4 VAN BUREN HIGH SCHOOL Tennis Team Requirements Please read and sign these Van Buren High School Tennis Team Try Out Requirements and return to Coach Mosby or Mrs. Butterfield, Mrs. Owen or Mrs. Northridge, Coach Academy, or Mrs VBHS by Monday, May 1 st. The week of try-outs will be May 1 st from 3:30-5:00 (except on Monday and Tuesday, it will go until 4:30 due to the last 2 jr high/mid sch matches). There is a possibility we will not have to use all 5 days of that week, but it will depend on the numbers and the weather. You do not have to have any prior tennis experience to try out, but please realize that your child will be competing for a spot on the team against kids that do. I am looking for good kids who want to learn, are coachable, respectful, have good attendance at school and practices, make good grades, and don't cause problems at school. I will be checking with their teachers to see what kind of kids they are in the classroom setting. A true teammate will represent his team on and off the court. Last but definitely not least, we are playing in one of the toughest conferences in the State, 7A West, so this isn t junior high/middle school tennis anymore. This is the real deal, and we love to win. We have had representatives every year at the State Tournament for 11 years in a row so I am looking for kids who want to win and can help us get there. Practices: -Athletes at VBHS will have tennis during 7 th period (2:30-4:30). -9 th graders will need to have tennis on their schedule for 7 th hour, and the bus will pick them up and bring them to the courts daily. They will also be done by 4:30. -Rain-outs will be called off by me and will be announced at their schools, but everyone will still come to high school if it is a practice day. Matches: -Every Monday and Thursday starting August 28 th with some Tuesdays too. - We will finish regular season beginning of October with Conference and State Tournaments mid and late October. (have to qualify for those) Transportation to & From Practices/Matches: - Bus transportation required to all matches and home to all matches. The only time parents are allowed to sign their kids out to ride home from matches will be in case of an emergency or if they are in another school function that evening. - Parents are responsible for picking them up after we arrive home from matches & practices. I will not wait around too long on a child s ride after practices are over at 4:30 or in the summers or season.

5 - Your child will call home when we get to Dyer/Alma from an away match so you will have time to be at courts to pick them up when we arrive so there shouldn t be any waiting there either. Cost: - VBHS covers the cost for the uniforms and meals. - We will have some kind of fundraiser because we have a booster club - If the kids want to order sweats or wind suit, that would be on them. Events Required of Them: - Please let me know out beside each one of these if there is a problem or an ALREADY scheduled camp or vacation. TOURNAMENTS: -The returning kids have to participate in at least 2 tournaments on their own this summer, and those who are new members will be required on a level of play basis. If they are playing team tennis, this will count towards this. SUMMER CHALLENGE PLAY (matches against teammates they schedule on their own time) to determine seeding on team PRACTICES: - Weightlifting will start after the Dead Week Period (June 25 th July 8 th )@ a time to be announced later. This will only last for about an hour 3x/week & will either be at the high school arena or football fieldhouse. -season mandatory practices start July 24 th Aug 4 th (8:00-10:00) -Aug 7 th until school starts (3:30-5:30) **** If there are any behavioral problems or not showing up for practices or matches, I reserve the right to handle it as needed.
