Erwin Middle School Library Spirit Week Theme Dress Days: GUIDELINES FOR SPIRIT WEEK October 18-22, 2011 Theme: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Monday: NO SCHOOL FALL BREAK

2 Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: YeeHaw Day Western wear like overalls, denim, and plaid shirts, but no weapons, spurs, hats in the building, jeans with holes, bare midriffs, short shorts, etc. Class Color Day Wear the class color t-shirt for the Powder Puff game with khakis or nice jeans; shirt is tucked in during school hours. Colors are RED for 9 th grade, YELLOW for 10 th grade, GREEN for 11 th grade, and BLUE for seniors. Preppy Day Sweater vests, button-up shirts, polo-style shirts, khakis, A-line or pleated skirts basically, the collegiate look. Spirit Day: Wear the 2011 Homecoming T-shirt with nice jeans. (shirt tails tucked in) Guidelines for Spirit Week Dress: If a student does not choose to dress for theme day, the proper attire is the school uniform. No short shorts, short dresses or skirts Shorts, skirts, and dresses cannot be more than 3 inches above the knee when kneeling. No exceptions! Tights may be worn under shorts (not more than 3 above the knee) and skirts. No spaghetti straps No crop tops or tube tops No undergarments showing No weapons No distracting accessories that could disrupt class No profanity on any items No suggestive materials No baggy or torn jeans No pajamas Hats may not be worn inside the classroom IF IN DOUBT, DON T WEAR IT! If a teacher or administrator deems that a student is dressed inappropriately, the teacher will assign a detention and ask that the student call home for a change of clothes. Powder Puff Game The game begins at 6:30 pm and is on the football field on Wednesday, October 19 Homecoming T-shirts Homecoming t-shirts are $10.00 for students. T-shirts are available for pick-up on October Upper School students will pick up their shirts in the Stu.Co. Nook. Check with the MS and LS offices about the pickup locations for those students. Pep Rally Friday, October 21 at 3:00 pm in the Gym. Students will sit with their classes to cheer. The 5 th grade will join us and will sit beside the 6 th grade. Parents and faculty can sit in the section beside the seniors and nearest to the entrance door. Guidelines for the Homecoming Dance on October 22 8:00 pm 11:00 pm The homecoming dance is for grades The proper attire is semi-formal. This means a coat (sport coat or suit) and tie for men and a semi-formal dress for women. Students may not wear clothing that is backless with cut-outs, with bare midriffs, or plunging necklines. The administration reserves the right to determine any item of clothing inappropriate. (Family Handbook) Students who invite guests from other schools must inform them of the proper attire.

3 FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELING DESK: Senior Application Seminars: because the process of applying to college can seem a bit convoluted and confusing at times, Mr. Hooper will be offering open seminars for seniors and their parents on Wednesday, October 19, 6:00-8:00, and on Sunday, October 23, 2:00-4:00. These seminars will allow seniors and their parents to drop in at their leisure with application materials and/or laptops in hand and have their specific questions addressed on the spot. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Mark your calendars for the 2011 Komen Race for the Cure, Saturday, October 22! If you have not already ordered your Episcopal Collegiate School Race for the Cure t-shirts, a limited number are still available for $ See Mrs. Conyer with questions. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES There are two spots remaining to volunteer at Rice Depot on Saturday, Oct. 22 from Please sign up on Ms. Conyer's door ASAP if you are interested so that we can let them know how many volunteers are expected. Laura Hildebrand Interact President IT S JUST A PARFAIT! I have just one question for the Lower School. What exactly is a parfait? Judging from the multitude of descriptions and opinions found in the Lower School Surveys, I m not entirely sure the Lower

4 School knows the answer to this daunting question. The infamous parfaits have been described by the Lower School as yogurt dumped on a tray, yogurt, yogurt parfey, fruit parfe, yogurt parfa, yogert parfai, white plain yogurt it looks like gravy, and yogurt parfait (basically a lump of yogurt thrown on a tray. According to epicurious.com, an American parfait is a desert that consists of ice cream layered with flavored syrup or fruit and whipped cream. It s often topped with whipped cream, nuts and sometimes a maraschino cherry. This is slightly different than a French parfait which Epicurious.com describes as, a frozen custard desert made with egg yolks, sugar, whipped cream and a flavoring such as fruit puree. (Note to Self: There is no mention of yogurt in either definition. Interesting).The definition goes on to say in French, parfait means perfect, which is how many view this dessert. Apparently epicurious.com was only describing French opinions about French parfaits. However, judging by the Lower School descriptions I received, the parfaits at Episcopal Collegiate are considered far from perfect, though not a lost cause. The main complaint of the Lower School pertaining to the parfait is presentation. As one Lower School teacher so aptly put it, Kids won t eat it if it looks yucky. So the real question becomes what is the proper presentation of a parfait? Traditionally parfaits are served in special glasses made just for parfaits. It is my recommendation that uh patissier (for those who do not speak French an uh patissier is a French pastry chef) put the parfaits in soup bowls and sprinkle fresh cut fruit on top. The uh patissier should also consider making a special parfait bar or station at which the parfait is made to each child s specific request. The second most common complaint pertaining to the parfaits is that it is served the same way every day. If the uh patissier would consider serving a few types of yogurt with a variety of fruit and nuts as toppings, the parfaits will most likely become even more infamous than they already seem to be. Once these recommendations are made perhaps the NEW PARFAIT CONTROVERSY will be What is the best yogurt fruit combo for a parfait? Dear Parents, LETTER TO PARENTS FROM THE READAK INSTRUCTORS: We enjoyed the opportunity to work with your child in the Readak Advanced Learning Skills course. We was impressed by the energy, intelligence, and commitment to learning that they brought to the classroom. Their Readak experience can help them achieve success throughout their academic years. Your child should now understand how to use the Readak tools in the classroom and at home. The goal is to continue the application of these techniques. It is important to remind them that the tools are only effective if used on a consistent basis. Parents can be influential in reinforcing the continual application of these skills. Three of the most important concepts emphasized in the course are: GPA: the idea of breaking down academic ambitions into specific GOALS, devising personal and realistic PLANS to achieve them, and taking ACTION to make those plans a reality. GPA is a starting point for any academic undertaking. R=R: the realization that repetition equals retention. The more times students revisit the material (repetition), the more likely they are to learn it (retention). The most effective repetitions are varied; for example, writing, visualizing, speaking, hearing, and explaining information (5 different repetitions). Active listening, note-taking, and reading: there are different types of learners, assignments and test formats. Students should take an active role in tailoring study methods to their specific learning styles and strengths, and to the purpose for their learning.
