thnk we had some very good ballplayers out there tonght who Just ddn't play very well together." BOWLNG GREEN (71) Mller, 34-12; Jenkns, 84-16; Taylor, ; Fane, ; rsh, 2-1-5; Booker, 1-1-3; Maleske, 4-0-8; Bryant, TOTALS: TEMPLE (71), ^_,«_ Coe, 14-2; McCoughln, McNlsh, 1-2-4; Hall Stansbury, 74-19; Agular, Blackwell, ; Rayne, ; Clfton, 044. TOTALS: Cg new J 'olrck Sandor Bowlng Green center John Samanskt has been an ntegral part of the Falcon hockey team's recent number one natonal rankng. bg news/patrck Sandor Bowlng Green's Bran Mller tres to elude Temple's Granger Hall enroute to the basket n last nght's loss to the Owls n BG's Anderson Arena. Celebrates bg weekend Temple's bg man Hal too much for Falcons to handle by Marc Delph assstant sports edtor The game plan was smple, all Bowlng Green had to do was shut down Temple scorng machne, all- Amerca guard canddate Terence Stansbury and a fourth straght vctory was n the bag. Rght? Wrong. Enter Granger Hall. The 6-f oot-5 Stansbury was unstoppable n the frst half of last nght's loss to Temple n BG's Anderson Arena, as he poured n 14 of hs 19 ponts n the frst 20 mnutes. But the Falcons managed to slow hm down consderably n the fnal half of the contest. SO THAT much of the game plan, for the most part, was successful. But, who would have thought that the 64 Hall would return after more than one year of sttng on the bench after a severe leg njury last season to score a game hgh 21 ponts? The clncher was that he scored 17 of those n the second perod to counter Stanbury's sub-par fnal perod performance. Hall's output was no surprse to Temple head coach John Chaney as he called hm "the most amazng human beng 've ever seen n my lfe." Add ths to the fact that Temple dd a lot of ndvdual "shuttng down" of ther own, and, as the 3,397 Anderson Arena fans wtnessed, the Owls pretty much domnated from the openng *H. We thought (BG's Coln) rsh was very mportant," Chaney "And we shut hm down." rsh went nto last nght's contest averagng 11.7 ponts per game, but could manage only fve ponts aganst the bgger and qucker Owls. Chaney also sad he keyed on BG's Davd Jenkns n the second half. That, too, was a huge success as Jenkns had only four of hs 16 ponts n the second naf. BG HEAD coach John Wenert attrbuted the loss to the possblty that the Falcons were overconfdent after comng off of last Frday's upset of Boston Unversty n Boston. Pont guard Bran Mller, playng steadly throughout the young season, agreed. "We're gettng a lttle overconfdent rght now," Mller "But, t's better now to lose (than durng the; Md-Amercan Conference schedule). : "We've got to start gettng out a lttle faster. They're a really tough team, a really tough team." Mller scored 12 ponts and dshed out eght attempts whle playng the entre game at the pont guard pos-. ton. Another of the few hgh ponts for the Falcons was forward Bll Fane scorng 16 ponts and havng as many rebounds to be named the game's Oho Company Player of the Game. Freshman Mke Maleske spelled Fane and rsh on occason, due to ;. penalty troubles by both, to score" eght ponts and rp down three rebounds n hs 14 mnutes of play. THE FALCONS, however, cannot kck off ther shoes and relax after ' ' last nght's game because they have - just ht the mdway pont of what : Wenert calls the toughest four games n a row he's coached at BG. The Falcons travel to Akron Saturday and '.:...n even tougher Oho State game on Dec. 20th. "We're gong rght from the fryng ' pan and nto the fre wth these next : two games." Wenert Samansk s Falcon cers' bg play maker by Jaon Dlmeo sports reporter n the three seasons John Samansk has played for Bowlng Green's hockey Falcons, the senor foward has never been the squad's leadng scorer. But, Samansk has emerged as a domnate force n BG's offensve attack aganst top Central Collegate Hockey Assocaton and natonal teams. The center from Oshawa, Ont. has proved to be a major contrbutor to the Falcons' past and present success. Hs ablty as an offensve playmaker and hs tremendous speed have helped BG regn as the naton's top team. "JOHN HAS been playng the best hockey of hs career ths last month and a half," BG head coach Jerry York sad "He has recently become a <V«Tnant player on the team." Domnant, he s. Comng off a mld scorng slump, Samansk talled three goals and two asssts aganst Oho State last weekend, and was nomnated as BG's Player of the Week. Samansk skated around and through the OSU defense 1 end, scorng and assstng on goals wth mpressve plays and precson passes. TAKNG A pass from teammate Dave Ellett out of the Falcon zone, Samansk carred the puck nto the Buckeye end, eludng the OSU defense. Samansk couldhave taken the shot hmself, but nstead, fed a perfect pass to Perry Braun, who put the puck past OSU goaltender Bob Krautsak n the second perod of Saturday's game. " thnk had a good weekend," Samansk "Playng a team that s natonally-ranked lke Oho State usually brngs out the best n a player." SAMANSK'S NEW lne has been an offensve threat on the ce. Samansk, and lnemates Gno Cavalln and Dave Randerson, scored fve of the eght goals aganst OSU last Saturday nght n the ce Arena. The sx-foot center sad he feels he, Cavalln and Randerson complment each other, whch adds to ther success as a lne. "'m more a playmaker and a r." He-aad. "ftty Jetrfc turnng over the puck, and they seem to be pckng t up n front of the net at the rght tmes.'' ASDE FROM from Cavalln, Samansk s the only other Falcon who has recorded a hat trck ths season and s ted for second n scorng wth Jame Wansbrough and Dan Kane wth 22 ponts. Last season, Samansk proved to be one of the top Falcon scorers, tallyng 27 goals and 30 asssts n 40 games. He fnshed thrd n the team standngs, nnth n CCHA overall scorng, and 24th n the naton n ponts scored. Samansk led the Falcons n power play goals wth 13, and was one of fve Falcon 20-goal scorers last year. He also set a new BG record wth seven game-wnnng goals n a sngle season. York sad Samansk s becomng a complete player, playng exceptonal offense and good defense. "John has had an outstandng career," York "He has been nstrumental n our success and seems to be determned to make ths hs best year." Season's Greetngs n football was talkng sports wth my frend Lenny the other day. Football was the man topc of conversaton; more specfcally - football foolshness. Lenny and came up wth a lst of approprate Chrstmas gfts for college and professonal football teams. The Notre Dame Fghtng rsh - 20 ponts to use n any game they choose. Ths mght nsure them of at least a 7-4 record ana make them more deservng of a bowl bd f they ever receve one agan. The Kent State Golden Flashes and the Northwestern Wldcats - A varsty bllards team to replace ther football programs. The Navy Mdshpmen and the Army Cadets - New helmets. Both teams' helmets are a metallc color, and they're so shny, after watchng an Army-Navy game, my eyes hurt. Both teams also receve 1,000 fans each who all have a good thck head of har. t bothers me to watch an Army-Navy game and see all those solders and salors wth those short harcuts jumpng up and down. THE TAMPA Bay Buccaneers ponts to use throughout the 1984 season n any of the 16 regular season games they choose. They'll have to sacrfce ther annual frst pck n the draft, but they should fnsh the season wth at least a 4-12 record. That should please ther coaches and fans, and then maybe they can take those paper grocery bags off ther heads and uncover the shame n ther tanned faces. The Houston Olers - A quarterback, a punter, a couple of wde recevers, an entre defensve unt and a new head coach. Who knows,...maybe the Olers would then be able to challenge the Cncnnat Bengals for last place n the Amercan Conference's Central Dvson? The New York Gants - A new name: the New Jersey Gants, snce they play ther home games n New Jersey. Wth the logc used by the New York Gants sdelne Mark D Vncenzo sports reporter organzaton, teams should swtch the names of the cty they play n wth ther nckname. For example, fans could cheer for the San Francsco Blls or the Mnnesota Broncos. The Pttsburgh Steelers - A wheelchar for Franco Harrs. wouldn't say Franco s gettng old. but at the rate he's gong, he wont break Jm Brown's rushng record untl about 1988 or t's a bountful Chrstmas for the Steelers because they also receve a new offense. guess they learned ths year that a team needs someone other than a feld goal kcker to score ponts. THE CLEVELAND Browns- Cheerleaders. Hey Browns, wake up and jon the 20th century. Who am kddng,... the Browns won't get cheerleaders. t would be too expensve for the Browns organzaton to fndpretty grls and brng them to Cleveland. The New England Patrots -Good weather and a new snow plow. Why s t that any tme after September the Patrots are always playng n ankle-deep snow? The Chcago Bears - A domed stadum. Why a domed stadum? Why not, t couldnt hurt? The St. Lous Cardnals - A new owner. don't know f t's true or not, but heard the Cardnals organzaton sgned a contract wth the Natonal Football League to fnsh n ffth place n ther dvson for the rest of ther exstence. guess that explans ther success rate. The Atlanta Falcons - Bbles and rosares. Wth all ther mracle fnshes of late, 'm sure they've worn out ther old ones. The Los Angeles Raders - Ther own cty. The Los Angeles Rams were there frst, and the Raders couldn't fnd another cty to move to after they were booted out of Oakland. The Raders must be pretty rude and assumng to get kcked out of a cty and then move nto another team's cty. 'd lke to see them try to move nto a tough cty lke New York or Phladelpha. YORK SAD the senor foward haw a great work ethc and has a very postve outlook on the ce. "John works hard at practces, and s the type of player coaches are lookng for." York " feel f work n practce my abltes wll mprove, Samansk sad "Hard work pays off. and t carres over nto the games. After becomng academcally nelgble durng hs sophomore year, Samansk started hs junor year n j top shape, dsplayng the mpressve form he dd n hs freshman year. " always worked hard on the ce - and wanted to prove myself agan, he " was really hungry to play." York sad Samansk wll be scouted by Natonal Hockey League teams and should have a chance to play at the professonal level f he mantans hs steady pace of mprovement. "Every player wants to contnue hs career after he graduates," Samansk "'ve put n a lot of hours and don't want to stop here." New Sports Pass polcy ads class schedule clash Bowlng Green Athletc Drector. Jack Gregory has announced a change n the tcket dstrbuton procedure of the All-Sports Pass last Monday. Holders of the All-Sports Pass wll contnue to have a 48-hour tcket pckup prorty, but n order to to assure tcket avalablty on both days, only two-thrds of the alloted tckets wll be avalable on the frst day of exchange. The remanng tckets wll be exchanged on the second day of the student pckup. "Ths change affects both hockey and basketball; and wll allow students wth class conflcts a better opportunty to secure a tcket to future Falcon home events," Gregory The Bowlng Green women's basketball team travels to W. Lafayette, N to play Purdue tonght. BG s 3-2, comng off ther thrd place fnsh n the Converse Classc. The Bolermakers are 2-2 on the year.
