1 January 2018 District-wide Cloverbuds The Sunshine Makers Cloverbud Club will meet January 11th (Always the 2nd Thursday of the month) at the Paola Office from 5:30-6:30pm. Any Cloverbud is welcome to come. Cloverbuds must be 5-6 years old by Jan. 1, Jr. Leaders Meetings The next Miami County Jr. Leader Meeting will be January 8th at 7pm at the Paola Office. The next Linn County Jr. Leader Meeting will be January 21st at 4:00 pm at the Linn County 4-H Bldg. 4-H Councils The next Miami County 4-H Council Meeting will be January 8th at 8pm at the Paola Office. This will be election of officers. The next Linn County 4-H Council Meeting will be January 24th at 7pm at Linn County 4-H Building. MARAIS DES CYGNES EXTENSION DISTRICT 4-H Newsletter 4-H Enrollment All Returning 4-H ers need to enroll online by January 2, May 1st will be add/drop deadline and New Member enrollment deadline. Reminder: You must be 7 before January 1, 2018 to enroll as a 4-H Member. If you are 5-6 years old before January 1, 2018, you can enroll as a Cloverbud. Enroll Online at Participation Forms are online this year and must be completed before your enrollment is official and before the Jan. 2 deadline. Area KAP Screening Volunteers Needed We need 2-3 volunteers to screen KAPs in Eureka, KS on Friday, Jan 19th. Karla will be driving so you can ride with her. Please let Karla know by Jan. 8th if you would like to attend. Area KAPs Due If you were selected as a Senior County Project Champion, you are eligible to send your KAP to area judging. You should have received an about this. The KAPs are due to either Marais des Cygnes Office on Friday, Jan 12th. Club Leader Meeting The next club Leader Meeting will be January 30th, 2018 at 7 pm via zoom. An with instructions on how to connect will be sent to club leaders before the meeting. 2 District Wide Important Dates February 24, 2018 March 24, 2018 May 29-June 1, 2018 June 6-7, 2018 June 16-19, 2018 July 21-28, 2018 August 4-11, 2018 Club Day Regional Day Discovery Days Wild Clover Camp Fantastic 4-H Camp Miami County Fair Linn County Fair Club Day Club Day will be on February 24, 2018 at Prairie View Middle School. There have been some changes to the Club Day sign up. There is now two separate forms; one for individual events and another form for club/group events. For the club/ group events only one person needs to sign up the whole group. For individual events sign up at forms/9u0vyuxgb64ja2nn2; for groups events sign up at If you have any questions please contact the office. Entries are due February 2, 2018 at midnight. We are also going to sign up online for time slots this year. This will be sent out via to those that signed up around February 8th. If you do not sign up for a time slot you will be assigned one. We have also added a new event this year called Career Research Presentation. This event is for Intermediate and Seniors. You will need to research a career that you are interested in, then type a one page summery which will be turned into the judge at club day. You will also give a presentation with a 3 minute maximum. Look over your member Achievement Pin Application so that you know what activities and events you need to participate in. There is new Membership Pin Application for Marais des Cygnes District so make sure that is what you are using. This can be found online at Page 2 4-H NEWSLETTER

3 District Wide LQA/PQA is now YQCA The Livestock Quality Assurance and Pork Quality Assurance programs are no longer available for The new program will be called Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) and will be required for all youth showing Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine at the county fair in BOTH Linn and Miami Counties (pending approval of the 4-H PDC for Linn County). This program will be offered in a face-to-face class, as well as an on-line option. The face-to-face classes will be held: March 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Paola March 28 at 6:00 p.m. in Mound City June 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Paola. All face-to-face classes will need to be pre-registered on-line at and a $3 fee must be paid on-line to be registered for the class. The on-line training will be $12 per youth and can be done at anytime. More details will be made available in the next newsletter and the Marais des Cygnes 4-H sessions will be available in the YQCA system. All quality assurance certifications must be completed by June 15th (class or online). Senior Scholarships Scholarship Letter went out to seniors in both counties. They are due by Jan 8th to your local office. Although current college students are not eligible for our county scholarships, they can apply for state scholarships using the Kansas 4-H Scholarship Form available online at That state scholarships are due in a Marais des Cygnes Office by Jan 8th. Horse Level Testing Horse Level Testing (Level 1) will be held on February 20th and March 22nd at 6:30 p.m. at the Paola Extension Office. If you are in need of Horse Level Testing for Level 2, a class will be held on March 22nd following the level 1 class, approximately 7:30 p.m. Horse Level 1 is required to compete at the Miami County Fair and the East Central District Horse Show. Levels may also be required for hi-point awards or other items, so please check with your leader or agent to find out what level you need to have completed. All level testing must be done by June 15th for the East Central District Horse Show. Horse Judging Team The Marais des Cygnes 4-H Program will be taking a horse judging team to the Equi-Fest Horse Judging Contest, which will also be the Kansas State 4-H Horse Judging Contest. The contest will be held February 23 in Topeka, KS. We will have practice on January 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Paola Extension Office and February 8th at 6:30 p.m. in Mound City. This contest is open to any 4-H'er so please plan to attend one or both of these practices if you would like to compete. Please let Abbie know if you intend to participate, abbie2@ksu.edu. East Central District Horse Show The 2018 East Central District Horse Show will be held July 10th in Lawrence, Kansas. The District Horse Show is a qualifier for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Exhibitors must receive a purple or blue at districts to qualify for the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Entry information will be sent via to all horse project members in the spring, but I wanted to make sure everyone had the date of the show. Page 3 4-H NEWSLETTER

4 State Events Kansas 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus The Citizenship Washington Focus trip will be June 14-25, the cost to attend is $1850. Youth who attend this 11 day event will have the opportunity to visit the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Museum of the American Revolution and Gettysburg. We will need a minimum of 35 youth and adults in order to make this trip happen for 2018 so please encourage your friends to sign up if they are interested. A $100 non refundable deposit is required to secure your seat for this trip. Register at h.org/events/index.html 2018 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training The 2018 Kansas 4-H Ambassador Training will be February at the Rock Springs 4-H Center near Junction City. It is open to all county/district 4-H ambassadors, interested teens, ambassador advisors and Extension staff. The theme is 4-H Ambassadors: Leadership on Target. There will be six youth workshops, three adult workshops, two speakers, with lots of fun and fellowship. Full details will be posted and registration will go live on or before December 6th. Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification and Training News The 2018 Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification training will be January 26-28, 2018, in Wichita, Kansas at the Sedgwick County Extension Center, 7001 W. 21 st N. (21 st and Ridge). Beginning the training on Friday evening will allow participants in one weekend to be trained and certified in the four dog phases of showmanship, obedience, agility and rally obedience of the Dog Care and Training Project. New judges can be certified and returning judges can get a refresher and be re-certified. This is also a good opportunity for local dog project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training and better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show. Participants must be 16-years-old and up to attend this certification and training. Registration for the event is due January 15th at Kansas 4-H Dog Scholarship Details High school seniors or current college freshman who have been in the Kansas 4-H Dog Project for three or more years may apply for the Keith Neuway and Jim Adams Kansas 4-H Dog Care and Training Project Scholarship. This 4-H scholarship is a one-time payment of $ that will be awarded on Saturday, September 15, 2018, during the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show. Kansas Junior Producer Days The Kansas Junior Producer Days will be held in March of 2018 in Weber Hall at Kansas State University. These events are one-day educational programs for youth, parents, project leaders, and agents to learn about selecting and managing a youth livestock project. For both days, tentative topics include selection, nutrition, reproduction, meat science, and health. There will also be an opportunity to experience Youth for the Quality Care of Animals, which is a new, national, multi-specie livestock quality assurance program. Junior Sheep Producer Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2018, and Junior Beef Producer Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, Registration information will be released in December, so watch the KSU Youth Livestock Program Facebook page and website for further details!
