2 The PEI Youth Talent Competition is proudly presented by the PEI Mutual Insurance Company and the PEI Association of Exhibitions. With the ongoing generous support of the PEI Mutual Insurance Company, this program continues to give talented Island youth exposure to the national stage by providing the Provincial Finalist(s) the opportunity to compete at the Canadian Youth Talent Competition. 3 Eligibility for Youth Talent Search The contest is open to non-professional performers only, between the ages of 13 and 21 years. Each member of an act, whether performing as a soloist or as a member of a group, must be at least 13 years old and must not have reached his/ her twenty-second birthday by the opening day of the current year s participating fairs. For the purpose of the Youth Talent Search, a professional entertainer is: a) one who earns more than $16,000 (after cost recovery) in earned entertainment dollars, in a given year; b) one who is a union member, or c) one who has a professional agent or manager securing employment in the entertainment field; or d) one who sings or is the principal performer on any CD released for commercial distribution through contracts with recording companies paid to promote them. (This does NOT prohibit an entertainer from self-producing a CD for sale or distribution to friends and associates such as in church group activities or friendly retail outlets.) Proof of age will be required. Each exhibition may choose to have a preliminary contest should the number of entries exceed thirty contestants. An individual cannot be part of an act at the participating fairs deciding competition if he or she did not appear in the act at the preliminary contest. Participants may enter one or all youth talent competitions held in P.E.I. providing they have not qualified to enter the current provincial finals. A participant who has won the Provincial Finals and competed at the National Youth Talent Finals is no longer eligible to compete in future P.E.I./CAFÉ Youth Talent competitions. 1

4 Categories Categories of competition are as follows: 1. Vocal Solo 2. Instrumental Solo 3. Dance Solo 4. Vocal Group (no more than 5 people) 5. Instrumental Group (no more than 5 people) 6. Dance Group (no more than 5 people) 7. Variety Solo 8. Variety Group (no more than 5 people) Note: Competition categories are for the purposes of scheduling performers, clarifying eligibility and determining judging criteria. Each act will be judged against each other act, regardless of the category of performance. Competition Competitions for the Youth Talent Search will be held at nine fairs and festivals on Prince Edward Island. A participant may enter any of these competitions. The participant may enter only two categories in any one competition. A participant may also enter other fair competitions for the current year, providing they did not advance to the provincial finals from a previous fair. 7 General Rules and Regulations of Judging: Contestants will be judged on the following basis: Natural ability 25% Quality of Performance 25% Showmanship and Suitable Appearance 25% Audience Rapport 25% There will be a minimum of three judges for each local competition. Each of the three principal performance disciplines (vocal, instrumental and dance) should be represented by one or more qualified member(s) of the judging panel. Decision of the contest judges is final. No discussion regarding any decision shall be entered into by the Youth Talent Search organizers. 8 Cash awards presented for: First Place: $ Second Place: $75.00 Third Place: $50.00 Provincial Youth Talent Search Finals The final competition will be held at the région Évangéline recreation centre on Friday, September 2 at 2:30 p.m. during the opening ceremonies of L Exposition agricole et le Festival acadien de la région Évangéline. The judges will select one overall winner to represent Prince Edward Island at the Canadian Youth Talent Competition at the national conference of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions in November 2011 in London, Ontario. The winner will receive an all expense paid trip to the Canadian finals as well as $ in prize money.
