1 EVENT DESCRIPTION The Military and Civilian Spouses Club (MCSC) of Fort Irwin s Chili Cook-Off is a community event that s fun for everyone! Teams made up of units and organizations from Fort Irwin will submit a chili recipe, which will be sampled by guests and pre-selected judges who attend the event. This is your chance to battle it out with teams across Fort Irwin for ALL of the bragging rights! IMPORTANT EVENT DETAILS DATE: Saturday, September 26 LOCATION: Shock Wave EVENT TIME: SET-UP/CHECK-IN TIME: (Set-up MUST be complete by 1600) PRESENTATION OF WINNERS: 2030 CLEAN-UP/BREAKDOWN TIME: ENTRY FEE: $25 per team ENTRY DEADLINE: Monday, September 14 PRIZE CATEGORIES: Best Decorated Booth People s Choice (Chili) Judge s Choice (Chili) - 1 -

2 ENTRY GUIDELINES 1. MCSC will provide the following for each team: tasting bowls, spoons, and napkins. 2. Teams are required to provide the following: a. Chili: One recipe per team. Your team will need 6 gallons of warm and ready to serve chili. A standard crock-pot will hold 5-6 quarts, so plan on bringing a total of 5 crock-pots full of premade chili. b. Condiments: If your team plans on including condiments in your chili recipe (cheese, sour cream, etc.), you are responsible for providing these items. c. Ladles and/or serving utensils d. Instant-read (digital) thermometer e. Hand sanitizer or non-latex gloves for ALL team members serving chili f. Table, chairs, tent/covering for your booth g. Trash can for use at your chili booth h. Table decorations/theme (if you wish to compete for Best Decorated Booth) i. Power strip and extension cord 3. Food Handler s Card requirement: Each team must designate a team captain who will be involved in preparing and handling the chili. The team captain MUST obtain a Food Handler s Card from Preventive Medicine (as per TB MED 530 Triservice Food Code). MCSC will have representatives present for the entire duration of the event to dispense your team s chili to guests, so that the team captain will not need to do so. A copy of the Food Handler s Card MUST be presented to MCSC upon check-on on the day of the event. The Food Handler's Card can be obtained through the Preventive Medicine office, which is located in Bldg. 172 (corner of 4th and Inner Loop). The Food Handler s Card is free of charge. You can prepare for the test via the web at Then, you must stop by Preventive Medicine office to take the test. Their hours of operation are and M, T, W, F and Thursdays from (closed for training in the afternoon). If you prefer, you can study the materials at Preventive Medicine rather than via the web

Outdoor Elements The event will be held outdoors, so please be prepared for the Mojave Desert winds and elements when planning your table presentation and decorations. 5. Event Tickets Everyone who will be attending the event will need to purchase an entry ticket. Tickets can be purchased in advance ($6 each or two for $10) or on the day of the event ($8 each or two for $15). With the purchase of a ticket, guests will receive one sample of each team s chili. Punch cards with each team s unit or organization logo will be used to regulate samples. Once a guest is served a sample of chili, the individual dispensing the chili will cross off your team s logo on each guest s card (we will not be using an actual hole punch). 6. Prizes a. A top prize will be awarded in each of the following categories: i. Best Decorated Booth 1. Teams are encouraged to decorate tables and booth area. 2. The booth may have a chili related theme or other creative theme appropriate for the event. 3. We also encourage team members to dress up in costumes as part of the booth theme. 4. A panel of secret judges will determine the winner. ii. People s Choice 1. Guests will vote on their favorite chili by dropping their voting card at your booth. The team who receives the most voting cards will be declared the winner. iii. Judge s Choice 1. A panel of pre-selected VIP judges will declare a winning chili recipe

4 ENTRY GUIDELINES (continued) 7. Clean-Up and Break Down Your team will responsible for disposing of all waste in your designated booth area. Any team that fails to clean-up and remove all personal items and waste will be fined. Teams must checkout with an MCSC representative before leaving the event. 8. Thank You and Good Luck!
