The evening began with the drumming events, judged by Steve Lanning. In the B division Jig, Shahna Summers of the Sons of Scotland took first place, with Beth Bisaillon accompanying on the pipes with the Glasgow City Police Pipers. In the A division drumming, the sole competitor was Devin Roberts of the Ottawa Police Services Pipes and Drums, with Chris Dodson accompanying with the classic 6/8 marches John MacColl s Farewell to the Scottish Horse and Donald MacLean of Lewis. The piping event was judged by Sean McKeown of the Toronto Police Pipe Band. It was the second annual Canadian content event with competitors playing medleys consisting of tunes written by Canadian composers, showcasing the diversity and quality of Canadian tune-writing. 2 Walter McLeish, with Valerie Cooke Johnson a close second and John Steele rounding out the top three. Following the contest, Sean McKeown entertained a packed, rowdy room that was augmented by several Winterlude enthisiasts who heard the event from the street and made a detour on their way home from skating on the nearby Rideau Canal. After a series of competition sets, feverish crowd-pleasers and an impromptu chant for one more set everyone went home happy from one of the most exciting evenings in recent memory. The website provides the executive a means to easily post news and announcements as well as allow users to sign up for events online. The vote will be held during a pause at the Knockout event. All positions are up for re-election, and all but one incumbent is seeking re-election. For further information, please contact any current member of the Executive: the-branch-executive/ Knockout Finalists Finalists for Branch Knockout Series The lineup is now set for the finals in all divisions of the Branch knockout series. Finalists were determined based on the number of points accumulated in qualifying Branch knockout events through the Fall and Winter. The finals will be held on February 23 at the Naval Officers Mess, 78 Lisgar Street. Piping events will be judged by Ryan Canning and drumming events by Andrew Lawson, both of House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band. Tune selection for all events is own choice medley. 10 Victoria Bell 9 Workshop with Ryan Canning and Andrew Lawson Join us on February 23 for piping and drumming group workshops with Ryan Canning and Andrew Lawson of the House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead pipe band. Ryan Canning was recently appointed as the Pipe Major of Shotts and brings with him truly world class experience as a player and composer. Originally from Northern Ireland, Ryan spent 16 years with the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band where he won 40 RSPBA major championships, including 6 World Championship titles, a Grand Slam, and 9 RSPBA Champion of Champions awards. Ryan s book of music The Full Monty published in 2004 contains tunes played by some of the world s top pipe bands. Ryan is also the owner of Canning Reedmakers, and teaches at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow. Since 2004 Andrew Lawson has been a member of the world class Shotts Drum Corps under Jim Kilpatrick MBE, having played previously with Toronto Police and Peel Regional Police. With Shotts he has won numerous band and drumming titles including the 2005 World Championship (overall and drumming), the 2011 World Champion Drum Corps, and 5 Champion of Champions drumming prizes. He has consistently placed in the top of many solo contests, including fourth in the World Solo Drumming Championships in Andrew originally hails from Ontario and we look forward to welcoming him home. The workshops will cover rudiments, technique and execution as well as setup and tuning. Morning sessions will be open to beginner and intermediate players, with afternoon sessions for advanced players. Participants should bring instruments as well as practice chanters/pads. All workshops will take place at the Naval Officers Mess, 78 Lisgar Street. The fee for all participants is $25 per half day. Register online at (HERE) or at the door. Registration will begin 30 minutes early to permit workshops to commence promptly on time. The morning will be devoted to beginner/intermediate piobaireachd rudiments, and a selection of appropriate piobaireachd. The afternoon session will be for senior amateur/pro concentrating on expression of selected silver medal piobaireachd. 12 Bob Worrall Bob Worrall is one of North America s leading teachers, adjudicators and performers. Bob is a respected composer, having published two collections of bagpipe music. He is featured on three solo piping recordings and is a member of the folk group Scantily Plaid. After a piping career with a number of Ontario s leading pipe bands, including the City of Toronto Pipe Band and the General Motors Pipe Band, Bob retired from competitive piping in His solo accomplishments were extensive, both in North America and Scotland. He won the North American Professional Championship an unprecedented 7 times and the Ontario Professional Championship Supreme title for 12 of his 13 years in the professional class. He was also the 1977 winner of the March and Strathspey/Reel events in Inverness. He was a pupil of Bill Millar, Willie Connell and the late John Wilson. A member of North American and the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association s judging panels, Bob has been Branch Newsletter&qs=true&search=query&msg=13cc6e488a5856d5 12/14
13 selected to judge the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow on eleven occasions. For the last seven years he has been the colour commentator for the BBC s broadcast of the World Pipe Band Championships. He is a member of the Piobaireachd Society s Senior Judges list and has adjudicated major competitions throughout the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Brittany and South Africa. Bob's recent overseas piping ventures have included teaching and performing engagements in Zimbabwe and Italy. Bob was the senior instructor at the Gaelic College in Cape Breton for 15 years. More recent piping camps have included Kingston (Ontario), the Ohio Scottish Arts School, Lake Diefenbaker (Saskatchewan), Washington State and Oregon, Vancouver Island, Uruguay, Australia and South Africa. Weekend workshops and recitals provide him with a schedule that has taken him to virtually all of the Canadian provinces and 36 U.S. States. Seeking Experienced Bass Drummer Glengarry Grade 4 Pipe Band is looking for an experienced bass drummer. The Grade 4 band will be competing at most Ontario circuit competition games and World Championships in Scotland.
