5 The Creation of Harry... Harry the Hawk History When former Athletic Director Dr. Hallie Gregory ordered a grey and white Hawk suit, Harry the Hawk was born. While UMES has been the Hawks since the late 40 s it wasn t until the 90 s that Harry actually existed. The grey Hawk is now retired and fittingly now serves as the mascot to Holly Grove Christian School, where Dr. Gregory now spends his retirement as their Athletic Director. Upon purchase of a new mascot, the grey Harry will be returned to UMES for archival purposes. Approximately 10 years ago UMES purchased a maroon hawk costume that now assumes the mantle of Harry. In 2007, current Director of Athletics Keith Davidson made the investment with Signs & Shapes International to purchase a nine foot inflatable walk about suit. Big Harry, as he is affectionately known is the pride of the campus and makes appearances throughout the region. Along with the maroon Hawk, (referring to either as Harry is correct) they entertain crowds at athletic contests and University functions thought the Eastern Shore and Mid Atlantic Region. Harry even travels to the annual Mid Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament and several alumni events. He recently made an appearance in Annapolis in the state senate! Harry has been a part of the 2008, 2011 and 2012 Women s Bowling National Championship celebrations, conference titles in multiple sports and the MEAC Cheerleading Championships. Harry maintains a presence throughout the world via social networking sites and Harry s first birthday was celebrated on October 14 th, 2007 at Hawk Hysteria and his friends, including Sammy the Seagull and Sherman the Shorebird come back every year to celebrate.
