1 February H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, February 23 rd at the courthouse meeting room at 7:00 p.m. Extension Office Closed The Extension office will be closed on Monday February 16 th in observance of President s Day. 4-H Club Day & Regional 4-H Club Day The Morris County 4-H Club Day will be held on Saturday, March 7 th at the Council Grove Elementary School. Entry forms are attached to this newsletter or on our website at: The entry deadline is Friday, February 27 th at 5 pm. With our entry deadline being only one week before the Morris County Club Day, we will be ing the schedule out to the participating families and not sending it postal mail. Therefore, we ask that you write your address (that you check often) at the top of your county entry form. Regional 4-H Club Day will be held on March 14 th at Madison High School. County Fiber Arts Meeting A county Fiber Arts meeting will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the First Baptist Church in Council Grove from 6:30-8:30 pm. Please bring your supplies. County Foods Meetings A county foods project meeting will be held on February 10 th at 6:00 p.m. at the Morris County Fair Building. 4-Hers will be making their own mini fruit pies! Participants are asked to bring one can of their favorite fruit pie filling. They are also asked to bring a pastry blender or rolling pin, if they have one available. Please RSVP to the Extension Office ( ) by February 6 th. A county foods project meeting will be held on February 24 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Morris County Courthouse Meeting Room at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will cover the basics of demonstrations and give tips, hints, and ideas. Please RSVP to the Extension Office ( ) by February 20 th. County Swine Project Meeting There will be a county swine project meeting held on Saturday, March 21, 2015, from 10-2 in the courthouse meeting room.

2 Morris County 4-H Foundation Scholarships Once again the Morris County 4-H Foundation is offering scholarships to present or past Morris County 4-H members. Also, please note that students can apply and receive the scholarship twice. Applications are available in the Extension Office, on our website or from your school counselor. The application deadline is May 1 st. Konley Harding Memorial Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for a $1000 academic scholarship in memory of Konley Harding. Applicants must be a current or former 4-H member and a graduating high school senior planning to pursue higher education at a four year college, community college, or vocational technical school. Preference will be given to applicants seeking an agricultural related field of study. Applications are due May 15 th and are available in the Extension Office or on the website at Senior Division KAP Form The state 4-H office has recently updated the KAP form for 4-Hers in the senior division (Ages 14-18). The form will be used on the county level beginning with the H year. The updated form has been posted on the Flint Hills District webpage and can be found at flinthills.ksu.edu. Once at the webpage, click on the 4-H Youth Development tab and then on Morris County Forms. Please note that the form has a revision date of September 15, Morris County Fair Dates The dates for the 2015 Morris County Fair have been set for July 18-July 27. State Fair Premium Checks Reminder --- Cashing your State Fair premium checks promptly is greatly appreciated, please. Volunteer Forum Feb 28 th will be the Flint Hills Volunteer Forum held at the Morris County Community Building. The forum will address the topics of getting volunteers, keeping and motivating them. As well as providing tools to assist in making meetings fun and productive. Cost is $5 before Feb 20 th. The schedule and registration forms are available on our website at flinthills.ksu.edu/p.aspx?tabid=72 Registration forms need to be turned into our office. Morris County 4-H Foundation Incentive Awards 4-H clubs will receive $10 for each top blue awarded to their club or club member at 4-H Club Day. Clubs should also keep track of the activities they do to promote interest in joining 4-H. Some examples include recruitment booths at school activities or other public events and/or participation in parades. The club will earn $10 for each event that qualifies. The Morris County 4-H Foundation will review the Morris County 4- H Club Summary Report to select winning activities. If desired, clubs may attach a note suggesting which items they feel qualify or provide further explanation to judge their promotion.

3 Photography Workshop Shawnee County 4-H will be offering a state-wide photography workshop on Sunday March 15, 2015, in Auburn, Kansas. The registration and payment deadline is February 26 th. Registration forms can be picked up in the Extension Office. For more information about the workshop, contact the Shawnee County Extension Office at T-Shirt Quilt Classes It s not too late to come to the classes. The first class has been held, but instructions can be found in the Extension office to catch you up. The next class will be Sunday, March 8th at 1:30pm in the Morris Co Courthouse meeting room. Classes will be $8 each. More information can be found on the Extension Facebook page or at the Extension office. Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day Youth can learn about raising and showing pigs at the Kansas Junior Swine Producer Day, which will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015, in Weber Arena. This highly interactive, hands-on educational event will be a fun filled day of activities in which youth, parents, swine project leaders and adults can increase their knowledge and experience of swine production and management practices. Presentations and demonstrations will be given by K-State graduate students and faculty, as well as featured speakers. All participants will receive a K-State Show Pig Guide, T-shirt, and a complimentary noon lunch. Participants with registrations after February 1 cannot be guaranteed a T-shirt. Cost: $10/person by February 18 or $15/person after. More than $1,000 in show equipment/supplies to be given away! More information at Small Animal Weigh-In Sunday, April 19 from 5-7pm will be small Animal Weigh-In at the Fairgrounds. Tagging for hogs will be the same as last year. (You may pick up tags in the Extension office, tag the hog, then send a picture of that animal showing the tag in ear by to bammerlin@ksu.edu). Beef Weigh-In Beef Weigh-In will be held on Sunday, March 1 st from 5:00 7:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Horse Judging Contest A horse judging contest will be held during Equifest of Kansas at Kansas Coliseum, Park City, on Friday, Feb 13. Registration will be at 7:45am. There are 3 age divisions. Age Divisions Seniors: contestants in high school Intermediates: contestants younger than high school age. Beginners: non-competitor no reasons, no awards. 4 Horse Judging Camps The Kansas State University Horse Judging Team will host two separate camps to assist youth in learning to judge horses and give oral reasons. Please visit the website, for more information and registration forms. Beginner Camp - June 2, 2015 The beginner camp is designed for youth with very little experience judging horses and would like to learn more about note taking and oral reasons. Emphasis will be placed on the placing of classes commonly seen in Kansas judging contests. Objectives: (1) Learn about evaluating horses in different classes, (2) Improve oral reasons, (3) Learn easy note taking skills, (4) Gain individual instruction, (5) Sharpen presentation skills. Classes covered include Stock Type Halter, Western Pleasure, and Hunter Under Saddle. *Camp registration fee is $35/person and must be paid by May 10, Advanced Camp - June 3-4, 2015 The advanced camp is designed for youth with some experience judging horses and would like to learn more about note taking and oral reasons. Emphasis will be placed on the placing and reasons of classes commonly seen in Kansas judging contests. Youth will be housed in KSU dorms and will be assigned a roommate. *Camp registration fee is $120/person and must be paid by May 10, Tractor Safety Day Lyon, Chase, Coffey, and Morris County Extension Offices will be working together to host the 2015 Hazardous Occupation Training (H.O.T.) classes for all youth who will be working for area ag producers. Training is scheduled for March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at PrairieLand Partners. Youth ages will be eligible for a certificate showing completion of the H.O.T. training. Younger students may come and take the test, but they will not be able to receive their certificate until their 14 th birthday. Students need to pre-register by March 6 so they can receive and work on their class materials prior to the first session.
