Making the Team: Qualifications and Tryouts Tryout Form #1: Informed Consent and Acknowledgement Tryout Form #2: Emergency Form Tryout Form #3: Application Form Tryout Form #4: Physical Form Tryout Form #5: Judging Form
1. Purpose and Structure of Teams Purpose There are two purposes for the Meade County High School Cheerleading Program. The first purpose is to create, promote, and uphold school spirit in accordance with school rules. The second purpose is to represent Meade County High School at cheerleading competitions and other cheerleading-oriented activities. Cheerleaders should promote leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, high academic standards, and good citizenship for peers. Cheerleaders plan and initiate activities which will promote student body and community support and involvement in the promotion of athletic events and other large school activities. Structure of the Teams The Meade County High School Cheerleading program will consist of two squads. There will be a varsity spirit team for the fall and winter athletic seasons (primarily cheering at football and basketball games, although cheerleaders may be invited to cheer at other Meade County sports events as well) and a competition team. VARSITY SPIRIT will consist of ninth through twelfth grade students. ALL MEMBERS OF THE VAR- SITY SQUAD WILL CHEER FOR BOTH THE FALL AND WINTER SPORTS SEASONS. The COMPETITION TEAM with be comprised of up to 24 male/ female cheerleaders. Alternates may be decided upon by the coaching staff. All cheerleaders have the potential to be brought up to the competition team. If any able cheerleader is asked to competition and declines, their placement on the Varsity spirit squad will be terminated. You must make the spirit team to be eligible for the competition team. 2. Cheerleading Guidelines Attendance Policy: Each cheerleader will be allowed 3 excused absences. Excused Absences with official notes (doctor, funeral, etc.) will be excused if prior notice is given to the coaches. The number of these types of absences will be decided on a case by case basis by the coaches. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated. Examples of unexcused absences are as follows: not calling prior to missing, exceeding excused absence limit, any reason that would not be excused from school, etc. Once a cheerleader has accumulated 3 unexcused absences they will be removed from the team. If a cheerleader is going to miss a game (for a good reason) he/she must notify the coaches at the beginning of the month (except for extreme illness or death in the family). The cheerleaders will receive a calendar of games and practices well enough in advance that they should be able to decide if there will be any conflicts. Academic Policy: Cheerleaders must manage all aspects of their lives, and grades are no exception. You are expected maintain passing grades in all classes. A violation of this will result in sitting out during games until the grade is brought up to passing. Your grades will be checked on a weekly basis. If you are found ineligible you will sit out a minimum of one game. If you are sitting out during a game due to grades, you must still be in uniform.
Game/Practice/Competition Policy: While in uniform, the cheerleaders represent MCHS and should act appropriately. This means no PDA (public display of affection) in any way. That includes hand holding, sitting on laps, kissing, etc. Act mature and responsibly when representing your school. While in uniform, cheerleaders may drink Sprite, water, or any clear liquids. You should not wear any jewelry and your hair should be in a ponytail unless it is too short to put up. For games, your hair should be in a ponytail near the crown of your head and have your ribbon tied in a bow. There is also no gum allowed at games. It is the cheerleader s responsibility to know which uniform to wear to games. If a cheerleader arrives in the wrong uniform or missing a part of the uniform, he/she will sit out for the game. If you are injured, you are still expected to attend games and practices if the injury permits. Inappropriate Behaviors: Cheerleaders are leaders of our school and are expected to exhibit appropriate behaviors at all times. Examples of inappropriate behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following: smoking, the use of drugs or alcohol, fighting, improper cyber use, ISS, etc. If something is brought to our attention that is considered rude, nasty, vulgar, illegal, crude, disrespectful behavior or bullying, a cheerleader will be suspended or removed from the team. Act mature and responsibly when representing your school. Parents, please be proactive in regards to your child s use of social media. Twitter, Facebook, snapchat, instagram, etc. have become a huge disciplinary issue for many teams. Please help by monitoring what they are doing. If you have any questions, please contact a coach. PLEASE NOTE: ALL PRACTICES ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. 3. Making the Team: Qualifications and Tryouts Qualifying 1. If a candidate earns a spot on the cheerleading squad, he or she must be a Meade County student for the school calendar year in order to participate. 2. Candidates must be in good financial standing with the cheerleading organization (in other words, there should be no outstanding uniform debts, bills, fines, or returned checks). All debts from previous seasons must be cleared by the first day of try-outs in order to participate. 3. Candidates must have turned in all required tryout paperwork by MONDAY, May 7, Required paperwork includes: Tryout Form #1: Informed Consent and Acknowledgement Agreement Tryout Form #2: Emergency Form Tryout Form #3: Application Form Tryout Form #4: Current Physical Tryout Form #5: Judging Form Tryouts 1. Candidates who meet the qualifications will not be discriminated against because of race, gender, creed, or educational handicap. All candidates should wear plain black bottoms and white tops each day of the tryout clinic to avoid any sort of discrimination or allusion to prior experience.
2. SPIRIT TEAM Try-outs will consist of THREE DAYS; 3:30-5:30pm at the MCHS FRESHMAN ACADEMY CAFETERIA a. DAY 1: Learn dance, sideline cheer, and jump technique. Monday, May 7, 2018 b. DAY 2: Dance, sideline cheer, jump technique, and tumbling evaluations. Tuesday, May 8, 2018 c. DAY 3: Stunt evaluation. Wednesday, May 9, 2018 d. COMPETITION TEAM will be posted online on July 16, You must first make the spirit team to be considered for competition team. Athletes will be continuously evaluated throughout all practices following spirit team try-outs. Coaches will consider skills, work ethic, attitude, etc. when choosing competition team. 3. Candidates who have not safely mastered certain skills should not attempt them during tryouts. No assisted skills with be counted in evaluations. In addition to the prior mentioned activities, candidates will also participate in conditioning exercises throughout clinic. 4. Candidates will be evaluated on each skill (dance, sideline cheer, jumps, standing tumbling, running tumbling and stunting for their position) in small groups on days 2 and 3. The evaluators consist of the cheerleading staff as well as qualified outside judges (for day 2 evaluations only). At the end of each evaluation period, the judges will discuss each cheerleader s score for the particular section of that day. At the end of all three days, the final score will be tallied. This final score will be the score used when determining the make-up of the squads by position; flyer, base, back spot. 5. Only a candidate that has NOT been selected for the squad may privately elect to view his/ her own individual try-out form. The score sheets may be reviewed at Meade County High School by appointment within ten school days of tryouts and may not be copied or removed from the school. Appointments will not be made until Wednesday, May 16, Any candidate currently participating in a spring sport at Meade County High School should NOT miss any scheduled practice or competition event with the spring sport. It is the duty of the candidate to make coaches aware of his/her involvement in a spring sport in order to make accommodations for cheerleading tryouts at least one week prior to tryouts. Candidates should not quit a spring sport in anticipation of cheerleading tryouts. 7. If there is a day a candidate cannot attend, I need written notification on the FIRST day of tryouts. Accommodations will be made for the candidate to perform that day s skill on an alternate day. 8. All tumbling skills are to be performed UNASSISTED and on DEAD floor to be evaluated. PLEASE NOTE: TRYOUTS ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. While it is highly recommended, tumbling is not required to make the Meade County Cheerleading squad. Potential cheerleaders are NOT to attempt any skill that they have not been trained to do. Skills must be shown during try-out for points to be evaluated.
Tryout Form #1: Informed Consent and Acknowledgement Form WARNING! Cheerleading is a vigorous, physical activity involving motion, rotation, and height in a unique environment and as such carries with it a higher than ordinary risk of injury. Be advised that serious, catastrophic injury, paralysis, and even death could occur particularly if a participant were to land on his/her head, neck, or back. I/We,, parents and/or legal guardians of who is a student at Meade County High School or a feeder school and wishes to participate in the cheerleading program at Meade County High School, has my/our permission and consent to be a cheerleader for a Meade County High School Cheerleading squad. I understand that all forms and a current physical must be completed by Monday, May 7, 2018 in order for my child to participate in tryouts. I understand my child will be evaluated by qualified judges and agree to abide by the decisions of the judges. I understand the attendance requirements for participating in this sport. I understand all costs involved in becoming a cheerleader and agree to pay all money in a timely manner. I understand and agree to follow the rules and guidelines set forth in the Meade County High School Cheerleading Constitution and Meade County Athletic Handbook and understand that violating any of these rules could result in temporary or permanent suspension from squad. I also understand that as a member of the Meade County cheerleading program, I am required to participate through both the fall and winter sports seasons as well as be available for the competition team. Failure to comply will result in the termination of the Meade County Cheerleading Program for at least a full calendar year. It has been adequately explained to us that cheerleading is an activity that carries a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participant and coach are, how many spotters are used, or what type of landing surface is used, the risk cannot be eliminated. The risk of injury includes minor injuries, such as muscle pulls, dislocations, broken bones, and scratches. The risk of injury also includes catastrophic injuries, such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing on falls on the head, neck, or back. I understand these risks and will not hold Meade County High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time. We understand that our son/daughter is required to be in good physical shape and condition and that the activities in which she will be asked to participate are strenuous and require physical and athletic agility. It has been fully explained to us/me that these activities include, but are not limited to, a variety of mounts, tosses, and stunts requiring the coordination of more than one participant on the squad and that these activities will not be confined to any one site or venue, but rather will involve a variety of sites and venues throughout the year. We represent to you that, to the best of our knowledge and belief, our son/daughter has no physical, medical, or mental disability or other limitation that would restrict her ability to fully participate in this activity. We have been informed that our son/ daughter must be examined by a physician prior to participation in these activities and we agree to such examination. We further agree to notify immediately the appropriate school personnel in the event of any change in our son/daughter s health status. We also understand that our son/daughter will be required to travel to locations off campus for the purpose of participating in cheerleading activities and that transportation will be provided for him/her by the appropriate school personnel. We consent to such school sponsored transportation. We agree to, and by signing this agreement, release the coaches, advisors, volunteers, staff, and administration of Meade County High School and Meade County School District from any claim of negligence by ourselves, our son/daughter, our heirs, executors, and assigns, from any liability arising from claims for damages for injury to our daughter and any claims for loss of or damage to his/her property which may arise out of his/her participation in this school sponsored program. In witness whereof, I/we have affixed our signatures to this agreement this day of, (Parent or Legal Guardian Signature) (Parent or Legal Guardian Signature) I,, am interested in being a cheerleader at Meade County High School. I understand the risks stated above; if elected, I promise to abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches and administration in the Meade County High School Cheerleading Constitution and Meade County Athletic Department Handbook and to cooperate and follow the instructions of the coaches.
