It was with some trepidation that the Branch executive decided to hold the first meeting on the 6th of October, the Thanksgiving weekend, but those concerns were nothing compared to the surprise at having to go to a second sign-in sheet for our first knock-out contest of the season. Thirty-three (33!!) pipers and five drummers signed up for a total of 38 competitors. Our thanks to Dave Yeo who helped out with the judging of the drummers and a huge thank you to Amy Garson who stoically managed to make her way through all thirty-three pipers in one short evening. A special thank you also goes out to our stalwart Archie Morrison who helped out by stewarding for this huge motley crew. Congratulations to Krissy McLeod on winning the opening event. She was awarded a copy of Allan MacKenzie's new book, "Co-chruinneachadh MhicChoinnich, Pipe Music from Cape Breton and Away", generously donated by Keith Williamson of the Air Command Pipes and Drums. And as a reminder... all competitors are expected to compete in proper highland dress. Next Meeting Date Saturday 03 November Time 8:00 pm. Place the Walkey Road Armouries, 2100 Walkley Road, between St. Laurent Blvd and Conroy Ave (the Armouries are on the south side of Walkley Ave, right beside the Walkley Bowling Centre parking lot). *** NOTE: do not park in the reserved parking spots, the Armouries are a 24/7 facility ***. At the 03 November meeting, "B" Division pipers will be playing four parts of a 2/4 March (one or two tunes), and drummers will be playing four parts of a 2/4 March (one or two tunes). The piping judge and recitalist will be John Wright of Manotick. The drumming judge was still tbd at the time of this newsletter.

And a big special thank you to Brian Williamson for his dedication to the Ottawa Branch and all the time he has volunteered over the past twenty years. Brian has had a tremendous influence over all our activities during the period, as a committee member, piper and judge. We wish you well with all this new spare time you will now have!! One set of silver/ivory Hardie Bagpipes (1988) in a Navy Blue 'British Shop' Carrying Case; green velvet bag cover with gold trim; 1 silver soled Naill Chanter tied to a James Begg Sheepskin Bag. The case also included one glengarry with the Stag's Head Cap Badge (78 th Highlanders) in addition to a plastic band chanter with chanter protector (including one Hardie practice chanter). Topics to be covered: how to maintain your pipes, how to work with reeds, how to choose the right reeds for competition, how to run an effective band practice. Following the round table discussions, it will be on to the bagpipes at 11:00, with everyone having an opportunity to see Jake individually. A final wrap-up will be held once everything is done. Cost and location are to be finalized, but those interested can rsvp to Bob Derry at or by to robert_derry@ocdsb.edu.on.ca. Kingston Pipefest 2002 The Pipefest 2002 will be held Saturday 09 February 2002 in Kingston, Ontario. The piping judge will be Bob Worrall. Further details tbd. Mark it on your calendar!! CANADIAN MASSED PIPES & DRUMS - NEW YORK CITY A parade of 10,000 pipers and drummers is scheduled for New York City on 06 April 2002, (Tartan Day, U.S.A.), in association with 'Marie Curie Cancer Care'. For more information, and to register, go to: < CANADIAN MASSED PIPES & DRUMS - CANADA/CHINA FRIENDSHIP TOUR Departure date is planned for April 13th, The proposed venues in mainland China are Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou and Shanghai. Maybe Hong Kong. There will be planned sightseeing tours to, what we hope are what people would want to see while in China, including: The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Mao Tsetung Memorial, Tian An Men Square, Leshan Stone Buddha, Dacheng Hall of Confucius Mausoleum, the Great Wall of China, the Terra Cotta Warrior Site, tour of West Lake, the Oriental Pearl TV & Radio Tower, Yangpu Bridge etc. Accommodation will be 4 and 5 star hotels comparable to anything in Canada. *NOTE* None of this is carved in stone. 5 NEW PIPE BANDS IN THE OTTAWA BRANCH AREA The Glengarry Pipe Band... Bringing back to Ottawa after a long absence, the local grade II competition band! There are many exceptionally talented pipers and drummers in the Ottawa Valley, and recent efforts to inspire as many as possible to join us have resulted in the reformation of the grade II Glengarry Pipe Band. Many players from the old grade II band of 6 years ago have returned, and there is some great new talent in the Glengarry area ready for the challenge... with room yet for more! If you're grade II or higher and interested in playing with us, we'd like to hear from you! We're looking forward to an exciting new year, including the World Pipe Band Championships and the Cowal Highland Gathering... Plan to make us a part of your summer by taking in our new band at the games this year and giving us your support! For information call Colin at Juvenile Pipe Band in Manotick A new juvenile pipe band is being formed in Manotick, Ontario. This band will be for juveniles in the 8 to 25 year old bracket with a penchant for excellence and creativity in bagpiping/drumming and having fun together. This band will be on a three year building spree starting 04 September The band will be spearheaded by Pipe Major John Wright of Manotick who has the enthusiasm and experience to head such a venture. His pipe band from Thunder Bay was the first ever pipe band in the Rose Bowl parade and that same band of kids won 6 th place in Grade 4 at the Intercontinental Highland Games in Toronto. City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band The Rob Roy Pipe Band was pleased in the fall of 2000 to announce the establishment of a new Juvenile Pipe Band. The band consists of pipers and drummers under the age of 18 and is known as the City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band. The band is under the direction of Pipe Major Jarrod Purvis and Drum Sergeant Scott Nicholson. They are assisted by Scott Bell and Chris Bell. Jarrod, Scott (Bell) and Chris are leaders of the Rob Roy Pipe Band which competes at a Grade II level. Scott Nicholson is presently a member of the 78th. Fraser Highlanders (Toronto) and is responsible for Rob Roy's instructional program. Practices are held in Kingston on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The band participates in parades, shows, and competitions at the Grade V level. Last year the band participated in their first competition in Winchester and were very pleased to finish first in Grade V. The band will encourage young students to further develop their talents with other players their own age. In addition, players may have the future opportunity of competing with Rob Roy's Grade II band. Anyone who is interested in joining either the City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band, or the Rob Roy Pipe Band, should contact Scott Bell at or him at swb1@post.queensu.ca. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipes & Drums (National Capital Region). Formed in the Spring of 2000, the Band now numbers 25 players. Wearing the newly-minted RCMP Tartan and the renowned red serge tunic, the Band is comprised of regular members of the RCMP, employees and citizen volunteers. Be a part of this unique community policing initiative. The Band would like to hear from you if: you consider yourself a solid player; piper or drummer, you are available for practice on Wednesday evenings, and you can offer first allegiance to the RCMP Band.
