1 Join us Saturday, November 3 for a Day of Fun & Games! FOOD & GAMES Fun for all - bring your family & friends! CARNIVAL HIGHLIGHTS Popcorn, Nachos, Hot Dogs, Snow Cones, Face Painting, Balloon Animals, Fortune Teller,, Ring Toss, Kerplunk, Firehawk Golf, Jenga and more! COOK OFFS Cooking Warriors your time has come! Feel free to enter the cook-off, the bake-off or both! See attached info sheet and entry form for specifics. CROCKPOT COOK-OFF* Bring your most desirable Crockpot recipe to share with the Young World of course it can mean chili, but it can also mean soup or stew, or perhaps macaroni & cheese. And it most definitely could mean a steaming platter of Lobster. We ll leave that defining stuff up to you just bring your most divine dish! DESSERT BAKE-OFF* Do your Lemon Bars spark family feuds? Is your Cherry Pie to die for? Does your Mousse attract Moose? Do you like bad puns? If so, you belong in the Dessert Bake-off! * PLEASE PRE-REGISTER BY October 29th CHUNK OFFS Ready to join forces with your classmates to design & build a siege engine? The competition will be fierce, but the team that combines distance and accuracy to get the most pumpkins in the target area will take home the win. We do have a limited chunkin area, so there will be a maximum distance allowable. This year, there are two divisions: Stock Chunkin & Open Chunkin. Teams must have at least one adult, and children under 10 must have parental supervision at all times for safety purposes. All teams may begin onsite construction starting at 10 AM, and will have three test throws prior to competition (2-ish). So form your teams now & get ready to squash some squash! STOCK CHUNK-OFF* Build on-site using only materials in the Build Kit to pummel targets about 30 feet away. Pull out the power tools and join forces to compete in the Stock Chunk. Build kits with materials (see list) will be provided the day of the event only materials from the kit may be used to build your chunker. But there are still a zillion different ways to build a chunkin machine, so form your team early and get started on your R&D! OPEN CHUNK-OFF* Build at home or onsite with your own stuff to blast targets about 40 feet away. Teams in the Open Chunk can use any materials they can scrape together to build the chunker of their dreams with a couple of exceptions: 1) No combustion fire, explosions, chemical reactions, etc. 2) No pressure tanks. QUESTIONS ANYONE? So, you ask Why all this pre-registering rigmarole? This isn t our first rodeo well Pumpkin Chunk. Nope, it s our sixth. So being the seasoned pros we are, we realized it might be easier on a whole lot of folks if we knew how much of everything we needed. So by pre-registering, our dedicated YOUNGFEST team (which, by the way, is made up of parents mainly who, as you know, don t have a lot of spare time/change to begin with) will know how much stuff they need to get so that everyone can enjoy the fun! OK, you say, that sounds reasonable But how much is it going to cost me a gazillion dollars? Here s the good part we re not trying to fundraise here, just trying to cover the cost of the deal. If there happens to be any moolah lying around after bills are paid, it will go to the Flares (the EAYA PTO) and be used to help support scholar activities. Access the whole shebang for a mere 10 bucks! This will include Carnival Food, Hot Dogs, Drinks, samples of the Crockpot & Desserts Cook-offs.
2 Schedule of Events VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rachel Hernandez or Veronica Gunter for volunteer opportunities! Volunteer, invite a friend and show up! Volunteer shifts will be short so all can enjoy the fun, so please consider volunteering to help make our Fall Youngfest a success! An excellent opportunity for scholars to earn Purple Cord hours! NOTE: Schedule is less like Subject to Change as it is Absolutely, Positively, Without a Doubt Going to Change PRE-EVENT STUFF 9:00 AM SET UP 10:00 CONSTRUCTION ZONE OPENS Teams may begin construction at any time starting at 10 AM. All teams must have an adult, and children under 10 must have parental supervision for safety! 11:00 VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN Booths and games ready to go by 11:30! 11:30 COOK OFF BOOTHS OPEN Cook Off Contestants may set up their space and prepare their samples. 5 CHUNKIN INFO RULES AND SPECS (page 1 of 2) PUMPKIN UP! Are you ready to take the challenge? Ready to design and build a siege engine capable of hurling pumpkins at a target? The competition is sure to be strong but the team with the most pumpkins in the target area takes the win. To compete, start forming your team and begin to research and design siege engine. The list of general build items and safety items that you will be provided at the build site is attached. Show up at the any time after 10 am ready to build your siege engine. Starting at 3:00 pm-ish, teams will be given 3 test shots each team taking a shot, a brief period for adjustment, then repeat x2. Remember, the objective is accuracy and distance (but not too far- remember we have limited space). DA RULES FOR ALL YOU CHUNKERS You must follow the directions of the contest director and appointed safety observers. There will be a max limit defined for the travel of any pumpkin shot. Any shot that travels past this point prior to the initial impact after the three practice shots will result in disqualification. We don t want to knock out our neighbors! The contest will progress for a specified number of rounds (depending on number of entries). If there is a tie after the standard rounds, the tied contestants will continue with additional rounds until a winner is determined or we all get tired and go home. FOR YOU STOCK DIVISION FOLKS You may only use the materials included in the build kit with the following exceptions: o Counter Weight If you choose to build a trebuchet, you can use a substance found at the school as a counter weight. The substance must fit entirely within the 5 Gallon Bucket from the build kit. The substance must be returned to where it was found / disposed of at the end of the competition. You do not have to use all of the common build items. You must include / use the required safety items in your build in the prescribed way. FOR YOU MORE OPEN DIVISION FOLKS Your siege engine may be built at home and completed onsite. Pretty much any materials and method of propulsion may be used except pressurized canisters and explosives/fire/chemical reactions/tasmanian Barking Spiders/etc. KEEP IT SAFE! RECOMMENDED TOOLS Teams are responsible for securing their own tools. At a minimum you should bring: A Cordless Drill/Screwdriver (with Drill Bits & Phillips Screwdriver Bits), Hammer, Screw Drivers, Extension Cord, and any others at your discretion. For safety, no saws or knives may be BROUGHT to the build. These will be available on site. If the contest director or safety observers observe unsafe use of any tool, including the tools you brought, they can instruct the safe use of the tool or ban the team s use of that tool from that point forward. The Goal is to keep your Team safe, not to inhibit your build.
