Circle n Squares Workshop Hosts October 2 -- DiAnn Usher / Eric Hollowell October 9 -- Jim and Joan Palmieri October Workshop Hosts October 16 Patty and Evan Griffith October 23 COMMITTEE Pie Night October 30 Halloween Red Light/Green Light Jeanne and GW Lawson On the Mend Nancy Azevedo is recovering from gall bladder surgery and is doing very well. We should see her back out on Thursday night, but she may not be dancing quite yet. Jim Bossaller is recovering from back surgery. Jim reports that he is feeling much better without the pain he had been experiencing in his back. His surgery was a little more extensive than first expected, but hopefully the doctor was able to get Jim set for many more years of pain-free dancing and vacationing!! Sunshine usually makes us feel better warm and cozy often healthy and happy and that is what our Sunshine person s role is to share warmth and happiness -- send cards or whatever is appropriate for a situation concerning one of our members. So, if you or someone else you know in the Club (or close associates from a neighboring club) are under the weather, have suffered the loss of a loved one, are having surgery, or whatever, please let our Sunshine Chair Patty Griffiths -- know so we can get a card or something out to that person and/or their family. Patty s Phone Number is: (707) The President s Corner Submitted by: Tom Woodard We are all very pleased with the turn-out we have had of new dancers. Everyone seems to be picking up the lessons quite well. Just for all of you who might be wondering about how you are doing I was probably (I can hear the Club members as I write this saying probably??? ) the worst at learning that the Club has had. So, a word to the wise pay attention or they might make you be the Club President!! Just kidding, of course. I would also like to let our Club members know how proud I am of all of you for coming out and dancing with our beginners and being such great angels. It really helps to have you in the squares, dancing with our newer dancers, and being so gracious about it. You are awesome!! Board Members: In preparation for our upcoming Board Meeting October please get any topics you would like added to the agenda to me by the 10 th of October. We will try get it all covered. 3

Exhibition Dancers Needed News of the World and Beyond Submitted by: Steve Minkin I am looking for dancers who would like to do some exhibition dancing at the Harvest Hoedown at the Vintage Sonoma Senior Living Center on Saturday, October 25, from 2-4 p.m. This is a family event with a BBQ lunch. I will have a sign-up sheet at workshop if you would like to sign-up to dance. Should be fun!! Walnut Squares Recipe Submitted by: JoAnne Schlegel JoAnne Schlegel took Walnut Squares to a recent Pinochle party and was asked by many there for the recipe. She offered to send it to us to put in the newsletter so everyone interested could snag a copy. Sounds like they were delicious!! Editorial Note: This would be a great addition to a Pie Night if anyone wants to try the recipe. Thanks, JoAnne, we will have to give them a try!! Walnut Squares Recipe from JoAnne Schlegel Grease an 8-inch pan or spray with cooking spray. (I use butter) Beat until foamy: 1 egg Beat in: ½ teaspoon vanilla Add ½ cup flour ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking soda Mix in: 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup brown sugar (Be sure to measure by pressing brown sugar into measuring cup with the back of a spoon until no more can be pressed in.) Bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes (You ll have to experiment here. I baked a double recipe in a 9 x 13 inch pan for 30 minutes. But you may need less time for a smaller amount.) When you put the batter into the pan it is dry and you ll have to press it around until it fills the whole bottom of the pan. Another Northern Exposure Well, I enjoyed another fishing trip on Alaska s Kenai River with my brother Jack, who lives in Chico, from September 15 September 21. We caught lots of fish even though it rained 3 of the 4 days we fished. Submitted by: Tom Woodard The fall colors were beautiful lots of gold and red and wild flowers everywhere. Check out this beautiful fish I caught!! 4

50 th Class Reunion Submitted by: JoAnne Schlegel The last weekend in July I attended my 50 th high school reunion in Redondo Beach, CA. Harold stayed home as he has no interest in playing remember when with people he d never seen. On the Wednesday before the reunion I drove to Bakersfield and had dinner and a short visit with my granddaughter, before going on to Santa Clarita where I stayed a few days with a high school classmate, Carmela Billings. Her brother was one of the two people I walked in memory of last year when I walked on the 3-Day Walk with Patty in Minneapolis. Carmela took off from work Thursday, Friday, and Monday, so we had a 5-day vacation together. It s amazing how much we enjoyed each other and our time together. Although we were great friends in high school, we have barely communicated over the past 50 years and even lost contact with each other for many years. On Thursday we went through my high school year-books to try to remember our classmates that we expected to see Saturday. Amazing how many we forgot, and I was in the same school system for 12 years, and many of them were too! Carmela also took me on a tour of Santa Clarita. It has a small-town atmosphere with a cowboy theme, even though it s on the edge of metropolitan Los Angeles area. Friday Carmela had arranged for a tour of the Nethercutt Museum. There are two museums, across the street from each other in San Sylmar. Both are free and one is open to walk in any time during business hours. The other you need to make reservations for their docent-guided tour. J.B. Nethercutt and his mother Merle Norman started and owned Merle Norman Cosmetics. With his share of the profits J.B. bought antique and classic cars and had them restored to like-new condition, over 200 of them! Most are displayed in the open museum but the ones across the street are in an elegant surrounding designed to look like a car showroom of the 30s with marble floors and columns and lots of mirrors. If you like beautiful old cars, arrange for a tour next time you re in LA. Also on the tour, upstairs from the cars, are the Nethercutt s collection of rare musical instruments, player pianos, Orchestrions, and the second largest Grand Wurlitzer theater organ in the world. They have the organ linked to a large grand piano and by themselves (without people playing them) the two instruments played Ghost Riders in the Sky. Orchestrions are like huge music boxes with real instruments in them that are played by something like piano rolls. Fascinating! I wish the tour had been twice as long. To the right, I am pretending to play Ghost Riders in the Sky. On the far right are some of the organ pipes. Saturday was Class Reunion Day. We drove to Manhattan Beach and attended the All-Class Reunion at a park. In addition to many students from my class and others, three teachers also This picture is of an Orchestrion. This one is about 8 feet high and 6 feet wide. 5

attended and I had had all three. Two of them remembered me but the one who didn t was probably the teacher who had the most influence on me, my freshman English teacher. That evening we went to the 50 th reunion of the Class of 1964 in Redondo Beach. It was great fun. A favorite moment for me was when I told Paulette Bundy about the first time I had seen her. We were in 7 th grade. She had attended the other intermediate school and we had a track meet. I had been practicing the high jump and had been doing pretty well for a girl with short legs. Anyway, Paulette saw the high jump and asked how to do it. We showed her how to do the scissor-kick jump and then she won the event! After I said this to her, she said that event that day was one of the highlights of her life. The evening was full of moments like that. You ll notice in the mural to the right that Aviation High School only existed for 25 years. By 1982 the majority of baby boomers had gone through high school and the need for a third high school in the area was reduced. TRW wanted the land the school was on and offered the school district so much money that they couldn t resist. The school has been torn down except for the sports facilities and theater. Bon Jour and more Submitted by Tom and Jan Woodard Jan and Tom Woodard took a wonderful two week trip to Enchanting Europe in August. We toured London, Amsterdam, Holland, Koblenz and Munich, Germany, Salzburg, Vienna, and Innsbruck, Austria, Liechtenstein, Lucerne, Switzerland, the Black Forest, Germany, Strasbourg, and Paris, France. Great trip!! Branson, Missouri Last week Dawn, myself, and our two youngest sons went to Branson, Missouri, on vacation. We had a great time taking in a few shows, checking out the Ozark s, and trying our best to beat our sons at shuffle board. We would certainly recommend that everyone give this tourist destination a visit. It definitely has a Western feel to many of the shows, and Silver Dollar City had an Old West Festival that featured trades of days gone by. Submitted by: Dale Reitz We bridged 30 years of music by going to a Sawyer Brown concert and a Beatles Tribute. All and all, a good time was had by all and it was great to spend time with our sons. 6

2015 Hoedown Schedule for the Circle n Squares If you want to mark your calendars so you are sure to save the dates, here is our hoedown schedule for the coming year I know we often have many things going on in our lives family, travel, business trips, and more and it is easy to put something on a weekend when we are hosting a hoedown. So, in an effort to help with the calendar planning, I thought we would get the schedule out to you early so you can save the dates. Date Caller Cuer January 10 Jet Roberts Dan Drumheller March 14 Lawrence Johnstone Jeanne Van Blarcom April 11 Gary Kendall Jeanne Van Blarcom July 11 Andy Allemao Bob Ensten August 9 Joe Saltel Jeanne Van Blarcom September 8 Mike Haworth Bob Ensten Getting to Know You Submitted by: Patty Green The next few pages are a new feature for our monthly newsletter called Getting to Know You where we will highlight one or two individuals or couples each month in an effort to learn more about each other. I had thought about this for a while, but was moved to action by a comment Larry Wofford made about how much he enjoyed hearing about the things folks were doing (vacations, etc.) because it helped to get to know a little more about them. Thanks Larry!! We will build a binder of club members as we go along, putting our profile pages together, and keep it in the cupboard. So I ll be calling on each of you in the future. 7

Getting to Know You!! Name: Jim and Carole Bossaller City / State / Zip: Rohnert Park, CA Birthday(s): Carole December 22 Jim -- May 23 Anniversary: November 27, 1976 Where were you each born and raised? Carole was born in Chicago and lived in suburbs of Chicago Rollings Meadows / Arlington Heights area -- growing up, until her family moved to California in search of a better climate for her mother s health. Here she went to college and met her first husband. He entered the Army and was with a helicopter team, so they did quite a bit of moving around to different training areas. The travel, moving, and Army life was difficult on the young family and they eventually separated, leaving Carole with two young daughters to raise, as well as be the head of household for her family. She moved back to the Bay Area, closer to family to raise her girls. Meanwhile, Jim was born in Inglewood, CA, with his family moving to St. Louis, Missouri for a time, and then back to Lawndale, California. At 17 ½, Jim joined the Air Force and attended Basic Training in Texas and Tech School in Illinois, before being stationed in New Hampshire. Jim was married at 18, moved to Los Angeles, and then to Colorado Springs with his young family. He had taken a job with Hewlett-Packard as an Electrical Engineer working at The Springs. Jim s marriage unraveled and he moved back to California, still with Hewlett-Packard, and went to work at the Sunnyvale facility. Jim had 3 children 2 boys and a girl. How did you meet? Both Jim and Carole were taking care of their families, but were also looking to meet others their age and continue their lives. They met, by chance, at a Parents Without Partners dance. Jim said he was able to monopolized quite a bit of Carole s time that evening and wanted to take her out after the dance, but Carole had to get home to her daughters who were staying with a sitter. This was to be the story for quite some time. Jim would ask Carole out, but she was really busy with raising her daughters, working at a full time job, and going to school. Whew!! But, Jim was persistent and continued to call and ask Carole out. Though it was difficult, they started to carve out some time together, with Jim helping Carole out by picking up her girls from the sitter, helping with car repairs, and really showing her his interest and caring. Carole was working at B of A and Jim would choose her window to do his banking, and they would meet for lunch at HP too. They continued dating for about a year before getting married and merging their families starting their married life with 5 children. 8

How long have you been married or been together? Jim and Carole have been married 38 years now, and have successfully raised their 5 children, seeing each marry and start a family of their own. One key to their successful marriage is that they have always reserved Friday night as their date night. Now, in retirement, they have more choices for their date night, but love sticking with their Friday tradition whenever possible. Do you have grandchildren? Jim and Carole are blessed with eleven (11) grandchildren, whom they adore. They are really enjoying their role as grandparents, often picking children up from school or other events, babysitting, and traveling to visit. Do your children live nearby? Son, Jeff, lives in Petaluma with his wife and 2 children, Adriana and Garett; Cindy lives in Sacramento with her husband and 3 daughters, Lexus, Mercedes, and Payton; Jennifer lives in San Jose with her husband and 2 children, Mikaylee and Kylee; Colleen lives in San Antonio, TX, with her husband and 2 children, Jake and Kate; and, James lives in Houston, TX, with his wife and their children Ashley and Andy. Have you always lived in the Santa Rosa area? Since marrying, Jim and Carole have lived in the Santa Rosa area, transferring up from Sunnyvale to work at the Hewlett-Packard here in Santa Rosa. How long have you been square dancing? Where did you start dancing? An initial introduction to square dancing with a Rohnert Park club at the Burton Avenue Community Center left Jim and Carole disenchanted with square dancing. But a little while later they attended an event at the Fairgrounds and were re-introduced to square dancing by/with the Circle n Squares. This time it was a much better fit, and they have been dancing with the Club since the early 90 s. (As it turned out, Carole s sister had squared danced earlier, in the Bay Area, but it just had not clicked for Jim and Carole until this moment) What is a favorite square dance or hoedown you have attended? Special square dance event? With their strong family involvement, Jim and Carole don t go to too many large square dance events, but remember enjoying dancing at the Adobe Squares anniversary dances with the Ghost Riders and attended the Golden State Round-up when it was held in Sacramento. Are you still working? Retired? What is / was your occupation? The Bossallers are retired and enjoying every minute of it. Jim remained at Hewlett-Packard, which became Agilent Technologies, until he retired in 2009 a long and successful career. Carole is also retired from work and loves spending time in her garden and with her grandchildren. Do you have any special hobbies or interests? Jim s retirement provided him with time to do many projects around the house, updating floors, building a workshop, and working in their yard. He enjoys flying remote control airplanes and has recently added remote control cars to his fun time. Carole really enjoys being a grandma and gets to spend time with the kids often. She also works through her church the Cross and Crown Lutheran Church -- with folks who are unable to get to church, taking communion to them. She and Jim have also participated with NOAH, Neighbors Organized Against Hunger, and with a Bible study group that meets for general fellowship each week. 9

What is your favorite holiday? Like many, Christmas is a favorite holiday for the Bossallers. It is time they enjoying spending with their family as many of them as they can pull together. Thanksgiving is also special to them since they celebrate their anniversary, and now often visit their children in Texas during that time. Do you have any special traditions around that holiday or others? We had more Christmas traditions when our family was younger, and our first grandchildren were small, but with the children having their own families, they are starting their own traditions. We still get together on Christmas Eve and sometime during the day on Christmas, but the kids spend Christmas morning with their own families. Do you like to travel? Hawaii is a favorite spot for Jim and Carole, with them visiting as often as they can. They love Kauai, and enjoy many activities while they are there ziplining, biking, kayaking, and rafting. They have some great stories to share about some of their adventures, so please ask them to share with you. They have been taking their children and their families one at a time sharing time and making memories with them, really enjoying this favorite spot!! What is your favorite vacation / travel destination so far? After Jim s retirement, Jim and Carole took a trip to Europe, which they loved. They spent a week in London, a week in Rome, and some time in Venice. Carole especially enjoyed the buildings and the history they took in on their journey and was reminded of her love for art history that she had taken in college. She found that she remembered much of what she had learned in school and was thrilled to get to see it in person while on their vacation. Other trips that they have really enjoyed included an Alaskan Cruise (there are stories here too) and a couple trips to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Is there anything else you would like our fellow dancers to know about you? Jim and Carole plan to come back dancing as soon as Jim has fully recovered from back surgery that he just had earlier this month. He is doing well, but doesn t want to take any chances with his back until he gets the all clear from his doctor. They are also looking forward to doing more traveling around the U.S. They would love to see Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota, revisit the Grand Canyon, and then continue traveling to different areas of the U.S. There is much to see here at home. They hope to have great-grandchildren one day. Really, Jim and Carole are for the first time spending time together just the two of them. Since they merged their young families, they have always had children with them, then grandchildren They also had Jim s father living with them for 8 years after Jim s mom passed away, and dad just passed earlier this year, shortly after his 100 th birthday. WOW!! So, now for the first time, they are alone and getting to spend time with each other. And they love it! It is like a delayed honeymoon for the two of them. We are looking forward to having them out dancing with us again soon!! 10
