1 JTC Recruits Badge WEEK 1 The Basics Your group can be a mixture of members who are new to the CLB or who have moved up from the YTC section. Consider your audience, get a feel for their level of knowledge and ask your group if they already know the subject. If they do that s great, having your members teach each other will make the lesson interactive. Discussion: Have them bring a notepad so they can take notes Go through the following questions: 1. What do L.T.C., Y.T.C., J.T.C. and S.C. stand for? 2. Who are your section leaders? 3. What is the Brigade Motto? 4. What is a patron? 5. Who is the patron of the Brigade? 6. What is the object of the Brigade Learn: The Brigade Prayer Grant, O God, That we may Never be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and faithfully to fight under His banner against sin the world, and the devil, and to continue His faithful soldiers and Servants unto our life s end; Through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen Activity: Tying a Tie Supplies: Ties Directions: 1. Hand out the Tying a Tie Instructions [found at the end of this document] to all members. 2. If you have access to the internet, there are great instructional videos on YouTube.

2 WEEK 2 Being a J.T.C. Activity #1: Shining your shoes Supplies: Kiwi black shoe polish 2 cotton rags A rug so you don't get polish on your floor A nylon An hour Prep: 1. Have the members get out of uniform and put down garbage bags in their area where they will be shining their boots 2. Becoming a J.T.C. means a set of new privileges and responsibilities. It s important to describe what your expectations are for behavior, presentation, and participation. This is also a great time to highlight the perks to being in their new section. 3. Start off by demonstrating to the group how to shine their shoes. Then have members try it on their own boots. As they are shining their boots have a good discuss about the following material. Follow the instructions found at the end of this document to instruct your group. Activity #2: Inspection Explain that each week they will be graded on their turn out. How should their uniform look? o Free of wrinkles o Clean o Proper placement of badges o Their shoes should be shiny Next explain that the inspection marks will be used for deciding awards and promotions What is the rank structure for the J.T.C. Section? o Pte. No rank chevrons o Junior L/Cp- 1 rank Chevrons o Junior Cp- 2 rank Chevrons Now is also a good time to note that badge work, behavior, inspections, and attendance are all taken into consideration for promotions and awards. Members may also be awarded good conduct chevrons and are eligible for the J.T.C. medal one of the most prestigious awards in the Brigade

3 WEEK 3 History and Structure Prep work: please use the new organizational chart, or speak with your Battalion Commander and/or Regimental Commander on what points to discuss in this section. Discussion: What are the different levels within our organization and what each level is responsible for. Who is your company commander? Who is the company chaplain? As an organization we have a vibrant, long and rich history. Passing that history on it s an important part of what we do. Where was the Brigade founded? England Who was the founder of the Brigade?- Sir Walter Mallock Gee When did the Brigade come to Newfoundland? 1982 How old is the Brigade? Who brought the Brigade to Newfoundland? Harold Blackler WEEK 4 Putting Skills to work Arrange to have the group tour the Museum located in Headquarters. This could be done during a sports tournament or during one of the Battalion parades if arrangements cannot be made during a regular parade night.

4 Shoe Shining Instructions

5 Step 1: Put 1 finger in the rag and wrap it around your finger like shown. then you rub your finger in the polish and get a good amount on the rag. Step 2: Now you rub your finger in circles on the boots. Make sure you don't make your circles to big and there should be like a dark layer on the boot. Wait about 3 minutes before the next step so the polish can dry.

6 Step 3: Now you take your 2nd rag and wrap it around your fingers like you were polishing. Then you do small circles like the last step and take the excess polish. Now you repeat this till you got your boot as shiny as you want it. Tip: Every 3rd polish, take the nylon and buff it. It takes off the extra polish and gives it a nice shine. TYING A TIE
