1 PIPERS and PIPE BAND SOCIETY of ONTARIO, OTTAWA BRANCH **** **** President: Graeme Ogilvie (613) ( Vice-President: John Harper (613) ( Vice-President: Jenny Putinski (613) ( Treasurer: Jack Yourt (613) ( Secretary: Douglas Heyland (613) ( Winchester Indoor Games SATURDAY 12 MAY 2007 (see page 4 for details, entry form on page 9) ***** 2007 Ottawa Branch Open Solo Contest ***** Following a capacity crowd at the afternoon workshop, Bob Worrall joined us the night of Saturday 07 April 2007 at the RCAF Officers Mess downtown Ottawa as the adjudicator for the annual Ottawa Branch Open Solo Contest. For the fourth time in six years the day had the misfortune of starting with snowfall, but the good news is that it was not enough to deter a good number of spectators from the prestigious contest. Not quite could be said for the number of competitors, as the Easter weekend and the Vimy 90 th Anniversary celebrations took priority for a number of the usual competitors, but those who played put on an excellent show. The 2007 contest provided another very worthy champion in Andrew Hayes of the Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band who won the Glengarry Cup for the fourth time. Second place in this year s contest went to Scott McIntosh and third place to Donald Buchanan. After the competition was completed, the guests were treated to a wonderful evening of piping from Bob Worrall as he enthralled the gathered with a very entertaining 45-minute recital. Mixing old with the new, slow/dramatic pieces with the flair for the lively hornpipes and reels, it was another extraordinary performance that fully demonstrated all the talents that led him to his place as one of the world s best pipers. A special thanks goes out again to the MacLeod Society of Ottawa for their sponsorship of the $300 first place prize. The second place of $200 was sponsored by Little Scotland, and the third place prize of $100 was sponsored this year by the Quality Hotel at 290 Rideau Street (who also generously provided Bob Worrall s accommodations for the weekend).

2 Ottawa Branch Open Solo Contest (cont d) This year we were again especially fortunate to have a number of local celtic restaurants provide generous gift certificates for all of the competitors. These sponsors are all identified below. Many thanks to them each of them as it was a very welcome way to show appreciation to all the competitors who provided such a great evening of piping. To our members of the Ottawa Branch, you should be frequenting these establishments to show our sincerest appreciation!!! 2007 Ottawa Branch Open Solo Contest Gift Certificate Sponsors Future Ottawa Branch Dates 28 April An Evening with the Quigley Highlanders 28 April Glengarry Pipe Band Celtic Roots Concert Tour - Brockville 12 May Winchester In-Door Highland Games 26 May OPG Kingston Celtfest (outdoor competition for soloists and band) 16 June Veterans Memorial Highland Game July Kingston School of Scottish Music and Dance August Glengarry Highland Games 05 August Montreal Highland Games 25 August North Lanark (Almonte) Highland Games

3 ***** Bob Worrall Workshop 07 April 2007 ***** On Saturday 07 April 2007, just short of 50 Branch members showed up at the Chimo Hotel in east-end Ottawa to take in a captivating afternoon of instruction from the irrepressible Bob Worrall. Working his way through three subjects, Controlling Stage Fright and Performance Anxiety, Phrase Definition of March, Strathspey and Reels, and Practice Strategies, Bob tackled each with an enthusiasm that had everyone glued to his every word. Making wonderful use of many personal anecdotes to illustrate his points, it was an exceptional learning experience for every one in attendance. The four and half hours of instruction absolutely flew by. Now it s just a matter of putting all those lessons into practice!!! Ottawa Branch Drumming School with Rob MacLeod The Ottawa Branch Drumming School, instructed by Rob MacLeod of the Glengarry Pipe Band, was a huge success right out of the gate. 6 The Great War On April 8 th and 9 th, CBC aired The Great War. The movie depicted Canada's role in the major battles during the war, from the St Julien gas attack, the devastation of Newfoundlanders at Beaumont Hamel, Passchendaele, Vimy, to the last 100 days. The 150 actors who took part in the film were all descendants of Vimy battle veterans, and for three weeks in July 2006 lived the World War I experience at an encampment south of Montreal. Two of our local Ottawa Branch members, Brad Hampson and George Muggleton, were privileged to have been a part of this project. Brad Hampson (who represented his granddad), and a member of the Ottawa Police Service and the RCMP (NCR) Pipe Bands, provides the following glimpse of what that experience was like. He played the role of a Section Commander and Piper in this War Epic.. For me, with my grandfather's involvement in the 10th Battalion's attack on Vimy, everything about our shoot that was related to this battle gave me goose bumps. They started when I was given communion by Cannon Scott in full battle order deep in a tunnel shaft with his altar made on a pile of stretchers. The day we shot the attack on Vimy Ridge was the only day it rained. How appropriate that in that blistering summer's heat, as if sent from our ancestors above, the clouds rolled in, creating a dark grey sky, and the pelting rains turned the already muddy trenches to a thick sludge all across the battlefield. All that was missing was the smell of death and the rats. This was the big day and although we all were deathly tired, soaked through our putties, with caked on mud adding pounds to our heavy boots, the excitement we all felt must have mirrored some of the thoughts of our proud ancestors on that Easter April morning in We had marched to the front as a Battalion, singing the old favourites from the war like Tipperary, Pack Up Your Troubles, and Mademoiselle from Armentieres. By now, the boys had become soldiers, not civilians, and believe me they looked the part. In fours, all in step, blisters and all, the sound of soles crushing the ground in cadence as one. We came into the reserve trenches and were huddled like a mass of stinking humanity inside a makeshift tunnel, just back of the jumping off trenches. I had turned my section commander's whistle over to my Lance Corporal and was preparing my bagpipes. The honour was mine to play our lads over the top and through "No Man's Land" to the ridge. Everything was set and I was one of the first wave up and over the parapet when the whistle blew. I'll never forget the sense of trepidation, wanting to play well for our gang, so they would have a great memory of this day which they'd never forget. Through the driving snow, with the battlefield smoke drifting across the eerie landscape, the shrill whistles came, followed quickly by the yells and cheers of our lads as we raced over the top. I crawled over the parapet, quickly, with my pipes, caked in mud, and blew them up. They came alive as if cheering on the boys, to the invigorating tunes of Bonnie Dundee and Scotland the Brave. There is indeed something about the sound of the pipes in battle. The German soldiers during the war had given pipers an appropriate nickname... "Ladies from Hell". Striding slowly through the wire, and shell torn ground, I fell once, my bare knees under my kilt digging into the clammy mud beside a dead German soldier, whose insides had been torn out. With mud caked on my fingers, the brave tunes sounded again, now amid the staccato machine gun fire raking the waves of advancing Canadians. It was almost surreal... like I was in my own little world. I wondered if this was how the pipers of the past had felt marching and playing into battle. There was a sense of invincibility about it, and it seemed our troops charged that much faster. At the same time it must have been deathly terrifying. Men and boys were falling and dying in the

7 mud all around me until we made it up onto the ridge in front of the German trenches. The fighting ceased, and we all stood and cheered, looking back over the pock-marked battlefield we just crossed. Nothing seemed more appropriate in that moment, and I started playing the Maple Leaf Forever, the boys singing along. You can't imagine what that sounded like. I was so proud of all of us and of our ancestors. I didn't want it to end. There we all were... sopping wet, heavy with caked mud on our woolen uniforms, dirty faces, some bleeding real blood, stinking to beat the band, and the tightest knit bunch of volunteer two week soldiers I'd ever known. Amongst us were policemen, artists, IT engineers, photographers, businessmen, physiotherapists, medics, musicians, students, kids, grandfathers, career and part time soldiers, from all across this great country. Maybe we were more like the real CEF of our ancestors than we realized. My favourite memory of the whole three weeks was how my twelve man section, men ranging in age from 18 to 43, arrived from points all across the country, from all different walks of life, and most with no military training, set foot in camp and made a go of it the best they could. The food was bad, the ground was hard, the route marches in the wool uniforms in the hot sun made for several pounds lost daily, and the mud was deep. They all told stories of their ancestors, all with their own twists and turns, not to mention the unbelievable heroic feats achieved. Every one of those men of the Black Watch became the cream of the crop, and some of the best volunteer soldiers I've ever had the privilege to lead. They arrived as a rabble, and left as a highly disciplined, and fine fighting unit, just as their forefathers did. It made me proud to think that maybe the only difference between our grandfathers and us, was the clock on the century. There are so many more personal stories I have of this great adventure, of comradeship, being pushed to the limit as a 1st World War Canadian soldier. But the essence of my experience was captured in a nutshell on the day we took Vimy Ridge for the second time. I think it was Brian McKenna who told us that day he'd never seen anything like it. We were all born again Canadians that day and this I will never forget. Tartan Day 2007 NATIONAL TARTAN DAY CELEBRATIONS This year s Tartan Day took place Friday, 06 April 2007 at 12 Noon at Parliament Hill, Ottawa. Many tartan-clad enthusiasts bundled up in the frigid temperatures to join the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band celebrating Ottawa s first 'Gathering of the Clans'.
