Our calendar of classes and socials is almost at an end with only the White Rock May Dance and the Fort Langley Whisky Tea Dance still to come. March and April are always busy with club socials and the Heather Ball. This year we also had the teacher candidate training and exams. I am confident that this talented class did well. RSCDS Vancouver Branch is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and skilled team of trainers. Thank you Fran, Jean, Mary and Rosemary. A few of the candidates also dance on our demonstration team so have ongoing technique coaching from Rebecca. Once again the Branch and clubs have put together a great programme of dances to share with everyone in Stanley Park throughout the summer and there surely cannot be anything more enjoyable than spending a warm evening in this gorgeous setting and sharing our passion for dance with old and new friends as the sun sets over English Bay. The last White Cockade included an article about John Drewry. An interesting local connection is that the rambler in Cumbria who introduced John to Scottish Country Dance was Hugh Muir, brother of Isobel James. I, for one, am very glad that Hugh took him along that night. The turnout of dancers at the Celtic Parade was poor despite the sunshine. I hope that a lot more will support our publicity endeavours for the much shorter Canada Day Parade. The crowds really do not care if you dance but they do enjoy the colour, music and movement. It would be great to have some children to help us distribute brochures and flags. Happy dancing. Jennifer Shearman 2 A MESSAGE FROM RUTH AND ALEX JAPPY Ruth & Alex Jappy would like to thank all friends and dancers who have expressed their condolences through cards, s, phone calls, on the recent loss of their daughter Maureen. Maureen played piano with Alex for many years both locally and in many areas of North America. Maureen was a talented Pianist as well as a Scottish Country Dancer and Ladies Step Dancer. She is greatly loved and missed by her family and friends. A private family remembrance is planned. With kindest regards to all, Ruth & Alex. Come one, come all to the Canada Day Parade at 7 pm on July 1st 2013 Last year we were hugely outnumbered by 50+ Japanese dancers in costume & 60+ Philippinos, some half naked, dancing to music from enormous amps! We need a BIG and loud Scottish presence! Please contact me to let me know you re interested. Then I can keep you informed of timing, meeting place etc. and have an idea how many will come. IT IS TRULY A REALLY FUN EXPERIENCE! We will be walking and doing easy dances and the parade route is short. Also needed: a loan of a flat-deck truck and driver or a pickup truck to carry bigger sound equipment. Anyone out there who can help us out? Contact: Cathrine ccmusic@telus.net Cathrine Conings 3

5 dancing news Vancouver Heather Ball Burnaby Spring Dance The Gordon Shand Band with Simon Scott at the Heather Ball L to R: Alison Smith, Graham Berry, Gordon Shand and Gordon Smith The excellent music of the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra, and an interesting programme devised by Rosemary Coupe set the stage for a very enjoyable evening at Burnaby's March 2nd Spring Dance. The dancers greatly appreciated Rosemary's concise dance talk throughs and the great sets of tunes provided by the VFO really put "life and mettle in their heels". Mark your calendars for next year's Burnaby dance, which will be held at Confederation Centre on March 8th, Gerry Stensgaard Vancouver Branch held another very successful Heather Ball at the Gizeh Temple hall in March. We had many compliments about the enjoyable evening, including music, program and refreshments. The Gordon Shand Band from Scotland, of Gordon Shand on lead accordion, Alison Smith on fiddle, Graham Berry on keyboard and Gordon Smith on drums provided music of fine tempo, great variety and thrilling tunes, to the delight of all the dancers. A hundred and forty-one dancers obviously enjoyed the band and filled the sprung floor during the varied program of eighteen dances. The evening began with a social hour and served wine and appetizers and ended with a delightful light supper. Dancers came from our local clubs as well as from Vancouver Island, Alberta and Washington State join the social occasion. I would like to thank Pat Hollingdale, Frankie Picherack, Beverly Robertson, Patsy Jamieson, Norm and Susan Haug, Rafael Quijano, Fran Hilier, Pat Cavers and Gillian Beattie for all their fine work that led up to the Ball. Thank you to you the dancers who filled the hall with your colour, enthusiasm and obvious love of the dance. Simon Scott Heather Ball Chair 8 photos Kerry McDevitt photos Rosemary Coupe 9

6 Glenayre 50th Anniversary Dance Children s Workshop and Dance photo Jean Wagstaff 50th Glenayre Club celebrates its year of dancing this year. Record keeping in those early days was not a priority, and so an exact date of the formation of the club is not available. However, the result of numerous phone calls to remaining forming members, old correspondence, photos, and wordof-mouth has led us to conclude that the embryo of Glenayre started life in The name Glenayre was the choice of early members who danced in the basement of the home of our first teacher, Greta Smith, who lived in a district of Port Moody known as Glenayre. On April 6th Glenayre Club hosted a dance to celebrate our 50th anniversary; the dance was a great success, with music provided by the Tartan Players, and the usual sumptuous buffet provided by our club members. Many compliments were received on the excellent programme put together by our long standing member and teacher Jean Wagstaff. Our thanks go out to all dancers who chose to share the celebration of our milestone year with us. photo Lisa Birrell The Children's Workshop and Dance 2013 was a day of fun and smiles. Many thanks to our support group and our teachers: Colette Hamner, Carolyn Hutcheon, Louise Murphy and Katherine Shearman. Also, a big "thank you" to Sydney Robertson, who recently started a children's class in Nanaimo and brought seven of her young dancers to the Workshop & Dance. Our Easter Bunny (Krysia Hamner) did a fine job of handing out Easter eggs to the tune of The Teddy Bears' Picnic. And of course a special thanks to our Music Maker! 7 Vancouver Branch Award Frances Caruth was given the surprise presentation of a Branch Award at the dance following our Love to Dance workshop on 16th February This honour is not given lightly, being awarded by RSCDS Headquarters in Edinburgh, on the recommendation of the local Board, to members who have made an outstanding contribution to Scottish Country Dancing and its music. Fran has certainly done this and most assuredly would have been recognized for her work sooner, had she not been a Vancouver Branch Board member for so many years and, while serving as such, was not eligible to be nominated. At the presentation, Stewart Cunningham read a poem written for the occasion, a copy of which was given to Fran along with the framed award certificate and a bouquet of flowers. Jennifer Shearman If anyone ever deserved a Branch award, it is. As Dance Coordinator, Fran is responsible for many of the activities that make the Vancouver Branch prosper. She coordinates the Monday night teaching program at the Scottish Cultural Centre and also the Wednesday night Program Class. She puts the Wednesday schedule together each session after consultation with other teachers, and somehow manages to give everyone their first choice. She coordinates several of the Branch s major events: the Welcome Back Party, the Betwixt and Between Dance, and the Love to Dance Workshop and Dance. Fran is also responsible for planning and running the Stanley Park dancing each summer. This important traditional element in our Vancouver dancing year continues thanks to her efforts in coordinating teachers, negotiating with the Parks Board, and arranging for equipment needs as well as wet weather cancellations. Every alternate year, Fran also manages the Branch s teacher training program. She organizes and schedules the course, communicates with Edinburgh, and looks after all the administrative details. Beyond this, she offers much encouragement and support to the candidates. To all the aspects of her work, in fact, she brings clear leadership, organizational ability, and sensitivity to the needs of others. Fran and her husband Sandy began dancing in Only four years later they were invited to join the Branch Demonstration Team, and in 1999 Fran successfully took her Teacher s Certificate. She has taught at the Branch ever since, succeeding Wendy Swaine as Dance Coordinator in From 2004 to 2012 she served also as an elected member of the Branch Board. Beyond her work for the Branch, Fran has also served on the organizing committees of two Teachers Association (Canada) AGMs held in Vancouver, in 2007 and She is recognized beyond Vancouver for her fine teaching, having been invited to teach at workshops elsewhere. Fran has special skill in managing a process of consultation and decisionmaking, and she has led several major initiatives which have helped the Branch to move forward. Some years ago, she was invited to coordinate a complex process of reviewing and redefining the duties of Board members. She carried out this task with great efficiency, leading a discussion in which all voices were heard and a consensus built. Fran also led the committee which reviewed the annual Branch workshops and suggested the current highly successful format of our February workshop. Not only does Fran excel as a teacher, dancer, and administrator, but recently she has become deeply engaged in traditional Scottish music. She is now one of the two regular pianists for the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra, a position which must require many hours of practice as well as hours of rehearsal. Her commitment to the arts of music and dance could not be greater. Rosemary Coupe 12 Love to Dance Scottish 2013 photo Kerry McDevitt L to R: Jennifer Shearman, and Stewart Cunningham A Poem to at the presentation of her Branch Award There s a lady among us and she s on the move - She really is anxious for us to improve, She works with our teachers and looks after us: Events run like clockwork with minimum fuss. This person s the author of plans good and true, In Scottish Country Dancing she s always on view, She began in the eighties - twenty years and more past - But her interest and passion continue to last. She was part of the Dem Team for many a year, Her dancing was joyous, it was far from austere. Teaching came next and there are many today Who think that her classes have shown them the way. As she got more involved she joined on our Board: She served with distinction the minutes record, Committees were part of the work she did there And projects she headed were handled with flair. So who is this lady who s served the Branch well? Who s laboured for years to make us excel? I m sure that you ve guessed it, for Fran is her name So do please come forward - I ll make our thoughts plain. Many thanks to you Fran a round of applause For all of your work it s in a good cause - The Board has decided an award should be made For your outstanding service it s your accolade!! Stewart Cunningham 13

8 THE RSCDS BRANCH AWARDS These Awards are the only formal recognition that a Branch can give to those who have served with merit over a long period of time. They have worked hard since before Christmas learning in great detail, twelve dances through which they will demonstrate their high standard of personal dancing. They have learned all the material in the teaching manual and spent many hours preparing lesson plans and practicing their teaching skills. The examiners will be Elinor Vandergrift from Seattle and Ron Wallace from California. We congratulate them on their hard work and commitment. We know that they will do well and look forward to sharing the joys of their success with them. None of this is possible of course without the support of many people. Mary Murray and Rosemary Coupe were the tutors. and Jean Wagstaff managed the paper work, the catering and all the other organization that a program such as this requires. Most important of all were all our dancers who came out to be the practice students or stooges as we lovingly call them. All together, you donated over 450 hours of Louise Steinway instructing photo Jean Wagstaff time in support of this program. We couldn t have done it without you. Thank You. Thank You.
