DISCOVERY DAYS Are You Ready for Discovery Days? Put May 29 - June 1, 2018 on your calendar to be in Manhattan on the K-State campus. This year s theme is Tell Your story Discovery Days offers classes and tours about 4-H projects, careers, hobbies, community service and more! You can also share your talents in the Talent Show. Are you ready to dance? Are you ready for some Call Hall ice cream? Are you ready for some great speakers and Discovery Days Night Live and all the other possibilities in your future? There is a great selection of new classes. Join us now to enjoy this event this summer! Registration opens on March 1. All documents that you will need have been posted at The deadline to register is April 15th. Cloverbuds Reminders When 4-H and/or Extension plans, organizes and facilitates a livestock, small animal, horse or pre or post-fair activity please double check that 4-H Policies are being followed. An area of concern is 4-H Cloverbuds. The program was designed for 5-and 6- year-olds. Cloverbuds is activity-focused, rather than project focused. Furthermore, 4-H Cloverbuds members may not participate in any competitive 4- H events. 4-H Cloverbuds members many showcase their exhibits at fairs and public events. 4-H Cloverbuds may not have 4-H livestock projects that require long-term, ongoing care or weigh-ins, nor can the member participate as a competitive 4-H exhibitor within livestock divisions. Opportunity for First Year Swine Project 4Her in Greenwood County This opportunity is for any Greenwood County 4H member who has an interest in showing swine. This member cannot have shown pigs before. To be eligible, the member has to be enrolled in the swine project by May 1 st. The member has to have a desire to want to raise and show this pig to the best of his/her ability. The pig will be donated, as well as the first bag of feed and other necessary equipment. The chosen 4Her will attend a prospect pig sale/auction with the donator. The individuals donating this pig want to help a new member get started in the swine project and will be available for advice. Those interested, need to submit an essay describing why they want to be in the swine project. They need to describe how they will care for the pig. It doesn t need to be more than 300 words and can be typed or handwritten. The deadline for entry will be Friday, March 16 th, at 5 pm in the Extension Office. Keep in mind that one hog will eat somewhere between bags of feed depending on the animal. I have priced show feed anywhere from $15-$25/bag. That is going to come up something between $300-$500 of feed/pig. Hand feeding the pig instead of having them on a self feeder generally increases the rate of gain, remember we need the pig to weigh 230 pounds to be heavy enough to sell at the fair. Your pig must be tagged at small animal weigh-in PULLORUM TESTING FOR POULTRY Any poultry, except waterfowl, to be shown at the 2018 Greenwood County Fair must be Pullorum- Typhoid clean. On July 11, that testing is available for those birds at the Greenwood County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please call the Extension Office at if you have any questions about this event. Rabbit Superintendent Needed The Greenwood County Fair is needing a Rabbit Superintendent. If you are interested please call Lindsay Shorter at

4 YOUTH LIVESTOCK NOMINATION INFORMATION: The livestock nomination forms and information for all species are now available on the website, See step-by-step guide at end of newsletter. FCS Judging Contest The Challenge is Health Family and Consumer Sciences Judging has recently taken on a whole new look and approach! Build your own team, 2-4 members are required to participate. Your team will create and submit a video addressing a community health problem you d like to team up to resolve! If you ve got great ideas on how to create a healthier community now is your chance to make a difference. Senior and Intermediate division teams are eligible and may be selected to participate at the State fair on Saturday, Sept. 15 in the 4-H Encampment Building. Cash prizes will be awarded at the state level to assist teams and bring about the changes in their proposals. Preliminary videos are due May 15; select your team members now! Begin by creating your team and identifying a problem that is affecting health in your community. Be creative! Examples could be: access to your community park is difficult due to uneven sidewalks; or healthy snack options are limited due to vending machine options; or access to a building is difficult due to poor outside lighting. Research your topic and create a plan. Design a 2-4 minute video with your team that includes: sharing the problem, an outline that solves the problem, other community members and ideas about your problem, the solution and how your team would like to address it. Be sure to use royalty free production music if you add music to your video to avoid copyright infringements. Send a link to your video by May 15 to Andrea Feldkamp at afeld@ksu.edu. When your web-link is submitted, please make sure it is a working link. If judges are not able to access web-links, this may result in disqualification. Complete and submit the project rubric with your video. More details and rubrics for each age division are available through this link Countywide Photography Meeting s March :30 in the Extension office RSVP by March 11 to Kim Gaines or the Extension office We will go over the levels of photography (beginner, intermediate and senior skill levels) getting to know our camera, information on manual settings and judging criteria. APRIL 29, H Foundation will be hosting a concession stand on Sunday, April 29th, during the Flint Hills Classic Livestock show. All that is needed is the help of 4-H members and some adult volunteers to operate the concession stand. The 4-H Council moved to provide manpower for the Flint Hills Classic. Donations, food, cooking, etc. is not necessary; only a little bit of time is needed to man the concession stand. 4-H Council has assembled the following schedule for clubs to come and help. Approximately 2 adults and 5 4-Hers are needed. The :30 shift will need 2-3 more than that. All proceeds from the concession stand will benefit the Greenwood County 4-H Foundation, and will be used to improve fairground facilities. 5 Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator Certificate Training April 5-8 Spring 4-H Shooting Sports Training registration will be available in mid-february. Fees will be announced soon. Please note - beginning this year, the Volunteer Screening process must be completed prior to attending training. Rock Springs 4-H Center is again the site scheduled for this in-depth, hands-on training, guided by nationally certified instructors. All disciplines are to be offered provided five participants enroll in the individual specialty areas. Disciplines planned are:archery, Coordinator, Hunting Skills- Muzzleloading, Pistol, Rifle (BB gun, air rifle, etc.) Shotgun, Western Heritage/Cowboy Action The dates for 4-H Shooting Sports Training is April 6 8, however if interested in Western Heritage/Cowboy Action an additional day is required therefore dates are April 5 8. Coordinators and agents are responsible for signing up the county/district trainees and will be provided a link to complete this task before Monday, April 2, 5 p.m. As a reminder, selection of trainees for the local program is by invitation by the coordinator and agent, assuring that the attendee has the appropriate skill set for the discipline as well as skills in working with youth. Not all adults or youth that show an interest are an appropriate fit for becoming a certified 4-H instructor. It is recommended that each local program develop and follow policies on how the current instructors will mentor new instructors to provide sustainability for the local program while reaching additional youth in the community. New for this year, the Volunteer Screening process must be completed prior to the training for both teen and adult volunteers depending on discipline selected either April 5 or 6. The steps include: Registered with volunteer profile on 4HOnline- Background checks, criminal and Child abuse and neglect completed Kansas 4-H Volunteer Orientation completed Approval by Extension Executive/ Governing Board To assist agents in recruiting teen and adult volunteers the 4-H Shooting Sports Task Force has clarified the volunteer positions as follows: Coordinator Responsible under the guidance of the local Extension Agent for the overall coordination and management of the county/district 4-H Shooting Sports Program; must be 21 years old or older, serve as a registered volunteer and must have completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training. 5 Instructor Responsible under the guidance of the local 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator and Extension Agent for the teaching of knowledge and skills related to a specific discipline to 4-H members ages 8 18; must be 21 years old or older and serve as a registered volunteer and must have completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training. Junior Apprentice - Shall perform all duties of an instructor under the direct supervision of a certified discipline instructor; must be ages by training date, serve as a registered volunteer and completed the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports certification training. To become a discipline instructor, the junior apprentice will need to complete the instructor discipline training previously attended again when age 21. Apprentice Upon becoming age 18, a Junior Apprentice s title becomes Apprentice. This position shall perform all duties of an instructor under the direct supervision of a certified discipline instructor; must be ages by training date, and serve as a registered volunteer and must have completed the discipline training as a Junior Apprentice. To become a discipline instructor, the apprentice will need to complete the instructor discipline training previously attended again when age 21. Helper An adult volunteer, 18 years of age and lder, and not a previous Junior Apprentice, must serve as a registered volunteer that has participated in local 4-H Shooting Sports Trainings given by the local 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator and/or Instructor. Live fire activities must be under the direct supervision of the discipline specific certified instructor (i.e. if the session is a shotgun activity, then a certified shotgun instructor must be present for live fire). Finally, occasionally we have inquiries about transfers from other state 4-H certifications to become Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports instructors. Kansas 4- H Shooting Sports has a long time standing policy that we will not accept certifications from other states. The issue of transferring certifications from one state to another was discussed a few years ago at a National Coordinators Meeting. At that time very few of the states accepted transfers from other states. This is basically because of the risk management and the liability assumed by the state program. Another is that extension service delivery of programs varies from state to state therefore it s important to know state policies.

6 4-H Shooting Sports Rule Changes Effective for the H season, all shooting sports participants will be required to attend 1 scheduled safety meeting AND a minimum of 2 practices in order to be eligible to participate in the county fair events. This requirement applies to shotgun and archery. Travis Wiggins, Shotgun Instructor and Brad Boulanger, Archery Instructor will be scheduling numerous practices to give the 4-Hers ample opportunity to meet these requirements. 4-H Archery Goat and Sheep Tagging At the Superintendent's meeting held last August, the superintendent's suggested having Greenwood County breeding does and ewes tagged, to show at the county fair. At the February Greenwood County 4-H Foundation meeting, it was voted on, and passed, to require all commercial does and ewes (ewes and does without registration papers) to be tagged at spring weigh in with the Kansas 4- H Tag. Registered breeding ewes and does will not be required to be tagged, but will be required to send a copy of their Registration papers to the extension office by April 30th. As we start the 2018 archery season, we are excited to see the project continue to grow. No equipment is necessary...just sign up for Shooting Sports: Archery through just like the other projects. Greenwood County 4-H Archery has recurve bows to fit all ages. Compound bows are optional at the 4-Hers expense. Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports requires a minimum age of 9 years old. All shooting sports participants will be required to attend 1 scheduled safety meeting AND a minimum of 2 practices in order to be eligible to participate in the county fair events. We are wanting to travel to a few more competitions this year if the kids are interested. We are planning to start practices in late March on Sunday afternoons and go from there. Get enrolled and you will be receiving updates soon. We have also started a Facebook group (closed) to help with communication of practices and events. Look up: Greenwood County 4-H Archery to stay in touch. If you have any questions, don t hesitate to contact Brad at (620) Shotgun Shotgun practice will be every Sunday from 3pm to 5pm beginning June 3, with the last one July 1. It will cost $2.00 a round for practices and competition. This is to help maintain the gun club and pay for liability insurance. If you have any question, please call Travis
