1 SUMMER 2012 NEWSLETTER Deveron Branch of the Pony Club Dear Member As I write this, it s only 6 weeks or so to Camp Where does time go! We re busy planning a fabulous week for this year so if you ve got any great ideas give me a shout! It s been a mixed start to the season, the weather just hasn t played ball at all. Some of you have managed to get out and about and you re already collecting rosettes for this year so well done. We ve been represented all over the country literally this season already! Sally Mair and Lucy Cowie have both made trips to England to compete in tetrathlon and dressage well done girls, you re a real inspiration to us all! Grassroots teams are busy training for the Area 1 competition and the Games Girls are racing up and down various paddocks like jousting knights, getting ready for their competitions too. We say farewell to Wilma, our Chief Instructor and thank her for all her help and generosity over the past three years. We wish her all the very best as she continues to move up the dressage judging lists. I am sure you will all see her out and about competing and I know she will be pleased to see you all too! You ll see attached lots of competitions and it s time to think about Interbranch too. You ll see an Area 1 Combined Training competition, this is the newly revamped Caroline s Cup. It s a great competition held at Dunecht and they have changed the rules slightly so even if you ve competed at Interbranch, provided you fit the criteria, you can still complete at this one. Hope to see many of you there, especially those thinking of Interbranch selection at novice level for DR and SJ. Remember guys, this is your club, any ideas, no matter how mad you think they might be, send me an and we ll see if it s possible especially anything you desperately want to do at camp! Happy Riding! There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. 2 YESTERDAY S NEWS... TETRATHLON Ridin, shootin, runnin and swimmin all in one day We did it all and what a fab achievement it was for everyone who competed at Faraway and at Kinnermit. For a lot of our members it was their first attempt at a tetrathlon. The show jumping phase was well up to height and we introduced our own format for scoring by making it an accumulator. With a maximum of 1400 points for a clear round, each fence earned 100 points with an added bonus of 200 for coming through the finish line. The shoot, run and swim took place at Kinnermit and we were lucky to have fabulous sunshine. With loads of rosettes at the prize giving, no-one went home empty handed. EASTER TREASURE HUNT We dodged the rainy days and finally were lucky enough to find a dry spell to run our annual treasure hunt ride. With spring grass on the ground the ponies were well up for it. Once into the first field, every pony was on its toes but a big uphill slope made sure everyone stayed safe. Once the clue collecting began it was a race to find the next stash of chocolate and a rush to solve the puzzle. You can watch a short film of the day at watch?v=jddvzik6m0o HORSE AND PONY CARE COMPETITION Deveron s seniors and juniors represented the club in the Area 1 Horse and Pony Care competition hosted by Deveron. Huge congratulations to our seniors Lottie, Maisie and Alex and junior team of Lucy, Abby and Matilda who both won and have qualified to go through to the National Championships in Cheshire in August. Our other junior team of Megan, Laura and Tara also finished in 3rd place, a great result and personal best for all of them. Thanks to Wilma and Syd for hosting us and putting on such a great event! SCOTTISH TETRATHLON Sally Mair represented Scotland at the Royal Windsor Show Jubilee Pageant watched by Her Majesty The Queen. Sally and her horse Rico travelled south with two team mates. After the shoot, run and swim the Scottish team were in poll position with more than 400 points in hand. Sally was second overall and the top scoring girl out of eight other teams from England, Ireland and Wales. The Scots could afford two poles each in the final show jumping round and still win. But the riding was tense as Sally s horse Rico began to tie-up. Luckily, she was fit enough to finish which meant the team won overall. This is a fantastic achievement and well done Sally - it is a well-deserved win. GAMES Well done to our Senior and Junior novice games teams Xenia, Alex G and Alex I, Abby, Lucy C, Megan, Nikki, Lucy S, Lauren and Rachael who successfully competed at the Area 1 games competition at Philorth. This is a mighty competitive discipline so well done to all of you. And everyone came home with beautiful rosettes. ALL DAY RALLY It was great to see so many of you at our recent All Day Rally -and weren t we lucky with the sunshine? These rallies are fantastic value at just 20 ( 27 with XC), giving members three full hour s of instruction and a badge session in the middle of the day. We hope to see you all again at the next rally on 2nd June.

For Junior Camp it is approx 38 per day with members again having 2 lessons a day, stable management, lunch, a BBQ on Wednesday night and grass livery. This is an essential badge for any member wanting to take their C test. Members need to train for five hours over three sessions. See the dates for your diary for dates and times. GRASSROOTS For four years running Deveron has done brilliantly at the area Grassroots competition. We have swept the board twice with some fantastic scores. This year s competition will be held on 16th June and training is well underway. We hope to have a number of teams competing in this 3-phase competition. Teams of four - under 11s and seniors of 11s and over - collect points for Tack and Turnout, Handy Pony and formation a dressage test. Scores from each phase are added and the cumulative total is the final score. It is great fun and we hope to do well again this year. Joanne McRae is organising practises so huge thanks must go to her. AREA 1 COMBINED TRAINING This is the newly revamped Caroline s Cup comprising Show Jumping and Dressage. It s a great competition held at Dunecht, this year with changed rules so even if you ve competed at Interbranch, provided you fit the criteria, you can still complete at this one. We hope to see many of you there, especially those thinking of Interbranch selection at novice level for DR and SJ. Please put your names forward to Emma if you re keen to come along. INTERBRANCH AND TRAINING Interbranch this year is to be held at Auchleshie on 24th and 26th July. This year, as always, in order to represent the club you will need to be selected - please let Emma know if you are keen to be considered. You will need to have attended at least three rallies since last camp but if you are away at university or working, it will be up to the DC s discretion. We hope to have members representing the club at Novice, Intermediate and Open level. We are planning Interbranch selection rallies of Flatwork, Show Jumping and Cross Country. Dates will follow shortly.
4 REGULAR SHOW JUMPING EVENINGS We are going to try something new this summer by offering regular show jumping. Members will be able to ride a course of show jumps of any height (within reason!). You won t need to book - just turn up and ride. Plans for this are still underway and we will let you know where and when this will take place in due course. More information will be available on the website soon - be assured you won t miss out! MINI ONE DAY EVENT Following the success of our previous competitions, we will run a mini one day event especially for young riders. It is intended to be fun so no-one will get eliminated. We will have lead rein and assisted rider classes with a choice of mini xc fences. A date is still being planned and we will confirm nearer the time. AREA TETRATHLON/TRIATHLON Any members wishing to compete at the Areas 1 and 19 Tetrathlon competition at Gleneagles on the 19th and 20th July please get in touch with Lucy Mair. The event is open to members aged eight and upwards. NORTH CUP Always popular with our members, this year s area event will be on Saturday 11th August. As yet no venue has been confirmedso please look out for more information on the website. SCAVENGER HUNT Based on the success of Easter Egg Hunt, Fiona Hill will be organising something similar in the summer holidays... collect clues and solve the puzzle from the back of your pony. Date planned 12th (or 19th) August venue to be confirmed. Please contact Fiona for more details BADGES AND BADGE NIGHTS As part of camp all members will be given the opportunity to gain some more badges for the sleeves of your sweatshirts we might even give you sewing classes so you can attach them yourselves! A few members might even be able to complete the whole set of badge awards and gain their very special Blue Cross. ALL THE OTHER STUFF... MEMBERSHIP UPDATE At the last count we now have 60 members. Welcome to all our new members. If you have any queries or ideas for fund raising please contact a committee member. WEBSITE If anyone would like to contribute to the website then send your stories and pictures to Fiona Hill at fiona@finkspublishing.com. CALLING ALL FIRST AIDERS If any parent holds a current First Aid certificate please could you let Mark Haley know. It would be really useful to have a list of people who could potentially help out at rallies sometimes. We would then be able to have a rota for First Aid at rallies and competitions. MERCHANDISE Introducing the team hoodie! If you are lucky enough to be selected to represent the club and be part of a team you will be entitled to buy this year s team hoodie. We have previously gone for polo shirts but by popular demand hoodies are back. They cost (childs size) or (full size) and can be ordered from Emma Haley. HELPERS We are always looking for help from volunteers. If you are ever available to lend a hand at any shows, rallies or events please, please, please get in touch with a committee member. You will never be turned down! RALLY RULES Rallies are the backbone of the Pony Club and we hope to see as many of you as possible at forthcoming dates. All day rallies cost 20 ( 27 if going XC) while other rallies cost 10. Please remember when attending rallies there will be a tack and turnout inspection and it is important that not only is your horse/pony correctly dressed but you are too. If anyone is unsure of the correct turnout for rallies then please feel free to contact Emma. At each rally, points are awarded for your tack and turnout and at the parent s night a trophy will be awarded to the member with the most points in each age group. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR RALLY CARD FOR SIGNING. SPURS It is imperative that anyone wishing to compete in spurs has their spurs card signed by Emma... it is worth remembering that it is one card per horse. If you ride two horses then you will need two cards. You must carry this and present it at all shows and events. PASSPORTS Under new rules introduced by the Pony Club all members MUST carry their pony/horse passports when travelling to rallies or shows. Please ensure you have yours with you whenever you go out in your trailer/lorry.
