Yorkson News On February 24th, 2016, everyone is encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize that we, as a society, will not tolerate bullying anywhere. Yorkson Creek has had special t-shirts made for our students and staff! T-shirts are $10 and part of the proceeds will go towards the Kids Help Phone. 2 Lost & Found We have several items looking for their homes. Please stop by after or before school to see if any of these items belong to your child. Items are located in the hallway outside the north gym and upstairs near the washrooms. Makerspace Donations As a school dedicated to providing students with the very best 21st century educational practices, we are pleased to inform you that we will be incorporating a Makerspace into our Yorkson Learning Commons. A Makerspace, as defined by makerspace.ca, is a shared space where people come together and collaborate while sharing tools, resources and knowledge. At Yorkson Creek it will be a space for students to collaborate, create and construct using hands on tools and technology. In order to make our Makerspace even more dynamic we are asking for donations from our families and will continue to do so at various points in the year as inspiration and student requests grow. For now we would like to ask for the following: Any battery operated electronic items (working condition or not, perhaps with motors) Partial or complete racing tracks for toy cars. LEGO. We would appreciate LEGO donations of any kind. Textiles and other consumables (popsicle sticks, fabrics, needles) Any items that are in collections (ie, collections of buttons, old cd s, small containers) Hand Tools that are in reasonably good condition (such as screwdrivers, hammers, wire cutters, staple guns etc...) Fasteners (screws, nails, staples, etc..) All items can be dropped off at the Learning Commons or Main Office. Thank you for your contributions and support!

3 Community News Spring soccer registration for boys and girls now open Langley United has announced that registration for spring youth soccer for girls and boys beginning in April has opened at Spring soccer is for ages U5 to U18 and the club also offers an advanced academy for both girls and boys. The spring season goes from April until June and it presents an excellent opportunity for new players to try Langley United s high-quality soccer programs in the warm spring weather. Langley United has the Fraser Valley s most highly qualified and experienced professional coaching staff and has an outstanding academy and introductory recreational program, says Arnout Stams, of Langley United Soccer Association, which has been offering soccer programs to Langley youth since the mid-1920s and is the largest soccer club in the Fraser Valley. Spring is an excellent time for new boys and girls to try soccer as well as being a good time for players who want to compete at the higher levels to improve their skills at our top-quality academy. Due to the increased interest in the LUSA soccer programming registration numbers are already well up from last year at this time. We recommend parents register early to avoid the disappointment of last spring when we had to put kids on the waiting list after we reached 1600 boys and girls. One value of 1600 registrants is that there are teams for every age and skill set. Parents can go to to register for Langley spring soccer.

4 Langley Middle Childhood Matters Committee in partnership with Langley Parents as Partners in Learning and Langley DPAC are presenting a free parent workshop called: Understanding the Pre-Teen and Teenage Brain with Gary Anaka on Thursday March 3 from 7:00pm to 8:30 pm at Langley Fundamental Middle Secondary School.

5 THE WEST COAST WOLVES Issue #03 February 2016 An Interview with Mr. Reeve by Eric Suh I got to sit down with our new principal Mr. Reeve to find out some more about him! Here is what he had to say Did it take you a long time to find your way around? I m still having a little trouble. How does it feel being a new principal at a new school? I m really excited to be here and get to know the community. What were your previous jobs? I was the Principal of Betty Gilbert Middle School for the last few years. Before becoming a Principal I was a Vice Principal at Aldergrove Secondary and I was also a Vice Principal at Langley Secondary School. Before that I was a teacher! What are your hobbies? I like to play hockey and basketball. I love going skiing and I like doing outdoor activities and having adventures. What are your favourite foods? Steak, seafood, pizza and sushi. Is there anything you want to change about Yorkson? Nothing! It s a wonderful school! What s your favourite part of being a principal? I like knowing students and what they like to do, and providing opportunities for students. Do you play video games? I used to play Pacman! What music do you listen to? All types! 6 Funny New Years Resolutions by Madison Khashan Most often, people make resolutions that are really hard to fulfill. Here are how some resolutions end up not working out 1. I am going on a diet this year! Two days later: this burger is delicious. 2. I am not going to watch TV for two whole days, but then the blacklist was on and I just couldn't help myself! Star Wars VII Movie Review by Ana Jimenez 4 stars The movie is about a girl named Ray. Ray meets a droid that has a map to find Luke Skywalker. In the First Order a Stormtrooper (later on called Finn) saves a prisoner that was the owner of the droid. They then go to the same planet that Ray is on. They meet and the ships of the First Order attack them. They escape on the Millennium Falcon that was lying around in the planet! Later they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca. 3. I promise to go to the gym today. I really wanted to but my bed was calling my name! 4. I will wake up at 7:00am today. I tried to get up at 8:30am but my legs fell asleep. Together, they all go and try to find a way to deliver the droid to the Resistance and find a way to find Luke. I'm going stop before I spoil anything else! The reason I gave it four stars is because in some parts the movie started to bore me. Also, if there were a few more lightsaber fights, it would make the movie better. I would suggest people watch it as long as they watched the other movies. There were many parts I did like and were very exciting!. A Short Fictional Story: The Fairies from Gena by Tina Yu Once upon a time, there lived little fairies who lived in a magical kingdom filled with happiness. But one day, one of the fairies, Eliana, suggested to Melodia that a world with only fairies was not enough, and they needed more creatures living in their world. Melodia brewed a large pot of potion. After she turned off the heat, she left the room. Melodia s little sister, Jessica, who was very curious, grabbed a ladder to see what was going on. The ladder wobbled around and it hit the shelf just above the big pot, and a jar full of blue powder fell into the mix. Suddenly, very large creatures crawled out of the brewing pot and took over from the fairies and they ruled the land! One day, all the fairies gathered into a small room, and they all agreed to get rid of the creatures and invent something else, but it seems impossible to get rid them. Then, Jessica got an idea! They decided they could turn up the heat on Gena Land so that it will kill the creatures all at once. Unfortunately, the extreme heat killed all the Gena Fairies too, except for Melodia and Jessica. Jessica felt terrible for what she had done, but it was too late. The sisters wanted to remake fairies, so they started to brew a big pot of thick potion. They added all the ingredients, except for one, the wing powder. Without the wing powder, the mixture made humans and that's how we became the way we are today!

7 Advice from Miss Know Everything by Karina Boganes Dear Miss Know Everything, There s this new guy at school and at first I thought he was really cute. I told a few of my friends, and now suddenly a rumor is going around my grade that I have a huge crush on him, but I don t! Of course he knows this himself, and so he seems to be making every effort to get the crush off him. He trips me into puddles, he gives me shocks as he brushes past me, he steals things out of my backpack, and I ve realized he s spreading his own rumor about me that I ve been doing those things to HIM to make others believe that we don t care for each other! Please help me! Unlucky Laura Dear Unlucky Laura, First of all, this is quite the person! He is probably a little overwhelmed that rumors are already going on about him. Make sure he knows that you don t have a crush on him and that the way he was trying to push it away was not done in a good way. (Though make sure you soften it when you say it.) You might also want to tell your friends that you have been put through a lot of struggles because of the rumor they started. That should help a little.! But if it doesn t help, your parents will most likely give you a lot of support, and your teachers as well. Make sure you don t go to your friends saying rude things, just let them know that you re a bit disappointed in them for letting your secret become a rumor. The History of Valentines Day by Ariana Lebedoff We now think of Valentine's Day as giving your valentine chocolates, cards, candies and much more. Have you ever thought about who or what started Valentine's Day? There once was a saint named St. Valentine. A common belief is that Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers, but St. Valentine thought this was not fair. So, he secretly broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. Emperor Claudius II found out, and St. Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to be killed. In jail, St. Valentine fell in love with the jailer s daughter and when he was about to be executed on February 14th, he sent the jailer s daughter a love note signed "from your Valentine. People loved the sweet story and began giving their "valentines" small gifts. This is how February 14th became Valentine's Day!

8 Mental Health Awareness Group Meets for the Second Time by Nicole Zhang On January 18th, the second District Mental Health Awareness meeting was held. Similar to the previous one, there was a lot of motivational talking going on with a counselor saying: "If we took care of our mental health as much as our dental health, we'd all be much better off! However, this time the topic of actually doing something was also raised. The adults there told us that "we're here to give you resources and help you but it's all up to you. Students at Brookswood Secondary held a bake sale to fundraise for the new hospital starting up in Surrey. The Yorkson Creek students in attendance agreed to also start something. We started out with many ideas but than narrowed it down to two: a mental health program (similar to support group) that YCMS students could attend and also a fundraiser. Details are still being finalized but stay tuned for something in the next edition of the newspaper! Book Review: Prodigy by Elise Domingo Summary: June and Day have escaped the hands of the Republic but then the Elector Primo is murdered, and his son, Anden, takes the crown. Is this a chance for a new beginning or will this be a repeat of the past? Review: 4.9 out of 5 would be my rating for Prodigy because of two reasons. The first reason is because the beginning of the book is a bit slow, but not so slow I didn t want to read it. The second reason is because Day and June get separated for periods of time (for all you Shippers out there, sorry!). I would recommend Prodigy if you ve read Legend.
