2 Frae the Chair I am glad to report that we have had a great season of dancing over the unseasonably cold winter months. December brought us the usual splendour of the Gleneagles Ball. It is always a pleasure to dance in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver s Pacific Ballroom, decorated as always for Christmas. Of course, the B twixt and B tween provided some well needed exercise and stretching - activities from which we had taken a breather over the holiday season. Thanks to the members who brought goodies, the catering crew headed by our new Event Coordinators, Sandra Anderson and Denise Cunningham, had lots of food to distribute at the break. So much in fact that the left-overs were sold and the proceeds delivered to the Union Gospel by Gill Beattie. Finally, in January we have just had our traditional Burns Supper, which was very well attended. Thanks to Sally and Sandy Marshall, who were backed up by a great team who sold Burns tickets widely throughout the lower mainland. A coordinated advertising push by Steve McVittie of the Celtic Connection to promote all the Burns events in our region seems to have paid off. Five non-dancers attended and I am pleased all were asked to take the floor and participate in an impromptu Flying Scotsman dance, which was inserted into the program. A shout-out to Alison Moen and Katherine Shearman for arranging that - and the rest of the program. At $55 you got a traditional Scottish meal, entertaining speeches from members of the Dem team, an opportunity to hobnob with the British Consul-General, AND dance to the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra - you don t have to be Scottish to appreciate the bargain for this annual event. Plan to take it in next year. Many thanks to all involved. I will miss the Love to Dance event as I will be in New Zealand, but I will be back for the Heather Ball weekend. If you heard Luke Brady playing in Fort Langley with Muriel Johnstone a few years ago, you ll know he is not to be missed. A quick reminder, that membership in the Branch is now reduced for the remainder of the dancing year. You can use PayPal on the RSCDS website. It couldn t be easier. We are working hard for you. Please do support the effort, the Branch, and the RSCDS as a whole. Admission is free to RSCDS members and full time students under 25. About 80 dancers had a grand time dancing to the fabulous music of Mary Ross and her band in a box. We had dancers from Bellingham, Seattle, California, Victoria, Newfoundland, and Scotland. We also had spectators from Nebraska, Montana, and Virginia. The feast that appeared at the intermission was amazing thanks to the catering committee under Sandy Anderson and Denise Cunningham, and everyone who brought Christmas goodies to share. Money raised from the sale of left over goodies was taken to the Union Gospel Mission by Gill Beattie. I look forward to seeing every one next year on December 28th. 6 Vancouver Branch Burns Supper The Burns Supper, coordinated by Sandy Marshall, Sally Marshall and Mary Anne Mackay, was well attended with 152 tickets sold. MC, Sandy Caruth, kept everything running smoothly. Gerry Stensgaard gave the address to the Haggis. Our special guest, Nicole Davison, the British Consul-General, gave the toast to the Queen. Sandy and Sally Marshall entertained the crowd with their whimsical approach to the Toast to the Lassies and the Reply. Gail Urquhart gave a very informative Immortal Memory. Tam O Shanter Burns Supper Left: Sally & Sandy Marshall & Gail Urquhart Photo by: Katherine Shearman Right: British Consul-General, Nicole Davison & Branch V.Chair, Heather Hankin Photo by: Peter Richards Katherine Shearman and Alison Moen devised a very enjoyable programme that catered to both dancers and non dancers. Music by The Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra was a wonderful addition to the evening. The Dem Team, under the direction of Kay Sutherland, performed twice during the evening. The first performance was a medley with music by the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra. The second performance, aptly named the Floozie in the Jacuzzi, surprised the audience with very different modes of dress. Hawaiian shirts and shorts were donned by the men and sparkly attire and boas were worn by the ladies. The evening was a great success thanks to the many people who volunteered their time and talents in various way. Sally Marshall Once again the Tam O Shanter Dancers presented a dazzling Robert Burns celebration at the Star of the Sea Hall in White Rock. The entertainment, as always, was varied and most enjoyable. The theme, "Friendship Brings Us Here Tonight" comes from one of Burns' shorter poems. Frien'ship makes us mair happy Frien'ship gies us a' delight Frien'ship consecrates the drappie Frien'ship brings us here tonight. In the final dance Amazing Grace, the dancers met and greeted each other as they moved through the sets in a continual chain of friendship. Special music for this dance was arranged by Mary Ross Klektau. The Tam O Shanter Dancers thank all the dancers from the area who support our event annually. 7 Teacher Talk 2017 Teacher Candidates M e e t K a t h e r i n e S h e a r m a n Katherine moved to Canada from Stafford, England in 1975 and lived in Toronto and the surrounds. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Physiology & Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy, she moved to Vancouver. Her parents, brother and new sister-in-law also live in Vancouver. Katherine worked for ten years as a physiotherapist and then began a second career with Work Safe BC, where she is employed as a Case Manager Specialist. She started competitive Highland dancing at the age of 11 and advanced to Premier level before retiring at 16. Her fondest memories include winning a gold in the Highland Fling at her first competition, competing internationally, and a sloping stage in Birmingham, England. Katherine was introduced to Scottish Country Dancing when asked to show mum, Jennifer (who many of you know is an avid SC dancer), how to get to the Scottish Cultural Centre. Their first class was a combined class celebrating Hallowe en, costumes included. The music, formations, and new friends had her returning and she joined the Branch beginner class taught by Rebecca Blackhall-Peters and Fran Caruth. Katherine has been dancing with the Vancouver Branch Demonstration Team since November By 2011 she had her full teaching certificate and began co-teaching with Fran Caruth at the Branch beginner/low intermediate class. She took over the class in September She has also taught at Youth Weekend West twice, lead the advanced class at the Delbrook Children s Workshop three times, and lead a ball preparation class at TAC Summer School in Colorado. In 2013 Katherine joined Shot of Scotch, an adult Highland dance performance team, and really enjoyed the return to Highland dancing. She is currently on the injured list, but on the road to recovery and contemplating her return to Shot of Scotch. In 2014, the Vancouver Branch 50th anniversary year, she was appointed the Betwixt & Between Coordinator. Her dance I Mind Hid Fine is published in their Golden Anniversary Collection book. Katherine joined the Executive Committee of the Teacher s Association of Canada (TAC) in 2016 and is the current Membership & Subscription Secretary. She also enjoys Ladies Step Dance classes and workshops! 13 From the left - Unit 2/3 candidates Michelle Fisher (Gabriola Island), Helene Nelson (West Vancouver), and Aislinn Kenyon (Abbotsford) working towards their Preliminary Certificate. From the right - Unit 5 candidates Karin Wagstaff (Kelowna), Sarah Kell (Victoria), and Katherine Miller (Cobble Hill, Vancouver Island) working towards their Full Certificate. Group Photo by: Kerry McDevitt Wedding News Isaac Callender proposed to Louise Steinway this past December 10th and they were married in Portland, Oregon on December 18th. The happy couple currently reside in Isaac s home state of Montana. While we will miss Louise dancing on the Demonstration Team and teaching, she won t be a stranger. Future plans are to settle in Canada. Congratulations Louise & Isaac! Missing from the group picture: Unit 5 candidate Sarah MacQueen (Kelowna) left, and Unit 2/3 candidate Diana Bodnar (Vancouver). Good luck to all our amazing candidates! If you have not yet discovered it, check out Fiddle Tunes & Coffee with Louise Steinway and Isaac Callender daily on YouTube. 14
