3 RUSTLERS CO-PRESIDENTS DEDE WEATHERWAX & ALICE BALDWIN CO-Presidents Message FEB 2018 We kicked off our new year with a wonderful 50th Anniversary Dance. Mike Seastrom & Charlie Robertson aimed to please and Bev Oren added a nice touch. The church was able to clean the floors before our dance; what an added blessing. A personal Thank You to ALL RUSTLER s that came in early, stayed late to make our dance very special for our guests. We had guest as far as Indiana. The comments that we heard will resonate throughout this year Sunday February 11th was the Sweethearts Ball where our own magnificent couple, Paul & Alice were honored. So, Rustler s let s keep up our quest for fun and enjoyment in the activity that we so love. Dede Hi Rustlers! You know if everyone came to the dances, you wouldn t have to listen to how great the party was. It was one of the best Sweetheart Balls that we ever attended. Paul & I would like to say how happy we were that you honored us as your Sweethearts. It is so great to belong to a great club. 4 Please note that we will meet for dinner every month before our fourth Saturday Dances. Please join us at 5 p.m. at the Marie Callenders s Restaurant, Brookhurst St, Garden Grove, CA prior to heading over to GGUMC hall to help set up for the dance. If you cannot join us for a meal or a piece of pie, then please come to the church hall at 6:30 p.m. to help with putting out the chairs and tables and checking in the kitchen too. NEEDED: SINGLES ROTATION TABLE VOLUNTEER(S) A million thanks to Vel Straub who graciously sat at the Singles Rotation table pairing up guests and Rustlers members who did not have a partner so that they could dance. She volunteered to do this job for more than six years. This meant that she rarely got to dance herself. It is time for her retirement from the table. Is there someone, male or female, who would like help with the Singles Rotation by either sharing the responsibility with someone else or rotating on alternating months? Rustlers, please offer up one Tip or more to dance with those who have no partner. This applies mainly to the Rustlers men, but women who dance in all positions are welcomed and thanked in advance. 7 Paul and Alice Baldwin 2018 SWEETHEARTS Paul & Alice Baldwin are usually behind the scenes, opening their home for Board Meetings, offering to help set up, take down, greet, and doing anything they can to make square dancing the great hobby it is. Alice is our Co-President this year. In 1991, their neighbors, Julie & Gordon Blackburn, whose daughter was a handicapable square dancer, invited them to learn to dance as more dancers were needed to help those young people. Alice gave every excuse that she could think of. Paul then said, Alice, what else do you do every night except go to sleep on the couch? Well, that was the truth, and the rest is history. They ve been members of the Rustlers and the Church Mice while holding many offices too. Paul has been in the optical business since he was a teen. His great Uncle had an optical company, his Dad worked there and Paul began in 1962 after trying his hand as a volunteer fireman and sheriff and then a reserve sheriff in Texas. He was born in Kentucky and Alice hails from St. Louis originally. As her Dad was in the military, she lived in lots of states. After she had a number of jobs, Paul was Alice s first optical boss in Houston, Texas. That s how they met! Their favorite type of dancing is Belt Buckle Polishing. When asked what that was, they said if you know real Country & Western, you d know. One of their most fun square dance memories is attending the 92 National in Cincinnati. They hadn t graduated yet and were on their own but were amazed that the Japanese dancers on their right who didn t speak a word of English and the disabled dancers on their left, never missed a beat! They have been bowlers and were on co-ed teams. Paul loves to hunt for deer and turkey and also ocean and fresh water fish. They love steak & potatoes and shellfish too. They ve got a bunch of children, his-two, hers-three, with 11+ grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Their bucket list included traveling and they did some this past summer. They attended the National Square Dance convention in Cincinnati, Ohio and then went to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, on to Memphis and finally to the Vietnam Wall in D.C. High on that list is visiting Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Alaska too. Alice & Paul have a philosophy of life to Live each day as your last-one day at a time. We d say that they are living life, with warm smiles & hugs, and a wonderful positive, loving spirit. Congratulations, you deserve this special day! Rustlers Roundup Page 7
