1 As an IB Candidate School Students from Leaders for the 21st Century worked diligently to plan our second annual Unity Day. UNITY day is in celebration of National Bullying Prevention month. Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange to show their support of the Make It Orange, Make It End campaign. Stickers with slogans were available so everyone had the chance to show their support. At lunch students were invited to get their picture taken and sign our UNITY day banner as well as participate in Project Connect by writing what they will do to create a safer school on a paper link and adding it to our chain. The photos were then turned into a video. It was a remarkable day highlighting the group effort it will take to end bullying. Another student group Calling All Colors is hard at work planning our next event for 6th grade students- Mix It Up At Lunch Day. The goal of Mix It Up At Lunch Day (which is put on nation wide) is to get middle schoolers in particular to branch away from their cliques and get to know someone new. The cafeteria can be one of the most brutal places for a new student or a student without a lot of friends. By helping students break down those walls we are working on creating a positive climate at Harbor Lights for all students. Volume 9 Issue 03 October 18, Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2:00am. Please remember to turn your clocks back one hour. Just a friendly reminder about dropping off and picking up your student. If you drop off your child in the morning, please do not drop off in the south parking lot. We have buses dropping students off. When dropping off your child, please drop off at the front doors (on 136th Avenue), pull up behind the next vehicle and have your child exit on the curb side ONLY. Both sets of main doors are open at 7:00 a.m. and students may enter either door. You can help minimize traffic back-ups on 136th Avenue by having your child exit the vehicle once it comes to a stop. If you are talking, eating breakfast, signing papers, please pull into a parking spot; please DO NOT block traffic. If you are waiting for your student after school, please park curb side only. The second lane is for those who have already picked up their student and are ready to pull out. TONIGHT at 6:00 p.m., Athletic Boosters and Holland Tire Center will be hosting a pig roast for our last home football game of the season. Pig, chips and pop will be on sale starting at 6:00. Don t miss out!!

Please gather any used markers (any brand, not just Crayola) you may have around the house and drop them off either in the library or in a classroom with a collection area. These markers are then sent to Crayola, where they are recycled into a clean-burning fuel. 308 markers equals one gallon of fuel! If you d like more information about this program, you can visit Crayola s website at We are looking for volunteer's to do some light, clerical work in the office at Harbor Lights. 7 PARENTS TO LEARN ABOUT DIGITAL SAFETY FOR THEIR CHILDREN Education and law enforcement representatives team up to help parents understand risks of using social media and online apps. A free Digital Safety Parent workshop designed to help parents learn how to keep their children safe online will be offered by Ottawa Area Intermediate School District on Thursday, October 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Educational Services Building, located at Port Sheldon Street in Holland. Participants will review websites commonly used by kids and provide information on cyber bullying among other topics. We are hosting this workshop to help parents be more aware of what their children are doing online with apps and through social media, said Anne Thorp, PhD, OAISD Instructional Technologist and REMC 7 Director. With recent events in the media as a result of cyber bullying in particular, all parents of children who spend time online will find this session informative and enlightening. Other presenters include Stacey Sills, Health and Prevention Consultant for OAISD, and Martin Miller, Community Service Trooper for counties of Ottawa, Kent and Muskegon, stationed at the Michigan State Police Rockford post. What is posted online never truly goes away, Sills said. This session will bring parents up to speed with the newest and most popular sites so they can be more aware of what their children might be doing online. Parents will leave the workshop with tools and resources to help communicate with their children about the risks they may face in the online world and social media. "Cyber activity which seriously affects victims and has serious consequences for the suspects is on the rise, Trooper Martin said. I am looking forward to helping parents, and therefore their children, understand the consequences of their actions online. The Ottawa Area ISD works collaboratively with schools and communities to meet the educational needs of students in the Ottawa area. By pooling resources and providing services regionally, the OAISD provides important programs and services to local K-12 school districts and all charter, parochial and private schools in the most cost-effective ways possible. For more information, contact Anne Thorp at x4062 or athorp@oaisd.org.
