3 CFI REPORT CFI Report April /May 2015 It s been a whirl wind month here at the aero club. It is with great news that I can say Tim Johnson has passed his C Cat just the other day. He has put in a huge effort over the last 3 months and to see the satisfaction on his face once it was completed was worth every bit of effort spent by us at the aero club putting him through. Things are ticking along on the social scene. We just held one of the two competition weekends this year. Read the club captain s short report in this newsletter for further. Raylene is doing an excellent job and has organised a ladies day for partners/ girlfriends/wives to attend with strict instructions for us males to remain clear and unseen till 5pm. I think this is a great idea to get our partners out to the club and having some fun. So if you have a significant other get them along. They will be guaranteed a laugh or two and wine.who knows it might even earn you some brownie points for when you arrive home late yet again when you said you were going to be home early from the airfield (I think we have all been there). Unfortunately not much else from me this month as I have been hiding away in the back room teaching C-Cats so not a lot of photos or content. I will try for a more interesting reading report next month. Sharn CFI 3

4 PRESIDENT S REPORT Last week club member Tim Johnson finally found fame and fortune on the walls of Westport International Airport. His reputation and piloting skills are clearly known far and wide, as I found his picture printed in blazing colour in several locations in the airport terminal. The occasion was the opening of the new Sounds Air Wellington/Westport service. The district council and airport had arranged a grand opening, including brass band and sausage sizzle etc. Also organized was a kids colouring competition with the winners of several age groups got a free flight in Sounds Air s new PC12. Clearly Tim is the most googled pilot on the internet, as can be seen here For myself personally, the Westport service and PC12 implementation has taken a lot of my time in recent months, and will continue to do so for the remainder of this year at least. So I apologise for my lack of time around the club of late. Sharn, Raylene and the team have things well under control though! 4

5 PRESIDENT S REPORT Cont... The Westport project, however has been a pleasure to be involved with. The partnership with the District Council is a new and refreshing idea, where the community as a whole has really got in behind us, and their support and enthusiasm has been encouraging and infectious. Speaking of getting in behind and supporting new ventures, Raylene has been putting a lot of effort into some fresh ideas for club members and activities. The Ladies only Day on June 13 th is a great example, so ladies please get in behind this and support Raylene and the club on this one. 10 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW AVALON 2015 A number of people from around the Marlborough Aero Club have been to this show in previous years, it is biannual, and reported that it was very good. So John, Yvonne, Frances and I headed off for the last weekend in February. I chose an apartment to rent just opposite the Southern Cross Railway Station as this is where the public transport to the show leaves from. It worked very well. The Saturday forecast was for very hot weather so we decided to go to the Friday afternoon and evening show. Transport is well run, $18 return, hop on nice train for an hours ride, met by a fleet of non stop buses which takes you to the gate at Avalon. Going and returning was no delay despite the crowds. Great. $60 for the entry ticket and you are in. It is primarily a trade display so large tents for business displays and then all the standard aircraft displays. A lot of military, fighters and transport, old and new. We settled on the flight line, lots of room, and sat back to watch the show. Why go?. There are allot of jets which you do not get in NZ anymore, not that I am a fanatic but it was good fun for something different, F16 s and F18 s whizzing by! A B52 made a brief appearance and the C17 put on a good display. Check out the web site for more details. There was a 5 ship contingent from The Vintage Aviator there. Talking to the guys here at Classic Fighters (just gone) they were well looked after and agreed that everything was well run. The evening show was various aircraft with lights and pyrotechnics finishing at 9pm with a HUGH wall of fire, quite spectacular. Facilities were all good, food, water, toilets, space so we felt it was worth going and I would recommend incorporating it into a holiday, as we did, with allot to see and do, in and around Melbourne. John and I went again on the Sunday, catching the 7am train, to take in the static display s and of course a similar sort of air show. All was good. Alistair Matthews 10

12 CLASSIC FIGHTERS Classic Fighters- A club perspective What makes the Marlborough Aero Club what it is, is the people. With the big weekend just gone it was great to see so many members working so hard and willingly to help in all sorts of ways. The little things have to be done just as much as the big things to have a smooth and enjoyable time. So to mention a few by way of example but by no means forgetting those I do not know so well. John and Hayden working tirelessly in the bar, cleaning and stocking, when they slept I am not sure. Raylene, having only just come in to the fold, taking charge of the evening food on offer at the bar, an important part of responsible hosting. And the chefs, the likes of Dave Bishop, Noel Templeton, The chip lady, and the serving wenches,all doing a fantastic job. Meanwhile back at the club stand our 2 Young Eagles, Laura and Bryn, seemed to be there all weekend ready and willing to answer questions from possible aviators, helped by old hands Victoria and Karen and Graham, and new hand David. Captain Graham Stewart kept an eye on our Bristol Freighter all weekend while Marty and Al did what Marty and Al do. Great. Just a wee example of what make the club tick so well. So thanks to everyone for flying the MAC flag. Keep up the good work. ANON 12

14 EXAM TUTORING Classes start on Monday 11th May from 6pm to approx. 9pm in the Marlborough Aero Club Briefing room with Meteorology being the first course. Please advise Rhys or the Flight Office if you do not have a PPL Met book as we will have to order this for you. A Text book is $ The course will run over 4 weeks. $80 per person for the classes. 16 DUTY PILOT Cont... Thank you to everyone that has offered to be on the Duty Pilot Roster. If you are new to this please do call into the office before your rostered day and I will show you everything you need to know. Also if you are unable to come in on your day please organise someone else to come in. Usually with enough notice people are more than happy to swap days. If you are not able to come in and have no one to fill in please ring the Flight Office and let the instructors know I still have a couple of days not covered so if anyone would like to fill in those days it would be greatly appreciated. June 1 st is Queens Birthday weekend if there is anyone free on that day once again I would be grateful if you could help out. Once again a huge thanks to everyone giving up their time.
