A member of the Sam Scott Memorial Pipe Band, and the Ottawa RCMP Pipes and Drums, John had served one year as the Ottawa Branch Secretary and had also served one year as one of the Ottawa Branch Vice-Presidents. He has already served notice that this will be a one-year term and he does not intend to stay in the position beyond March 2010, the next Branch elections, but his filling of this key position through the spring of 2010 to make sure things continue to run smoothly in the Ottawa Branch is very much appreciated. Taking John s place as the Secretary for the Ottawa Branch is Emily Kate MacLellan of the Glengarry Grade 2 Pipe Band.
2 RCMP PRESENTS HORSE TO QUEEN AT WINDSOR CASTLE First he was a star of the RCMP's Musical Ride, and now Police Service Horse George, a black gelding from Pakenham, Ont., has joined the Queen's royal stables after a presentation full of pomp and ceremony on the grounds of Windsor Castle. For only the fourth time in the force's history, a horse from the RCMP's Musical Ride was given to the Queen, the Mountie s honourary Commissioner, as thousands of spectators attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show and Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo on Saturday 16 May PSH George now follows three of his bloodline relatives in joining the Royal Mews. The Mounties presented the Queen with Burmese in 1969, Centenial in 1973 to mark the 100th anniversary of the RCMP, and Saint James in 1998 to celebrate the RCMP s 125th anniversary. The easygoing black horse with a white patch on his forehead was renamed George (from his original name Terror ) in honour of the Queen's grandfather, King George V. For the ceremony, Saint James was ridden by A/Comm Bernie Corrigan and George was ridden by the RCMP Riding Master, SM Bill Stewart. George was presented to the Queen by RCMP Commissioner William Elliott with Canadian Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan and Canadian High Commissioner James Wright in attendance. Thirteen members of the RCMP Pipes and Drums, representing the seven RCMP bands from across Canada, were honoured to be participants in the historic ceremony. Under the direction of Pipe Major Graeme Ogilvie and Drum Major Graham Muir, the band led the horses onto to the Tattoo grounds to the Maple Leaf Forever. Following the presentation of George to the Queen, the band played Saint James and George off the field to the RCMP Regimental March. The full ceremony is available for viewing on the main page of the Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo web-site at The RCMP Pipes and Drums also had the distinction of being the first international pipe band to take part in the Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo, a fundraiser for current and former members of the British military and their families. Other pipe bands participating in the four-day event on the grounds of Windsor Castle included the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the Scots Guards, the Irish Guards, and pipers/drummers of the 1, 2, 4 and 5 Scots. At Her Majesty s special invitation, the small RCMP contingent was granted the extraordinary privilege of staying in the guest apartments on the north side of Windsor Castle for the ten-day visit. It was an unbelievable opportunity that few Canadians have ever had before. This incredible honour of staying in one of the Queen s official residences ensured that for all the members of the band this would be well remembered as the trip of a life-time. TRIBUTE TO PIPE MAJOR SAM SCOTT The Sons of Scotland welcomed their friends from the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, the Kemptville Pipe Band, the Highland Mist Pipe Band and soloists from Ottawa and Montreal at their recent show at the Canadian War Museum to honor the bravery and talent of Pipe Major Sam Scott. Under sunny skies and with a great audience with many veterans, the Sons played traditional tunes at the North Plaza of the Museum, and all were given a special War Museum pin. Sam Scott s bagpipes were viewed by all, and will remain on display in the lobby until June 21. This was a terrific way to mark the 65th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion, and everyone was very pleased to see members of the Scott family on hand for the show. We are grateful to all who attended as guests and to those who played. Bethany Bisaillion, P/M SoSPB.
3 Passages Doug Craig The Regimental Pipes and Drums of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa lost a key member and cherished friend when Bruce Craig passed away suddenly at the age of 57. As a respected and accomplished member and former RSM of the 30th Field Artillery Regiment's Cadet Corps, Bruce received Duke of Edinburgh's Medal from the Duke himself. After playing as a member of the Kemptville Legion drum corps, he later joined the Camerons as a civilian volunteer and served for over ten years as their bass drummer. He will be remembered by the Camerons for his flawless dedication and commitment to the Pipes and Drums as well as his ability to welcome and mentor new members. The Cameron Highlanders extend their condolences to his many friends and family as they mourn the loss of their friend Bruce Craig. The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear the association's appeal of a lower court ruling that approved the label used by Cape Breton's Glenora Distillers. As usual, the court gave no reasons for its decision. The association, which zealously guards the name scotch as applying only to whisky made in Scotland, argued that use of the name Glen Breton could confuse consumers. It says the prefix "glen" is associated with many single-malt scotches and people might think that Glen Breton was a Scottish product. The Federal Court rejected the argument earlier this year. The association says it's disappointed by the high court's refusal to hear the case. It says it will still oppose the use of the label outside Canada. Glenora Distillers International Ltd., is Canada's only single malt whisky distillery and is based in Glenville, Nova Scotia. The Canadian Press

6 O.P.G Kingston Celtfest Saturday 23 May Results The Rideau Acres Campground was a new venue for the 5 th annual OPG Celtfest, hosted by the Rob Roy Pipe Band and Highland Dancers. The weather again seemed to be on our side, which was appreciated by all participants. Judges for this year s events included Andrew Berthoff, Michael Grey, and Doug Stronach. This year s event included: a Highland Dancing competition featuring over 100 competitors, a full slate of amateur solo piping and drumming events in the morning, with sixteen pipe bands competing in Grade 5 through Grade 2. The Beer Tent seems to be a popular gathering place, with food and many vendors on hand for everyone to enjoy. Admission to the event was free. This resulted in a very large crowd in attendance to support all participants. Thank you to Ontario Power Generation, our many local sponsors and the Ottawa branch of the PPBSO for their support of this event. Thank you also to all in the area who supported this event. Given our distance from other contests, it is important that we all work together to support the great events that are happening in our own region. Hopefully this event (and all others in the Ottawa region) will continue to grow. See you again next year on Saturday 29 May 2010 at Rideau Acres Campground for the sixth annual Celtfest!!
