1 JANUARY 2015 Volume 1, Issue 6 South Cobb Students Receiving Big Recognitions Inside this issue: Valentine s Dance at South Cobb School hosts International Night 3 To play college football Wrestling takes a step forward Soph. OL goes national ManUp hosts event Clarkdale brings Game Night Amassing $1 Million is always recognized as a special feat. It is absolutely jawdropping when that level of money came be obtained in a short period of time let s say about a week. That is exactly what several South Cobb students achieved being recognized by the Posse Foundation, while a couple other students received full scholarships to Emory University. Our students are off to a great start, said Dr. Ericka Ijames-Wilson, the South Cobb Magnet Coordinator. The Posse Foundations is one of the most comprehensive and renowned college access and youth leadership development programs in the United States. The group identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Out of more than 1,400 applicants from around the city of Atlanta, only 61 students were honored, including the seven from Cobb County. In January, Consuelo Pereria- Lazo, Myles Parker and Myles Johnson made up three of the seven students selected as winners from Cobb County. Posse extends the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing these students in supportive, multicultural teams. Posse partners college and university awards with a Posse Scholars award of fouryear, full tuition leadership scholarships. Pereria-Lazo looks to attend Brandeis University in Massachusetts, while Parker and Johnson will attend College of Wooster and Syracuse, respectively. Dr. Ijames-Wilson said that was not the end of the good news for South Cobb students. In the same week (we learned about the Posse Foundation Awards), we were lauded the news that Larry Phillips Jr. and Edlyn Seraphin were accepted into Emory University in Atlanta, GA with virtual full rides, she said. We are very proud of these students.
2 Page 2 The Eagle s Courier Sadie Hawkins Event Set for Valentine s Day Love is in the air And one of the student clubs are doing their best to make South Cobb a more romantic environment. The Flying Aces of South Cobb High will be hosting their first ever fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 14 th from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The event is being billed as: Sadie Hawkins Style Sweetheart Dance. Sadie Hawkins style means girls will ask the guys to be their date at the dance. The event will be held on Valentine s Day in the main gym. According to Flying Aces Coordinator, Robert Byrd, the event is still looking for adults to help in the event. There is a need for chaperones, ticket sellers and takers. Also, the group could use people to take tickets at the door. The Flying Aces have already begun advertising the event and tickets will go on sale beginning, Wednesday, February 4. Money raised from the dance will help support the organizations activities which include a college campus tour during spring break, a Checkers Club with the senior citizens at Presbyterian Village and many other service programs. To contact Mr. Byrd, send him an at robert.byrd@cobbk12.org. South Cobb Teacher Pays a Visit to the Capitol - Courtesy of Ms. Fannin In January, South Cobb teacher Tiffany Fannin went to the State Capitol in downtown Atlanta to witness new State Senator Dr. Michael Rhett being sworn into office. Fannin exclaimed she was glad to be invited and had a wonderful time. I was so glad that I went. I was able to sit in the gallery of both the House and the Senate, she said. Fannin observed the House and the Senate elect their leadership and talk to other members of the Georgia Assembly while there. I got to speak with State Rep. Ericka Thomas and the Inauguration of Governor Nathan Deal happened later that afternoon.

Introducing King Cake Cappuccino Celebrate Mardi Gras with Eagle Joe s Cobb Schools Exceed 2014 State Averages For College and Career Readiness (CCRPI) Scores for Cobb County schools on the 2014 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) surpassed average scores for Georgia schools at all three levels elementary, middle and high. The Georgia Department of Education today released the third year of ratings under the statewide accountability system. The CCRPI measurement is on a 100-point scale rating the academic achievement and progress of individual schools and their school systems. Hot Chocolate and French Vanilla Cappuccino $1.50 Regular and Decaf Coffee $1 Hot Tea $.50 Local School Celebrating International Night What better way to highlight an area and school as diverse as the South Cobb area than with an international celebration. That is exactly what Principal Patrick O Connell and the Hendricks Elementary school are doing this Thursday night, beginning at 6:15 pm. Parents, students, friends and the community is invited to join in exotic food, games, fun facts and other entertainment. Students and parents are encouraged to dress in various outfits that shows off a country or people group you represent. O Connell says this is an annual event that usually provides fun to everyone who participates. WHO: HENDRICKS ELEMENTARY WHAT: INTERNATIONAL NIGHT WHEN: 6:15 PM 7:30 PM WHERE: GYM Our school Council is preparing for this annual night and they do a great job every year, said a school representative. As one of our feeder schools, we would like to extend an invitation to (the South Cobb staff) and families to come out and join us for a night of food, entertainment, and fun. Some of your students may be volunteering or performing on that night, so come have some fun. When the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) announced the College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) scores, district administrators noticed that specific information for calculating a portion of the score was not included in the released score for each Cobb middle school. Therefore, the middle school CCRPI scores showed an inaccurate drop across the district. The issue was immediately addressed by the district with the GaDOE Accountability and Assessment Department and is currently being resolved.
4 Page 4 The Eagle s Courier 4 South Cobb Student-Athletes Pledge to Play Football at the Next Level on Signing Day One of the hardest decisions a student has to make is where he or she should attend college. Sometimes the process is more confusing when the student is also has to decide the best fit to play football. These four seniors also proved that while they are some of South Cobb s best athletes, they are also the some of the school s best students. Seniors Malik Carter, Tyler Kendell, Khaleel Shaw and Henry White got to sign their National Letter of Intent on College Football s National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 4. White will play offensive line for the Morehouse Tigers in Atlanta, GA this fall. At 6-4, White looks to beef up the Tigers offensive front weighing in at over 325 lbs. He said what attracted him the most to Morehouse is the ability to stay close to home and a great combination of football and academics. White has earned a 3.2 GPA. He selected Morehouse over reported offers from Presbyterian College and Furman. White will be joined by teammate and fellow offensive lineman Tyler Kendell, who is also pledged to the Morehouse Tigers. Kendell projects to play guard, with his speed and quickness becoming an asset for the South Cobb Eagles, earning 3 varsity letters. The senior lineman looks to study hard and said how academics was a big part of his decision Shaw was excited to announce his decision to attend Davidson College in Davidson, NC. The receiver was 6th in the county in yards per reception and posted seven touchdowns in his senior season. Like his fellow teammates, Shaw was looking for a strong tradition of academics and athletics. He currently ranks 9th in the senior class out of 441 students and has an eye-popping GPA of Shaw will join the other 1,800 or so students on the Davidson campus in hopes of earning a starting job at receiver and a degree in pre-med. North Carolina A&T commit, Malik Carter might have had statistically the best senior year of any quarterback in South Cobb and Cobb County history. The senior accounted for over 4,000 total yards of offense and 46 touchdowns in his senior season. Carter dazzled defenses both on the ground and through the air, rushing for over 1,300 yards and more than 20 touchdowns. When teams loaded up the box to stop his legs, the senior took to the air, throwing for 2,700 yards and more than 20 touchdowns. Carter s competitiveness didn t stop on the field, posting a 3.1 GPA.

FEB 26 - Cobb County School Board Meeting - Courtesy of Shawn Carr The South Cobb Wrestling Team did something that no one outside the varsity wrestling locker room thought possible. The team qualified 10 wrestlers to the sectional tournament, which is the 1st round of the State Wrestling Tournament. Coach Shawn Carr s group is made up of many underclassmen and the group came away with two champions and a pair of runner-ups in the Area 3 Traditional Wrestling Tournament held the last week in January. The performance places all 10 of their wrestlers into the first round of the state competition, held the first week of February. This is the most amount of wrestlers South Cobb has placed in a single season in more than 10 years. Zaetwan martin and Urlick Cherichel won their respective weight classes, while Kardan Maberry and Darisu Caldwell took runner-ups in the sectional tournament. Other wrestlers who placed were Julian Suddith (3rd), Viktor Adenipekur (4th), Dwayne Watson (4th) Jimmy Davis (4th), Teyvon Spencer (4th) and Bobby Slaughter (3rd). This caps the season where the South Cobb varsity team went 14-6 in team competitions with a first place finish at the Crossbone Duals. This squad also finished third at the Area 3 Team and Individual Wrestling Tournaments. Eagle OL Recognized in National Game Some athletes will never get to see some of the top stadiums around the country let alone play in them. But South Cobb sophomore Chevin Kennedy did both last month when he appeared in the International Bowl on ESPN 3 a few weeks ago. Kennedy traveled 791 miles to Arrington, TX and set foot on the same playing field as the Dallas Cowboys. The 6-5, 370 lbs. lineman worked at guard and offensive tackle for the U.S. National Football team before facing the Canadian squad. Entering his junior year, Kennedy is garnering attention from both SEC and ACC schools.

This group looks to helps young men develop as leaders in the school, community and in their families. Captain Jeffrey Adcock, of the Cobb County Police Dept. spoke to the group at their last meeting and also posed for a picture or two.
