1 ANDERSEN NEWS Issue 2 October 2017 Welcome Day Success Another successful Welcome Day to kick off the year and welcome everyone back to school. Welcome day this year was very well attended and we thank you all for coming. There were many fun activities run by the teachers. There was great competition at the Tug-of-War as parents simply couldn t resist having a go too in order to even up the teams a little bit. However, we could see some parent s competitive streak in action too! The new football pitch was officially opened during the flag parade by children in the Middle School who were specifically selected for this honour. YEAR 6 s SUPER FUN ADVENTURE!!! By Aurora, Matilde & Georgia On 3 rd October until 6 th October, Year 6 went on a fantastic trip to Schilpario. Schilpario is in the province of Bergamo in the Italian region of Lombardy. Why did year 6 go to Schilpario? Well, it s because they could develop independence, learn survival skills and team work, and most importantly have fun. What did they do there? Some of the fun activities include: the adventure park with the zip-wire and the rope bridge, archery, making bows and arrows, team games (which year 6 were very good at) and trekking. Every night they enjoyed building a fire. On one special night they celebrated Clotilde s birthday party, they even had cake! Who went with them? Ms Rachel, Ms Veronica, Mr Fraser and Ms Danielle went with year 6 to Schilpario. All the teachers were The ribbon cutting taking place on Welcome Day 2017 A massive thank you to all of you who came and for the contributions made towards the food and drink provided. amazed by all the fun activities, Mr Fraser even went on the rope bridge! (The other teachers were not so brave!) We interviewed some year 6s who told us, Schilpario was so wonderful! We re glad they had fun and now year 5 can t wait to go! Andersen News 1
2 ASTOUNDING ACTION ON THE ASTROTURF By Jacopo & Alessandro On Thursday 5 th October, 2017 at 17:00, a match between the Andersen school staff took place on the brilliant and brand new, all-weather Astroturf pitch. The teachers were all feeling competitive and the atmosphere was tense. In the pre-match interview with Mr Matthew he said he was ready for the football match, was very excited and predicted the Rest of the World team (made up of Mr Matthew, Mr Ryan, Ms Alyssia, Mr Andy and Mr Jamie) would win by a massive score of 7-2 against the challenging team. In the interview with Mr Matthew he said I will play badly for the first five minutes I m sure but I think it will get better after that. However, during the first half of the game the Rest of the World team played very badly indeed. They were losing 3-1 and things were looking desperate. But then after a quick half time drink the Rest of the World team found their feet and started to improve their game and play like a team. Eventually the match finished 6-5 to the Rest of the World. Mr Mathew s prediction was way off the mark but luckily for him he was right about winning in the end. Clearly after the half time rest the Rest of the World had started listening to Mr Ryan. His wise words during his pre match interview started coming in to play. He said We will win as long as we play as a team and I promise to only do tunnels if we are winning. His further comment also started to come true as he had compared himself and Mr Matthew to Messi and Suarez. The Rest of the World team The challengers were Team Italy which comprised of Mr Stefano.S, Mr Stefano.F, Mr Ignazio, Mr Antonio, Mr Valerio and Mr Riccardo were feeling considerably less confident! Team Italia ready for the game! Andersen News 2
3 CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE COLLOSAL COLLECTION! An interview with Ms Dee about the Harvest Festival By Ruby and Vittoria How are you feeling about the harvest festival? I am feeling so happy and proud of all the children that had brought the food in because they are giving food to others that cannot eat. Banco Alimentare is an organisation that collects food for those who do not have the means to buy it for themselves. This is sadly an issue in Milan and so the food collected during our Harvest Festival means that many will not go hungry thanks to our support. Was it successful? Very successful and we had filled 7 box just with pasta! Who did you collaborate with? I collaborated with Banco Alimentare and Mr.Marcello. How much food was collected? 7 big boxes of pasta 3 big boxes of rice 3 big boxes of tuna and meat in tins 2 big boxes and a big bag of tinned beans 2 big bags of mixed cans of legumes and vegetables 3 big bags biscuits 2 big bags of baby food products 1 bag of dried legumes 1 bag of mixed items (oil, juice, salt ect) How was the food collected? Mr Marcello from Banco Alimentare came to collect the food from us. Having taken the boxes to the car we realised just how much food had been collected. Mr Marcello was only just able to fit everything in his car. It was bursting at the seams! Elisa and Valentina stand proudly in front of the food collection after their Harvest Assembly Year 9 Visits Manzoni! By Alessandro & Matilde On Wednesday 18 th October, Year 9 went on a trip to the Manzoni villa. Alessandro Manzoni was a famous writer born right here in Milan. The year 9 class went there because they were learning all about Manzoni and his work. On the trip, the children learned how to look at things in a different way, just like Manzoni did. This trip was very interesting because it looked at different subjects including Science, Italian and History. The Year 9s learned even more on the visit than they learned in class making the trip very worthwhile. Thank you to Mr Valerio for organising this interesting trip. Andersen News 3

5 Year 7 Visit Cattedrale Vegetale An interview with Ms Angela Flowers By Jacopo & Giorgia On the 17th October, Year 7 went on a trip to the Cattedrale Vegetale, 2 hours from Milan, in the beautiful hills of Lombardy. The hill the cathedral sits on was very high- they had to walk for a mile before they finally got to the top! The trip allowed Year 7 to experience land art right here in Italy. entirely from these plants and trees which are special to this beautiful area. In front of the cathedral, there is a lovely pond and there are beautiful views all around. Although it is very special, there are two other tree cathedrals; the first one is in Val Sella, Malga Costa and the second is in Lodi. We thought it sounded amazing and researched to find out even more about it. The structure includes 1,800 fir poles, 600 chestnut branches, and 6,000 meters of hazel branches joined together with wood, nails, and string. The Cathedral takes up 650 square meters and it took months to construct. It is more than 90 feet (27.5m) long, nearly 80 feet (24.4m) wide, and ranges in height from about 16 feet (4.8m) to nearly 70 feet (21.3m)! A fun moment for the Year 7 children was the We are glad that Ms Angela and the Year 7s had a wonderful time. Cattedrale Vegatale is a natural cathedral designed by Giuliano Mauri who was the most important Italian land artist, both within Europe and around the world. The Cattedrale Vegetale was installed in 2010 and is a memorial to the artist. It is the symbol of the Monte Arera Project and it aims to revitalise and highlight the richness of Alpine plants that grow in the Park and on the ridges of the Orobie Bergamasche. Therefore, the cathedral is unique because it has been made SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITY IDEAS Andersen News 5
